A non gaming laptop that’s also good for games?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:48 PM PST

I'm looking for a laptop to run everyday tasks on, I'm an eco student and I also work in a bank and I I'm gonna need it for both of these as well. I'm also planning to learn coding so there's that too. I've had MacBook Pro 13" 2020 in mind for a long time now but now that I'm actually buying it I need to make sure it's the right choice.

I'm not a gamer, but I might want to run games like GTA or counter every once in a while on the laptop. I also need it to have a very light weight. I really prefer the macOS and that's my main reason for getting a MacBook but I'm open to consider better options.

Money is gonna be tight for a couple of years for me so please offer something I can hold on to for 5-6 years at least.

    Thank you. <3

*Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1400 USD at most

    *Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm not open to refurb/used options

*How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and performance come first to me.

*How important is weight and thinness to you?

It should be thin and lightweight

*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I rather its screen to be no wider than 13"

*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    As mentioned above

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    As mentioned above

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I don't have a precise budget just that it is below 2000€ and that it meets my criteria.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    I want something new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

The form factor is very important, I'd like a thin laptop if possible and with a nice design, performances allowing me to play League of Legend, nothing more greedy and an excellent battery if possible. But if isn't possible i'll get one laptop for daily uses.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I want something light and thin.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Yes, i want an 13-14 inch laptop because i'll put it in my bag everydays.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'am doing none of these, i'm just playing at League of legends and that's all.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to play à LoL at 60 fps min in medium-high.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like an IR camera if it's possible or a finger-print reader, or each ones ? I'll pay for the best i can afford. Build quality is very important, i don't want something cheap and the screen too, if it's possible to have 400 nits it'll be good.

I saw a lot of reviews on new Dell XPS 13 and that was my first choice but I have seen that a lot of people have problems with the thermals. The lenovo T14S (amd) seems interesting but in France we only have the version with R5 and not R7.

Sorry about mistakes, i'm French and everybody knows English isn't easy for us ....

Need advice on purchasing a new Microsoft laptop for a student (USA, preferably below 700 USD)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 02:44 AM PST

I'd really appreciate any advice :). I don't have much knowledge on computers, and I want to buy something solid, to make an informed purchase after years of owning some REALLY crappy laptops.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I would like to remain under 700 dollars, however I am willing to go a bit higher if it will provide me a drastic improvement in performance.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    -No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Priorities in the following order: Performance, build quality, battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Prefer something light and thin, perhaps below 3.5 pounds. I value portability as a student.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -14 inches preferably.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Don't plan on using any heavy editing software or doing much gaming as I'll mostly be using it for web browsing and school related stuff, but I would prefer something capable of running smoothly with multiple programs at a time.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchscreen):
    • -Looking for something with a smooth and responsive mousepad, touch screen capable, and a reliable quality. Would be nice to have USB C port for charging.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I am mostly looking for a laptop for everyday use, and I don't plan on using many demanding programs. I've had REALLY bad experiences with laptops before that haven't been able to run a few chrome windows and Spotify smoothly. Don't know if this is an issue with RAM, but I would prefer something that can run several basic programs (at the same time) smoothly. I'm not quite sure whether I should get an 8G or 16G RAM device. I'd also like something that would ideally last me 3-4 years.

    I appreciate any help :)

I Want to upgrade my gaming laptop to something that runs cooler

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:32 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I don't really have a maximum budget; I'll pay what I need to pay for a good computer. That said, I also don't really want to waste money on fluff like rainbow LED keyboards or form factor stuff.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Would rather get something new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor is irrelevant, although if possible I'd like something that looks like a regular laptop and not a weird race car. Performance is top priority, battery life is absolutely irrelevant to me.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I am okay with something heavy and bulky.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

My current PC is 17 inches, so I am looking for something around that size again.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming mostly.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play games that span the spectrum of performance, from indie stuff that could run on anything to newer AAA titles. I'd like something that can handle Cyberpunk 2077 when that comes out (if it comes out lmao) in December.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

As stated in the title of the post, I need something with a good cooling system. My current MSI has good performance for an older computer, but runs so hot that it can often be physically painful to touch the keyboard, even when playing older games (the specific instance I am thinking of writing this is when I was playing FFXIV, which is 7 years old at this point, and my laptop was so hot that I could barely even interact with the game without hurting my fingers). I want a computer that is going to stay cool whether I am playing a 7 year old game like FFXIV or a new release like Cyberpunk.

I'd also like a nice, tactile keyboard, but I don't need any of the fluff like LED backlights.

    Help find a laptop

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:11 PM PST

Choosing a prebuilt Laptop for my mom. She runs a business and uses quickbooks pro. She sometimes like to play games with me like Dead by daylight. That's not the major priority in this though. She needs something that can run quickbooks for years to come without issue. The laptop I've come up with is this, https://www.newegg.com/aluminum-black-msi-gt-series-gt75-titan-10sf-477-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834155640?Item=N82E16834155640 .I'd like to hear thoughts on this or other recomendations max budget is 3000 USD AFTER TAXES and it has to have atleast 1tb of storage SSD prefered. Side note, she has been using a dell laptop with a 3rd gen I5 and 16gb of ram. It was paired with a radeon gpu for some reason. I don't think the components worked together so well which is why her computer is dying. I understand it's overkill but it's what she wants people were hating in other subs cuz she wanted to spend the money.

    What laptop should I get?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST

Good evening everyone, hope you're well. Im looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that can come with a pen and a recommended wireless mouse.

For a simpleton like me, the most I do is schoolwork, Netflix, YouTube, iTunes, zoom, and photo edits with the built in photo app. Highly unlikely I'll play any games on it

Then I may have like 12-15 tabs open while iTunes and another two tabs open in another desktop. Not all the time but sometimes when i'm working on multiple things at the same time the tabs pile up. What would you guys basically recommend that I get?

I've looked into Dell (been told to avoid them), HP, and Asus. I would honestly prefer a bigger screen, no larger than 15 inches but I don't mind a smaller screen. Thank you for your time!

I'm currently based in the US, my budget is probably around 500-1000 USD, looking for a decent battery life maybe 5-6 hours. I doubt I'll play any games on it and a touchscreen would be a huge bonus.

    Best, -Matt

New Lenovo x1 Carbon Gen 7 keyboard is very noisy. Will it get quieter with use?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:04 PM PST

It is one of the loudest keyboards I've ever encountered in a laptop, especially the space bar. The truth is, I'd feel self-conscious using this item in a quiet library. Does it just need to be "broken in" or will it stay this volume? Keys feel more clacky and stiff than smooth/buttery.

    Gaming/Photo Library Laptop for ~SG$2-3k

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:33 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

In Singapore. Ideally ~SG$2000, but open to options up to SG$3000 if I can sell my existing laptop.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality & performance are important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very. I will mostly be using it at home. Just don't have the space for a permanent desktop rig, so will be putting it away at the end of each use.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll need a good photo library app — I was using Aperture for years, still haven't found a good replacement since. Tried Lightroom but I don't use most of the features (I rarely edit photos anymore) so it wasn't worth it for the price.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Will mostly play single-player RPGs like Fallout, Dragon Age. Haven't had much experience gaming on a laptop (I'm a console gamer), since Macs can't run a lot of stuff, so hard to say what I'm looking for specifically.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I like scissor-switch keyboards. Lots of storage (say at least 1TB) would be good, as my photo library is currently spread across multiple hard drives and it's a bit of a pain to keep it all together.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

These are the specs on my existing late-2016 13" MacBook Pro:

    • 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz

    • 8GB 2133MHz memory

    • 512GB PCIe-based SSD

    • Intel Iris Graphics 550

    • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

    • Touch Bar and Touch ID

Like many others, the butterfly keyboard infuriated me. But at that time my trusty MacBook Air had died and I needed a new laptop asap, so I went with what was familiar.

I am open to buying a new MacBook, but given that I rarely edit photos anymore, it doesn't seem worth paying that much for a glorified photo library. Also not super keen on getting a basic laptop just for the sake of managing photos, so thought I'd explore getting something that I can game on too.

What is the best budget laptop for physics simulations and coding while studying Mechatronics at university?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:28 PM PST

Would also like to run games like the Witcher 3 but that is a luxury I can live without. Gaming wise indie games would be fine

I would prefer windows integrated software but lenient if the laptop specs are fine

    <$1000 (AUD)

Would primarily use for 3D Mechanical modelling software, coding and physics simulations while in class / at the library

And if it is any correlation I'm also Australian

Performance, build quality, form factor, battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      None

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, video editing (da Vinci Resolve), photo editing (photoshop, illustrator)

Cyberpunk 2077 (ultra) Witcher 2 (ultra) Crusader Kings 3 (ultra)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really, a keyboard that's average would be preferred over a bad or terrible keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am thinking of going with Sager for their 2070S but with Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming around, I was thinking I might wait and see if I can get a good deal on an RTX 2080 or better laptop. A lot of the cheaper RTX 2080 I've seen either don't have enough RAM or they are max-q or they have terrible storage capacity.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

The laptop is for my wife. She'll be using this laptop for work which includes use of the Adobe Suite (though not really photo or video editing, mostly just editing illustrations and vectors which I don't think needs a GPU) and a bunch of writing and general use stuff. She also teaches on the laptop online during the coronatimes.

She doesn't really care about the 4K, but if I'm going to spend over $1500 on something, I feel like it's a reasonable ask. But in Canada, it seems impossible at my price range. I'd also be fine with 1440p, but it doesn't seem to exist in laptops?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2000 CAD, prefer $1750 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
All very important. Battery slightly less so.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Prefer portable, but doesn't have to be waifish. No 17-inches.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inch. Flexible though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Adobe illustrator, some light photoshop use.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Minecraft, stardew valley would be nice?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      No.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      See above!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    New laptop for college junior

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:26 PM PST

My son has an old Lenovo Z580 (2013) and it's finally starting to show its age. I upgraded the HDD to an SSD a couple years ago which helped a lot, but now it's starting to overheat and have performance issues. So we're shopping for a new laptop or might consider a Macbook. I'm not very Apple knowledgeable so can't support him very well on that vs a windows PC which I'm pretty competent on.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
    • USA, up to $1000 for Windows laptop. Might consider $1500 for MacBook.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**
    • New only
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**
    • No interest in 2-in-1, touchscreen. Wants something smaller and lighter than the Z580 with good battery life and keyboard.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**
    • Weight and thinness is important along with good battery life and performance.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**
    • Probably 13-14 inch screen
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
    • No CAD/video or photo editing is planned. No gaming either. Will use Zoom for classes until classrooms open back up then will be used for in-class notes, etc.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
    • NA
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
    • Reliable build quality with a good keyboard and good battery and good performance. No touch screen necessary. Fingerprint reader is ok. No built in optical drive necessary.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**
    • Will probably buy at either Costco or Best Buy. Planning to go shopping in a couple days.

Looking for a laptop for my inlaws

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:22 PM PST

Looking for a good reliable comfortable laptop for my wife's parents (they are separated and both need a new laptop). I'm looking to get them something reliable that will last them a long time. They don't need much performance (just enough for streaming video online) so build quality and reliability is the most important factor. Back when I was up to date on the current laptop market I would have suggested an acer however idk what the state of the market is these days.

So far I'm considering this for them: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R5RE/dp/B07Z1165XY/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1604284285&refinements=p_89%3AASUS%7CAcer%7CHP%2Cp_36%3A40000-75000&rnid=2421885011&s=pc&sr=1-8&th=1

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$400-$700
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?build quality, form factor, battery life, performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?pretty important. It's under build quality but it's for my in laws and they aren't going to be doing any gaming or programming on it. It just has to be able to stream video smoothly.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.pretty indifferent, not too small though, both of them are getting older though so they just need a big enough screen size to see. 15'' might be about right.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Nope, none of that. Just netflix, hulu, etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?NA
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?reliable build quality.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I'll need to get two laptops one is for a teacher so his budget is limited probably something ~$500 USD. The other is for someone who has a bit more money but does not require a lot of of a computer so I was looking for something $500-$750 for her.
