Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:17 AM PDT Has anyone heard of sulin os I saw it on the list of supported distros on flatpack. Is this distro any good? This seems perfect for me but I couldn't find anything on it. [link] [comments] |

Or what should I use? Specs: CPU: Intel celeron 2.16HG RAM: 2GB I'm not sure what's the other specs :P [link] [comments] |
What are some softwares available for Linux Debian 10 Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:48 PM PDT Some of the software I find for Linux aren't usually available to be installed for Debian, so I'm wondering how I can find what are available. I tried to install launchers such as gnome pie but they are having trouble starting. [link] [comments] |
Formatting external hard drive for both linux and windows? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:09 PM PDT I want to use an external hard drive preferably compatible with windows and linux, mainly linux. I have heard NTFS works fine on both and was using it ever since, but recently it got corrupted. Does using NTFS formatted hard drive on both linux and windows interchangeably corrupts it? Is there no other alternative? If so I would like to use a linux file system like ext4 because data is more important than covenience. [link] [comments] |

Which distro to install on an old HP laptop? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:39 AM PDT Hi, due to the situation around COVID school will be online for at least a month in my country. Due to lack of computers at home, I took out and old HP 250 G3 laptop from the basement I thought was long gone. It runs Windows 10, but it is slow and bloated. The purpose of the usage is light school work for children aged 7 - 10 (needed for running Microsoft Teams/Zoom and LibreOffice along standard web surfing). So I dove into Linux as an alternative and so far I've gathered some information about following systems that might be suitable for my laptops hardware (4 GB of working memory, a 500 GB hard drive and an Intel Celeron N2830 2.16ghz): * Lubuntu * Linux Lite * Linux Mint Which one of these three distros do you think is the most suitable one? Or would you recommend something else? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:21 AM PDT I think it is a very basic question. But In Linux videos they often say. It's based on Ubuntu or Debian. But I thought Linux is just the Terminal. I am majorly confused :) [link] [comments] |
How to download a google sheet everyday with crontab? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 01:48 PM PDT I want to download this every day to a folder on my computer. How do I do this? I wrote a python script for the download. However, I am not sure how to automate it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2020 01:17 PM PDT I'm using windows 10 and cygwin (I know windows 10 has linux system which is awesome! but I'm still getting my machine setup.) So I right click the desktop icon for Cygwin and click "Properties," There's a field called "Target" that is what gets executed when you run the program. My contains the following: What's weird is if I remove the hyphen at the end basic commands like "ls" and "pwd" no longer work. I just wanna know why? Furthermore, when the shell is started there is a Hyphen in the title "-bash." I'm just really curious as to why this is. Something is getting messed up somewhere [link] [comments] |

Guide for setting up Debian to be able to play games? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:47 PM PDT Recently I'm trying to get back into playing games but the performance on Debian 10 is beyond awful, not only do most proton games that worked when I had Ubuntu not work but even for games the DO work you'd think I was playing with integrated graphics with the single digit frame rates. So anyways I'm assuming I'm missing some steps that weren't necessary on Ubuntu (which was basically just install steam and enable proton). I can't seem to find a guide for how to do this on a stock out of the box install OS: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster) x86_64 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6- (12) @ 4.200GHz GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 470/480 Memory: 5835MiB / 16052MiB Edit: Drivers may be the issue but as far as I know those are supposed to be baked into the linux kernal so I'm not really sure if I want to mess with drivers when I have no idea what I'm doing Edit 2: I followed this guide and am still not able to play games: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-steam-with-steam-play-on-debian-10-buster Edit 3: got it to work after a few restarts going to check compatibility with games I played on ubuntu and figure it out further [link] [comments] |
Wireless adapter (RTL8821CU-CG) installed and detected but not working (Linux Mint 19.3) Posted: 31 Oct 2020 08:35 AM PDT My wireless adapter arrived today and I'm stuck. Wireless adapter is on RTL8821CU-CG, dual-band, and has bluetooth. (Here's its product page and its driver page if it helps.) I followed this advice: It was all good except that the wireless adapter didn't turn on (it has a green light indicator), so I rebooted. After reboot, bluetooth turned on and worked. But I can't see any signs of it being able to connect to WiFi. I went to https://github.com/brektrou/rtl8821CU to consult.

Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:04 AM PDT Yeah, you can guess, I have to make one of "those" posts. GalliumOS 2.1 on an Acer C720. Kernel 4.8.17-galliumos. Yes, it's a systemd system. Yes, I've checked the logs. Nothing except "Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused." Yes, reboot, restart. I'm starting to think either rebuild a la Arch/Gentoo. And, yes, I know my kernel is out of date as is my distro, but I like to know the reasons for this behavior. CentOS8 on another box is how I'm circumventing the problem, SPL2. [link] [comments] |

Is there any way to install Linux on Android Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:14 PM PDT So i've been trying to install Linux on Android for a few days now, but all I can find are ways to emulate the distros, is there a way to totally replace the Android OS with a linux distro? And if so, does anyone know of a guide on how to do it? [link] [comments] |
Why is it important to have a strong password? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:52 AM PDT So my question is really, why is it important to have a strong admin password for a server-type computer that only uses ssh keys and doesn't allow password login? Aside from the obvious physical access, what other ways could someone get into my system? Nothing is exposed to the internet other than my vpn and plex (both in docker). I don't mean setting my password to "password", but rather, is it okay in this situation to use "simplepassword1" as opposed to "PaSsWoRd5#"? Why not? [link] [comments] |

Eeeek..need to have specific distribution and hardware to connect a second monitor through usb? Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:23 AM PDT I am in a situation where my laptop is much more modern and powerful then my 10 year old desktop. Also for convinces sake using one device is easier then multiple. Thus id like to connect my two home monitors to my laptop. Sadly I only have a single hdmi port. There are many adaptors that work to power a second monitor though usb and on windows theses are just plug and play...but apparently that is not the case on Linux sadly... iv tried and returned many different adaptors from my local store and from what gathered, for this to work I need to use a "Ubuntu" based distribution and the usb to hdmi converter has to use the "display link" driver correct? I'm using kubuntu so the first part is fine...but since Ubuntu is based off Debian, shouldn't Debian based distors be compatible aswell? Or if your using straight Debian or mxlinux ext are you just out of luck or is there another method?? Secondly, because apparently only converters with "displaylink" drivers will work I searched around and ordered this one from Amazon StarTech.com USB 3.0 to HDMI External Video Card Adapter - DisplayLink Certified - 1920x1200 - MultiMonitor Graphics Adapter - Supports Mac & Windows (USB32HDPRO) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O6G5ZGI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_D1zNFbDG263M6 Which supposedly is displaylink certified and some comments saying they got it working on Ubuntu, does anyone have alternative converters they could suggest?
