Dell XPS 15 or Asus Zephyrus G14

Dell XPS 15 or Asus Zephyrus G14

Dell XPS 15 or Asus Zephyrus G14

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:23 AM PST

Hey everyone I need your thoughts and inputs for my next laptop to buy. I was previously a MacOS user, but because applications that I need to use only work on windows, I'm thinking of switching to Windows. So far I'm boiling down to two options: Dell XPS 15 and Asus Zephyrus G14. I have read and watched enough review that AMD is thrashing Intel now, but I'm not entirely convinced with using AMD (never used one). I'm a grad student that does a little bit of ArcGIS, a little bit of programming, a lot of typing, and very light video/photo editing on the side. I don't really foresee using laptop for gaming (I'm a console gamer, i know such travesty).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
USD 2000-2500, US. It's a bit pricey but I see it as an investment, because I plan to use the laptop for 4-5 years.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Preferably new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life, Ultrabook. Especially in today's day of zoom university, I don't think I'm gonna need that awesome portability and battery life. I would prioritize build quality and performance because I want the laptop to last for some time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not really that important, but I'm not really into huge gaming laptop either.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-15 inch is okay.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - ArcGIS, Spyder, Premiere Pro, Lightroom
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - not really
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Good, comfortable keyboad for long form writing is a must, the rest is optional.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Don't have anything more to add here. Probably if anyone has other suggestion other than XPS15/Zephyrus G14, I'd be happy to hear those.

    Thank you all

    A good casual Laptop

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:03 AM PST

A friend of mine has asked me to help her find a decent basic laptop, uses would be to get on Facebook, do Zoom calls, and perhaps some very light gaming like The Sims or Rollercoaster Tycoon.

I found this Dell for $399 and wanted to get some opinions on it. Alternate suggestions are good as well.

    <£300, UK

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:37 AM PST

A list of budget 11th gen Intel or 4th gen Ryzen laptops under £300 would be amazing.

Looking for something new. The brief is "lots of storage". I as a PC guy know that an SSD for boot and "lots of would improve life

    They don't know PCs.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £300

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, but in good condition

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.) < build quality < performance < battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Standard weight, obviously lighter = better

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Preferably >13 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No. Office/web browsing/book writing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    NA

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    NA

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The brief is "lots of storage". I think a quad core/2c4t and ssd+hdd would be useful. Not sure how much "lots of storage" is. I mentioned one with 1TB, and they were asking about whether they could expand it.

This is for a friend of a friend, and both are tech illiterate. Left alone, they would probably get a 2c2t bulldozer with 1tb hdd and antivirus. They even started asking about touchscreens randomly.

I have seen haswell quad cores with 16gb ram within budget, but I am considering whether something more recent would be better, with a modern design and better battery life + newer battery.

Preferably something that looks modern and nice, and in near pristine condition if used. Looks weren't mentioned, but I know a good looking laptop can trick the brain into accepting its flaws better than an ugly boxy one.

A list of budget 11th gen Intel or 4th gen Ryzen laptops under £300 would be amazing. I want to leave then with something they won't be asking me to replace a year or 2 down the line.

    Legion 7i 15" or Legion Y740 17"

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:15 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm really stuck on what to pick here and seeing how lots of their stuff has already sold out it's making deciding that much harder.

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/d/gaming-laptops?sort=sortBy&currentResultsLayoutType=grid&visibleDatas=facet_ScreenSize%3AScreen%20Size%3A17%27%27#compare

I can't decide if it's better to go with the newer 15" Legion 7i because of it's screen or shilling out a bit more for a pimped out 17" Legion Y740. Considering I live in a small apartment with my wife and don't have space for a desktop this will function solely as a gaming and movie laptop (when I'm watching stuff solo not on our beamer) that will move from our table to being put away when it's dinner time. It's why I'm only looking at the heftier metal laptops, but I just really can't decide if the 17" screen is that much more worth it, I've never had one before but I really miss the days of my desktop PCs when I was younger. I don't think a brighter screen necessarily entices me? Any recommendations or help on this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Need a new laptop as I broke the old and slow laptop I had before

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:31 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    Total budget

-Around $900, anything below that is fine

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Refurbs or used is fine if it means better quality for a lower price

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Good build quality, great performance, and a good 8 hour battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-I would like for it to not be heavy and thinness shouldn't be an inch like some gaming laptops

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

-Not really but I'd prefer something with 13 inches or more

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-I would like for it to multitask between apps such as Firefox, Spotify, and zoom and I'd like for it to be decently good with a i5 or ryzen 5 with 8gb of ram min in order to do some light editing for videos when I have a project and possibly for some productivity if I ever need to.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-If it can run csgo at 60 FPS I think that would be fine but I don't think I'll actually plan to do any gaming on it and I may just get a desktop for that.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-It should have a good keyboard for typing out essays, sturdy build so that I don't break it like my last one, I don't need a touch screen, should have as mentioned before a ryzen 5 or i5 and atleast 8gb along with atleast 256gb of storage. Also it NEEDS a good screen or else I'm gonna hate myself for having my eyes suffer and I'm gonna end up breaking it, so it should have good viewing angles and good color.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-I don't want a bad screen. Preferably would like windows and as long as it can multitask between a video call, Spotify, and online work without breaking a sweat I would be happy with it.

Suggest me a good laptop for about ~$1330 (read for details)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:47 AM PST

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Ans: Approx: $1330 without shipping of 30 bucks (myUS)

Are you open to refurbs/used? Ans: Not particularly

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ans:A thin 2-in-1 ultrabook with great performance that has excellent build quality. Battery life is not a major issue as long as it lasts more than 4h in web browsing. I would prefer a dGPU. Thermals have to be good as my old laptop overheated and destroyed my desk.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Ans. A lot since I travel a lot and don't want to lug around what would seem to be a rock in my bag/hands.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ans. 14" and above

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Ans. Yes I would be gaming a bit with very little photo editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ans. A mix of GTA V, Minecraft, Forza Horizon and Need for speed.

GTA V : 60+ FPS at high - very high

Minecraft : 100 FPS+ at max settings (optifine)

Forza Horizon : 30+ at medium to high settings

Need for Speed : 45+ FPS at medium - high settings

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/ touchpad)? Ans: Would prefer a touch screen but isn't necessary and Windows hello and a good display with 100%sRGB or better. Trackpad has to be good as I will be using it most of the time when I'm not gaming. Build quality would be great if it's as good as an XPS but they're way too overpriced for what you're getting

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.- Ans. Would prefer if it comes in black or dark grey as it'll match my other tech but not important. I will also be importing from the US to the UAE and I will be using myUS for it. Also no MacBooks.

Durable laptop with Disk drive and Headphone Jack?

Would be good if it could run this: https://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=17102&game=Titanic:%20Honor%20and%20Glory too, but that's not required, especially if it would put it out of my price range.

    Need a laptop recommendation!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:20 PM PST

Hi! I literally bought the 15 inch lenovo ideapad s340 with ryzen 7 3700u today, however.. As soon as i opened it and turned it on, the fan became super loud to the point where it's a little annoying. Now i paid $600 on it in sale from $800 I think will return it because...

    • i actually wanted a 17" inch since i'll be working on it a lot, but settled for this because of the price

    • the only color available was dark blue and i prefered a gray or color more suitable for a girl (just my preference)

    • and ideally i also wanted a ryzen 7 4700 u. But that doesn't bug me so much

So as you can see there are quite a few things i'm not too crazy about, the most annoying thing is the loud fan though :/

I really need one asap and I've been looking constantly for the past week or so and just can't find the right one

So if you all have any recommendations for me, that would be amazing and a lot of help.

Here's some things i'm looking for

    • i prefer to have a backlight for the keyboard so i can see when working at night!

Looking for something reliable and versatile for around 900 USD

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I have a budget of about 900 USD (I live in the states), but could go a little over if absolutely necessary
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer new, but refurbished would be ok, provided there is some kind of warranty/coverage available.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'm really not concerned with touch screens of anything, though I really would like something that has moderate to excellent battery life and will have a long lifespan as a reliable laptop.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not at all- if anything I'd prefer a thicker/heavier laptop if that meant it came with better cooling and battery life
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
This laptop would mostly be for video calls and writing, though it would be nice to have the ability to do some light gaming as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Something that could run a game like Shadow of War at at least 45 fps would be ideal, so I don't need a massive beast of a machine since I usually do most gaming on my desktop, but something that could handle older games when I travel would be great.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A responsive touchpad and backlit keyboard would be great. Mostly I'm looking for something with a vibrant, bright, and colorful screen that has excellent contrast. Some of the leading contenders I've looked at (like the ASUS TUF506IU-ES74) have most of the specs I'd like, but have a number of reviews claiming the screen is really dull and has bland color
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This will mostly be a school/work machine where I do browsing, video watching, and writing, but some versatility would be great. Longer battery life would be a huge plus, but if need be I can always buy an external battery. Honestly the primary concern I have is that this should be a machine that lasts me a very long time. My current laptop is about 6 years old and has only recently run into issues with speed, the cam/mic, input from touchpad, and some ports. Hopefully a new machine would last at least as long.

    Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:25 PM PST

I need a cheap laptop with a removable battery. I will be using it for school, and as we mainly use google documents, it could also be a chromebook. Thanks in advance
