Gaming Latency Requirement Questions Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:14 PM PDT Hey everyone got a couple questions here. Background: so I'm moving to a new house. Don't have any internet equipment—modem, router,—nada. Internet use is going to be pretty standard — Netflix, YouTube, some video calls maybe, and gaming. Never going to have more than 2 or 3 things going on at once. Last, house is pretty small — 1500 square feet, but I plan to connect the gaming pc to our modem with Ethernet. Questions: First of all, we need to decide on an Internet plan. Only option is Comcast. I think 100mbps is our minimum, but the question that I can't seem to find an answer to is: given our usage profile, would increasing to 200 or 300mbps significantly decrease gaming latency/ping? Like, that's not how it works is it? Secondly, building on that, what modem + router combo would you recommend? Quality of modem also affects latency/ping right? Possibilities I was considering:
Third, what other suggestions would you have to help keep gaming internet as stable and fast as possible? Did I miss something? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
CAT6 Grounding - Outdoor Camera Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:10 PM PDT Hello Everyone \I live in Florida and there are lots of lightning/thunder storms here, which is why I'm looking into using properly installed STP vs UTP and calling it a day.* I have a new house build coming up, and I'm going to be installing some UBNT Protect cameras for home security (a few on the outside). I simply want to make sure that I am doing this correctly, so please excuse my ignorance. Been researching for past 3 hours and feel like I have gotten no where, multiple conflicting guides/posts etc. Please reference image below. (image would go here but i can't seem to upload it?, here is link) My network rack will be installed in a closet in a bedroom, so I don't really have any real option to 'ground' the network rack to earth for example with an 8 foot grounding rod and all that. Is there another solution to ground the network rack? From what I have figured out so far, if I use STP CAT6 (#1) and it is connected directly to the switch like in OPTION B (which is grounded via 3-prong normal outlet), then I'm good to go. Correct me please if this is not accurate. However, I would prefer to have a patch panel installed in my rack, to keep things clean, like OPTION A I read that if the (#3) patch panel is grounded, then STP CAT6 (#1) terminates to that, and then (#2) cable I can use normal UTP, to avoid ground loop. My issue is I don't have any real means to ground the patch panel (#3). What are my options here then? What I came up with, is that I can I use a metallic keystone on the patch panel, and another short STP CAT6 (#1) from patch panel to switch, that way it is 'similar' to OPTION B, and the switch is grounding everything. I hope someone is able to clear this up for me, and if I have this all wrong then please advise. Thank you ! [link] [comments] |
CAT5 in house being used only for phone and oddly sorted Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:26 PM PDT Looks like I have CAT5 in my house but is terminated to wall phone jacks. Also not sure why the sorted it by color like this or what the yellow/black bridge is for. I'd like to use it as ethernet. Any ideas why previous owner did this? I've tried powerline adapters but aren't stable so even if it is only CAT5 100mb that would work the one device I want to ethernet to router on a different floor. I don't have or wants a POTS phone line. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT Hopefully what I'm trying to do is possible. I have an ASUS XT8 mesh system. These are tri band with a wireless backhaul, however they have the option for wired backhaul. Since my house is not wired for ethernet, i decided to try MOCA. However, i cannot get it to work. Here's how its connected now without MOCA and it works as a wireless backhaul: COAX FROM WALL ---> MODEM ETHERNET FROM MODEM ---> WAN ON XT8 So how do i turn this into a wired backhaul with the MOCA? Here's what i tried via the instructions that came with the actiontec MOCA adapters: COAX FROM WALL ---> COAX IN ON MOCA ADAPTER COAX FROM TV/STB ON MOCA ADAPTER ---> COAX ON MODEM ETHERNET FROM MODEM ---> WAN ON XT8 ETHERNET ON MOCA ADAPATER ---> LAN ON XT8 When doing this the COAX LED on the MOCA adapter doesn't light up and it's still using the wireless backhaul. What am i doing wrong here?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2020 04:40 AM PDT So I don't know if this belongs in this sub, sorry if doesn't, but just needing advice. I plan to run a Ethernet cable through my two story house (about 3,500 sqft) and the problem I'm having is that my house does not have an attic or basement (Central Florida) so I can't run the cable as easily. Any suggestions? Also on mobile so apologies for the formatting. [link] [comments] |
How to test Ethernet during construction? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:19 AM PDT Hi everyone! I have a new house under construction (first time, woohoo!) and am having Ethernet runs done. I have a pre-drywall inspection coming up and think this is the time to test the Ethernet runs are the right cable type, labeled correctly, and punched down correctly. Has anyone done spot checking like this before? I don't know if I have time to get specific testing tools since the inspection is tomorrow morning. Edit— thank you all for the helpful replies. Went for a walk and learned everything I need to know from what you posted when I got back. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2020 04:44 PM PDT Hey all! I have Xfinity and have had their Gateway Modem/Router combo for a few years without any significant issues. As quarantine has dragged on, I'm realizing that it's WiFi range is really limited to the back two rooms of my apartment, likely due to a lot of concrete in the walls. A WiFi extender hasn't helped, and I'm looking at a router upgrade to increase my coverage. I currently have Xfinity's Performance Pro, and generally get great speeds when in the living room near the router or via Ethernet. What's this sub's recommendation for a router/modem combo (or setup I'm not thinking of) that will be good for home office work and be reliable across all parts of my approx 950sq ft. apt! I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Nighthawk, but was looking for recommendations and or advice before committing to the purchase! Thanks! Edit: oops I'm dumb. I'm on the performance pro plan which is up to 200mpbs. [link] [comments] |
Wall Mounting server Rack questions Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:33 PM PDT I'm mounting a rack (Primecables 9U) in my basement furnace room. The walls are cinderblock. We recently renovated and all the wiring in the house is new. When the electrician did the panel, he also mounted a piece of 1/2" plywood for the rack. I believe the instructions said to use a 3/4" plywood backing. I have a 3/4" piece that would fit where the 1/2" piece is now. So my question is what would be the best option of the following: Is 1/2" plywood strong enough to hold a 40lb rack? Should I take it down and mount the 3/4" plywood instead? Should I layer up the plywood and use both? If I do take down the 1/2" plywood, should I use 2x4's to separate the plywood from the cinderblock? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:42 AM PDT I have a 3600sqft house and will run Ethernet but also wireless for devices. Is the UDM really worth $100 more? Kind of bummed the UDM doesn't support WiFi 6. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
I think I have too many devices Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT So I've been having some connectivity issues for a while now. I have around 25 devices in my house, and some devices randomly aren't able to connect to the internet. For example, the TV wasn't connecting so I rebooted the router(Virgin Media Super Hub 3) and my PC lost connection after that. So I went onto the admin settings and reserved IP for a handful of devices and I'm not sure if it's a coincidence but those devices have not lost connectivity since. So I was thinking it was something wrong with the router. I looked online and found someone with the exact same problem and they were told to get a better router. I also found a lot of people recommending mesh networks here. However I'm not sure whether I should put the router into modem modem mode and then buy a separate router + multiple APs or turn off the WiFi on the SH3 and connect an AP to that and have separate APs around the house. The house isn't that big and I haven't had any range issues with the SH3. If I should get a new router what would you recommend? Budget is around £200. The number of devices may increase as I've been adding new smart home devices. Edit: for anyone that doesn't know the SH3, every thread on every website I've gone to has called it a "shit router, replace it". I didn't have any issues until the number of devices increased. Although 2.4GHz speed wasn't that great despite paying for a lot more, but that's to be expected with 2.4 I guess [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:58 PM PDT I have a CGNM-2250-SHW router which runs Hitron. I went to set up the port forwarding through the Hitron router: https://imgur.com/Ymufsnh I then go onto my netgear router to do the following: Disable DHCP: https://imgur.com/1cbyiFF Disable WAN NAT: https://imgur.com/QULaa9D Now, Im not sure where to go from here. I need Help with Port Forwarding Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:51 PM PDT I've been struggling with port forwarding on my TP-Link Archer c7 router. I'm working on a small Minecraft server for my friends, my siblings, and their friends. I've checked my work countless times and watched too many tutorials on how to port forward from fellow Minecrafters as well as TP-Link Global Support. People in my house (like me and my siblings) can connect to my server through my computer's IPv4 (***.***.*.186:25565) address but people inside or outside my house are unable to connect through my public IP address ( **.**.***.129:25565). This has led me to believe its a problem with my WAN. I have set up a port on the virtual servers tab in NAT Forwarding on my router's page and created an Address Reservation in the DHCP Server tab under Network. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate the help! [link] [comments] |
testing coax connections downstairs/upstairs Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:41 PM PDT my upstairs coax connectors aren't able to get a MoCA signal from downstairs. what is the best way to figure out whether they are two separate networks or whether there is a splitter interfering with the MoCA frequency? Cable modem channel # Question Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:21 PM PDT I'm wondering if my current cable modem is worth upgrading. Cable internet speed : 30Mbps. Single user/Gamer. Cable modem: thomson dcm475 (supports 100Mbps). Router: Asus RT-AC68U The modem channels are only 8x4. Will a modem with a higher channel number reduce the ping in shooters?. The PC is connected via cable to the router which in turn is connected to the above modem. Should I upgrade it regardless given the old hardware?. [link] [comments] |
Router suggestions? Will an ER-X work for me Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:51 PM PDT I'm looking at changing up my setup from a Synology RT2600AC to discrete components of a router and access points. The only part about the ER-X that I'm worried about is VPN performance. I've got an OpenVPN server running on the Synology router for remote access to my network. From what I can tell the ER-X should be able to hardware offloading for L2TP IPSEC I've got a 400/20 cable connection but would like to future proof it for gigabit. Thoughts for a router with a $150 budget to meet my needs? [link] [comments] |
Conflicting fixed up from ISP? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:36 PM PDT Edit: Stupid autocorrect: up=ip My new internet provider gives out fixed IP addresses for each household. It's weird, I know. Over the last couple of weeks, my internet connection has been terrible, and occasionally drops and I need to reboot my router. I am beginning to wonder in someone else in my subnet has put in the wrong IP and is colliding with me. Is there some way to see if that is happening? I can't do a subnet scan on the outside network, and the subnet router is blocked. Ideas? [link] [comments] |
Running Ethernet in Attic above Aluminum Soffit Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT Hello All, I have a POE camera that I have mounted on the corner of my house mounted to the soffit but I need to run ethernet to it. The problem I found after I drilled the hole is that I cannot fish the ethernet to it because of beams that box in that section. However, I could run ethernet farther down and use a magnet to caress the ethernet over to that corner under the soffit while the ethernet is on the attic side of the soffit. Is there anything I should be concerned about with it? Is it a bad idea? I have cat5e riser solid core cable. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Home networking advice for an upper floor, and a hot attic Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:18 PM PDT When we bought our home 15 years ago, we asked the builders to put RJ45 in. They did a botch job on it, and it's time to fix that. Today, I have all my switches, router, cable modem etc in my basement. There is an unlabeled RJ45 cable going through the wall above my basement foundation, running up the external siding of my home, then back into an upstairs bedroom where it's terminated into a single wall plate. I have no idea if this is CAT5, CAT5E - it's definitely not outdoor rated, as the plastic sheathing is starting to crumble. It's time to replace it. While I'm at it, I'd also like to put some cable drops in another bedroom. Initially, I thought I could replace the unknown crumbling cable with outdoor rated CAT6 - and instead of terminating it in the wall, run it to the attic, where I'd put a POE router, then run two more CAT6 cables down the walls to each of the bedrooms I want network drops in. Then I realized my attic gets REALLY hot and REALLY cold (New England weather), so having electronics up there probably isn't the best idea. So I'm wondering what the best way to approach this is going to be. The bedroom only has one cable drop in it now, I don't want to try running two cables up from the basement. I could just connect a switch to the existing, re-wired wall socket, then run a second cable back into the wall to the other bedroom, but that seems messy. Is there a better way to approach this? (Have I even explained it clearly enough!?) [link] [comments] |
What's the difference between multicast DNS repeater and reflector? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:59 PM PDT So in order to access IoT devices from different VLANs (eg. Chromecast), you need to be able to pickup multicast packets Now I see more often than not people mention using the mDNS-repeater, but occasionally see mDNS-reflector mentioned What is the difference between these two options? Want to replace my Spectrum Wave 2 router, any good alternatives? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:19 PM PDT I just moved and the Spectrum tech replaced my old router with the new Wave 2 and from what I gather, it is entirely not possible to access the router GUI. The only thing you are able to edit is the network name and password. It is a necessity to access the fine details of my router. So now comes be finding new routers. We have Spectrum gigabit service, is the Ubiquiti AmpliFi Alien compatible? Anybody else run into this issue? What router did you choose? [link] [comments] |
Weird Ethernet Drop Out Problem Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:27 PM PDT Edit: So it turned out to be a well-known issue with Thunderbolt 3 docks that support pass-through charging. The 2 Reddit posts below document the issue pretty well. Nothing's wrong with my 10 dollar Tp-link switch! https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/an3nyf/pass_though_power_usb_type_c_hubs_cause_broadcast/ https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/ckpaem/apple_thunderbolt_monitor_kills_network/ Hi Everyone, So I have 2 Ethernet outlet next to my desk and they are all connected to a cheap 5 port gigabit switch (worked perfectly fine for the past 5 years). I've been using one port for my desktop for the last 6 months and everything works fine. Recently I started working at my new job and the company sent over a Macbook pro and a monitor with a built in thunderbolt 3 dock. I figured since the dock has a Ethernet port I might as well connect the laptop rather than through wireless for better connection quality in meetings. Now here's the weird thing that happens - once the laptop goes to sleep, my desktop would also lose connectivity. I would ping my router's IP but it would just indicate timeout or not reachable. However, once I wake my laptop up from sleep, everything on my desktop would be normal again. This only happens when the laptop goes to sleep, if I turn it off it would not affect my desktop. Do you guys have any clue about what the cause of this issue might be? Could it be a faulty switch or faulty wiring? [link] [comments] |
Randomly can't connect to 5GHz Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:04 PM PDT I recently bought an Asus PCE-AC68 and I have been having issues connecting to my 5GHz wifi (Asus AC86U router). I've tried the latest drivers along with some others suggested online but they don't seems to work either. I'm currently connected to the 5GHz on the latest drivers but I know when I restart my PC it will have issues again. Whenever I restart my PC I can't connect to the 5GHz instantly. It tends to give me the "Unable to connect to this network" error. I connect to the 2.4GHz instead which works fine. 5 minutes later I try the 5GHz connection again and it connects with no issues. It seems to have a higher chance of connecting to the 5GHz if I connect to the 2.4GHz first. Other devices on my house can connect to the 5GHz fine. I previously used an Archer T6E which also had some problems connecting to 5GHz but I gave that to my brother and its worked fine straight away. So it might possibly be my pc having the issues. Any fixes? [link] [comments] |
force telus to connect to specific fortnite server? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:51 PM PDT Recently I believe Telus has made some changes to how they route traffic to specific servers. This has caused my ping from Fortnite to go from 20ms to around 80ms and it is very noticeable. Basically, I'm supposed to be connecting to the Oregon server but the game instead connects me to the Northern Californian server instead. If I use a program like ExitLag (which forces my ethernet connection to be routed to the right server), then my ping is fine. Only issue with ExitLag is that its a 3 day trial.. Is there a way to force telus to connect me to Oregon servers instead of Cali servers? [link] [comments] |
question on cat6 gigabit speeds. Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:22 PM PDT I've observe something very weird. Maybe someone with more experience can help me. EDIT: to make it easier to understand issue downstairs computer connected via cat6 by 5ft near cable modem + switch is getting consistently better speedtest results. upstairs computer on the 3rd floor which is connected by ~60ft of cat6 wire getting worse speedtest results. Any idea what would cause this? I ran same host and also ran buffer bloat test on dsl.. Always getting better results computer near network gear and the computer upstairs is getting initial spikes of 700mbps and droop down to 300mpbs. Is it possible the quality gets worse at 60ft? I can still hit 700mbps off peak hours on spectrum but weird that I am getting inconsistent results at home. both via intel NIC upstairs comp @ https://imgur.com/YTnZXg5 [link] [comments] |
