Parental Solution to new computers Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:04 AM PST Parental Solutions for New Computers (PiHole, NXFilter, FreshTomato, etc.) Howdy all, So just this Christmas, I bought my kids a couple of laptops (girl is 12 boy is 8) and I want to implement some control over what they will be viewing. I'm mostly concerned about porn, as I already regulate their internet usage time using my router (Netgear R7000 flashed with FreshTomato) by setting up time of day restrictions. I currently have a Raspberry Pi setup with PiHole as my whole home DNS server. I am liking PiHole and kind of want to stick with it. So I started looking at a solution to regulate my kids computer usage and to filter their surfing experience. I started looking at NXfFilter, which looks promising but apparently would be difficult to run alongside NXFilter on the Pi. I'd consider switching to NXFilter, but their limit of 20 devices makes me not want to use it as a whole home solution as PiHole currently filters for over 85 devices in my home. I do have a standalone Windows 10 laptop I have which I use almost solely as a Plex Media Server, which I could install NXFilter on and direct only the two laptops to. However, this could be easily circumvented in a couple years once the girl gets more tech savvy. Something I like about NXFilter is I could put a custom block page on it where my kids will know for sure that I'm watching. I've found that I could use PiHole in a similar manner as NXFilter by creating a user group for my kids devices and adding stricter porn filters to that group. I can only assume that this would be as effective as the NXFilter. Plus, I notice that PiHole uses MAC address instead of static IP addresses like NXFilter, which although also easily manipulated is something I can hide from my daughter for a few years. I'd just like some your professional opinions and suggestions. I didn't know if anyone would have a creative and effective solution for me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:46 PM PST Looking for some advice for running a fibre cable around the outside walls of my house. Can't really find any outdoor rated multimode cabling so am looking into using conduit. Don't really have much experience in the area so any suggestions or tips will be useful [link] [comments] |
Builder left 7 female Ethernet ends in basement Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:19 AM PST Hello Home networking. I am new to home ownership and new to home networking (apologies if I miss providing information, I am brand new to it all). Our builder left 7 female end ethernet cables in our basement, 4 seem to be Cat5 and 3 Cat6 (based on the labelling on the end). My understanding is that these lines lead to the different Ethernet connection around the house. My question, can I switch these female ends to male ends and connect them to a splitter? or should I get male to male and use that to connect the lines to a splitter? Moving so I need to figure all this out again Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:39 PM PST Hey y'all, I'm moving to Seattle and where I will be sharing my internet service with two other people all working from home. We are thinking of doing Wave 940mbps over their 100mbps for an extra $20 a month, and we aren't sure if we should do their Enhanced WiFi Eero for $9.95/mo, their router for $14/mo or get our own router. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:17 PM PST Hi there, we are tired of unreliable Wi-Fi so we recently wired our old house for LAN. Wow! Old is definitely new again. [link] [comments] |
Recommend me a budget wireless access point please! Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:05 PM PST Hello. I came over to my parents house for Christmas/new years holiday, and I found out that our Linksys ea6500v1 router/wireless AP bricked itself and they were using the ISP provided modem/router/AP for wifi. My brother, who still lives with my parents said he gets random ping spikes over 2k ms, which causes games to be unplayable. We have no wired devices and I noticed when I pinged the modem, it's ping randomly spiked to 1k+milliseconds of ping and had some random drops. I was thinking of getting a ubiquity UAP-ac-lite kit for $100cad, as I heard good things about them, but we have no ethernet built in to our house and coax cables are used for the ISP's modem. And my parents are thinking of moving in about 2 to 3 years and they don't want to mount anything on the wall/ceiling that will have to be removed later. Any recommendations on wifi AP's that has good range? The 2nd floor bedrooms are above the garage (concrete) so the receptions are crap. I am now looking at archer c80, a10 or D-Link DIR-x1560. Thanks, and happy holidays and happy new year. :) [link] [comments] |
I have 500mbps fiber optic, why is my wifi capped at 144mbps? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:34 PM PST We just had fiber optic installed with a 500mbps up/500down plan. Using the ASUS Dark Knight RT-N66U router, I can not get a speed test result more than about 100-110mbps via wifi. Windows network control panel settings show network speed as 144mbps. Smartphone wifi settings also showing network speed is 144mbps. All drivers are up to date. If I use a wired connection from router to laptop, I'm getting about 200mbps. If I use the same cable direct from the fiber optic modem to my laptop, I consistently get the expected 500mbps. Ive turned off all the traffic management in the router settings, and also turned off traffic management in windows. I've tried every combo of 2.4 vs 5ghz, 20Mhz, 40Mhz, Auto 20/40, tried multiple channels that do not have other nearby routers interfering, but still no luck. I know the router is old, but I believe I should be able to achieve about 300mbps wifi and the full 500 when wired as all the ports are gigabit ports. What else am I missing here? [link] [comments] |
all ports open in bridge mode? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:37 PM PST Hey all. I'm trying to open ports in my modem and router without success. Fiber internet cable (from outside the house) connects to modem and modem connects to wifi router via ethernet cable to routers wan port. My PC connects to router via cable, not wifi. At first i was trying to open doors on router but they never showed as open when i test on https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ or with portforward.com port checker software. Then as test, i decided to connect my PC directly to modem, as supposedly the modem is working in bridge mode (even tho the modem config page has section for port forwarding, but i assume that is only needed if i set the modem to ppp mode). So connecting PC to modem directly, in bridge mode, i use windows dialer with email/password provided by ISP to connect to internet (when PC is connected to router i dont need to do that, since router is always connected), but when i test if port is open in any of those port checkers i mentioned above, they still show up as closed. Shouldnt they be open since im connected directly to a modem in bridge mode? I even tried messing with the modem port forwardind options without luck. So eighter im doing something wrong, or could it just mean the setup my ISP uses just won't allow me to open ports on my end? I can also provide videos of all config options i have in my modem and router if anyone wanna help with that. Any insights appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Second router access point — DHCP server enabled, causes Internet slowdown Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:18 PM PST Long story short, I bought a cheap second router and use it in access point mode exclusively to connect my Oculus Quest 2 wireless VR headset to, on the 5 GHz band, for better latency when playing, since I do not have Ethernet—only Wi-Fi—in my apartment. However, when my router is on, the Internet on my PC is extremely slow (my PC uses the 5 GHz network, but it uses an external USB Wi-Fi adapter, not the router itself, as the router is just for providing a stable connection with good latency to my Quest 2, without even having an Internet connection). My Internet speed is still the same (about 60 Mbps download speed), but websites, images, etc. still take much longer to load than they normally do. And this is the case constantly as long as my router is on, not just when I'm using the network when I'm playing VR. I googled it and found out that this might be because it uses a DHCP server. I looked in the router settings, and it is enabled. Can I safely disable this? I did try to, but that caused problems with my PC saying the secondary router AP is an "Unidentified network" and it stopped working. I'm not sure if there's a way to disable DHCP without that happening. Basically, my questions are as follows:
Any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:15 PM PST Here's my question first, and then I'll explain what I'm trying to do: can I use a "cat5/cat5e" RJ45 connector with Cat 6 cable? My situation: The Verizon Fios guy ran a Cat 6 cable from the Fios box directly into a wall jack in my house. I want to run the cable directly into the Fios Gateway instead, and from there to a Ubiquiti switch. So I have to take the cable out of the wall plate, then re-cap it. I saw this on amazon which seems like an inexpensive little kit that has everything I need. https://www.amazon.com/Solsop-Crimping-Crimper-Connectors-Stripper/dp/B083Q16SB6 But the description says it has "Cat5/Cat 5e connectors". Will they still work on my "cat 6" cable? I feel like they should because it's just the connector, not the cable itself, but wanted to make sure before I did something dumb. Thanks! Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:56 PM PST Hi everyone, big noob here. I just had Charter's tech guy come through my apartment. He examined the outside of the building and my connections to the modem and everything checked out. The issue is this: the modem outputs advertised speeds (I pay for 600 down, 35 up. Hardwired from the modem it's around 490). When testing hardwired to the Asus RT-AX58U I got in September, it gives around 280 down. Firmware is updated. Testing with an older router gives only 120. I consistently only get 100 download, 25 upload over WiFi 6 5ghz band. I only have 3 devices on this band and have done all the scanning for a non-congested channel. The tech says that I either need another router or to wait for a firmware upgrade. We tested with multiple ethernet cables from the modem to the router, yet the speeds stayed around 50-100mbps download. Not sure how to proceed from here. My house is a 700 square foot apartment with plaster walls, but even standing next to my router, I get the same speeds as my office. Any way to get around this? All help is very appreciated. Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:01 PM PST I'm looking to run ethernet out about 600-800 feet then T off and run 300~ feet either direction to power two tp link outdoor access points. I plan on burying cables the whole way after leaving the original building then up to the poles that ap points will be on. My question is how many ethernet boosters do I need? In my head I need to put one every 328 feet/100 meters. So 1)run a 100 meter cable from building 2)put a booster 3) run another 100 meter cable 4)then maybe another booster 5) 100-150 foot cable 6) put a booster that has two outputs 7) run cable 300 feet left and one 300 feet right to my ap points 2, 3, and 4 may be skipped depending on if second 100 meter cable gets me far enough. At that point the booster with two outputs would be placed there and t off Is this how ethernet poe boosters work? I've seen a few advertised to boost like 3000+ feet but I wasn't sure if those would be enough power to power two ap's or if they were for specialty things. If I do need to buy like 3-4 of them I'll probably just instead run 120 power out the 600-800 feet then just run the 100 meter ethernet cables left and right from there. The access points will be running in mesh anyway back to main point so I don't necessarily have to run ethernet all the way out to them [link] [comments] |
Network Box and Patch Panel Recommendation Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:42 PM PST Hello, I will soon be renovating a home where i can finally run Ethernet Networking. This will be a first for me and am looking for recommendations on some sort of Networking Box that can handle a patch panel, I would only need 8-12 ports. [link] [comments] |
MoCA not working with Comcast's XB3 modem/router Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:35 PM PST I have an XB3 modem/router from Comcast that supports MoCA. I have already enabled it in the admin page, and the MOCA light on the back of the XB3 is lit up. I bought a goCoax MoCA adapter and a MoCA compatible splitter. I also ordered a POE filter, but it has not arrived yet. I am trying to get things up and running to make sure that everything works, but I will be sure to install the POE filter once it arrives. Here's how I have things set up: internet coax cable ---> splitter ---> XB3 / MoCA Adapter. With this setup, I get internet no problem, but MoCA doesn't work. The MoCA light on the goCoax adapter is off. The only lights that are on are the power light and LAN light (as long as I have the ethernet attached to something). Any thoughts as to why my set up is not working? [link] [comments] |
How to access a wired Hard disk drive from a wi-fi smart TV through local network? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:03 PM PST Hi, I just bought a new TV and I would like a way to access my external hard disk drive that is wired on my local network. My HDD is a ''WD My book live'' that is directly wired (ethernet) to my router. I can easily access it from any computer in my house (wired or wifi) as well as my phone through its local IP adress, which is 192.168.0.154. However my new TV is not a computer and I have no idea how to access it. But we're in 2020 and I'm sure there is a way to do so. There is a ''Connect to remote PC'' function''. I entered the IP adress, but I don't know what to put in as username / password. I tried my PC credentials to log in, but it didn't work. Do you have a solution for me? Is it possible to access my external hard drive (wired to my local network) from my new smart TV that is connected via wi-fi to my network? TV model: Samsung Tizen HDR DEL 4K Thanks! Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:53 PM PST Hi people smarter than me. Long story short, the internet connection upstairs in our home is shit. For example, on my Xbox One, I get a max download speed of 38mbps over wifi upstairs. Downstairs, right next to my modem, I get a minimum of 250mbps. I understand that being farther away from the modem will dilute the connection but the speeds up there are ridiculous and needs to be fixed. I bought this (below) because Comcast doesn't allow a second modem and the signal upstairs is not strong enough for the crappy wifi boosters they give you or another wireless router. Actiontec 802.11ac Desktop WiFi Extender with 4 Internet Antennas 5GHz, Gigabit Ethernet, Bonded MoCA for Whole Home Fast WiFi (WCB6200Q) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BV1Y3W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_O146Fb1GWG63Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 We tried connecting it upstairs to the coax outlet and the coax signal light refuses to turn on. We then tried connecting it straight into the source line using a splitter (with the modem) and that doesn't work either. MOCA is enabled on the modem so we should not need any other adapters... and still this refuses to work. Help please. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 06:50 PM PST So our house used to have wired either net, and our modem/router was downstairs in the basement, where the Ethernet cables currently are. My family got a new internet service provider and a new modem, the Xfinity Dual-Band WiFi 802.11ac XB3 and we moved it upstairs to get better wifi coverage across the whole house at the expense of wired internet. I am wondering if we could get a router and put it where our modem currently is and then put the modem downstairs with the Ethernet cables for wired internet? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 06:47 PM PST Looking to replace 5 yr old Apple airport wifi router and want to know what router to buy? 3 levels to house and about 5,500 sq feet. My modem and current router are on main level (middle). I'd love the wifi to reach all corners of the house and outside as well. Have 3 kids that like to play Xbox and have other needs as well such as streaming tv(s), computers, security system, security camera, etc. I have 40 mbps service through CenturyLink. What router should I get? TIA [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 06:39 PM PST I would like to share about 3 Terabytes of data between my computers at home. I was using an Asus router with a USB 3.0 solution which worked great, until it didnt, and now I cant get write access on it using Samba, and seems like Samba is a no-no. I do NOT want access from the internet, I prefer security. Just something for computers on my wifi to share data. I am not interested in building something that takes a lot of power and heat and software updates, maintenance, though I have built several desktops in the past. I do have a spare laptop, perhaps I could just run that 24/7, but I dont know if the old Asus laptop will take that type of use. It is Windows 10 [link] [comments] |
Extend internet to neighboring house? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:50 AM PST I am wondering if there's a way to extend the internet I have, which is ethernet, to my parents' house about 70 yards away? The issue is they live on some property technically outside community limits, and no internet company is willing to go up the county road and out their long driveway to provide a cable for them. They have really poor cell service internet. But we live a road behind them, on a neighborhood street with great internet access and it seems like there should be a way to just extend our cable out our backyard to their house 70 yards away. Any thoughts on how this might be possible? Thanks so much. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:50 PM PST Hi. I bought and set up a router to use as an access point for my Oculus Quest 2 wireless VR headset to use with the Virtual Desktop app. I don't have an Ethernet connection; only Wi-Fi using an external USB adapter (with antennas) connected to my PC. I connected the router I bought to my PC using an Ethernet cable, and I get decent latency when connecting to that network using my Quest 2. However, while I can play offline games, I can't play online games as the AP network has no Internet connection. Is there a way to connect my secondary router access point to my Wi-Fi network or external USB Wi-Fi adapter so I can also get an Internet connection for online games? I tried the network sharing feature, but that makes a new DHCP server, which makes my Internet connection unusably slow. It also didn't work in the first place as my Quest 2 still didn't have an Internet connection when connected to the network. Any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Using a Wireless Router in AP Mode vs Using a Wireless AP Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:56 AM PST I have two areas of my home that are currently being used as offices and am having issues getting a good wireless signal to both (Router is a Nighthawk R 7200). My plan was to run an ethernet cable to the second office and setup an old router in AP Mode. Unfortunately after I ran the cable I found out the old router was broken. So I need to purchase a new AP. This AP will likely only serve 4 devices at once (computer, printer, phone, smart speaker), but I would want to make sure it could handle at least 10 devices. My question is: For purchasing a device to act as a wireless AP is there any reason I should be buying a device designed as a wireless AP vs buying a wireless router and setting it up as an AP? Wireless routers seem to be cheaper for better range than the wireless APs I have found. I found a refurbished TP-Link A7 AC1750 for $28 and was thinking of using that as the AP. Thanks! QoS with Source IP and Destination IP Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:38 PM PST I have a CenturyLink router (C1100Z) and my internet plan is very slow. I need to prioritize some devices over others and I believe QoS is the way to do so. This router model is much different than any other online tutorial so I came here for help. Here is a screenshot to show what I'm working with: https://imgur.com/a/KZNsYIF My local machine IP is locked on 192.168.0.151 and my routers default gateway is 192.168.0.1 As you can see I tried adding my own priority rules however in a different menu it shows that no priority traffic is active "High Priority Packets: 0" so I must have done something wrong. While setting up the priority rule I must select a DSCP Classification which I'm not sure which one to pick. The options include: (CS1 - CS7), (EF), (AF11 - AF43). If it matters, I'm using this machine to play online games. I'm really lost on what I need to do. Do I need to use public IP instead of local? [link] [comments] |
