This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Learn from my mistakes: Research EVERYTHING, THEN buy.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I just thought I'd share my experience here since the only other logical thing I can think of doing is making a goofy YouTube video with multiple characters depicting different parts of my brain and how I jumped the gun on researching parts. I recommend listening to "Time to Pretend" by MGMT while reading this absolute BOOK. It's time to pretend I didn't waste over $1k.

It should be a well known thing: research everything you're planning on buying from specs down to why/if you need it. I recently bought an i9-9900k (recent, like June). I've been very out of the loop as far as technological advancements in CPU/GPU developments (and everything else computers) as I was finishing up my final year of college. I basically went from full nerd in my freshman year with an i7-4770/GTX 970 to being completely clueless. I also sort of evolved from PC gamer to filmmaker.

Give or take 5 years pass by and I'm thinking "I need a new PC to edit 4K footage and VFX with 0 hiccups," not necessarily thinking about games too much. I then recall hearing a lot about "i9" processors and how they're great for productivity... I've also had an i9 build in PC Partpicker for over a year now. This is where I went wrong.

Suddenly, we're in quarantine. I NEED something to distract me. I keep thinking about a blaaaazing fast computer and how simple life would be if Adobe Premiere/After Effects ran like a hot knife through butter. Then, one morning, my mom wakes me up and says she's going to Microcenter, so what do I do? I reserve an i9-9900k for $450.

Me: "WOOAH this thing is so strong and I got it for under $500!"

I wake up the next day and 10th gen processors are all over my newsfeed. Cheaper with better performance??? F***********K!

I built my system around impulse-buying a decently outdated (especially if we're talking about price/performance) CPU.

    • This also means I bought an LGA1151 socket motherboard. Even if I wanted to sell this CPU for a 10th gen, I'd have to sell the motherboard too.
    • Of course, the 3200MHZ DDR4 ram I bought is capped at 2133MHZ because i9 doesn't support higher?????
    • I can't think of another bad thing to add to this list, but I think short lists look better with at least 3 bullets.

...I also bought an RTX 2060 6 months BEFORE I realized I wanted to build an entirely new system.

......So then I had an RTX 2060 SC and an i9-9900k. I see that they don't perform that well together, "If you're going to spend $500 on a CPU, DOUBLE that for a GPU." - People on the internet... despite my EYES not being able to tell a damn difference.

............SO NOW I go on ebay and buy a GTX 1080Ti SC for $560, and I'm thinking "I'm f****** stupid. This whole thing was so dumb I could have saved so much money and had a more powerful PC."

But you know what? Maybe I am stupid, but this computer is also stupid fast and perfect for my needs. Editing and rendering is a dream... now imagine if I had a 10th gen- NO! STOP IT BRAIN!

I'm trying to look at this as a lesson learned, and you should too- if you're a newb to building. I thought I knew everything about PC's, and maybe I did 5 years ago. I thought I was totally in the clear to make that initial CPU purchase.

And don't get me wrong, the i9 is a powerful processor. I just didn't know how much it was NOT worth it to invest in currently. I should have paid more attention to... the future!

I can't be mad at anyone but myself. Just disappointed. I know better than to waste money like this. There I was thinking I was being frugal LOL. However, I'm eternally grateful that I was even able to save that money to begin with. It's a privilege to be able to buy computer parts with money saved. I know a lot of people struggle with that, so this computer will be fully utilized for work as intended. So far it's made editing a joy!

Edit: A few things, I spent just under $1.5k for my parts. I also do game on occasion. I kill time in Warzone, RDR 2 and The Outer Worlds. I'm not crazy on getting the most FPS, just a stable experience with decent settings.

    TL;DR: I built what I call "The 2020 Impulse Build - Buyer's Remorse Edition." https://pcpartpicker.com/b/XFPnTW

Why are we still seeing people buy intel over AMD with everything intel are doing?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Title says it all, I'm confused as to why people buy intel with what they're doing recently, and how much they're charging for 2-5% more performance?

    So yeah, any real reason?

Edit: thanks for feedback guys, General consensus is that there are some use cases still better suited and familiarity I guess?

New to PC. This will be my first PC but I want last minute advice :)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:22 AM PDT

All the prices or what's close to it are on the right. The budget was 600 but I went over slightly.

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 - 159.99

    MB: ASRock b450 - 69.99

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance (8x2, 3600mhz)-64.51

    SSD: Crucial P1 500gb - 59.99

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 super - 249.99

    TOWER: Deepcool matrexx - 34.99

    Thermaltake 600w -54.99

    WiFi adapter - 15.99

    Total - 630

    > Edit: going with 1660 super after a lot of feedback (thx!). But I now have a problem with Power supply. 80+ bronze is sold out everywhere and I have to switch it up. Is there a major difference between white and bronze? Is white worse?

    > Edit 2: found EVGA 600w power supply but it doesn't say bronze or anything of the matter only black? Please help

    > Edit 3: Solved.

    Mission Accomplished!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:31 AM PDT

I've always wanted to do my own build, and I've been drooling over a lot of the builds on /r/sffpc. It was a challenge, but the reward was well worth the effort in the end.

    So here's my build, a Brickless S4M | Ryzen 7 3700x | Zotac 2070 Super Mini.

I tried to be as step by step as possible for anyone else that wants to build their own S4M or anyone interested in the challenges of SFFPC.

First build in a long time, want to make sure it's all kosher.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

It's been about 6 years since I've bought a new PC, so I figured I was finally due an upgrade. This PC is meant for gaming, including higher-end graphics games and there's a bit of wiggle room with the budget if there's major gains to be had. I live in the United States.

I'm buying a Dell 1440p monitor with freesync to hopefully be able to cap my FPS at the right level, though I've never done it before. I'm not too sure how that works, but hopefully this hardware is good enough for that so I can try it out. I'd like to keep my fps 100+, though I've long been used to 1080p and 60 for years.

Another thing that I had heard about was setting up RAID 0 to stripe across multiple NVME hard drives, to make the disks operate even faster, but I'm not sure if these are the correct drives to attempt something like that, and whether my motherboard will allow it. Any help there would be appreciated.

PC Case similar to the Corsair 220T but ever so slightly bigger.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:02 PM PDT

So, to cut a long story short I want the 220T. However, I'm also going to be getting a Corsair H100i rgb Pro AIO Cooler.

The problem is, the cooler ironically wont seem to fit in that case the majority of the time. The main issue placing the radiator on the top being that if you have RGB RAM, which is almost always taller than non-RGB, one of the fans for the cooler wont fit. And if you want to mount it to the front you run the risk of breaking your tubes when trying to route them over your GPU. (And I don't want to mount it to the front anyway)

Honestly it sucks, because I really love that case but cooling is a big thing for me and I'm kind of sold on the cooler I've selected.

So if anyone has any other case suggestions that are similar to the 220T in both its appearance and cooling capability that would be fantastic.

TL;DR Cooler I'm getting more than likely wont fit in the case I want (Corsair 220T), so I need a slightly bigger case that looks the same.

Looking to upgrade my processor and would appreciate some advice

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:02 PM PDT

    Currently using an i5-2500k CPU @ 3.30GHz.

Feeling like it's time for an upgrade for the CPU as I've had this one for around 10 years, but haven't been keeping up with processors since then. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

As for goals/price range, I'm looking in to streaming games so something that could handle it would be nice. Looking in the $300-400 price range, maybe a little higher if it meant really getting my money's worth. Using a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB currently as a GPU, and am willing to upgrade parts around the new processor if necessary.

    Thanks for the help!

Does no one make good cases with side fans anymore?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I'm in the market for a new case but it seems like these days all of the case manufacturers are obsessed with tempered glass sides. I'm the type who hates RGB and has no desire to show off the inside of my PC. All I care about is good airflow. Are there no modern cases with side fans and USB-C front headers? Or at least USB 3.2? I'm currently thinking about settling for the Phanteks P500A but I really wish that Cooler Master would release an updated HAF 932 with USB-C and more fans in the front instead of drive bays.

    Ryzen 5 3600 compatible with 3600MHz RAM?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 05:04 AM PDT

The Amazon Australia listing for the Ryzen 5 3600 notes it has "support for dual-channel 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM".

The motherboard (alt link) I'm looking at getting says it supports up to 4133 MHz.

Does it not support 3600 MHz RAM? Would it be a mistake to purchase 2 x 16GB 3600 MHz RAM? Can I only use 3200 MHz or lower RAM?

Is anybody else super excited for the budget implications of the Ryzen 4800G?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:35 AM PDT

I personally won't be buying one because I already have a 3700x but the demo they put out for the integrated graphics is actually super impressive. You could legitimately build a PC capable of playing modern games at a reasonable framerate without even needing a discrete GPU. This could actually be the best way to convert people over to PC who can't afford a proper setup.

    ITX recommendations (sanity check)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I'm currently looking to downsize my tower to an ITX rig - due to wanting something a touch more portable/wanting to free up some space on my desktop.

I'm currently running a R5 3600 on an ATX B450 motherboard and am stumped as to whether to upgrade to B550 with the downsize. Are there any really good reasons to pick up a B550 ITX board? The chassis I am planning to use doesn't have type c front panel so an on board header for that isn't a concern and as I already have a NVMe gen3 boot drive, I can't find a good reason to spend an extra £70 for the B550 version of the board I was looking at.

Basically I'm asking for a sanity check, am I right that in my circumstances there's little to no reason to increase cost of swapping to SFF?

Trying to get my 120 hz TV to display my PC at 120hz

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:27 PM PDT

My Sharp LC-42LB150U is capable of 120hz but I never had anything able to push out that refresh rate before my first PC build.

I have an EVGA 1660 Super SC and an HDMI 2.0

When plugged into my TV's DVI port, Motion Enhancement is an option and turned on. Still I am stuck at 60 hz like my monitor which I know is locked at 60 hz.

There is a VGA (PC in) port on my TV, should I get a convertible cable HDMI to VGA?

Or should I get a Display port cable and get a converter to HDMI

I think I read somewhere that HDMI is locked at 60 hz for PCs. I'm just trying to maximize the tech I have at the moment and any advice would be appreciated!

Edit: The resolution I'm dealing with is 1080p

First time building PC in 9 years. Review my mini-ITX build?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone, built a PC about 9 years ago but stopped PC gaming about 3 years ago after getting bored with PC games and giving it to my parents as a gift (also since I didn't want to carry a heavy, outdated computer across the country after finishing college), so I've been relatively out of the loop for a while now. Looking to build a semi-budget mini-ITX since I have a tiny studio now and I've had an insatiable craving to play Team Fortress 2 in past months lol.

Purposes are mainly for gaming (TF2, Civ, Halo:MCC, random other games), emulation (GameCube/Wii era), light streaming, and video recording.

Editing would be done on my Mac and video storage is not a problem since I have a NAS. I also have some random HDDs lying around I'm planning on sticking in here in the future.

Feel free to let me know if I can do better anywhere else.

    How resilient are memory sticks?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:06 PM PDT

    Good evening, everyone,

Some days ago, I purchased a 4G Kingston stick to do a little upgrade to my computer.

When I've opened my CPU case, removed the old and default stick, and tried to put the other one, I did too much pressure on it. The reason of that, is because, I've seen some videos where people try to install a new RAM stick, and when they apply pressure down, it sounds like a "click", but in my case, it wasn't like that.

I tried applying pressure, and didn't sound like a click, then tried on installing the stick on the other pin, and nothing... Then I've discovered that it wasn't necessary to hear that "click" sound when applying pressure... the stick was already installed, it wasn't necessary to apply so much force... yeah...

I closed up the CPU case, reinstalled everything as it was before, and now my PC runs smoother. I didn't experience any problems since I've installed it, and I'm really relieved for that part... but the point of all of this is:

Considering that I tried to install my new RAM in two different pins, and applied too much force when doing it, I'm supposed to be worried about that? Note that, I didn't hear any "cracks" when doing that stuff, or something like that. I'm just concerned about the amount of pressure I've applied to the stick several times.

Despite it's working properly, I'm paranoic about this case, and hence, I would like the opinion of yours. How resilient are the memory sticks? Should I be worried about something?

And yes, as I said before, everything works fine on my PC. Nothing bad. Just this kind of thoughts...

    Cheers.

B450 vor B550? Ryzen 5 3600. Help me pick, please!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:04 PM PDT

I'm itching to upgrade my CPU and motherboard, as I will be doing quite a lot of editing and stuff. Currently, I run a Ryzen 3 1200 with a B350 motherboard, so please don't tell me to wait for the Ryzen 4600 or whatever. I need an upgrade done in <2 weeks.

I need help in choosing one of these two motherboards for the Ryzen 5 3600:

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max MSI B550-A Pro

As far as things go, the B550 is slightly better and a bit more expensive. Now if I were to go with the B450 board instead, I could put the money that I save towards an aftermarket cooler (yes, I will be overclocking the 3600 when possible).

Here's the thing: I'm also thinking of upgrading to a 12-core Ryzen 4000 part in the future (think 4900X). Would it make sense to go with the B450 now and possibly deal with a future BIOS update, or spend a bit more, go with the B550 and save myself from the possible headache that is the Ryzen 4000 support on B450?

    Many thanks!

I tried installing an ssd to pc, but now it won't turn on

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I just built my pc about two weeks ago. After struggling to have a second ssd delivered to my house, I went to best buy and bought one from there so I wouldn't have to wait anymore. I already have an m.2 on the mobo. After plugging in the data and sata cables to the new ssd, I flipped the power switch on and saw the mother light up. When I pressed the power button, however, nothing else turned on. I took off the secondary ssd and see if thats the issue, but now my pc won't turn on at all. I have no knowledge about pc's and this is my very first build so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong/different. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if I don't respond to comments at first, I'm probably sleeping. Please help me out with this.
