Macbook Air 2020 vs Dell Latitude 9410

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:13 PM PST

For work, I can choose between the two (price doesn't matter because it's the company's).

Have a desktop at the office, but this is for on the travel or working from home. Will have external monitors at home, and will mostly be doing research and working on large documents.

Macbook Air overheats...I normally am an Apple person but between the two I heard Dell might be a better business computer.

    Both are i5, 8GB, 256GB.

    Any thoughts/opinions? Thank you!

How is this for a university student that wants to play light games? Is there anything better at this price? (900~1200 €)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:37 AM PST

    https://www.unieuro.it/online/Notebook/16-a0020nl-pidHEW16A0020NL

Just want to play light games and use this for studying, probably some CAD next year, nothing too serious. Unfortunately in Italy even on Amazon it's hard to find good stuff at least for what I've seen, any suggestions?

**Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:*

    1200€

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance>build quality>battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light games and Cad next year

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Really light games, probably the only heavy one could be cod if I decide to play with my friend and I can keep everything to low but it has to run at least at 60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I like a full keyboard with the numpad, possibly ethernet and hdmi ports and at least one usb type A

    XPS 13 or Wait

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 01:04 PM PST

I posted before so I hope this isn't against the rules

I saw XPS cut its price down to $799 It's a laptop that I've been keen on getting because I just need a work laptop and I love the display and I need a good camera for seminars

...but then I heard apple might announce a new laptop next week. So I'm not sure whether to pull the trigger now, wait and see if it gets cheaper for Black Friday, or see about this new apple laptop.

    Thank you in advance

    Dell XPS 13 (i7) vs Dell XPS 15 (i5)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:32 AM PST

    Hi !

    I am considering buying a Dell XPS 13 (with i7) or 15 (with i5).

I would use it for mostly internet browsing, watching movies, excel financial modelling, light coding, occasional photoshop and light video editing

I currently have a macbook pro from 2014 (15 inches, 2.5ghz intel core quad core i7, 16GB, 1600MHz DDR3). I am a bit afraid to go to 13' because I am afraid I might find it too small but at the same time at XPS 13 I can afford better hardware (i7, 16GB etc.) which I cannot afford on the XPS 15. What do you think ? With my usage, should I rather go for XPS 13 (i7) or XPS 15 (i5) ?

    Cheers

is Intel core i5 10300h future-proof for the upcoming 4 years?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:59 AM PST

I'm a college student and currently taking Foundation in IT. I'm thinking about enrolling in AI degree course in the future. After doing a bit of research, I've found Acer Predator Helios 300 with Intel core i5 10300h and rtx 2060 fits my current budget but I wonder will that processor lasts me well for next couple of years? The one with core i7 is currently out of stock and there is no ETA for restock because of the shutdown. I do a little bit of light gaming on the side. For example, Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Genshin Impact.

Which Laptop to buy under these conditions.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:27 AM PST

Okay so I've been wanting to build a PC for a while now, only problem is that being a student I would need a laptop more as I need it in school etc. So I decided on getting a gaming Laptop and then attaching it to a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. Now my budget is around $1600. Can anyone guide me to the best products I can buy for the budget. Also the games I would really want to play are GTA 5, Skyrim and Friday the 13th so keeping in mind that the laptop can run them without problem. Thanks in advance!

    Cheaper Alternative for UX534FTC Recommendation?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:15 AM PST

Hi, I really like Zenbook UX534FTC, but it's above my budget. I'm looking for something capable of 5 years of usage at least without being obsolete.

Details of specification that I would like.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1300 EUR, in the Netherlands of Europe in general
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Being an amateur, I had bad experience with refurbs, so prefer something new. But if you can prove that it's really reliable, I might consider it.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
i7 or equivalent is a must, since my current laptop is i5 and I'm looking for an upgrade. Prefer something with at least 5 - 7 hours EFFECTIVE battery life, since most laptop manufacturer listed somewhat prolonged battery life compared to actual daily use. I mostly use my laptop on my room, but it's annoying to have only 3 hour of battery life or less in the rare occasion I need to be mobile.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not really important as long as I can be mobile. However, I love Asus design of thin laptop.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
minimum 14 inch, I don't mind something bigger.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Moderate gaming should be enough, since I mostly play on console. I'm considering to learn Deep Learning, so I'd like to know how different is the laptop recommendation with the capability to run Deep Learning software/algorithm and without it.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No specific request.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm currently using Acer Swift 3 (windows 10) and my general complaints are:

    - I noticed lag when running computation and Office's programme, even though I've upgraded the RAM to 8gb and the harddisk to SSD. My older Asus a46 laptop (running on windows 7), performed better in microsoft excel during its time.

    - Weak Chassis. My first laptop was also an ACER and had the same problem with chassis, especially the joint between the body and the monitor.

As I've said before, I'm considering to learn Deep Learning and would like to know if there's any different in recommendation for laptop capable of performing it and not.

This is my first time posting in this subreddit. Hopefully my description is clear enough.

Work (coding, statistics, WSL2 etc) heavy and casual gaming laptop! (Budget - 1500-1800€)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:29 AM PST

    Hei everyone,

My 2015 MBP finally gave up on me and I am on the lookout for a new one. But this time around I am looking for a windows laptop.

I would mainly work (coding, statistics, WSL2 etc) on it and only use it for casual gaming (Civ 6, Stellaris, CK 3). I already have a Ryzen 7/3700X+RTX 3070 system built, so having a top-notch graphics card in the laptop is not needed.

Budget is ideally within 1500€ or maximum of 1800€.

    What would be nice:

15.6" or above, good display (300 nits or more), portable (<2.2 kgs), USB-C charging, decent battery while working (5-6 hours +), good thermals OR very low fan noises and webcam.

Though if there is a really good laptop without a webcam I can take that too.

PS- Can't get Elekutronics or other variants of Tongfang chassis in Finland.

    Thanks!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important cause I travel a lot, upper limit is 4.lbs/2kg.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Lots of solidworks, autodesk, ansys, matlab. Little photo editing and video editing in photoshop and after effects respectively. No gaming.

      N/A.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Good keyboard is a plus.

    Need a gaming/art laptop

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:44 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$400, USA Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes. In fact it's probably preferred, given my low budget. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1, performance, build quality, battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 to 17 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and art. I enjoy games like the Borderlands series, The Witcher 3, Genshin Impact, the Dragon Age series, and generally its safe to assume I'll want to play any recent AAA games. As far as art goes I use Paint Tool Sai and I'm interested in learning Clip Studio Paint and potentially Photoshop. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I really enjoy my games high quality, and I try to play at medium to high settings, and I like a smooth 60+ fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is a necessity and touch screen would be nice, though I'll settle for something that can simply be drawn on with a digital pen. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't think I have any finishing thoughts.. help?

    $1000 usd

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, I've had good success with refurbed apple ipads/ipods I'm the last. Although I hear Macs aren't usually with their price tags

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I like the idea of the 2-1 but it's not mandatory, just preferred

How important is weight and thinness to you?

The lighter the better. I travel a lot for work and in general, at least pre covid.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 inches feels just about right for me and garanteed fits in my backpack well for flights

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Doubtful I'll play any games with it. Maybe runscape/hearthstone. Maybe...

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not really applicable

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Finger print reader is a feature I love. Touch screen is something I'd like as well

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I mainly just need a computer to multitask; update resumes, write some school papers, continued ed, research and to manage my life as a travel nurse. Things I've been able to get by with a cell phone and borrowing laptop/using hotel computers, but damn it's getting more and more difficult to do. Something simple and easy to use. If it requires tons of maintenance I will find a way to break it...

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pavilion-x360-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-warm-gold/6428666.p?skuId=6428666

Saw this one at local best buy Hawaii and almost got it. I don't need a laptop immediately, but something sooner than later is ideal, I have work stuff due soon and a laptop would make the process significantly easier.

    Thanks 🤙

Need travel-friendly laptop for writing, video editing, photo editing, music production, and occasional gaming < $1,500

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:58 PM PST

Hey everyone. I've been searching through nearly every recent post I could find in this group and watching endless review videos...still can't make up my mind. Here's my filled out form and below that I explained about my needs in more detail. *Really don't want to go the MBP route, btw.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
< $1,500 USD (purchasing in US) but willing to budge a bit if there is something that fits nicely. Would prefer less, so I can put the extra money towards my PC build. The laptop will be secondary when I'm able to use my PC for the same tasks, this is meant for when I'm not around my PC.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Depends on how used. Want something reliable.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is super important, as is performance and form factor. I need something travel-friendly, but also up to the tasks I throw at it. I'd like the best battery life I could get, obviously.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very. Like I said, I want it to be travel-friendly.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I'm open to suggestions, but I'm thinking between 13" - 15.6" (preferably 14").
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, StudioOne, Steam. Maybe even some programming stuff. Basic computer stuff (youtube, browsing, etc).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Regarding games, I usually play stuff like GTA, Tomb Raider, The Evil Within 2, Resident Evil, DIRT 2 etc. I don't need ultra settings, just something that is playable in medium-high is fine. Also, gaming is not primary usage, so please keep that in mind. I doubt I'll end up gaming on this more than a total of a month or two for the time that I own it.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Definitely would like a good keyboard and touchpad with reliable build quality (nothing dodgy). Would like a laptop with good sound quality for headphones and nice built-in speakers. Touch screen would be nice (which is why I considered 2 in 1, so I could do Photoshop with a pen, but figured that wouldn't work so well with the video editing, which is more important). Would like to have some USB A connectors, 3.5mm audio, sd card reader (would be open to without), hdmi connection. Open to suggestions. Also, I don't want anything that has thermal issues (going to be moving to a hot and humid place).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My story would be important for you to better understand my needs...

I'm planning a nomadic journey with my family and will be starting a youtube channel. Also, I'll be doing a lot of writing along the way, so keyboard touch is important. Now, I don't know a whole lot about editing yet, but I know that my old 2016 Dell XPS 13 isn't up to the task (I tried recently with 1080p and some light coloring with filters). So...I need a new laptop.

Once we move and get settled, I will be building a PC for all of the uses I mentioned, especially gaming (so the gaming aspect of the laptop is a nice to have, but not primary use). Until then, I need something mobile that will allow me to edit videos (1080p for now, but I'd like ability for 4k too). Screen color accuracy seems important in my mind. While we travel, I won't be able to bring my desktop with me, so I need this to be able to handle the job.

I'm going to be writing a book and plan on a career of professional writing, so I need a good keyboard (My Dell XPS 13 is decent and suppose can use that instead). Very important to mention that I don't want any shoddy quality, I'm willing to pay a bit more for something that is built better.

What I've been looking at so far is:

    Dell XPS 13 & 15

    Lenovo X1 Extreme & Legion 5

    Some Asus Zenbook models

    Acer Concept D7

    Razer Blade 15

    MSI Creator 15

And some 2 in 1's, but I don't think they will be good for my needs.

Would love some advice on what I should get, especially with all of the Black Friday deals around the corner. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you so much for your help!

Durable, larger laptop for coding, Linux reliable

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:47 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$600 to $800 USD, flexible. But if I can get something that fits these requirements for less, that's ideal.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Just learned what an Ultrabook is, and I'm into those. Build quality I'd like to be top tier, performance is important to me but I'm not trying to break the bank. Battery life is really important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      On a scale from 1-10, I'd say a 6.5

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      I'm thinking larger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This will mostly be for a venture into web development as a career change, but prior to this I did do a lot of CAD, and I'm a craftsman so it'd be nice to have the ability to do that as well. I also do 3d printing often. But right now the primary intended use is for coding. I've decided to remove cad use as a requirement. This machine will be 80% for coding. My current desktop works fine for cad.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A, this machine won't be for gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I have semi large hands and "sausage fingers". I have a surface pro 3 and absolutely hate typing on it, it's too small. Obviously keyboard is important in coding, so I'm thinking a larger keyboard is pretty important. I would also like it to be heavy duty/durable as I can be clumsy. Also, a decent webcam seems like a good idea as I'll be working remote often and will eventually need to be able to have video conferences.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have done a bit of searching on similar threads in here and r/learnprogramming, and many people suggested lenovo thinkpads. They seem like good machines for my purpose and appear to be good with linux, and so far those are what I'm currently looking into. But I don't know which model would be best for me and also am open to other options! Thank you!

Can I play Cyberpnk2077 on my laptop? I've mentioned minimum required specs and those of my laptop. I know I've the Windows version, Ram & the SSD space needed. But I doubt, I have the right CPU & the Graphics Card. Please check and let me know.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:27 PM PST

    Back Story :

To start off, I'm not a Gamer & not someone who knows how PC specs work. I mean I sure have been playing Minecraft for 6+ Years & I've played NFS World for all 5 years of it's existence, RIP. But my experience with gaming ends there.

But when it comes to Cyberpunk2077, it's something I've been keeping track of since 2016. I mean 15 year old me was in love with the idea of the game.

At first I thought I definitely won't be able to play it this year(considering it launches). The reason being, I don't have a gaming computer to play it on. But I just saw the specs required to play it, that gave me hope and maybe I can run it on my laptop. If it launches this year.

    My Laptop Specs :

I don't have a gaming laptop, but I want to play Cyberpunk2077. I've compared my laptop's specs with required specs for Cyberpunk, below. Let me know if I can run it.

Cyberpunk2077 - Minimum Required Specs My Laptop
    64bit Win10 64bit Win10
    Intel Core i5-3570K Intel Core i7-8565U @ 1.80 GHz
    8GB Ram 16GB Ram
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 3GB Nvidia GeForce MX250 4GB
70GB HDD (SSD recommended) 500 GB SDD

    Thank you!
