Posted: 03 Sep 2020 04:12 PM PDT Hello, this is my first time posting here. Before I start.... I don't know if this is worth it, or if there is something better for the same price so here it goes.. I walked into Best Buy and I was seconds away from buying a Dell - G7 17.3" laptop. link to laptop on bestbuy Literally about to insert my card and I don't know something struck me and I backed out. It's a lot of money and I feel like it's great but I wanted to know that there were other laptops that needed to be given an opportunity. What I want is to be able to play games, at high quality, high FPS and at times stream/record yet still be portable. I looked into desktops and they're also great but I really need the portability factor as well as a webcam!! Mostly interested in playing GTA, COD, and maybe Fortnite. I haven't really looked into anything that much, mostly because I just saw the specs and looked convincing enough. (I know sluggish of me.) So now I am unsure of what to get for that price range. $1300-$1600 What do you think? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Sep 2020 01:29 AM PDT Hi all, what's the best everyday laptop with AMD Ryzen processor for $800 (+-50)? Mainly for internet browsing, running MS Office, and maybe some light gaming. Please suggest me something with a good screen (1080p, good viewing angles), good keyboard and track pad, and decent battery life. Thank you. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Deciding between a Lenovo ThinkPad P53s and T590 (United States/Guam, USD ~1000) Posted: 04 Sep 2020 03:19 AM PDT Hello everyone. I am looking to upgrade from a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, and I would like to have a ThinkPad this go-around. This time I would like a full-size laptop with a 15 inch display and a numpad with the keyboard. I think I have my choices narrowed down to two: the P53s and the T590. I know that the use cases of the two laptops are different. I suppose my main question is whether having a dedicated graphics processor is worth the extra money given what I want to do with the device. Currently I am teaching online through Google Meet and Zoom, basic programming (for my projects and to demonstrate for students), recording songs and videos, creating diagrams and illustrations, and would like to learn more about photo and video editing. Gaming is not important but would be a nice thing to be able to do. Would the combination of the T590 and the integrated graphics be enough to handle these tasks, or would my quality of life be much improved with the Quadro in the P53s? I'm open to getting a used or refurbished machine, and battery life is not a big priority for me as long as the machine is reliable. The Surface cost me around USD 1300 new, so I would consider that the absolute ceiling to my budget. Lastly, I am located in Guam, so anything I get would have to be procured online. Thanks in advance. P.S. If there is another laptop you would suggest other than the two I named above, I'd also like to hear about it. P.P.S. Thank you to /u/huecobros for answering my previous question about the Lenovo ThinkPad P51. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

2-in-1 Laptop: Need to Replace my Lenovo Ideapad S740 Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:20 AM PDT I currently own a Lenovo Ideapad S740 (touchscreen), bought it early January and sent it in for repair in May (overheating, excessive power drainage, screen blackout and glitches, internet connection errors, inaccessible features...). Hated my experience and the repair took way too long so Lenovo sent me a brand new replacement laptop (same version). Battery life is perfect now, I can actually work more than 2-3 hours without the battery draining completely from 100 to 0%; however, the laptop still gets very hot although it didn't used to in the beginning (I mostly use it for Netflix or regular website visits and sometimes for LOL or coding), the screen blacks out very VERY often, and a lot of my non-browser apps (Discord, Skype...) become inaccessible for a while. I am super done with all these symptoms and want to return the laptop but need suggestions for the replacement laptop. I am in Canada and am studying Software Engineering, I would most definitely prefer a 2-in-1 laptop. I really want a laptop that does not overheat too often, especially with little activity, no glitches, long battery life, at least one port, a nice keyboard, a sleek and slim style, and good sound quality, and within reasonable price range. I've been looking into the Surface Book, Lenovo Yoga, and the HP Spectre, but I have very little knowledge when it comes to laptops so I'd appreciate and love to hear you guys' suggestions! Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Linux laptop dilemma; Intel or AMD; keyboard Posted: 04 Sep 2020 01:12 AM PDT Also see questionnaire at the end I look for suggestions/advise for buying a new laptop. Currently I am using a quite old Asus with an ancient I3 processor and 4 GB of memory. One of the problems is the low res screen and tiny memory, but I like the keyboard. My main computer is a desktop with I7 (4th gen) and 24 GB of memory only running Linux. I intend to this time keep around Windows 10 somewhere 'in a corner' of the SSD as I might want to play the occasional game. So I look for a 15" laptop with 16GB memory, min 512 GB ssd and a GOOD keyboard. (I have a new Acer at the moment but don't like the keyboard; too often multiple key hits and some keys like the cursor-keys are too tiny, so the Acer is going back) The additional question is Intel or AMD and internal graphics or dedicated graphics... Suggestions for a specific model (available in The Netherlands :) ) will be welcomed LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Laptop for Gaming and University Posted: 04 Sep 2020 12:45 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. But not the lowest please. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Windows 10 Should have multiple USB sockets and Bluetooth. If possible a DVD drive but that's not very important to me. Graphic card should be good for the price. Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:36 AM PDT Hey guys, I am thinking of buying a notebook or tablet for university, mainly for note taking, using office programs and media consumption. I am studying engineering and i have a gaming laptop which can run all the programs related to my degree so i am looking for something light, smooth, possibly with a good screen and a lasting battery. I was doing research and found to items: Huawei Matebook 13 2020 AMD Samsung Galaxy Tab s7 Normally I was sceptical about using a tablet on a daily basis but Samsung DeX makes a huge difference in my opinion. The two have similar pricepoints. (Samsung gives a case with keyboard for free. ) What do you think i should do? Do you have a better recommendation? Ps. I'm not really looking into Apple because I have nothing in the Apple ecosystem and they are pretty expensive in my country 😂. Edit: I am from Turkey and my budget is around 5k Turkish Liras. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:28 PM PDT Hi I'm a student, I just got into high school and my mom decided to gift me a laptop. At the moment, I am choosing between the ASUS TUF A15 (Ryzen 5 4800H - RTX 2060) and the ASUS Zephyrus G14 (Ryzen 9 4900HS - RTX 2060 MaxQ). If I was in the US, I'd pick the G14 right away. However, in my country, those 2 laptops have a $520 (12 million Vietnam Dong) price difference. May I ask your about which one I should choose? Side note: I really want to ask the TUF A15 owners on the portability side, and is it difficult to carry around or to a cafe. Budget is not a concern, but I want to save money when possible. Lenovo Legion 5 AMD Ryzen 7 4800H + RTX 2060. Opinions please! Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:04 AM PDT Hi! My first ever reddit post. Be kind please 😅 Alright so I've been looking around for a new laptop as my Macbook Pro 13 inch (2015) has shown its age. I thought I'd go for something different this time. I'm based in Singapore (just sharing for context). I would prefer something that can last me a good 4-5 years if possible. Looking to do primarily content creation (Photoshop, Premiere Pro) and some light gaming. Wish I could list some titles but I've been out of touch with PC games and just stepping back into it. Maybe Red Dead Redemption 2? Or GTA V with mods? I am currently looking at the Legion 5 (Ryzen 7 + 2060). For this variant of the Legion 5, it comprises of:
And it costs SGD2573 (last I checked that is). Is this a good set up and worth it's price? Just sharing, I've also looked at Aftershock Vapor 15 Pro (i7-9750H + RTX 2060, SGD2643 for the specs I've selected) and Apex 15R Lite. I had concerns over longevity for the Vapor 15 pro and smaller battery in the Apex. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! As I mentioned, I'm not too knowledgable about the finer details. Hope to get some responses. Stay safe everybody! [link] [comments] |
Need a laptop I can run a second monitor, record zoom calls and edit video without lag Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:58 PM PDT Hi, I teach music and this year I will be teaching my band kids over video. I want to record them when they finish learning a song so I can edit them into a makeshift "concert" each month. I need to be able to share my screen on google meet and record the screen using software, and power a second monitor so I can see my kids and also the music I am sharing with them. I am fine buying used. Trying to stay around $1000. I have a Surface Laptop 3 which has done great but trying this setup it gets serious lag and cannot handle the workload I'm throwing at it. Thanks. Alternative to HP Envy x360 13” 2 in 1 Posted: 04 Sep 2020 12:43 AM PDT I'm looking for a replacement for my mother-in-law's current laptop. The HP Envy x360 2 in 1 is what I want to get her, but it's been sold out everywhere for months and may not be back in stock in time for Christmas. Performance isn't too important; a modern Core i3/Ryzen 3 should do fine for her needs, but more performance won't hurt. I want something with decent build quality and a metal chassis. The budget is about $700-1000 or so. It must be a 2 in 1. It must have at least one USB type A port. She would like something with good battery life; something that could last her all day is ideal. It should have a fairly small footprint and not be too heavy. Her current laptop is an older thirteen inch Asus convertible [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Sep 2020 12:19 AM PDT Hey all, Trying to make a choice here. Looking at either the MSI GL75 SFK-029 or the HP Omen CB-1080nr. Both are almost identical in specs. The omen supposedly has slightly better cooling. It also has a larger battery, g sync and 2933 MHz ram vs the MSI having 2666. it lacks a second drive but has an additional m.2 slot and I have one I can throw in it. The MSI doesn't have a second m.2 slot but comes stock with an additional hdd. On paper it leans to HP but for some reason I still feel unsure. What do you guys think? From New Zealand, looking for a school laptop Posted: 04 Sep 2020 12:11 AM PDT • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1000-2000 NZD • Are you open to refurbs/used? No • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality is somewhat important, durability is needed since I'll have it in my school backpack. Battery life just needs to be good enough to last through a day of school (5-7ish hours). I'd like to do a bit of gaming (low end games mostly), performance is somewhat important. • How important is weight and thinness to you? Want to at least fit in a backpack, light to mid weight. • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Smaller is preferred, I'd like it to fit comfortably in a backpack. • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Like I said I'll be doing some gaming but mostly low end games. • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim at 40+ FPS, Oblivion at 60 FPS. Kenshi at ~30 FPS. • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been considering the Zenbook 14, but I'm skeptical because apparently there's been durability issues. I previously had an HP Spectre (secondhand) which was more than enough performance, but it had really bad heating issues, so I'd like to avoid that. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:00 PM PDT Hey guys. I've been looking for a laptop for university under $1000 (buying in the US) and I can get the Spectre x360 13 (10th gen Intel i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $968 at the moment with a student discount. I was initially considering the Envy x360 13 at similar specs but with an Intel i5 CPU, but I've been unable to find it anywhere and I'm now wondering if the price bump up to the Spectre might be worth it. For context, I'm trying to prioritise a lightweight laptop with good battery life and decent processing power, mostly for schoolwork but also for pretty heavy web multitasking, streaming, and very light gaming (stuff like Night in the Woods or Minecraft, hopefully run at a reasonable quality). A good keyboard and decent pen and build quality are also fairly important. I'm not totally averse to spending the extra $300 or so but I'd much rather wait for the Envy x360 to come back into stock if there won't be a huge difference. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Basic school laptop for home and on campus, around $550 USD give or take. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:56 PM PDT Hi! I'm looking for a fast and reliable laptop that I can use in classes without loud fans disrupting or anything, and at home. Don't require anything fancy, so if a speedy laptop with good battery life and basic luxury features like 1080p is available for cheaper that'd be great too! Thanks! Total budget: $550ish USD? Can go up if there is a noticeable difference in features, or saving money would be great if everything necessary is available for cheaper. Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, if they seem trustworthy How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Mostly for basic schoolwork, so as long as performance is up to par then build quality would likely be next priority. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not required, but smaller/lighter would be nice for carrying around my backpack. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, just not toooo big. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some Photoshop and some very very light gaming, nothing too big. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Any features like the ones listed would be nice, but not required. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -fill here, remove dashes- [link] [comments] |
Need advice, I dont know what im doing! Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:32 PM PDT So i'm a broke student from Australia and want to get a laptop (for work, uni and gaming) but there are so many different brands with different specs that i cant wrap my head around. At this point I'm lost and worried i'm going to buy something only to find a cheaper and better version on some hidden website nearby. So I've ended up here for help. After extensive googling, I've ended up picking out these as my main criteria: Processor: i7 (don't really know what the differences in generations are, but a good one?) Memory: 16 gb ram Storage: 256 gb storage Size: 15inch Graphics card: I don't really know what this is, but a good one???? I'd like to be running games like csgo and League on high graphics with high fps (as currently i play on 40fps at lowest graphics on a HP Pavilion 23, and blame this for being hardstuck gold), and from what i can tell the laptop should have a graphics card to do this, but i don't really know which of these are good, or just overpriced. The one thing id like to get lowest is price. Id like to get it at around $1000 AUD ($750 USD) but i'm not sure if that is possible (maybe im deluded), so might end up going higher. But the cheaper, the better. Some of the best ones I've looked at are Legion Y540, Legion Y700, but they are all outside my budget. Love their specs tho! Some help would be appreciated! Thanks. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:28 PM PDT alright so I am looking for a ultraportable laptop that has good battery life and lightweight. I also want it to have a modern look so i can keep it for long. For the specs, I don't need a dedicated card but smt like mx250 or mx150 would be okay. All i need is top tier i7 with at least 8gb or ram (preferably smt that isn't lpddr3 or ddr3) and at least 512gb. My budget is 1500 CAD. Please give me suggestions i would appreciate it a lot tysm!
