Apartment has ethernet ports galore, but patch panel setup is a bit confusing

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 01:16 PM PDT

So my apartment is wired up with ethernet ports and they're connected to a patch panel with 4 twisted pairs from Cat 5e cables. See pictures: https://imgur.com/a/qSUzvOH

It looks like the patch panel is treating them like phone lines... What do I do with this? Thanks!

    Ethernet Slower than WiFi

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I've been struggling with this for a few weeks now so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm fortunate enough to work for a company that is allowing me to work from home. The only problem I am having is that my remote work setup needs to be connected via ethernet. For some reason the Ethernet speeds coming from my router are substantially slower than wifi. I'm getting ~400Mbps download with wifi and ~70Mbps with ethernet. I need a stable connection over 100Mbps in order for my remote workstation to be usable.

Through a visit with a technician from my ISP (Spectrum) we determined that I'm receiving the speeds I should be through Spectrum and that the signal is good all the way up to the point where it reaches the router. When the work from home order started I upgraded my internet and purchased an ASUS RT-AC68U to replace an old Apple Airport router. When I started having these Ethernet issues with the ASUS router I contacted support who needed 24-48 hours to reply. I panicked a little and went and bought a Netgear Nighthawk 7000P because I just wanted a router that was going to work ASAP. To my dismay I experienced the exact same issue. Same speeds for both WiFi and Ethernet on both routers.

I've been through support with both router manufactures and my ISP. I've also done quite a bit of online research though I'll admit my knowledge of home networks is pretty minimal. So far this is what I've done:

    - tested the Ethernet with three different cables (two cat5e, one cat6)

    - tested every port on the back of each router

    - restored factory settings and confirmed with support from each manufacturer that I have the correct firmware

    - enabled jumbo packets

    - tested on three different devices (a MacBook Pro, a windows desktop & a PS4)

    - disabled QoS

As of now I have the ASUS router connected again and plan on keeping it and returning the Netgear. I've seen a couple of potential fixes online but don't entirely know how to go about doing them.

    - one is updating the networks drivers. Is this the same as firmware for the router. Not quite sure what this means or how to go about doing this.

    - disable large send offload (LSO), can't find this option anywhere

    - alter duplex settings, haven't seen any mention of this in the router UI portal and wouldn't know how to change them anyway

    - disable IPv6, not sure where this is either

Thank you so much for reading this lengthy post. Can't say enough how much I'd appreciate any insight whatsoever. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to reply ASAP.

Running cat6 from basement to attic

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:37 AM PDT

Just moved into a newly built house. I had the foresight to have a company come prewire for Ethernet during construction but I underestimated how many drops I should have done in the attic for exterior POE cameras. My network rack is in the basement, so I'll need to run from the basement up through the main floor and into the attic. I went up in the attic yesterday and am feeling overwhelmed.

I bought a spade bit set for my drill and some fiberglass fish rods. I'm planning to start in the attic - locate an interior wall and drill down. Any tips on drilling up from the basement in the same location that I started in the attic?? Or any tips or advice in general on how to tackle this are appreciated!

Where to buy stuff to make cat6 cables?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:07 PM PDT

The AT&T guy left a bunch of cat6 cable rolled up in my garage cabinet that is extra and not doing anything. I want to use it to make some cables as I'm upgrading my network.

I don't know what i will need, can someone help, and recommend me a place to purchase it? I assume amazon is THE best for this kind of stuff.

Using a Fiberoptic cable for Backhaul

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 03:54 PM PDT

I've tried to search this topic but I haven't found a post that asks this question exactly. I'm probably just missing it. I think this is a pretty simple question tho.

Anyhow, in my house I've setup a switch and run Cat6 all over. The ISP provides a wifi router that is just meh. I bought an Orbi 3 pack awhile back because it was cheap but haven't installed it yet. The house is of a size and layout that 2 of the Mesh routers will cover it nicely.

Not too long ago, I built a metal building I've been using as a shop. The building is approximately 150' from the house, maybe 200' from where I'd want to install the closest Orbi node. My question is, can I lay a cable from that Orbi node, between the house and shop, and install the 3rd Orbi in the shop as a wifi accesspoint?

I assume the answer is yes, and if so, what kind of cable should I lay? Can I lay fiber with a transceiver at either end, then just patch into the Orbi's with cat6 cables? I know fiber is probably overkill, especially with the quality of internet we get out here in the boonies. But overkill is underrated and I don't mind spending a bit of extra coin to go first class or have some future proofing. I guess what I'm concerned about is the ability to use a fiber optic cable for backhaul between the mesh nodes. Will that work?

Blocking Torrents DPI style, looking for hardware or OS (x-post)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:33 PM PDT

    Hi.

I've been using an Edgerouter Lite to do DPI based torrent blocking for our guest network. We purchased an RB4011 (MikroTik) and none of the layer7 based P2P blocking works since most clients are encrypted, and the P2P option was removed the newer versions of Router OS.

We run a public guest network which was frequently receiving DMCA notices (go figure, free 100mbps internet in a zone with dsl and dialup). We use QOS and what not, so the ER-L doesn't have enough OOMF for this, we considered an ER-4 but that just seemed a little low end too, so we ultimately went for the RB4011. I'd like to use the ER-L elsewhere now, and was wondering if you guys had any solutions to this. We're open to using OPNSense, VyOS, PfSense, etc. We're currently at a loss though since google-fu does not bring up anything.

    We know some clients use

    Bittorrent

    uTorrent

    qBittorrent

and usual sites like tpb, kat, etc. Right now we've set it to detect users torrenting and close all dst 1025-65535 for 24 hours. That's not the best solution though since it breaks discord, whatsapp and more. (Yeah I understand they're breaking a rule, but I feel like we should be able to handle this another way.)

has anyone found a solution to this?

Why do some home networks have wireless routers if they already have proper access points setup?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT

    Hey ya'll,

Quarantine has led some of us to new hobbies and down rabbit holes...well mine was setting up a proper home network / lab.

I've done some research on the jargon and technology, watched a few YT videos, etc. However, I'm confused as to why some home network builder have wireless routers when they have proper individual equipment (switch, router, aps).

Wireless routers are described as a "chimera" of networking equipment. They're convenient but not really great at any single task. The only reason I could think of would be to reduce traffic on an AP.

DOCSIS 3.0 vs 3.1 gaming latency?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 09:09 AM PDT

100/10 connection Comcast. I'm wired directly with ethernet

Recently got an edgerouter x, and I'm using QOS to reduce bufferbloat, and it's generally just a great router. A+ across the board on DSL Reports

I'm the only user in my house. Will DOCSIS 3.1 help at all to further reduce my latency? Or is this mainly a bandwidth benefit? Currently using a Motorola ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

Any other settings or anything else worth doing or am I pretty much at the end of what I can do to reduce my latency?

Could I use an older router as a network extender?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:46 AM PDT

I currently have optimum and I have an old Verizon router I purchased when I had the service. The main router is downstairs and my computer upstairs struggles to connect to the network. I found a coax running through and out my wall that is not being used and is connect to the main network but I want to know a good way to go from coax to Ethernet is there an adaptor for that? Would it be safe to just use an adaptor or could I use my old router as an adaptor? Thanks in advanced

Found some cat 5e in my house but can't get it to work. Question about 568a/b

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 03:43 PM PDT

I live in a 2-story house and have 4 Google Wifi pucks but because of the long distance between the primary router from the other mesh pucks, I'd really like to hard-wire at least one of the downstairs pucks.

I found an ethernet jack downstairs and tracked it to the attic, and then I believe I tracked it further to one of my FROG attics running into the box on the side of the house. I figured it was for an old DSL installation sometime in the past. I did what any red-blooded Murican would do and cut it in half then put an rj45 connector on it, 568B style.

When I hooked up my known-working cable tester to it I got absolutely nothing. I'm guessing it's not impossible that due to the horrible visibility in the attic that I could be mistaken about which wire I cut but if, say the wire is 568A on the other end, would the cable tester show no lights? I guess I could snip it again to try a 568A this time but don't know if it's worth even trying.

    TLDR;
If a cat5 cable is 568A on one end and 568B on the other end, would a cable tester show nothing at all?

    ¿experiences with ISP customer support?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Well I cannot say I'm a pro in networking, I have barely the minimum knowlegde to set up my own home networks and was everything learned trought internet and some lessons/questions to my teachers in a computer science degree I'm doing now.

but,at least for me,the times I have to call an ISP (for some reasons I can't explain now I talked several times to more or less 70% of all the ISP in my country technical support) the people who attends (that usally are not just comercial guys, they send me to a "technicians" department) I just have the impresion that most of them have zero knowledge about networking, not knowing even the most basic things about how THEIR own ISP operates their network.

so I was curious if that's something that only happens in my country (spain) or is common across all globe.

to put as example I'll share my last experience with an ISP "technician"

I called the last ISP I contracted, a company that uses CG-NAT to workout the actual lack of ipv4 adresses, because they have a "premium internet" service that allows you to take an actual public (dynamic) IP and quit the CG-NAT for 1€/month more

so when I called them,I told the lady that I wanted to quit the CG-NAT service, and then she said me that the 1€ fee was in fact for turning on the CG-NAT,not for turning off (obviously she didn't understand nothing about what was cg-nat and how it works),and then I have a 3-minute discusion with him about how paying to have cg-nat was instead something crazy and ask him many times to take me out the cg-nat,and after that 3 minute she hang up.

after that I called again and the next "technician" that attended me I just sayed that I wanted the "premium internet" service and was activated in few seconds.

    Gigabit NETGEAR modem longevity

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:32 PM PDT

Hi all, thanks in advance for the help!

Looking at finding a modem compatible with xfinity's 1 Gbps plan (runs Docsis 3.1 and has the capacity to carry 1 Gbps) and have narrowed it down to one of NETGEAR's CM series (namely the CM1000, CM1100, or even CM1200) or the Arris SB8200. All are compatible with my ISP and plan as stated by my ISP.

I'm wondering about the longevity of these modems, particularly the NETGEAR series. I've read that firmware updates can force you to reset the modem to factory settings and mess with your connection, making it unusable after 6-18 months. Any experience or advice on which modem to buy, and any additional advice on what router to pair it with in a 750 square foot, open concept apartment? We have a coaxial port in the wall. Thank you!

    ER-X vs Mikrotik Hex

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:23 PM PDT

Bought a wifi router recently(Asus) and it turns out that some features like traffic analyzer and QOS involves some data collection since those modules are from Trend Micro. Thinking of buying an actual router for QOS and maybe dual-wan.

Im on a dsl connection 15 down 1 up. Internet is a bit slow in our country. Fiber has not reached our place yet.

The Hex in some stores can be bought for less than 15USD than the ER-X.

    Some considerations

    • Beginner in terms of networking knowledge. I remember I was able to set-up basic firewall(iptables) before.
    • Security, QOS and dual-wan are the things that I wanted to do.
    • I can do CLI but I also have kids as well so I don't want to spend days working on it. If it has a good GUI or wizards then thats a plus in case I want it set-up quick.
    • I don't know if its important but I live in a tropical country. Its around 30C right now. Hopefully these routers don't have heat issues.

I think I may have just regretted purchasing an extender

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:22 PM PDT

I read somewhere you can use sockets like these (mine is just like the one in that image and it's right near my PC), to get the best possible internet connection using something called MoCA, but I have no idea how expensive it would be or how I'd set it up. I found cables that have a port that enters the socket and another that's ethernet but I doubt it's as simple as plugging one end in the socket and the other in my PC.

Your experience with TP-Link EAPs ?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:33 AM PDT

Hi! I'm soon going to be moving to my own place and I'm starting to think about networking. I have a very simple setup, just an old server running Unraid, couple of IOT devices, Homebridge, Dockers, Sonos speakers, all the usual beginner stuff. I wanted to launch my self into Ubiquity gear for semi-pro performance and reasonable price, but it might be overkill to be fair. Only 2 people, couple phones, PC and console.

I came across TP-Link's Omada series. Seems more than good enough for my needs and price looks very attractive. I would probably go for an EAP v3, maybe an outdoor AP later down the line, controller running in a VM, and routing still handled by my old ASUS AC-RT51U with OpenWrt. The whole switching handled by a cheap Gigabit Netgear Managed switch to retain WLAN capabilities.

Questions: - TP-Link EAP: anyone has some ? How does it perform ? - ASUS router: old but sufficient ? Anything else to recommend that just does routing and nothing else ? - Specifically regarding Sonos, would streaming audio over AirPlay stress the router, or will it be directly routed from the AP to the speaker by the switch ? (Still not an expert with layers, routing etc)

Thanks a lot, I stay open to any suggestions!

Edit: as you can probably notice, I don't really want an all in one solution. Reading mixed feedback about the Ubiquity DreamMachine made me re-question this. With my potential setup I'd have separate devices for modem, routing, switching and WiFi broadcasting.

Unable to connect to some online servers

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Hello, this is my first time posting here so forgive me if this post is inappropriate or anything.

Recently, I've been having issues with connecting to certain game servers: Epic Games, Riot, Xbox Live. The speed of my internet connection is not the problem, it's quite fast, and other machines connected to the same Internet can connect to these servers.

I'm unable to identify what the problem is as I'm not very fluent in network troubleshooting. Unblocking these applications on my firewall doesn't fix them at all and I'm still unable to connect. I once tried to fix my connection to Xbox Live by messing around with Teredo on my PC before, I changed some things but I don't know how to reset them. Now I can't connect to a lot of games and game launchers, Steam works fine but some games in it don't work as well.

Below is what my IP config looks like when I type the command in cmd. I'm not sure if anything is wrong with it but I think it used to look different and less chaotic. Please help me identify the problem and possibly fix it, this issue has been bothering me since January.

Single 24-port PoE swithch or non-PoE switch with PoE switches stacked underneath?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:31 AM PDT

Looking for some advice for my home lab/network. I currently use a rented router/modem from my ISP, but I have a Motorola MB8600 modem leading to a EdgeRouter4 I am getting ready to install. I will also be wiring my house for CAT6. I plan on doing a fair amount of subnetting and having a few VLANs to separate different parts of my network and my home lab.

One of the things I plan on setting up a VLAN for is a security system with 5 or so wired cameras. I am trying to pick which switch(es) to go with (I would like to stay with Ubiquiti) and I am stuck between a single 24-port PoE switch or a non-PoE switch with an 8-port or so PoE switch stacked beneath the 24 port switch. The reason I am leaning to the non-PoE switch with a few smaller switches stacked beneath is due to the number of drops I am running, I already am going to be coming close to maxing out the 24 ports on one switch. I have 18 drops running to rooms not including my servers and what not.

Any input as to one or the other?

    Way to improve wireless connection

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Hey everyone, big time networking newb here. Tried reading some of the guides, but I need a ELI5.

My situation is I am trying to play some online games over my Verizon Fios router (Sea of Thieves, COD). The problem is, I am using a wireless adapter on my computer and the router is literally on the complete opposite end of the house leading to some less than optimal conditions.

I've read some things about wifi extenders using your electrical outlet, but I really don't understand and I notice that those products never mention a company router like Fios. Would I need to buy a non-Fios branded router as well or can I use the Fios one?

Thank you in advance for patience and answers!

    Cheap router for 200Mbps (Apartment)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:52 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I will be signing up for fios 200Mbps and want to provide my own router instead of renting/purchasing from Verizon. I'll be just me in a small first floor apartment, so the distance (?) and number of devices on the router can be pretty low. It'll be internet only and I'll 3 personal devices on the WiFi. Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheap router (under $50) based on this? Thanks!
