Quick Tipp: Quickly add forgotten argument

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:26 AM PST

So im using Linux for a good while and i just discovered this basic thing but i just didnt thought of it..You can add forgotten arguments at the end of the command!

    Example: Copy a directory

    cp dotfiles new_dotfiles

Error cp: -r not specified; omitting directory 'dotfiles/'

So what i did is arrow up to get the command back and arrow all the way to the left to add the -r argument between cp and the directory but you can also just add it on the back like that:

    cp dotfiles new_dotfiles -r

Its so basic but i never thought of it, i hope that i made someone more effective, using the commandline :)

How do I display text on the screen, similar to the "Workspace 2" text after having switched workspace?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:30 AM PST

I want to show messages to myself from various scripts. I want to show a message in the middle of the screen for a short time that I can't interact with. The kind of message I am talking about shows up when I press Ctrl+Alt+Right-arrow, and "Workspace 2" shows up in the middle of the screen. Or sometimes when you go into display settings and press detect displays it will say "Dislay 1" in the center of the screen.

    Here is an example: https://i.imgur.com/fUNZRuv.png

Trying to install Linux on an MSI Trident 3 - how to force to boot from USB?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:52 PM PST

Posting here due to lack of replies in the LinuxQuestions subreddit.

Trying to boot from a USB drive to install Linux on my new MSI Trident3 desktop. The USB key I am using boots on my laptop fine (a System76 Pangolin). The problem is on the desktop - it always boots to Windows. There is no MSI post screen and hitting function keys (I've tried them all though MSI support said use F11 then stopped answering emails)/esc/delete key during boot does not bring up the BIOS screen to allow me to choose a boot device.

In Windows10 I tried the Settings>Update & Security>Recovery>Advanced Startup>Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Firmware settings and restart - this simply caused the machine to freeze during start - doesn't go on to Windows but doesn't give firmware options screen either.

If I disconnect the hard drive will that force the machine to interrupt the POST and go to the BIOS setup screen? I am thinking at that point I can force it to boot to my install USB and install.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Nothing works (kinda)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:34 PM PST

Ok bit of an exaggeration there. I've tried Manjaro, PopOS, and Arch with KDE. They all have the same problems, way lower FPS in games, graphics issues like flickering at the side of the screen. I've switched from Windows to Manjaro to PopOS to Windows to Arch, and now I'm going to back to Windows. I'm not hating on Linux, I want to use Linux but it's these types of problems that stop me from using it. If there's anything I could do, please tell me. I have a gt 730 (might upgrade to rx 560), i5 3550, 12gb of ram.

    Auto update permissions

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:43 PM PST

I have an external Ext4 formatted drive on my network that multiple household users access. I would like files copied to (and from) to be accessible to everyone (755). I can manually update no problem, but often when one user has coped a file to the drive, others can't copy it to their local machine. Is there a way to automate this so I don't have to intervene every time? The drive is connected to a Linux Mint 19.3 machine in case it matters.

Can't edit main menu Ulyana 20

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:29 PM PST

No problem sorting and moving menu applets in Cinnamon 19.3 on my laptop. On my desktop with Ulyana they can't be copied and pasted to a different category. They can't be cut and pasted to another category. They can't be moved. I'd like to fix this, if it can be fixed.

    Linux options

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:03 PM PST

Hi Everyone, I posted this in r/linux and got a message to post here

I've never used Linux before and know nothing about coding, but would like to try it as an alternative to Windows....

Is there a Linux OS I can use 'straight out of the box' for someone completely new to this? Something similar to installing Windows?

I have a spare pc I can install it on with plenty of RAM/hard drive etc or I can partition my existing microsoft pc

    Thanks in advance

Is there a way to edit the specific command used to open an application on the terminal?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:14 AM PST

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04, so for example, to open up Visual Studio Code I type "$ code" on the terminal, or if I want Sublime Text, "$ subl". Is there a way I can edit these so I can type something more intuitive like "$ vscode" or "$ sublime-text"?

And is there a way to create my own commands, like, "$ steam-games-'specific_game' " to run a game, or "$ spotify-albums-'specific_album' " to listen to an album?

Why some packages have been kept back on "sudo update/upgrade"? [POP.OS.20.04]

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:09 PM PST

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

The following packages have been kept back:
    grub-common grub-efi-amd64 grub-efi-amd64-bin grub-efi-amd64-signed grub2-common

It is not a problem, since my grub is working properly, but I wanted to know why those files are not being updated. I've installed rEFInd to configure my grub, so my default grub can't be updated anymore? It is something I should worry about?

    Thanks!

Hey, ukw I'll throw my system or I will go jump off the cliff :) All I was trying is to reinstall opencv library but I got no idea what did I mess up and I'm getting the following error no matter what program I run.

    and the story continues...

Can someone please rescue and briefly explain why this could happen in the first place?

    What do I do??

Do I need to switch to AHCI for dual booting on multiple drives?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:51 AM PST

My current configuration is a 128 GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. Since the 128GB drive already has some software installed into it (along with Windows) I plan to install Ubuntu 20.04 on the HDD where I plan to create a 400 GB partition for all my files.

I have read that for Ubuntu to detect the SSD you have to change the mode from RAID to AHCI. However I wish for Ubuntu to only use the 400 GB partition on the HDD.

Furthermore, I don't intend to share files between the 2 OS's either. So is it a necessity to change the BIOS setting for the SSD from RAID to AHCI?

Also if you have any more tips regarding the dual boot pls feel free to share!

    Booting issues (Manjaro/Arch)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:57 AM PST

Hey everybody, I'm pretty new to Arch/Manjaro, but I wanted to do that step away from MacOS. My first intermediate step was to Linux Mint.

So I decided to change to Manjaro, the installation was quick and seemed to be easy....

But after all, when I try to boot without Live-USB I get:

Error 1962: No operating system found. Press any key to repeat boot sequence

But when I start with Live USB, I get the typical window from booting from live usb, but I can detect the already set up system with my username + password...

How can I make it run ?

    Some information about my system:

    Lenovo ThinkCentre M81(Tower)

    Samsung SSD 500GB
