What's the most unexpected thing that caused a computer problem? Posted: 30 May 2020 06:12 PM PDT I just spent half a day replacing a motherboard in a laptop because of a corrupt BIOS and the BIOS not being publicly available online. But when I put it back together, it would just flash the caps lock light weakly for a quarter of the second and then nothing would happen. Fan would spin a tiny bit when I plugged the power in but not when I pressed the power button. I thought it was a bad power button at first because the ribbon cable lock was a bit loose. I tried it with both motherboards, same thing. I tried it with/without bios battery, with/without ram, same thing. It stumped me so I put it aside for a few days. Then I remembered Sorin's tutorials from electronics repair school on YouTube where he always takes the board out alone to troubleshoot outside of the laptop. So I removed the board from the laptop and unscrewed the power button panel and the status LED panel from the laptop and plugged the ribbon cables directly into the board. And I plugged it in, hit the power button, and what the hell? It started perfectly. It turns out one of the cables to the USB and audio daughter board was preventing it from starting. There were two cables to the daughter board. It would start fine with the first cable plugged in but not the second. I was just amazed that the thing that I never expected to cause the problem (and furthermore both cables were plugged/unplugged at the same time because they're right beside each other) was the one stopping the whole computer from starting. So I would like to ask, in your experience, what is the most unexpected thing that caused a computer problem? [link] [comments] |
