Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Absolute max 1000, would prefer to be more in the 700-800 range.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Dont know much about them/not too sure

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Not too picky here

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thin laptops look slick to me, but not a deal breaker.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

My current is 15.6 and im really happy with that size.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming and web browsing mostly. If i game it's generally really old games like age of empires 2. Or emulations like playstation 1. Most intensive thing is probably multi clienting a game and netflix very occasionally.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Usually just use normal settings, the games I play are often at least 10 years old. Hearthstone is maybe the newest one.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No need for touch screen, just the basics. Having a numpad is important to me.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Not looking for anything too fancy, just something to get the job done. Quiet laptops are a plus. But budget is important to me. Lower the better unless it's a perfect fit. Thank you!

Getting a New Laptop for Grad School (Coding + Moderate Gaming) (1500 USD | US)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:01 PM PDT

    Hey, everyone.

I am looking to get a new laptop for school.

I need a laptop to be portable and good for coding / large data sets manipulation.

I also like to game in my spare time.

I have found ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 to be sort of perfect for my needs but wanted to hear your opinion if that is a good device, or if there is something better.

More specifically I have been considering this model.

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-g14-14-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-9-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-max-q-1tb-ssd-moonlight-white/6403816.p?skuId=6403816

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1500 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality + portability + performance > everything else
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I will be carrying this laptop every day, so it is fairly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14 inch or less would be perfect
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Coding: Visual Studio, Gaming: I would want to run any game at least 60fps (graphics quality does not matter that much)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I cannot stand laptops with cringy gaming designs, would want something rather simple. Also, I will be connecting this laptop to the external monitor while using it at home.

Under $600 for fast web browsing

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Up to $600 but cheaper is desirable

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Primarily performance, all other factors are secondary

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Bigger than 14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    No

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop will be for an older relative who wants their web browsing and email checking to be unhindered by slow hardware. I'm comfortable with working on the internals and if I can get a better deal by getting something with a HDD and low ram and upgrading it myself, then awesome. Thank you for your time!

Work convertible with bright screen that can handle light gaming

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 04:23 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~20 000 Danish krone (~2.500 €)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 is a requirement, build quality is important, battery life should hit 8h of light usage
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
2 kg is my soft limit, lighter is better
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14 -- 15.6 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
light gaming, mmorpg's such as Elder Scrolls Online
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Elder Scrolls Online at medium/high at 45 FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Keyboard is important (coming from a thinkpad), the display should be bright (at least 400 nits) as I use it on the go frequently
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I need at least 16GB of RAM, 32GB would be better. Thunderbolt is a requirement. I'd prefer a lighter convertible below 1.5 kg, but there don't seem to be many 14 inch models with dGPU or Tiger Lake Xe graphics. Lenovo X1 Yoga with Tiger lake would be perfect but I have to buy something this week.

Suggest me a gaming laptop that can last at its peak for 2-4 years.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:08 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop to play mildly heavy games like CSGO, BF1. And I'm not planning to use it for coding, video editing or photoshop. The most work that I would use it for is when I use Powerpoint, Excel and Office. I also have to say what I appreciate most in a laptop is if it could operate at it's peak or at least close to it for a period of 2-4 years.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      RM10000. Purchasing in Malaysia.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would prioritize these in this order - Build quailty > batter life > performance.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      24' or bigger
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No CAD or any sort of editing. Microsoft office is the main software that im using it for
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
and most mildly heavy games like bf1. Although i do spend most of my time on CSGO
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A reliable build quailty that last for 2-4 years would be what i prioritized most here.

Edit: I'm new here and i just read the sub's rules and just to add the QnA that was provided.

Looking for a photo editing laptop + office work- MUST HAVE A 4K 95%+ sRGB IPS PANEL

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:42 PM PDT

Proper form to follow. Trying to find other options than a DELL XPS 15

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
<$3800CAD ($2900 USD - I can ship from the US or Canada) This is not a hard limit, but I can buy the XPS for this price.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      NO
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Needs to deal with professional work. Previous laptop is a 6 year old MSI that had stood the test of time. Will rarely be away from power for extended periods.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15", can live with 17" or 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Excel, Outlook with 150+ draft emails (not a joke, have a technical reason for doing this - current desktop with 64gb ram has crashed from this)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I do not play video games. I would prefer to avoid the RGB LED aesthetic, but not a must have
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Must be able to hard wire to ethernet (dock is fine) - Number pad and a pen capable screen are nice but not required. Dock functionality (thunderbolt 3 or similar) would be nice. Have a strong preference for discrete graphics
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I appreciate any insight; I'm going crazy trying to navigate different manufacturers sites and then trying to price the correct model.

At the moment i noticed that the best configuration for perfomance at this price is ryzen 5 4600h and gtx 1650.I can go a bit over budget if its worth it.(I already searched acer nitro 5, hp pavillion 15, asus tuf gaming and acer aspire 7) so i need some other models i dont know about. Also all screens at this price are 15 inches so would be nice if some models had more than that.

Looking for a "get a little work done from home" workstation for Autodesk, but hoping to play a few games too.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1800

Are you open to refurbs/used? -With reliable warranty

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Autodesk Performance, Pen Input, display size, gaming ability

How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately but not high on the priority list.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"+

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Autodesk Design Manufacturing Suite Autodesk Sketchbook 3D Scanning Software

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Battlefield V at High? Fortnite at Ultra? Is this even possible with a lower spec workstation?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Pen input, 10 Key, backlit keyboard

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I own a small rapid fabrication business and at times need to be able to work from home on designs. I don't typically use assemblies that have higher than 100 parts, but I would like to be able to render ray traced scenes fairly quickly. Gaming is of some importance but it takes a back seat to reliable performance while designing in Autodesk Inventor.

    Want a good laptop!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:34 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1000 USD or less!

Are you open to refurbs/used?: No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?: Something I could carry in a bag with a couple other things and it would survive. Longish battery?

How important is weight and thinness to you?: Something easy to carry but a little weight isn't a big deal!

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: doesn't really matter as long as it's not tiny tiny. Probably at least 10 in!

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?: Office 365, Procreate (which I think you can only get on an Apple laptop)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: enough to run nicely. High quality!!

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad): I don't think so? I mean with these it usually gets expensive so they aren't needed but I'm not saying so if it's in my price range.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.: i'm just a college student who needs a laptop nothing out of this world just enough to get the job done and do it nicely. I'm also looking for a good printer if anyone has a suggestion or if that should be said for finding any laptops! ❤️❤️❤️

    need help in choosing!!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:46 PM PDT

i need some help deciding which laptop i should pick. its either the Acer Predator Helios 300 (2020) or the Dell G5 5500. both of them have the same specs: 10th gen i7, 144hz screen, a full rtx 2060, and both comes with 16gb of ram and 512gb ssd. but but the helios costs a bit more. here in my country, SEA, the dell g5 5500 is on sale for about $1,450 (everything is overpriced here ffs). and the helios is at retail price at the same store for $1550. is the hundred bucks more worth the turbo mode, better color accuracy, and better cooling for the helios?

Refurbish Dell Latitude for basic music production

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:36 PM PDT

    Hi there!

I know there's a procedure for this sub, but my question is kinda precise. The company I'm working for is selling their old computer fleet and are giving the profit to charity

I'm looking for a laptop to do basic music recording and editing, some SolidWorks and web browsing. Maybe even some very very light gaming if it's possible. For the same price, I have the choice between :

    • 2013 Dell Latitude E7240 (ultrabook)
    • 4th gen Intel I7 4600U@2.10GHz to 3,30GHz turbo
    • Dual core
    • 16Gb memory
    • 4mb L3 cache
    • 256 GB ssd hard drive
    • second 256 GB SSD hard drive (internal second SATA port)
    • Windows 10 64Bit
    • 12.5 inch screen

    and

    • 2014 Dell Latitude E6440 (notebook)
    • 4th gen Intel I5 4310M@2.70GHz to 3,40GHz turbo
    • Dual core
    • 16Gb memory

    • 256 GB ssd hard drive
    • second 256 GB SSD hard drive (internal second SATA port)

Laptop for a engineering student! Matlab, simulations, CAD... (<750$)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:44 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Although I'm Spanish I'll probably buy it in a global/American website, so I'll write the budget in dollars. Hope the mods don't mind.

    Budget is 750$ tops.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

No, unless it's an extremely good deal.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I mostly care about performance, then battery life and finally build quality. I don't care about form factor at all.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be using it for college, so mostly simulation software, Matlab, GNU Radio, maybe SDR Radio, CAD and solidworks...

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not interested in gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nope.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Only wanted to thank those who read through the whole thing to try and help out!

Looking for a solid productivity/light gaming laptop under $1000

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

USD $1000. I'm also considering that some over this number may fit this budget on Black Friday.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes, once there's a warranty

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

My number one priority is good thermals and build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not overly important, medium-thin/light works.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nope, if I need to I'd like to at least (infrequently) play games on minimum settings at 60 FPS.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Occasionally Smite or Minecraft.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Again, thermals are the most important consideration. A mechanical keyboard would be nice as well but not deal-breaking. I would like it to look a bit understated as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

On preliminary research, I found a few that I like: 1) The Tracer III EVO: On paper this seems to be everything I want. Thin, and understated, good performance, solid chassis, under $1000 and even a mechanical keyboard. It is a gaming laptop though and I'm worried about thermals and the fact that I don't see many reviews on it.

    2) The Lenovo Legion 5: Looks gorgeous, seems to have good performance, is under $1000 and is heavily reviewed. I am also concerned about thermals here too though as it is a gaming laptop.

    3) Other assorted ones like the ASUS Zenbook (a bit expensive) and the Lenovo Thinkpads (seem amazing but I just don't like how they look other than maybe the T495).

Would appreciate if anyone can give input on the ones I chose based on my criteria, or any I may have missed.

<2150 NZD, NEW ZEALAND, UNIVERSITY/PROGRAMMING LAPTOP

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:58 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $2200 NZD would be the max I am looking to spend, but am willing to import from other countries too.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Refurb yes, used no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

build quality, performance, ultrabook, battery life

It needs to be light enough to carry around every day <1.8kg, have decent to great performance and good battery life without falling apart within the year.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Relatively important - I'll be carrying it around a lot.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15'6 is probably best as a bigger screen is better, but 14' would probably be fine too.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Probably not, I have a gaming PC at home. It would be nice to have a dedicated GPU though, just in case I decide I need to.

Visual Studio and IntelliJ for programming, and just stuff like Firefox etc

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and nice screen are both pretty important, as I'll be typing on it a lot and looking at the screen.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at both the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (R7 4800U) and the ASUS Zenbook UX534FTC-AS77 (both around that $2100NZD price point) as options, but wanted an opinion on other options. I know I like the both of their keyboards, and also know I like most lenovo keyboards.
