    Tablet pen for linux laptop

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:31 AM PDT

I'm not even sure if this is the right subreddit. I have a hp envy x360 which is a 2 in 1 laptop. I use pop os. I want to buy an electronic pen to take notes during the math class using xournal. I'm scared that whatever pen I buy, might not work with Linux. Its my first time using a pen. I don't even know how to stop the screen from reading my palm. Can someone please help me, I don't know where to ask.

    Radeon software

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:35 AM PDT

I have an AMD GPU and want to be able to OC my monitor in Manjaro. I've tried following the Arch Wiki's instructions for AMDGPU but for a noob like me it's too confusing. Am I using the right guide or do I need to install something else to get the Radeon Software working?

    The console.. It's changing me..

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:55 AM PDT

I'm one of those unfortunates with a penchant for flair and I probably spend way too much time setting up my environments with the perfect colors, accents, syntax highlighting, and most importantly the font.

I've bounced between a couple for a few months now, largely Ubuntu mono, IBM plex mono, source code pro and at first iosevka, but I ended up forking that and spending ridiculous amounts of time understanding the Patel script and the underlying mechanics in order to create my own modified version..

But I'm starting to feel.. Different. Confused. Like a preteen who starts thinking about his hot cousin during extended shower sessions.

I've spent the last 2 weeks almost solidly in the VT using pixel perfect bitmap fonts. Fonts that I absolutely hated because they looked awful in the Gui environment with antialising and the likes instead are absolutely crystal clear, crisp, and flawless.

I just logged into the desktop to browse some things and open up Spotify so I could have music going and toggle back into the tty, and I damn near puked.

Staring at xterm with source code pro loaded up looking as good as it can and everything just looks horrifically blurry, it's like someone smudged everything, it's actually so bad.

Toggling ttfs off and letting ter-v14n or tamsyn7x14 take over feels releaving, a weight coming off my shoulders thst I never realized was there.

One caveat I have to mention is that I havnt sat down and figured out the freetype configuration(s), to be honest between all the Gui applications I use it seems each renders differently, some are pretty good but others are so bad that the stems almost disappear on otherwise regular to even semi bold fonts.. so things are not ideal..

But man the difference is incredible.

I need to convert some pcfs to psfs and see about trying proggy vector again because man it was so bad in Windows cleartype.. But I wonder...

    File manager / FTP

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT

TL;DR can I create a list of FTP accounts in the default file manager? And how can I change the default view to "list".

    Hi there,

I am running Linux Mint with Cinnamon.

I was in need for an FTP client with a GUI, I tried Krusader but to be honest I didn't manage to connect to a remote server.

Only because I had to work, I downloaded Filezila, I HATE the fact that they don't let you upload files on save (and you have to click that annoying pop up all the time) so I was in need of an alternative.

Whilst searching if it's possible for Filezila to upload on save (it is not.) I read something about the "default" file manager that has the ability to upload on save.

I opened a folder, I clicked File > Connect to server... and there I was, all logged in, uploading on save and living my life.

So my 2 questions, firstly, is there a way to make a list of some accounts I frequently connect to, so that I don't have to type the credentials all the time?

And secondly, is there a way to set the default view as list?

I don't know which file manager I am using, probably the one coming with Cinnamon.

(or Cinnamon has nothing to do with this? Yes I am new.)

    Thanks!

How can I scroll pages by pressing the middle cursor of the mouse?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:44 PM PDT

I'm currently using the lastest version of Linux Mint. I've found it quite fast and reliable, but despite of that the system lacks of this very useful functionality, which I miss, since I'm a Windows user. Can you explain me briefly, how can I solve the problem?

Is 190MB a sufficient size to attempt a Linux/Windows dual boot, or will I have to reinstall Windows?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:06 PM PDT

So I want to set up a dual boot between Linux and Windows on my laptop. (Specifically Arch Linux) I've done most of the setup work (e.g. disabling Secure Boot, creating the installation medium) but I'm stuck on one particular issue: the size of the EFI System Partition. According to the Arch Linux Wiki Install Guide the EFI System Partition should be 260MB - 512MB. However, my computer's EFI System Partition size is only 190MB, and it's impossible for me to resize it. (There's a Microsoft Reserved Partition in the way which I've been advised to not touch) Is 190MB enough to sustain the dual boot setup and future-proof against future big Windows updates? Or will I have to reinstall Windows 10 and manually set the size of the EFI System Partition?

Note: I am welcome to alternate Linux distros besides Arch that would better accommodate a smaller EFI System Partition if it means reinstalling Windows won't be necessary anymore.

    Linux as a privacy option

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:36 PM PDT

Hope y'all don't mind my asking this here.

My paranoid ass has been weaning myself off of a public online presence. I started using proton mail, got off social media, and am getting ready to go to a "dumb" phone. I've been so out of touch with any technology knowledge since the early 2000's so haven't even heard of Linux in a long time.

My question is: For my desktop computer, is Linux a good privacy option? My research comes up with some complex(over my head) info so was shoping ti come here for a simple answer.

Also, any good sources for how to get my desktop set up on a Linux based OS? Something an idiot could follow.

Another possibly odd question, can smart phones run off linux? If so, is that a good privacy option?

I appreciate any info. I'll be racking my brain here on my next day off researching more into all of this.

    Thanks!

Need help on updating and installing packages in a Offline Xubuntu

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT

I'm a total newbie trying to set two old laptops (oline one and offline one) in order to use Electrum in a safe way. Both of them are x32 architecture based. I've installed them the same version of Xubuntu (latest one) and they run everything pretty well. It cost me a lot, but finally got able to update the online one, also managed to install PyQt5 myself. It is needed for Electum and contained in it's appimage, which I can't use on my x32 laptops. I found a way to make the pip work somehow. So, Electrum is perfectly running on the online one, although it didn't generate an icon and I need to run it from the terminal.

Now, I need to set the offline pc and I've been trying everything I've found to do it. Finally, trying it again from the beginning, I intended to use apt-offline in order to install at least Synaptic in the offline one. I managed to install apt-offline in the offline pc and now, doing "sudo apt-offline set /temp/apt-offline.sig" I get:

"Gathering details needed for 'update' operation ERROR: FATAL: Something is wrong with the apt system. Gathering details needed for 'upgrade' operation ERROR: FATAL: Something is wrong with the apt system." I don't have any idea on why is this happening, I googled it and seems to be a bug. But I really don't know what else I could try or what I could be doing wrong.

Btw: Also tried this way and on the offline pc it creates the txt documents but there's nothing inside, so in next step answer is about there's no urls in the txt.

Help routing all ISP traffic from modem, through RPi4, to Google Wifi AP/router

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:45 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am relatively new to linux by means of a Raspberry Pi 4, but used to dabble with RPi's a few years ago and am somewhat familiar with some of the standard networking concepts. However, I am struggling to set up a solution for my specific use case below.

I am seeking to use a personal AP/router (a Google Wifi) instead of an ISP-provided Gateway but for various reasons, I need to have my Google Wifi WAN port's MAC address spoofed. This cannot be done through Google Wifi itself as Google seems to have locked that functionality down. However, I have a spare RPi4, and was wondering if I could leverage its gigabit ethernet port plus a USB-gigabit ethernet adapater to make this scenario happen:

Connect the [A] ISP modem outbound ethernet port to [B] my RPi4 with a spoofed MAC on eth0 which would then route the modem's traffic straight to my [C] Google Wifi AP/router WAN port.

In other words, I am trying to take my ISP-provided gateway out of the question by spoofing the MAC on the RPi4 instead of my personal Google Wifi AP/router. Right now it goes ISP Modem to ISP Gateway passed through to my Google Wifi. It has put constraints on my network in terms of functionality and performance that I am trying to eliminate or reduce.

I have tried a few configurations using iptables but have not had any success. Can anyone help me with at least a path forward?

I'm scared of disabling RST, should I just get a external hardrive?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:39 PM PDT

I'm scared of disabling RST, because I"m not comfortable with the possibility of reinstalling Windows.

I tried to install Ubuntu but got a disable RST message and I don't want to go through the trouble of the disabling it.Should I just run it Live each time with a 1tb external hardrive? Or is there another Linux distro I can use where I don't encounter this problem?

I just want to use Linux for productivity so I can focus on just programming. Dual booting would be easier than carrying around a external hard drive everywhere.

    Changing GPU drivers

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT

So, I've changed a GPU driver to 'recommended' proprietary one and basically DE doesn't load. Everything is okay, except the lack of GUI. Here comes my question - how do I change the driver back to open-source one? I can't find a CLI program that's a equivalent of the GUI one.

Why do the open source amd drivers not have something like radeon settings?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:39 PM PDT

What I like about the closed source drivers is that they have nice looking gui settings, for limiting fps,do anti aliasing etc. it worked really good and easy,so why the hell do the closed source drivers not have this?

I only want anti aliasing and good performance.

Ubuntu just installed, working for ~a day, now bricked. Please help.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT

So this is my very first attempt at installing / using Linux - utter noob here. I have an old 2008 macbook in which I upgraded the RAM to 4 gigs and the HD to 500GB. I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS using a bootable USB, all seemed ok yesterday, except it was running very slowly. It took several minutes from hitting the power button to the login screen, longer than proper windows or mac boot ups I've experienced. when I clicked on things, there was a noticeable delay for anything happening, and shutdown also took maybe like 7 or 8 minutes.

Anyways, I tried it again today and when the computer suspended, I couldn't log back in (though logging in at power-up was fine). I read online (on another computer) that this might mean that the GUI was configured in such a way that it doesn't have permissions or something, or some NVIDIA driver was buggy, I don't know. So I restarted the linux computer and it told me there were lots of updates to install already, so I installed them. Afterward the updates, it wanted me to log in, which I again couldn't do.

This time I couldn't shut down the computer either, so I had to pull the plug. Now it will not boot up to login at all, I just get a backlight, black screen forever after I hit the power button. I was able to get to the advanced boot options and tried to boot into recovery mode, but it just sits there saying "booting into recovery mode."

I assume I'll need to re-install, but is there a way during the install to ensure I can avoid all this next time? Thanks :)

    Trouble booting up

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:56 AM PDT

After using it a few times, I have tried to boot up Linux, but it sits on a boot up screen for about 5 minutes then displays the logon screen. It then freezes and displays an underscore at the top left of the screen which means I have to restart. I can boot windows, but Linux randomly stopped working.

How to install Manjaro Linux (currently 20.0.3 version) and make bootable USB with Rufus?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:31 AM PDT

I looked up online but most are telling it is not happening. So I downloaded Rufus (3.11) and did the same process as I did with mint and windows 10 before but saw options below format options disabled. Can somebody tell me why it is so or if I am wrong then how to go through? Or at most which other windows software can make bootable USB successfully. Thanks.
