Is it worth to wait for Black Friday deals?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 09:24 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I am looking to buy a laptop. I want a high end laptop (RTX 2070S, 16GB ram, i7 10750 - something like this)

Should I wait for Black Friday for a deal? How good are these deals usually?

    Thanks for the help!

Acer aspire 5 vs Acer swift 3

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:47 PM PDT

So I ended up changing what I was deciding between after looking more into these two. I'm not entirely sure which is better? Aspire AMD RYZEN 7 4700U 8 core 8GB RAM 512 GB NVMe SSD 15.6" FHD Swift 3 AMD RYZEN 7 4700U 8 core 8GB RAM 512GB NVMe SSD 14" FHD IPS

I heard some saying the aspire is much better than the swift and that the swift has awful screen quality and I need to place the order soon tonight and now I'm not sure which to get. Or if there might be a better option for $700

I'm mainly using it for ps2 emulation, rpg maker MV and MZ and Android emulation and some video and photo editing as well as school work if I decide to go back to school. Not really planning on playing any graphically intense games like the newest doom or ff7 remake when it comes out on pc etc I don't really care about being portable so being bulky is fine I just care about having good build quality to last and not having overheating issues.

    Upgrading from Chromebook 3120 (AUS)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 10:10 PM PDT

Hello! I've been using a Dell Chromebook 11 (3120) as my non-gaming/study/out-of-the-house laptop for quite a few years now, but the low ram and screen size is getting quite frustrating. I have a gaming PC at home but finding good specs for this is a bit tricky when I don't have game system requirements to compare to! My main concerns are battery life and ram so it can handle lots of tabs without much issue,, which my Chromebook is starting to struggle with now.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $700 AUD maximum, Australia
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes (if source is Australian)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Battery life, performance, build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Quite important!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
12" as the absolute minimum, preferably in the range of 13-15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Possibly occasional light gaming (things like Terraria/Caves of Qud/DCSS)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't intend to do any intensive gaming with this laptop! If it can meet Terraria's minimum requirements that's fine as a benchmark haha
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard and decent build quality please! An inbuilt webcam would be nice for online classes too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been trying to look at newer Chromebooks but its been hard to find equivalent Windows laptops to compare specs/prices to! I'm very used to the Chromebook fast start-up but I could learn to live without it haha

Hi, I'm looking around to find a laptop under $1000 (preferably in the 600-700 range, if possible) that will be able to run Photoshop and LR. I've seen some articles suggesting older model MacBooks, and Acer Aspires and Zenbooks, but I don't know enough about laptops to know for sure. Thanks!

UK 15' ~1200GBP budget alternatives to the HP Envy x360

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 04:04 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1200GBP

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    2-in-1's that have some oomph

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important since I'll be taking it with me to university

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15'

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't have very high requirements, I might use the device for light gaming on less demanding games or a little bit of Python programming/MATLAB simulations. I mostly want to be able to take notes using the device.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

League of Legends, highest settings with at least 60fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is very important to me

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So when I was doing my research on my own, I stumbled upon the 15.6' Ryzen 7 HP envy x360 and that ticked all the boxes, except for the fact that its completely out of stock no matter which store I checked. I'm essentially looking for alternatives to it, or if you guys had any ideas on which stores still have them in stock (I checked Amazon, John Lewis, Argos, HP store directly and had no dice). I could possibly order it via Newegg but I'd need the device by the 9th of October so I wasn't sure if it'd arrive on time given it ships from the US. Thanks for the help in advance! :)

German student looking for a laptop under 1000€!

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:14 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Under 800€, maximum of 1000€ but only of it's a very good price-performance-ratio

    *

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes!

    *

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

From most to least important: Performance > build quality > battery life / form factor

    *

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It should be portable, that's why I want a laptop, but portability isn't that important to me. Preferably under 7 pounds / 3kg.

    *

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15", 17" is fine too

    *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming; mostly The Sims 4 and Sea of Thieves Microsoft Office for uni/work

    *

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

At least middle settings, the more the better. But not the lowest please.

    *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Windows 10 Should have multiple USB sockets and Bluetooth. If possible a DVD drive but that's not very important to me. Graphic card should be good for the price. It would make me happy to have a rainbow light up keyboard but again, that's not very important, functionality is the key!

    *

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    N/A

I really hope you can help me!

Is buying a gaming laptop, but not using it for gaming a good idea?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:01 AM PDT

Hello, I live in the Philippines, where laptops typically have insane prices (like 15% more expensive than US models). My budget is 40000 php (thats around 820usd), and my biggest requirements for a new laptop are:

    • Great Specs-Price ratio
    • Something that will last for a very long time, mechanically. Hopefully would last for 8 years, like the 2011 Lenovo ideaPad that I am still using in 2020
    • Upgradeable
    • Preferably with the Ryzen 4000 series chips

I found out that all the consumer-grade laptops with the 4500u at around 35-38k php like the Swift 3, Vivobook 14, and ideaPad slim 3, all have soldered 8gb memory, which is a dealbreaker for me (except the ideapad, it has one extra sodimm).

Now enter the 42k price point - the Acer nitro 5. Although it has very low 4gb ram (not a problem, I can do upgrades myself) and a previous gen ryzen 5 3550h, it has a dedicated gtx 1650, 120hz display, an extra m2, a sata drive, and 2 sodimm slots which goes all the way to 32gb.

My use case would be mostly web browsing, programming java, and doing web development. There will be some occasional light-medium gaming - previous gen titles like gta v and metal gear solid. I don't intend on cranking game's graphical settings to the max, as I would want to minimize wear and tear. I don't intend to play the newest AAA titles either.

Considering the gaming laptop's 2 sodimm slots, m2 slot, sata drive and superior cooling, I objectively think that they are more futureproof and would fare and last longer than the consumer-grade vivobooks, ideapads etc. The only con that I see is the lack of the ryzen 4000 series, which can be found in the newer variants (around 50k).

I haven't experienced owning one of these budget gaming laptops before, so I don't know if I'm betting too much on the "it will last a long time" line, so if anybody can convince me that they won't, please do. Also, if anyone can recommend a laptop with the Ryzen 4000 series and non-soldered RAM, I'd look into it as well.

tldr: I want a laptop with upgradeable components, as I intend on using it for a very long time. Most consumer models sadly come with soldered ram, but gaming laptops do not.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**42000php (that's around $850 usd), I'm not in a hurry, so I can wait until the Christmas holidays discounts
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**No. Secondhand laptop prices are gouged right now due to the virus, WFH and online classes
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**As long as I can get around 5 hours in a light web browsing session, I'm good
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Not important at all
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**14-15
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**I'm only interested in previous gen games like gta v, phantom pain etc.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**I just want something that will last 5 or more years

Need a heavy duty gaming laptop that can handle high fps at high settings. $3000 before Tax budget.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 01:59 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:.

My budget is $3000 give or take. I'll be buying this laptop In the United States, Texas if it helps.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    New only please.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Looking for a nice and sturdy build so thickness is no issue. The fans being loud is not the worst as long as it keeps the laptop cool. The laptop will probably be plugged in most of the time but a decent battery is appreciated.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Will be on a desk most of the time, so not really a priority

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some light video editing with premier and after effects so cpu and ram is a bit more on the important side. 32 gigs of RAM would be nice but 16 is not a deal breaker. I'm looking to play games like Borderlands 3, Modded Skyrim, Arma 3, and a couple other triple A studio games.

    • *If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

60fps is my standard but 120 would be nice. I'm hoping to be able to play games like Modded Minecraft, Borderlands 3, Hitman 2, Dmc 5, Resident evil 2, and other games at high.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good build quality would be great, optical drive would be nice but I can do without.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've looked at the MSI GE66 Raider with an i9-10980HK and a rtx 2080 super and it seems really nice. I just wanted to check with yall and see if I could get any suggestions. Thank y'all kindly 🤠

    Are you open for refurbs/used?No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Preferably 2-in-1. Decent battery life for word etc.

How important is weight and thinness to you?Relatively unimportant

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.13"-14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Mostly Word, Powerpoint etc. on the go. For everything else i will most of the time use my PC at home.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Touch screen would be pretty nice, Fingerprint too, I really want to be able to charge the laptop with USB-C. Is the Asus Tuf right for me? Or Acer or MSI???

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:58 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Under $1,500 is ideal.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I suppose if it was a great deal.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality is high priority for me. I'm coming from a Macbook Pro from 2015, and I like the feel of how dense it is, but time to go back to PC.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important, but thinness isn't as much. I will take it on a short bike commute daily.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I think 15.6 or under is good. 17in seems WAY too big. and my Macbook is 13in which is also fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Sometimes a bit of video editing, but nothing crazy.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to play higher end games, but I also don't really care about Ultra-high settings. And mostly I play pretty low end games like Rimworld; but don't want to limit myself if I want to pop on a Battlefield or GTA or Cyberpunk in the future.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don't need any bells and whistles. Just a long-lasting, durable, high quality computer that plays high graphics games on medium settings.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I LOVE the look of the Razer Blade & Acer Predator, but they seem a higher price point than necessary? The Asus Tuf seems nice because of the durability and great price, but will it play the games I want? Or is there a better option?

Work laptop under £1000, preferably much cheaper, UK

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:51 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£1000, but preferably much cheaper since it is just a work laptop, UK
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor is almost very important thing since I'm using it for work, and I need to see the screen well. We have weird charts and figures to look at. The screen needs to be clear, and I need to be able to invert colors on the screen quickly (with keys) to darken screens when using a program like Word. So maybe 14 inches? 15.6 inches? Something like that. More important is that I need it to be fast using things like Microsoft Word, TexMaker (I work a lot with LaTeX to make pdfs), adobe acrobat, sorting through photos (from the lab) and quick, large file transfers from external usb drives. This is only for work (I work in a science lab). I had a work laptop a few years ago from the government, and it was very slow and frustrating. Literally wanted to die. Battery life is utterly unimportant. Look of the thing is unimportant. Build quality is important insofar as it should be fast for what I'm doing and last a few years.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
This will just be used for: Microsoft Word, TexMaker (I work a lot with LaTeX to make pdfs), adobe acrobat, sorting through photos (from the lab) and quick, large file transfers from external usb drives. I won't even be checking email. There is no editing of photos. I just to bring up the file, stare at the tiny details (a lot of tiny details to pay attention to on microscope slides), and organize which folder it goes into and which external drive. That's all. So, none of that editing or gaming stuff.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not applicable
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It just needs to be reliable and fast for that work stuff I described. I get all programs for free from the university. It needs to be reliable and well-built for that purpose and last a few years. I might use an external keyboard and mouse, since I'll be doing a lot of typing. I will be plugging in different external drives. So, I need a couple of USB ports, preferably 3.0, and 2.0 compatible.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'll spend a bit of money if I have to, but I was told that I wouldn't have to for my purposes. I don't know, I'm not the expert here. I won't be storing much information on the laptop itself, everything goes into externals. So the internal SSD can be small. I especially cannot stand slow file transfers, programs that run slowly or freeze up, etc. Thank you!

    Questions about laptops and recommendations

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 09:38 PM PDT

    Hey y'all,

I'm looking to buy a laptop and I've been super overwhelmed with all the options and I just want to get some questions answered I'm a business student, so I need to run Excel quite extensively, so MacBooks aren't on my radar (< if this matters)

    1. Is 8 GB RAM good? It's the bare minimum from what I've read and I don't know if 8GB will be enough since I'm running Excel and everything almost daily

    2. Should I worry about storage? I'm test running a Lenovo laptop right now (Thinkpad X1 Carbon, 7th generation) and it has 256 GB SSD. For a college student, would that be enough? Should I look for a laptop with more space?

    3. The Lenovo laptop right now is good, great even, but I've been using it for about 2 days and the laptop's fan turned on. I'm pretty sure it was because I was installing all those windows updates, but I'm kind of worried. My last laptop's fan would turn on when I first got it (and had a 45 minutes battery life, but I digress) and I ignored it (huge mistake). So should I be concerned about the fan running or should I wait it out?

I'm a college student, with about 2-3 years left so I really need a laptop that can last. My old one barely lasted 3 years and it was borderline torture to use (HP laptop if it matters)

    Any recommendations/tips/advice?

I really need a good keyboard. I love my Macbook's keyboard. I type a lot. Should be good build. No touch screen.

I have been using my Macbook Air for 4.5 years now. Sadly the battery needs replacement so I am planning to get a new one for myself. I would buy the same laptop again but it's not available anymore.

    Laptop under $1600, USA

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 12:01 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1600 USD, USA (I wouldn't mind spending more on a laptop that meet my requirements)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance, battery life, build quality, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
very important, preferably under 4lb (the lighter, the better ; portability is a big factor)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13.3-15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming: Valorant, Minecraft, League of Legends
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Smooth performance on medium settings for Valorant
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Decent build quality, long battery life, and portable please. I would like the battery life to be at least 6-8 hours. An inbuilt webcam would be nice for class. I'd like at least 8-16gb of RAM. A nice screen that won't hurt my eyes and no thermal problems.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm very used to having two storage drive slots in total so preferably I want to have the same with my new laptop. However, it is not that big of a concern. I would like for it to be very durable, at least for 4+ years. I want a professional looking laptop, not one with gamer accents.

(USA)Laptop for gamer with only one hand- no budget

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

just looking for a good gaming laptop, no 2 in 1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Between 15-17 in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Gaming, specifically Minecraft

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      Minecraft with mods

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I have to be able to disable palm rejection so that I can use the keyboard and touchpad at the same time, this is the most important factor for me

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I just need a gaming laptop that allows me to use the trackpad and keyboard at the same time, my last laptop didn't have the option to disable the palm rejection so whenever I tried to use my keyboard the trackpad would lock up and I couldn't use it to look around in-game

Laptop for scientific research involving 3D modeling software.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 11:56 PM PDT

    Budget:

    $1000

    • Im not interested in any 2 in 1 laptops.

    • I'd prefer something with good battery life.

    • Thinness to not terribly important but I would prefer something that isn't extremely bulky.

    • Screen size: 15-17in

    • Regarding OS, I'm expecting to work with Windows+Linux Dual Boot.

    • I plan to download a couple of 3D modeling softwares. I need the ability to handle rendering of molecular simulation videos.

    • I don't play video games but I'm open in getting a gaming computer for better performance.

    • Reliable build quality, NO touch-screen, I would prefer a backlit keyboard. Also, ideally I want something to handle significant typing.

      • Fast and able to support my work (Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Latex on Windows).
    • Decent amount of storage.

    • No DELL.

    Thank you in advance!

Sweden but would buy from other poaces in europe

    Sweden - laptop for programming

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Preferably not more than 8 000kr, but max 12 000kr maybe a little bit more

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life in that order

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would like to be able to carry it around without getting too tired but will make do with what i can get

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15 inched

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Visual studio, unreal engine 4 (maybe other game engines), krita, steam (crusaders kings 3 and probably other games but i will uninstall the ones that i don't use at the moment), minecraft, origin (sims 4 with a lot of cc)

The list is in an order of priority so the first three ones are absolutely necessary (a program for 3d modeling like maya might probably also be something i will need space for). The rest is only something that i would like to have but will make do without. Altough i would like to at least have minecraft or the steam game(s)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Crusaders kings and minecraft mostly also sims 4. Maybe 60fps? As long as i can play without any major lagging

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I like the keyboards that light up for when it's dark. The swedish letters (åäö) would be important to have too so there's that

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      -fill here, remove dashes-
