Surprised my son with a new PC! We built it together and here is the result. What should we improve? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:45 PM PDT I posted about a month ago that I wanted to surprise my son with a new PC. Happy to tell you that it's done! Now, I noticed that I made a mistake while buying the RAM and I got a 1x16GB stick instead of 2x8GB. Unfortunately I couldn't return that, but I already ordered another 1x16GB to get the improvement of using dual channel. Our main concern comes with the temperatures. The CPU averages 75-85°C depending on the game he's playing. The GPU averages around 83°C (he mostly plays Warzone). I was wondering if I should get him a Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU Cooler to improve those temperatures, and I also wanted to know if it would be recommended to add an additional 3 top fans. He has the PC under his desk as he has no space on top. Also I see that I was very lucky for managing to get that 3080. I used to check every night when I got home and one day the add to cart button was there and I got it. Really happy about that since all the other components were hiding in my closet for a couple of weeks waiting for the graphics card. Any support is greatly appreciated! Thank you very much in advance! [link] [comments] |
Finished building my first ever PC Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:59 PM PDT After months and months of waiting, research, endless YouTube videos and endless tabs in safari, I've finally built my first ever PC and I'd like to give a massive thanks to this subreddit. I initially joined Reddit not that long ago to help me build this PC and the support from you guys was brilliant. I had people give some excellent recommendations and others (a very small minority) who were just d!cks and tried to screw me over (but you guys all downvoted them anyway). But overall the support, help and constant stream of advice was overwhelming and truly unexpected. Today I finished off this beast of a PC that I've been saving for for ages and I cannot wait to get it started. Buying the parts was like heaven, and watching them arrive and inspecting them felt amazing. But then I had to build it... And it was pure hell. My dad surprised me most. He's like the ultra alpha of the family and to even get his permission to build a pc amazed me. And then he even built it with me. But I'd made a massive mistake to let him do that... Knowing where to start was hard. Eventually we got the motherboard out and put everything except the GPU on it. It was fairly straightforward, except the processor where I felt like I was doing a brain surgery with that tiny little thing and all those pins that weren't allowed to be bent. But by gods help I managed to get through it and I was feeling good. But I had barely even done anything. And I'd already spent two hours just putting in the CPU, SSD, RAM and screwing the motherboard in. I then decided to whack in the GPU. And it was pure hell... Fire, thunder and lightning came out between me and my dad. We spent over an hour figuring what the hell we were doing. It wasn't going in, I thought it went in like that and he thought it went in like this. I thought I'd broken it tbh. Tensions were heating until we realised our massive mistake. I'd left the cover on the 2070 super where it went into the motherboard. After that it clicked in just as it should've an hour ago. I thought I'd just gone through both world wars with my dad. Anyway... we moved on. Power supply went in nice and easy but the cables, Oh the mothertrucking CABLES. What do I even do with all these wires and pins and sh!t. I was lost beyond belief. All these YouTube videos just completely strolled through all the wires like they're nothing but me, a complete and utter imbecile had absolutely no clue where what goes where. I still don't know whether I've done it all right. But finally, after 6 gruesome hours of putting this PC together I had it finally behind the tampered glass that I'm yet to peel the plastic from. And I couldn't be happier. It looks great. It feels great. I feel like a tech guru suddenly. And tbh I'm yet to know whether it works. I'll link my pc parts list in the comments as well as some of the photos (once I've sorted it all out and got some decent pictures) Anyway one final thanks to this amazing subreddit who helped me through the struggle. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now without you guys so thank you. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Oct 2020 03:01 PM PDT Okay, so I'm pretty happy with my 𝙎𝙏𝙀𝘼𝙇𝙏𝙃 build, but I do love criticism. What would you guys change? Need help with a mini build for my mom. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:27 AM PDT So my mother just got a new job in teaching. In a world where she needs to do a lot of zoom calls and be on the computer alot more she wants a desktop. Of course because i built a pc for gaming and streaming while I've been home she wants me to build her one and not get a prebuilt. I'm fine with doing this for her but like alot of parents because i built a gaming pc she thinks I'm a computer genius. Now I'm also not a complete noob i know where to begin, know what i want, and put a parts list together which is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/syMPmg The problem i have is I've never done a mini build. I've never done a build without a graphics card. I've never updated bios. I don't have an older cpu to upgrade bios with. This isn't for gaming, its for home office use. Is this a good list? a bad list? Am i gonna run into trouble needing to upgrade bios? I just need some input on if im going in the right direction on this. [link] [comments] |
Should I wait until Black Friday / Cyber Monday to buy parts or should I just buy now? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:35 PM PDT I've been putting off my PC for a while but I really want to move forward with it soon. Will it be worth waiting for sales this year? Has COVID thown anything off? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:14 PM PDT I'm thinking about budget build for myself. I just wanted to ask would Ryzen 5 1500x be a bottleneck with RTX 2060? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2020 02:42 PM PDT I'm planning a new build to be finished after the wave of new stuff is released from Nvidia, AMD, etc., likely early 2021. I'm looking for a case right now though because my current case is boring and too small. I'll shift the new parts into the new case once I get there, but for now I want a case that could fit a better video card (if I take advantage of EVGA's step-up program) and has COLORS other than just black. I've been looking at cases on and off for the past few weeks and found some I like:
I like how the Lian Li looks super easy to work on, but I'd prefer a front side where you can clearly see the fans. I really like the look of the MB520 but heard it has some potential quirks when it comes to unfiltered air getting in. The TD500 looks cool too but the fractal effects on the side panel kinda weird me out. What I'm looking for is advice, especially from anyone who has one of these cases and can speak to things like how easy it is to work inside them, how good and clean the airflow is, and so on. The only major requirements I haven't mentioned so far are ATX compatible size, needs to allow for the occasional mounting of a 3.5" drive, should be reasonably quiet, and should allow for a bunch of big beautiful ARGB fans. Bonus points for cases that have an easier or more modern approach to hooking up the power/reset pins into the board because I'm tired of 15+ years of struggling to place tiny plastic wire ends onto the right pins without a pair of tweezers. Aiming for about $100 USD or less. Suggestions for other brands and models are welcome, as well as suggestions for any cool new features I should look for. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT So. I've had g933 headsets, g903 mice, and a powerplay matt for about 3 years now. Why the plural you ask? Well the first headset's power switch broke about a year in and now the warrantied replacement did the exact same thing, though this time I just opened it up and bent the pins on the back of it so it's always on, because fuck dealing with logitech support. The original mouse also broke like a year after I got it, it developed double clicking problems. The warrantied one, again a bit over a year later, has also started showing signs of double clicking. But what really pissed me off and drove me to make this post, is the "free scrolling switch" randomly breaking on me this morning. Not only does logitech shit feel like it's made with 10-20$ of parts MAX, but so far every peripheral of theirs that I've owned has lasted me no more then two years, which is absolutely insane considering how much they charge! To put this in perspective, I've had a DAS keyboard for 5 years now and before that I had one of those old-ass laser Microsoft mice for like 6-7! Neither the keyboard now nor the mouse back then had any issues! Bottom line: Have any of you had this many issues with logitech, or am I just really unlucky? Would any of you recommend better quality mice/headphones/headsets? I just want to buy something that I wont have to worry about replacing for like 5 years at least. [link] [comments] |

AIO GPU water cooling pump died, need recommendations for aftermarket cooler? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 06:31 AM PDT Hii guys please let me know if I'm in the wrong place :) I have a GTX 1080Ti Seahawk (https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/geforce-gtx-1080-ti-sea-hawk.html) which the water-cooling pump has just does on me. 100+ degrees while starting game, throttling and max speed on the vrm fan. So at this point I either need a replacement aoi if that's possible? Or if not I need to buy an after market cooler which I think would work as this card has the reference PCB not a custom one. I've been looking at the RAIJINTEK MORPHEUS II. (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-morpheus-ii-core-black-heatpipe-vga-cooler-hs-028-rt.html) Does anyone have experience with how this performs in GPU, vrms and memory and such? If not does anyone have a recommendation for one that still looks nice Vs the artic accelero 3. Thanks people 😊 [link] [comments] |

Putting cpu cooler back after already spread thermal paste Posted: 03 Oct 2020 06:40 AM PDT Hello, I just built my PC and I am concerned about the efficiency of the thermal paste. Basically, when I was screwing in the CPU cooler, I noticed that one of the screws was not getting screwed properly (the screw's thread didn't get in right). So I had to unscrew the cooler and it detached from the CPU. Now I placed the cooler back and screwed everything properly. I am wondering, is there any problem that the thermal paste got spread and then I removed the cooler and placed it back? Will there be any air bubbles or not proper spreading? Do you think it is important to removed the cooler, clean the thermal paste and put it again? Thermals so far seem normal, but I haven't benchmarked it or done anything extremely demanding. I RMA'd my MOBO, built up the rig again with a new one only for it to literally explode on startup Posted: 03 Oct 2020 04:45 AM PDT Parts: Corsair rx750 TUF X570 Ryzen 3600 (with Noctua NH-U12S) ROG STRIX OC 2070 HyperX Fury 3200mHz cl16 (2x8GB) Samsung 970+860 So, my MOBO died for seemingly no reason and I just today received the replacement. Built up the machine again and when pressing the power button for the first time it made a POP-sound, a bright flash and puffed a cloud of smoke. Nice. It did not shut down nor is there any problem visible to me, so I decided to try and get it to boot. Now I faced the old classic "No Signal" problem. I've reinstalled the GPU, tried with various RAM setups, reinstalled and pasted the CPU while cleaning all paste residue from the pins, and tried every single port there is on my GPU and MOBO. Any ideas what the hell I'm supposed to try next? As far as I can tell everything works fine, but I can't be certain without getting to the BIOS. EDIT: I think I'll send the whole machine for diagnostics. Probably the easiest even if not necessarily the cheapest way. I don't trust that I can figure it out myself. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:58 AM PDT I am in the process of building 3 computers for myself and two friends, and while I have most of the components chosen, I am having a hard time deciding which motherboard to go with. I've read/watched numerous reviews but still can't decide. Please let me know what your opinions of these or any possible alternatives. Here is a list of what I intend on using for components, with a list of the motherboards I'm considering with my list of pro and con for each. Planned System CPU: 5800x (would have gone 3700x this year, but I'm waiting for zen 3 now) GPU: 3080 or big Navi, we'll see when AMD launches, but if them their closest gpu Case: Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh performance PSU: Seasonic focus 850 SSD: SK Hynix P31 1TB CPU Cooler: Sythe Fuma 2/Noctua NHD-15 (final decision depends on the CPU, AIOs give me the hebejebes) RAM: 32gb Ripjaws V 3600 cas 16 Mobo contenders Gigabyte b550 Aorus Pro Pros: Solid VRM, Good IO, 2,5GB lan, good bios, bios flashback, wifi version $10 extra (probably willing to get this for the price, but I'll most likely be wired) Cons: No front USB-C header (I honestly don't have anything that needs this, though there may be things in the life of the computer where I'd want it, and with a $12 cable the case can utilize it) ASRock b550 Extreme 4 Pros: Solid VRM, 2.5GB Lan, Good IO, Post Code LED, Power/Reset switch, front USB-C header Cons: I've read a number of complains about ram speeds as their QVL list is pretty sparse, does this have bios flashback? I can't find anything on it, how does the Wifi work, do you need wifi m.2 card and if so how is the antenna wired? MSI b550 Tomahawk Pros: Solid VRM, 2.5GB LAN, lower price than others listed, front USB-C header Cons: Worse IO (what is with 1GB and 2.5GB lan? fewer USB ports), no wifi option (though as stated earlier, probably not needed) Asus b550 ROG STRIX-F Pros: Solid VRM, 2.5 GB Lan, good IO, bios flashback Cons: highest price (especially for Wifi), no front USB-C Thanks for making it this far, your help is greatly appreciated.
