Best cheap laptop for Outdoor use (UK) Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:50 AM PDT I'm actually in Luxembourg not the UK but I need a UK QWERTY keyboard so will have to order online (or pick up next time I can travel there to visit family). My current laptop is nearly 10 years old and starting to struggle with the modern web. I'm looking for something new for learning to code. My main requirement is a screen that's useable outside so I can work in the garden on sunny days. I bought a Surface Pro 7 and although I love it I think I will return it as it seems to start overheating and throttling under heavy loads and the screen, while bright, is just too glossy for outdoor use. So I started to think it makes more sense to buy an "normal" laptop and a separate iPad for tablet duties. My budget is up to £1000 but I'd like to keep closer to £600 if possible so I have enough left for an iPad. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Media Consumption Laptop recommendation, with good sound quality? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:03 AM PDT Hi all I currently own the 12 inch macbook and I am looking to upgrade but despite being 3 years old struggling to find anything better. My main criteria is picture and sound quality not that worried about specs. I was on the fence with the new Dell XPS 13 it ticked all the boxes and apparently has good sound quality but tried one in store and the sound is not even in the same league as my macbook. Hoping someone has a suggestion or 2? [link] [comments] |
Lenovo IdeaPad S540 (15.6") PWM flickering issue Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:24 AM PDT I recently ordered Lenovo IdeaPad S540 (15.6", i5-10 gen) and am waiting for it to arrive. I read in a review blog (notebookckeck.net) that this laptop uses low frequency PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) for brightness control which can cause eye strain. Has onyone experienced any eye problems while looking at the display for extended period of time? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:15 AM PDT In the market for Laptop since January 2020. Kinda fed up of the the OEMs launching overpriced variants in India. Finaly boiled down my choices to MSI GP65 9SD (i7 9750H, 1660ti, 16gb, 120Hz) or Lenovo Legion 5 (Ryzen 5 4600H, 1650ti, 120Hz) I am looking for a desktop replacement laptop for gaming and streaming. Form factor doesn't matter as much. If you guys have any other picks in mind do let me know Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Upgrade SSD on a MBP or just get a new laptop? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:36 AM PDT I have a 2015 MBP that I'm not sure I want to part with just yet, I like the Apple OS and design much more than Windows but I won't get a new MacBook since they don't have ports. It still runs pretty well, the battery drains a bit faster than it used to but overall I'm still fairly happy with it, except I'm running out of storage at 126GB. Should I upgrade the SSD to like 500GB for ~$200 with an online kit, or just get a new laptop? Is upgrading the SSD worth the hassle? Should I just get a SD card? I mostly want some more space for games (nothing too intense, obviously, its a mac) and movies/TV shows. I have the money to spend around $1500 on a new laptop, but honestly I really like my MBP and dislike most of the Windows options out there. But is upgrading the SSD worth it? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:15 PM PDT Hi there, apologies for the lengthy post. just recently found out about this page and I thought this would be a great place to voice my dilemma and see what others opinions would be. I'm currently going for a full stack development program at my local community college and I'm finally deciding on my first laptop. My budget is around $2300. According to my advisor, the specs I would need to be able to run the programs for the classes would be a modern i5 or better, 16 gb of RAM or higher, 512 gb SSD or more, and VTX capabilities in BIOS (which I'd assume most laptops could handle that). With that in mind I decided to look deeply into A LOT of different laptops that could fit this criteria and more since I plan on this thing being my daily driver for as long as possible. I've seen a lot of reviews and read a ton of write ups on which laptop would be a perfect fit but I'm still stuck in the same place I was when I started the search about a month ago. Recently I've been looking at 3 completely different laptops and I would love to hear some input on them. Apples MacBook Pro: I found the new 16" MacBook Pro with a 9th gen i7, 16 gb of RAM and 512 gb SSD storage for $2075. I'm really considering the MacBook since I've owned a few Apple products throughout my life and I genuinely enjoy their ecosystem. That being said, how easy would it be to be able to dual boot the system with windows for my classes for some of the programs that are used? Could the specs I mentioned handle that? Would it even be worth my time? Microsoft's Surface Book 3: Just like the MacBook, it's pretty damn pricey (around $2500) and it's hard to find for a good deal brand new for them with the specs I'd like. One thing I love about it is the fact that it's detachable from the keyboard. Pretty cool gimmick I thought I'd mention even though I don't see myself detaching it very often. MSI GS66 Stealth: I know, this ones a curveball considering how much it differs from the other two. The only reason I'm considering this is only because my younger brother (who's a massive pc gamer) thinks this is the best bang for the buck or however that saying goes. With the specs I'd need I'm looking at $1600 plus the 2060 that's thrown in there is a plus. I'm more of a console player and have the most recent ones that I normally use. Only once in a great while will I get on my brothers desktop that he built and play games like beam.ng, red dead 2, or doom eternal. For the price this seems like a great laptop however I don't see the need for the 2060 since I rarely play pc games and if I ever decided to get into that in the future I'd build a desktop that could handle a lot better. What are your thoughts and opinions on these three choices? Do you have another laptop you could recommend that you'd think would be a perfect fit? Thank you in advance to those who take the time out of their day to help me out. TL;DR - I'm an indecisive idiot who can't make a decision between a MacBook Pro, surface book 3, or MSI GS66 Stealth. Looking for $600 USD laptop in the US for light gaming and D&D Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:11 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
$600 USD
No
build quality, battery life, performance
It will be sitting in my lap for long periods of time, so preferably not very heavy. Beyond that, no particular preference. My current laptop is about 7 lbs and it's perfectly fine in terms of weight.
Light gaming(nothing competitive, no mmo's, generally older games I've enjoyed on console and want to try on PC - for example, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Baldur's Gate)
This would be my first time playing games on PC since Diablo 2 on dialup in 2001, so I don't have an answer for this.
Plan to be doing regular voice and/or video chat, and need a good keyboard. I generally dislike touchscreen interfaces on computers. At least a 5 hour battery life preferred, and good speakers.
I'm currently running a 2008 Toshiba with Windows Vista, using a monitor from a Compaq desktop from the same year as the laptop's monitor connection is based and the screen flickers. Literally anything made in the last decade is an upgrade for me, as nothing I'm running is actively supported by... well, anyone, anymore. I'm primarily looking for a laptop to run my D&D campaigns, so I will be doing a lot of writing, note taking, web browsing, while simultaneously running Roll20 and Discord. I plan on designing maps and such via web based applications like Inkarnate. I also have money set aside for antivirus/malware programs, if anyone has suggestions. Preferably, the laptop will be reliably useful for at least 4 years. [link] [comments] |

Please Help Decide! ASUS G14 (4900HS) or A15 (4900H), or something else??? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:22 AM PDT
Trying to decide between the Asus ROG G14 with the ryzen - 4900HS with RTX 2060 Max-Q ~$2800 AUD vs the ASUS TUF A15 FA506IV with the Ryzen - 4900H with RTX 2060. ~$2100 AUD On one side the G14 is more portable, smaller, has an amazing processor, but is not ram up-gradable (due to one slot being soldered) and has the Max-Q 2060 as a bottleneck. The TUF A15, has a little better processor being a 4900H instead of HS, has a much better GPU due to it not being Max-Q, but most importantly is cheaper. Screen is bad, but I'm gonna be using an external monitor for games anyway, so the screen is only for netflix and CAD. The question is, are thermal design screw-ups going to downgrade its power to be of the same as of G14? But, I plan on buying a separate bottom cover and drilling some extra ventilation holes in it (so that it doesn't void the warranty, if claiming on it I'll just put the original cover back on). And adding some heat sink. So overall, which one is more powerful and better laptop? I've been seeing a lot of reviews on the G14 saying how good it is, but I'm really hesitant because of the bottleneck gpu, high temperatures and little upgradability. Meanwhile there isn't many reviews on the TUF 4900H in particular, so just wondering which one should I get. Want to hear what everyone else thinks, especially if someone got the TUF 4900H. Please share. [link] [comments] |

$2300 USA, but the closer I can get to $2000 the better.
No
Weight > Performance > Everything else.
Under 5 lbs, as close to 4 lbs. as possible, ideally sub 4.4 lbs.
15.6 preferred.
Gaming and Socializing/Collaborating over webcam.
High specs mostly for future proofing.
RTX 2070 Max-P or RTX 2070 Super Max-P, Webcam at TOP, 6mo-1 year dead pixel guarantee, thermal grizzly conductonaut or equivalent TIM, 16 GB ram, WI-FI 6, I prefer a 1 TB SSD but 512 GB SSD is okay if there is also a 2nd slot.
So, this is really more of a theoretical thing. My first goal was to spend a somewhere a smidge north of $1000, $1500 tops. The Eluktronics RP-15 captured my heart. I wanted to buy the Eluktronics RP-15 (which I know doesn't have a 2070) because I love supporting smaller companies, I want to support AMD for a healthier competitive landscape in PC gaming, and I think their laptops look cool and their Eluktroboost feature is dope. But the thing is, the camera under the screen on the RP-15 will drive me nuts, it is unusable to me. At least put the mics above the screen so you can't hear the typing. And that little thing has been nagging at my decision to purchase the laptop for a week, leading to a new thought paradigm: If I'm already planning on spending $1500, I might as well spend an extra $600 and double my FPS. 60-120 FPS for $1500, or 120 FPS+? With the PS5/XSX around the corner pushing serious firepower, that extra gpu power would prevent me from feeling regret in a year or two that I didn't go the extra mile when new games are hitting only 45 fps. My desktop is only running a gtx 1050ti as is, with a high power laptop I would skip the RTX 3070 and new monitor I was planning on buying when it dropped. The MAG-15 would be perfect if it wasn't a 2070Q (which my research pegs it as barely better then the 110w 2060, definitely not worth the +$300 over the 1660ti). The MAX-17 has the low webcam and doesn't have dead pixel guarantees/high quality TIM options. MAX-15 has the low webcam. The RP-17 is nearly 6 lbs (Or I would've just settled for that over the RP-15 and would have never gotten this far). I don't know if other retailers allow similar customizable options? I found one other website that had no dead pixel guarantees / high quality TIM but it looks like the weight of the laptop starts at 5.5 lbs. https://xoticpc.com/collections/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks/products/xotic-g51d-pb51df2 Thoughts? Could I get a MAG-15 that meets my demands on extras, but has a 2070 Max-P? This is the first laptop I'm buying. Maybe you can sell me on another laptop similar to the RP-15? [link] [comments] |
USA, budget around $1200 - need a fairly basic laptop for college Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:06 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: around $1200-1500 is the upper limit but it's fairly flexible; I'm in the USA Are you open to refurbs/used? no How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? performance > battery = build > form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? Very, my current macbook Pro is 3.5lbs and I don't want anything heavier. I really like how light and thin the macbook air's are, but I don't want a MBA lol. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 in Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. not really, but the ability to run them would be nice- I play some "basic" games If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mostly play stuff like cuphead, stardew valley, subnautica- so it doesn't need to have a super powerful processor but some gaming support would be good (subnautica runs kinda crappy on my MBP, but other stuff works just fine) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? not really Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I love how smoothly my MBP runs (no viruses!) and I love the OS and trackpad but I don't want a newer MB cause of the lack of ports. I also like how aesthetically pleasing it is, so something that looks "pretty" would be good. I don't really care too much about touchscreen/2in1 but being able to use a pen on the screen would be helpful for some classes. I'd like something with decent battery life to last me throughout the day, but my lecture halls have plugs so it doesn't need to be anything crazy. Basically I want a Macbook Pro with the processing power/ports of a Windows laptop lol. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
