    Laptop for my masters

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:59 AM PDT

I'm trying to spend the less as possible meting the recommended requirements. It is going to be used for studying, programming (Matlab, Simulink, C, …), running simulations, machine learning projects, and possibly uC design. Also it should last me >2 years (expect to get my masters finished in less than 3).

    CPU: intel i7 or similar

    GPU: discrete (dedicated) video card

    RAM: 16 GB

    Storage: 512 GB

    Screen: 15'' (1920x1080)

OS: Windows 10 (64 bits) (I don't care if it is included or not but no Apple thanks)

The laptops that I am considering are these ones but I'm open to recommendations:

I need a laptop for my mother

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:22 AM PDT

My mom is a teacher, however, she does not teach at the kind of school where she takes her laptop to school.

She needs a light but durable laptop, with a good battery life. Those are pretty much the only requirements, since the laptop will stay at home most of the time anyway. I asked her if she would just rather have a PC but she said she doesn't wanna just sit in one spot all the time, especially now that she has to take online classes. Oh, and she watches a lot of movies so a good screen would also be great.

Her budget is approximately 70000 INR.

General use 15in laptop at a good price

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 03:52 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Australia - ideally about AUD $2000 - $2500, less is better, bit more is okay

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      New only

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A good screen (gloss, higher res than 1080p preferred) and solid build quality is important. Average performance is fine. All-SSD storage is a must. Good battery life preferred but not too important as it's used at home (USB-C charging would be nice)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important as it's gonna be used at home, as long as it isn't needlessly bulky

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Anywhere between 15-16in (such as 15.6in)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good metal build quality, good backlit keyboard and glass precision touchpad, touchscreen not important, fingerprint reader/face unlock highly appreciated to save time. USB-C charging preferred but not a dealbreaker.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop is for my middle-aged dad for general use which involves graphs, Excel spreadsheets and such - a good gloss 15in high res screen is preferred to reduce eye-strain, doesn't have to be super colour accurate, etc it's not gonna be used for photo/video editing. Performance isn't an issue, but Core i5 or equivalent and SSD is a must for good long term smoothness. It's much preferred money be spent so that it has a great screen as well as a good keyboard/touchpad (he's currently borrowing a MacBook Pro 15 and he likes the tall high-res screen but is used to Windows 10 and the new MBP 16 is a lot more expensive than when I got mine years ago).

Was considering the Surface Laptop 15 but wanted to see what alternatives existed.

    Thank you all!

Acer Nitro 5 2020 or Asus TUF FX505 DT ?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:16 AM PDT

i am a little bit confused about which laptop i should buy.

Purpose: gaming & skill development softwares for an engineering student like CAD, simulation softwares, graphics, video editing ,coding softwares etc.

Also i wish to use it for long term purposes.

Have a tight budget, so i have selected these 2 laptops. (i didnt mention storage as i will upgrade it)

    1. acer nitro 5-2020, ryzen 5 4600h, gtx 1650 4gb ddr6, 8 gb ram
    2. asus tuf fx505dt, ryzen 5 3550h, gtx 1650 4gb ddr5, 8 gb ram

1st one's pricing is a little bit higher than the 2nd one according to the config.

But what i need to know is that , is asus tuf fx505dt will run smoothly for my mentioned purposes in the long term use? If yes, then i would buy it as i have a limited budget. But i can increase the budget if it really necessary that much.

Also, is there a big performance difference in those two processors??

Workstation-ish laptop: 3000€ maximum, Europe (BE)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:09 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      3000€ maximum, Europe (BE)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Prefered new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance in first place, battery second , build quality 3th and form factor last.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Semi important, looking for sleek (Macbook Pro like) design. Must be easily portable so not to heavy or too thick.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15 inch +. Current 13 inch too small for proper graphic design.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Adobe Graphic apps, Solidworks, Keyshot and other render apps. Some gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Wide variety of games. Looking for pleasant FPS (+-60fps?). Don't need top of the top gaming specs.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Built in mic and camera. Good keyboard. Easy touchpad. Rest is optional.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Looking for a combination of a workstation, gaming and daily use laptop. Doesn't need to be overpriced. Currently using Macbook Pro 13 inch (2018) but too limited in my workflow. Have a desktop with quadro card at home so laptop doesn't necessarily need to have one too as it is way more expensive than normal GPU's.

Macbook Air 2020 vs Macbook Pro 2020

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:22 AM PDT

    Macbook Air 2020:

1.1GHz Quad-Core Core i5 Processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
    512 GB Storage
    Touch ID

    • Retina display with True Tone
    • 1.1GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
    • Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics
    • 8GB 3733MHz LPDDR4X memory
    • 512GB SSD storage¹
    • Magic Keyboard
    • Touch ID
    • Force Touch trackpad
    • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

    Macbook Pro 2020:

1.4GHz Quad-Core Processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    256 GB Storage
    Touch Bar and Touch ID

    • 1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
    • Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645
    • 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    • 256GB SSD storage¹
    • 13-inch Retina display with True Tone
    • Magic Keyboard
    • Touch Bar and Touch ID
    • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

For college: writing, browsing, streaming/watching, long hours of google meet/zoom/apps similar to that as everything is remote learning here. The two are in the same price. I'm having doubts with macbook air as I read comments of its poor ventilation and overheating issues when just using zoom or microsoft teams. How about macbook pro?

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Do not care a lot for lightness, enough build quality to not get messed up in 1 year, enough performance for entry level gaming and a battery that lasts for more than 1 hour is crazy.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not a lot, but obviously not into carrying bricks in my backpack

more of a general gaming requirement(I'm not fixated on one genre); 60fps on high to medium would be nice
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
SSDs are the hype these days,so would like one of those(does'nt need to be huge), a relatively variety of I/O would be hot.

Thoughts on this Lenovo Legion 5 (GTX 1650 Ti / RYZEN 7 4800H) for gaming and music production?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:58 PM PDT

I was waiting on an announcement for the higher spec graphics card, but doesn't seem like it's gonna be any time soon. Do you think the 1650 Ti will suffice? I'll be using this for music production in Ableton and some (fairly casual) gaming.

How future-proof is it? I suppose the answer is I can upgrade anything (although the ram is maxed to 16gb I believe) but thoughts on how long this should last me without needing to upgrade are welcome.

Essentially, do you think it's a good deal for the money? (£999 / $1333)

    All thoughts are appreciated!

    UK Budget laptop (under £400)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:48 AM PDT

Dear folk who know about laptop specs. I'm in the market for a budget laptop (under £400). For work/personal/general use (MS Office) etc. No serious gaming and no non-standard or bloaty software, doesn't need to be ultra portable as mostly plugged in at home. I might use it occasionally for streaming Netflix etc but that's definitely not it's primary purpose. A decent amount of storage would be good but am happy to use external hard drive if necessary. I've had to return my work laptop due to redundancy and I need something to see me through until I get a new job but have no idea how long that will be. Any recommendations?

    Thanks

Looking for a general use/gaming laptop that costs around $700

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 08:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $700 - $800. USA.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes, I am.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor. Battery life and build quality are very close, though.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not that important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mainly gaming -- I might want to use Fruity Loops (music program) or an editing program in the future.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Most of the games I play aren't that intensive -- mainly just indie games. The games I play the most often are Terraria, The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, and Risk of Rain 2. RoR2 is one of the most intensive games I have, I'm pretty sure -- I'm fine with low to mid graphics, but, y'know, the higher the better.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd prefer for it to not look like a gaming laptop. A good example of what I mean by this is the Acer Nitro 5, with those little cuts at the edges of the top of the screen. It looks kinda stupid to me, and if I'm gonna be using it in public, I don't want it to look too "epic gamer's epic gaming laptop with an epic design"-y.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm a high schooler and know next to nothing about laptops. I've had a Macbook Air since middle school, which has been very limiting when it comes to, well, pretty much everything, so really any computer would be better than the one I have currently. My mom has an Acer Spin 3 and I've played The Long Dark and Risk of Rain 2 on it, and it runs fine with mid to low graphics. Which is weird, because AFAIK, it doesn't really have a dedicated graphics card (the Intel Core Processor also is in charge of graphics -- again, I know nothing about computers.) The RoR2 Steam page says that the minimum graphical specs required (GTX 580 / AMD HD 7870) are most likely way better than the graphics my mom's computer has, but it runs fine. It's confusing.

    Which cpu should i choose?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:52 PM PDT

    Hi,

My pc is way faster than my laptop. Maybe i want to buy a laptop that kinda match that. My pc has ryzen 5 3600. My current laptop has i5 6200u

There is a sale now for a laptop with ryzen 3 4300u and 8gb ddr4 2666 for only 399 euros. Will this one feel speedier with the things i do?( Web browsing, texting, listening music, sometimes all that on the same time) Or should i choose ryzen 4500u? That one is 16gb 3200 and is now for 644 euros.

What makes my pc faster even with browsing? Is this the single core speeds?
