Windows Defender started quarantining Hosts file that blocked Windows Telemetry Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:13 AM PDT After several years without an issue, Windows Defender just quarantined my hosts file, where I had blackholed a number of Microsoft telemetry servers. Windows then immediately generates a new, default hosts file, that has the servers unblocked. Hitting restore, just causes it to quarantine it again. Eventually, after several tries, I was able to restore, and then whitelist it before Defender could quarantine/delete it again. Wanted to pass along a warning for anyone using the Hosts file to improve their privacy. [link] [comments]

Upgraded to windows 10 education and now I can’t access certain settings Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:31 PM PDT I upgraded from home to education using the free upgrade my uni gives us and it says "some of these settings are hidden or managed by your organisation" I'm not bothered about the settings but does my uni have any control over my pc now? Can they track anything or see what I do? I checked if I joined a azure domain and nothing came up. So is that message just part of windows 10 education? [link] [comments]
I update to 2004 build and now task bar and start menu are no longer transparent/glass Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:50 PM PDT The buttom in Personalize/Collors are active, but they just look solid. Tips how to fix? [link] [comments]
"System interrupts" high CPU until Task Manager opens Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:51 PM PDT I'm not the first to bring this up. When I open Task Manager, "system interrupts" shows almost 100% CPU usage, then quickly hides back down to 0.1%. Couldn't figure it out. Did the sfc scannow, did the reset, But I have news. Windows 10 is not only fully updated, but clean. I bought a new hard drive. I installed Windows 10. I updated everything. The very FIRST thing I did was check Task Manager and sure enough, this happens. I didn't even open the browser for drivers. Nothing. The ONLY thing I did on a fresh Windows 10 installation was check Task Manager. I thought it was Malware. It's actually just Microshaft's bad updates! [link] [comments]
Browser removes commercials from YouTube playlists and videos Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:24 PM PDT (approved by Froggypwns) This browser lets you watch YouTube playlists and videos without being annoyed by those "click after 5 seconds to remove" commercials, and without touching the keyboard. Although this program was created for the 17 million people with Cerebral Palsy, everyone can enjoy a browser that does not require you to interact with a keyboard or menus, while watching videos. You can create Custom Collections containing YouTube playlists and videos, and websites. While watching a Collection, you can display the next video or website in the Collection by simply clicking anywhere on the screen. And best of all, no commercials. I hope you enjoy this free program. [link] [comments]

Constant, random freezes while playing games.... Posted: 29 Jul 2020 12:55 PM PDT I posted this post several weeks ago, but the only comment I got was a confirmation from someone with the same problem. I get random video and audio freezes while playing games, including War Thunder, Destiny 2, and Fortnite. Fortnite is so bad that it is literally unplayable. Changing the settings of any of these games has little to no effect. In fact, the lower the Fortnite settings, the worse the problem. This problem persists across multiple Windows installs, multiple Windows builds, and on multiple hardware configurations, including both WiFi and Ethernet Internet connections. I am running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS B350, AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB RAM, AMD RX 580, 120GB SSD, and 1TB HDD. Windows used to be just on the HDD but then I decided to try putting the OS on the SSD and the games on the HDD. Windows runs a little better, but there is no change at all in the performance of the games. My friend and I have done quite a bit of research, but nothing, absolutely nothing works, and I am just about to lose it. I am absolutely sick of having my audio cut out in the middle of a gun fight for a full second. And it makes no sense! I must note that I also run Manjaro Linux on the same computer and I have played games, including Shadow of Mordor and War Thunder, with no performance problems whatsoever. If you can shed any light on this massive impediment to enjoyable gameplay, I would be eternally grateful. [link] [comments]
Does windows run better on specific devices? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:16 PM PDT I saw someone say windows runs best on Microsoft products and it runs rubbish on the XPS series. Is this true? And What does that even mean? I've always used MacOS but now I'm deciding between surface book 3 and XPS 15 so I would like to understand what they meant [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jul 2020 12:07 PM PDT Is there a way to make an app full screen within an un-maximized window? I want to play a YouTube video in a small window on the corner of my screen specifically. It would be nice if there was just a setting so that full screen automatically took the shape and size of the window it was in instead of filling up the whole screen. I have downloaded a few chrome extensions but none seemed to work. Any help would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:30 AM PDT When I installed all required applications on my laptop my storage still had 201gb free out of 256gb ssd. After a few days the space has reduced to 193gb without me downloading any new application or downloading any file. What I have observed is, system and reserved is taking a lot of space and it is increasing. Right now it is 27.0 gb which I think is a lot. Any solutions.. ? I am not running out of space nor do I need to download anything right now but it is just concerning me from a few days. [link] [comments]
Making installed softwares more portable via specific registry backups Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:18 PM PDT As the title says really. I want to backup the relevant registry keys associated with an application I've got installed so that i can make it more portable. All i need to do then is copy the installed applications folder data and merge the keys. It is for Amiga collection software that i don't always want taking up space but would like to dip into once in a blue moon. Is there software that harvests all relevant registry keys (like an uninstaller app does in order to clean them) and allows export of them? Or is there software out there that can select an application (installed already or maybe using the setup.exe file?) And can 'make it portable'? Could be really useful at times [link] [comments]
Is it possible to run windows 10 without a SSD/HHD? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:13 PM PDT Long story short, I was buying all the parts for a gaming pc. Everything came to me, except my hard drive. The dude in the FedEx truck apparently sent it to the wrong location and now I'm waiting a week if not longer for them to "investigate" the situation. In the mean time will a usb run windows for that purpose, or are they're drawbacks to it. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:34 PM PDT I've been getting this error for the past week or so when trying to do a Windows update. If anybody has any idea of how to fix this, it would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
How do you create an animated screensaver in windows 10? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:26 PM PDT I've done allot of searching and found that you can use the pictures in a folder as frames that will be displayed in sequence. The minimum time between displaying the next frame is a few seconds, but this is modifiable in registry here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Personalization\Desktop Slideshow This however feels like a terrible hack, or otherwise something unintended. Whats the proper way to display a gif or any other video format as a screensaver in windows 10? [link] [comments]
Is there a way to forcefully terminate a user's active session in Windows AD? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT We have around 200 users in our organization that authenticate to various applications (Jira, Confluence, Splunk, Oracle tools, etc) within our network via LDAP using their Windows Active Directory credentials. We have a centralized Active Directory on Windows Server 2016. We have various contractors that also work for us, and they are leveraging their own company laptops to access our network as well. To access any of these tools, one would need to be within the company VPN. One of the use cases that I'm attempting to fulfill is around immediate AD session/connection termination which would primarily come into play if an individual was fired. While only disabling the individual's AD account would prevent them from authenticating to any new applications, I don't believe that action would kill their existing sessions. For example, if they were logged into an AD-governed application, such as Splunk or Jira, and their AD account was disabled, I don't believe that their connection to Splunk/Jira would be immediately terminated. Is there a way that our AD admins can force-terminate an AD session for a user? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:59 AM PDT They started working just now for a couple of minutes again and then stopped working. I tried to do a system restore as well, and they still would not work. I also posted this in r/techsupport. [link] [comments]
Need help with bootrec /rebuildbcd Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:41 AM PDT Hi, I recently uninstalled Pop!_OS as a dual boot with Windows 10, but now my Windows Boot Manager has disappeared from my boot menu. I can still boot into Windows through GRUB commands by just typing "exit", but this is obviously not ideal. I tried to use a recovery disk and then I tried to use bootrec /rebuildbcd. It returns that it was able to scan one Windows installation, but then when I hit "y" for yes, it says that the system cannot find the file specified. Same issue with all other bootrec commands. Please help! [link] [comments] |
