Why are folders filled with ogg files so slow?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 06:24 PM PDT

I have some folders that each contain about 20 ogg audio files. Every time I open a folder in Windows Explorer, it takes a few seconds for the files to appear. This is really annoying, especially when I have to access multiple folders. This delay doesn't seem to occur with other folders. What's causing this delay?

Is there a way to speed things up?

Trying to remove password on old hard drive

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 05:35 PM PDT

Hello all, this may be the wrong place to request this but I was wondering if it's possible to remove the password to a Windows account on a hard drive.

I have an old laptop that no longer works but it has some highly important documents for a program I use. I also no longer remember the password to said account. I have the hard drive hooked up to my PC but I don't have privilege to view some of the folders.

What I'm really looking for is if there is a way to remove the password so I could place this hard drive into a new laptop and just log into it as is. Any pointers or tips?

Edit: Both - the hard drive of the laptop and the PC that I'm using run Windows 7

A long, long time ago, Windows created "Program Files (x86)" as a stopgap for program incompatibility when switching to 64bit. Is there a way to permanently merge this with Program Files yet?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 05:30 PM PDT

Just seems like we've been using this "stopgap" for a long time, and I don't see much point anymore. In the old days the concern was that you might want to install both a 32 bit and a 64 bit version of the same program so this provided a way for both to co-exist. I don't see a need for it anymore, certainly not in my use cases, so I'm wondering if there's a registry key or something I can change to make everything install to Program Files, and maybe even move the stuff that's already in (x86).

    [Help] Wifi keeps having issues

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:59 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm on the Windows 10 Version 2004 and every time my laptop disconnects from the wifi and starts saying unable to connect to the network. I've tried updating/rolling back the driver but it doesn't seem to work. The only thing that seems to fix it temporarily is a restart but it wasn't like this before and having to restart my pc every 5 hours isn't comfortable. Happened again tonight and this is what the log says, any help will be appreciated

Microsoft Store nor working. missing xml fire

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 03:55 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Last week i had to do a windows update and during the update my pc shut off. this caused my pc to crash and it corrupted a lot of programs/files. atm im not able to use the microsoft store and all it apps like calculator/powershell/skype/video player, it instantly shuts down.

at first i tried the MediaCreationTool to hopefully repair my pc but it did not work... after that ive looked into a lot of fixes but non seem to work because im missing a file...

i was able to redownload powershell as a standalone program and i've run the following command :

    Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

This gave me the following error :

Add-AppxPackage: Cannot find path 'C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsStore_12008.1001.1.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppXManifest.xml' because it does not exist.

Anyone has any clue if i can redownload this file somwhere?

    Thanks in advance.

Shut down time and restart time prolonged

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Anyone noticed since what update has windows prolonged the amount of time it takes to do a complete shutdown of the machine or a complete reboot? It's starting to be an issue as I work with speed performance and need to turn on and off my machines as fast as I can.

Is it strange that my PC can gets very laggy and unresponsive if I don't download the latest windows update?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:57 PM PDT

Ive noticed something ever since I've had my hands on Windows 10. If there's a new update and, i dont install it, my pc almost becomes unusable. It lags very bad to the point where even starting it up, takes more than 10 minutes to load. Trying to play games is a total nightmare when this happens. Today was the first day that ive had internet in over a year.

Of course my pc is going to be out of date. But, as soon as it was hooked back onto an internet connection, it suddenly becomes this sluggish, unresponsive machine. It acts as if I had it for 30 years and is about ready to die out on me. I use to have slow DSL internet from verizon and it was always terribly slow and, made updating my pc a nightmare. Now, i finally have high speed 200 mbps internet.

I thought that it would make updating a lot easier. But i was wrong. As soon as I tried to play an online game, my frame rate and fps went straight down the toilet. The game would literally freeze every 3 to 5 seconds. I wanted to play video games s so bad since i haven't played for so long and, and i just didnt have the patients to wait for it to update. Well, I gave in and, let it update for 12 hours.

As soon as everything is done, my laptop instantly goes back to normal and, I was able to play video games again without any drops in frame rate or fps. Is this situation a common occourance or is my laptop just out of the ordinary?

32 GB RAM installed but only 15.9 GB RAM usable

32 GB RAM installed but only 15.9 GB RAM usable

    Here is the information

    https://preview.redd.it/8dybry3h30k51.png?width=928&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b81ec1ed881f7d772c372d2347dc37d76983c8a

As you can see I have 32 GB (top right corner) installed but 16.1 GBs of it is reserved for the hardware, as a result, I now only have 15.9 GB usable.

Any way to unlock the 16.1 GBs reserved for the hardware? I would like to use most of my 32 GB RAM for gaming and running other processes.

    Thx in advance.

    Urgent. Assistance/Ideas required.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:32 AM PDT

Me and my friend, who both had windows laptops with windows 10 installed, lost our laptops. They were stolen from us. After going on the Microsoft account and tracking our devices, we found that our battery was lesser than what it was on the day it was stolen and the location of both our laptops was in close proximity. However, each time we click the refresh button, the location changes and becomes something new (each new location isn't that far from the previous one)

My question is as follows: Can me and my friend do something other than this to track our laptop? We have already filed a police complaint but that isn't that helpful in getting them back.

Also, do you guys think that it is possible to remotely clean our laptop? The already existing "lock my laptop" ain't working and is shit. Me and my friend had sensitive information on our laptops and we really wanna wipe it off clean if we can't find our laptops.

P.S : We are two students in Canada.

Is it possible to make phone calls from Windows using my landline?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:45 PM PDT

Is it possible to make phone calls from Windows using my landline?

Pardon if I don't know how to phrase the question proficiently allow me to explain, my ISP gave me a new modem this modem has an input from a long thic cable that is screwed into the modem, then it outputs the usual Ethernet cable which I plug to my computer, and a way smaller ethernet-like cable (don't know what its named) this cable goes directly into my phone, so I assume is the landline. I plug it in and voala I can make landline phone calls.

Now I was looking at my modem settings and noticed that there is a Telephony section and it's even shown to have the line on hook, so I'm wondering, is it any way that I can make phone calls using my computer instead? would I need an accessory to plug the dial-up cable into my computer or do I have to use some special settings to do it through Ethernet.

I know I can do calls using skype, etc. But that's not why I'm interested in this, I just really hate having my landline phone on my desk, it takes up space and it sounds very bad. Also is quite hard to find any information cuz most videos or tutorials I find are for completely unrelated things, I feel like I'm inquiring about obsolete tech/protocols, but I'm curious if it's still possible to make calls using a computer as a phone.
