Is anyone using DC current to power your network hardware to avoid rectifying AC from a UPS? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:14 PM PST All of my networking equipment have rectifiers that concert AC power into DC before it enters the device. They are also connected to a UPS. This would seem to be inefficient as in the event of a power failure as my UPS is converting DC battery to AC, which is then converted to DC again by the rectifier on my router, switch and modem. My idea was to connect all of my devices directly to a battery, and connect the battery to AC. Essentially, connecting all of components to a DC UPS. Anyone ever done something like this? Effects of mixing Wifi5 and Wifi6 devices on a Wifi6 network Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:44 AM PST I'll looking at tossing out the FIOS tosh and running a proper ubiqiuti network now their wifi6 kit is starting to roll out. However, I'm unable to find any details of how a Wifi6 AP operates with both wifi5 and wifi6 devices mixing traffic simultaneously. Does the AP step down all traffic to the lowest common denominator protocol (i.e. the wifi5 devices), or can it run both protocols concurrently so the wifi6 devices still get a benefit? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:42 PM PST Description: 1in flex conduit from router panel to exterior service location. There is currently no fiber options available in this particular area but I imagine that will change in the future. Is this something that will be needed? I declined it bc I assume its not necessary if theres older homes who have the ability to have fiber. [link] [comments] |
I have completely ADHD'd the crap out of my network! Surprisingly it's not working out so great. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 04:13 PM PST Since my wife, daughter, and myself are work / schooling from home, I decided to "improve" my home network. In reality I have turned it into a complete mess. It is dropping constantly and I frequently have to reboot everything. After doing a little here, a little there over the past 10 months and reading way to many posts, I am absolutely lost. My end goal was to have a solid internet / wifi connection and to get MoCa setup since I have coax going to every room in the house. I would be so grateful for some help. All of my "great ideas" have failed and the timing of my network extravaganza could not have been worse. What in tarnation was I thinking! Here is a diagram of the mess [mess](https://i.imgur.com/IpOcLZI.jpg) [link] [comments] |
Best method for getting cables from attic into closet? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:03 PM PST When our home was built 3 years ago, I had 32 cat6 drops pulled into a closet in my laundry room. I've since outgrown the small, wall mounted rack in that closet and I'm moving my equipment into a 27u wheeled rack in a closet in another room. There will likely be around 40 wires coming into the closet from the attic above. The first installation had wires run down the wall from the attic and exciting thru multiple low voltage wall plates. Is there a better/cleaner way to get this many wires into a space? I don't want to create a rodent highway or huge hvac leak, but I figured I would explore other options before jumping in. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:40 PM PST This is going to be such a noob question for this sub but I'm not sure where else to go. Thank you in advance for your help! We are in the process of building our house when my contractor asked me about outlets / coaxial / cat6 boxes. We will have an office where the modem / router are centrally located however in the basement and living room there will be outlets paired with a coaxial OR cat 6 outlet (our choice). My question is can you have a modem in the office, and still have an ethernet connection from that cat6 outlet in the basement living room? Or is the only way to buy a modem and have it installed in the [link] [comments] |
Switch models with firmware update via browser? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:20 PM PST Hi all, I was looking for a 16-24 port managed (or 'smart' managed) switch but it seems that brands like Netgear and TP-Link rely on Windows-based apps for firmware upgrades. Are there any brands that offer updates from within the web UI? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Wifi Router Upgrade for Home with 2 Families Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST Hi, I am looking to upgrade my wireless router (Linksys WRT 1900 ACS). It's having problems as it can only connect few devices as the same time. I have about 25 to 30 devices connected to the wireless router at the same time. The internet speed that I currently have is 300-350mbps. The size of my home is about 2000 sqft with two floors. I also have a Plex server and use it actively for local streaming. The price range I am looking for is between $250 to 350 CAD. Let me know what router you guys think would be the best fit. [link] [comments] |
unable to see my wifi network on my ps4 console, im not MAC blocked what could be the issue ? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 04:55 PM PST for the past few days the wifi was working well, Although I was having some issue with the wireless controller having some latency, so I had to move my ps4 around, the thing is , this was causing for some reason malfunction on my brother who uses cable, he called the ISP and now its not working, I cant see the Wi-Fi network, its not hidden as I can connect with other devices and it doesn't seem to be mac filtered either, so after looking around in the router configuration page, I saw theses options maybe they did something that is disrupting the ability of the console to connect to the internet, If anyone can help I'd be really grateful, thanks ! the settings are as follow: Bandwidth: 20MHz Control Band: Upper Channel: 13 Current channel:13 Rate:Auto Transmit power: 100% Band 2.4GHz (B+G+N) [link] [comments] |
How do you run cables in a house? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 04:50 PM PST I've done many commercial cabling jobs, where you have a drop ceiling and you can just go in through the top of the walls and run your cables through. But houses don't have drop ceilings, so how do you run cables in a house? Are you pretty much SOL if the house wasn't cabled at the time of construction? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 08:07 PM PST The bug bit me in the last couple days to look into an LTE backup for my internet, and I'm curious what people's experiences are with the options. I'm using a Unifi UDM-P as my router, and my primary WAN is Fios. The unifi LTE device is ruled out due to cost (data/subscription, not device), and since I plan to use a spare google fi sim. Otherwise I've looked at the Netgear LB1120 and LB1121, and some of the Cradlepoint options. My read is that Cradlepoint is the way to go, but I'm a bit overwhelmed with the options. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 08:04 PM PST Hi all I am based in Canada and I want to establish wired home network in our new house(basement, main and top floor). I did the whole inspection of current wiring and found that all top floor bedrooms have telephone ports , checked inside to found that cat 5e are used everywhere. There is a coaxial port on main floor, another coaxial port in finished part of basement( where I will put tv). There is a network connectivity hub in the unfinished part of basement where all telephone and coaxial wires end up. Outside main isp coaxial wire is split into into 2 different wires going in main floor and basement. I have mapped out converting telephone ports into rj45 keystones. I want to place my gigabit modem/router on main floor, then run cat 5e from modem to connectivity hub. I want to hardwire my tv as well by cat 5e to connectivity hub. There I will place a switch connecting all wires to top floor rooms and basement. I have brief idea about fishing wires using slim polyester wire and duct taping to existing coaxial. I need help from where to buy keystones, connectors, wall plates etc. What switch I should buy? Will 8 port be enough ? Will cat 5e be enough for next 10 years ? PrimeCables.ca has best prices but delivery is only free after 50$. Am I missing something that I should keep in mind? Any help will be really appreciated [link] [comments] |
Best 3rd party router upgrade for optimum? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST I have around 10 devices in my household. I game often and need better speed. Any advice would be great, please keep it simplified if possible. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 04:16 PM PST Hey! I have currently a gigabit connection at home which I am using with a Mikrotik RB1100Ahx4, but I wanted to add some protection. I have a few services available from the outside, but nothing too critical (Plex, VPN etc.). I have a server running 24/7, which has a free ethernet port. It has 8GB of ram and a e3 2130 cpu which is utilized to about 40%. Its running Proxmox. Is it capable handling gigabit connection? (More realisically its about 200-500mbits down and 100 up on average.) My current setup: modem->patch->Mikrotik->switch ->server I thinking about this: adding another connection to ...switch->server which would mirror Mikrotik->switch traffic. Or should mirror modem->Mikrotik connection? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
A switch to a switch or upgrade my router? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:27 PM PST My house was prewired with CAT5e used as telephone. I terminated all to RJ45 and reused a switch I found in the basement. I have no APs or wifi extenders so so far my modem/ router combo (I know, I know) is in the bonus room because I can get decent wifi through the entire house with it there, then I connect one ethernet cable from the back of there into the HTPC and one into the wall to go down to the switch in the basement. Here's where I'm at now. I got a new TV recently and decided to connect that directly to the router because I wanted the best connection to the 4k HDR apps like Netflix and the HTPC currently can't do that so it's on wifi now. I'll be updating the HTPC fairly soon and having it double as a NAS which I'll want wired for so the question I have is should I finally upgrade my ISP router even though it serves its purpose for this house with one that has more ports and better wifi or just get a switch for this room that'll also connect to the switch in the basement? Hardwire Kills SOME WiFi devices Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:55 PM PST Hi everyone, So kind of an interesting one, and the help would be much appreciated. I have a friend with a TP Link Deco S4R mesh network. Over the weekend I ran a hard line from his PlayStation 5 directly to the main Deco router. Everything seemed fine, but then earlier today I got a call that a couple Wi-Fi devices weren't able to connect to the Internet. It was kind of a head scratcher, but then when he removed the new line, everything worked fine. Haven't looked at the line yet, but why now? Can't think of anything changing between Saturday and Monday (today). The devices that weren't able to connect, a laptop and a TV, we're fine and working until today. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Docsis 3.0 or 3.1 for 400mbps Internet Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:48 AM PST I current have the TC-7610 modem . I upgraded my Xfinity internet from 200mbps to 400mbps. I noticed that while I was getting close to the advertised upload speed, the download was capping at around 274. I noticed on the TC-7610 website that the modem is End of Life and caps the speed at 343mbps. I suspect I need a modem with more channel bonding support to get close to 400mbps. Should I get a Docsis 3.0 or 3.1 modem ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:44 PM PST I've got a PS2 connected to a Raspberry PI running an SMB server so that I can play games without using the disc drive/use ps3/4 controllers. The details of the setup are here, if that matters. A little while back, I noticed instability during longer play sessions (crashes at loading screens, assumably because the game needed to read from the disc) and couldn't figure out why. Eventually, I wound up sticking a router between the two for a different reason and that fixed the problem completely. I was wondering if anyone here knows why that would fix it? If possible, I want to eliminate the device between them (or at least use something smaller, currently its an old linksys my dad through dd-wrt on ages ago). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:41 PM PST Howdy everyone. Currently looking to completely overhaul my current network set-up and also swap ISP to Verizon 200/200 Fios. As of now, my WAN cable is coax which splits into my modem and my main MoCa bridge. Modem goes into a small, crappy DD-WRT router acting as a dedicated gateway/DHCP server. DD-WRT goes into managed switch serving an AP and a backbone MoCa bridge. Basement and top floor both have MoCa bridges/APs which serve Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I have a T620 on the way which is going to replace my DD-WRT router and will be a pfSense firewall/router and handle routing for VLANs on each floor + 1 extra VLAN for various IoT devices. The coax cabling is old as hell and Ethernet drops will probably be too expensive/labor-intensive so I'm looking at requesting a Fios install with Ethernet directly from ONT which would go into pfSense > Managed switch > powerline adaptor(s). Any advice on this potential set-up? TLDR: Looking at getting Fios, would it be advisable to request Ethernet install directly from ONT, and serve this WAN connection over powerline adaptors to 2 other floors? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:41 PM PST Brand new here and no clue what I'm doing. Just bought a new house and they set up the router at one of the house and naturally the other end has awful WiFi signal. They did wire an Ethernet cord from the router into the middle of the house but not long enough to get to the "office". Can I wire a mesh point where that cord is to help get WiFi to the other end of the house? What products are best? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:51 PM PST Hello all, I have a regular cable ISP with there modem, and old router from my isp. When one of us works from home, 2 cellphones, ipad, tv on wifi, and my main computer hard wired (passes through my router as well) I get terrible latency when gaming and internet crashes on all aforementioned devices. I get 150 down and 30 up normally when my lady is not working from home on her two laptops. I believe she uses a VPN or remote connection on a secured network to connect to work. My router is atleast 5 years old and its a super basic cylinder. I am pretty sure getting a new one will help this situation as my ISP speeds should be enough. May someone please explain why my network is tanking when all is going on, is it my router? If so is there any recommendations? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:24 PM PST I really can't figure out what caused this jump? I was watching live streams for a a long time to get drops but this doesn't seem like it would make it jump that quickly. [link] [comments] |
Powerline Adapters with Wifi Built In Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST How does the wifi work? Does it use the electrical wiring in the house to create the wifi signal? Or does it function like a normal wifi extender and just rebroadcasts the already existing wifi signals from the router? Also would using a powerline adapter + AP (like ubiquiti ap or tp-link EAP245) work better in terms of wifi performance? Thinking of ways of getting rid of the wifi extender without MoCa adapters or running long Ethernet cables in a house. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
