After 6 years, it's finally time to upgrade my bacon.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:42 AM PDT

I bought my OPO in July 2014 during my trip to the USA. I have been using that phone ever since. The two accessories I bought for the phone were a Rhinoshield screen protector in August 2014 and a cheap $1 black plastic case from a local store. My OPO has been through A LOT.

I have no idea how many times I've dropped it, spilled stuff on it, been out in a storm with it, flushed it (and then washed it with soap and water) and had it been grabbed and toyed with by the wolves I worked with for my PhD.

A few months ago, I dropped it down the spiral staircase in office and it fell 2 floors - that seemed to kill the mic (probably fixable if I open it up, honestly). NBD - I've been using it with my BT Headset for the past few months - I have them on most of the time for music and videos anyway. Last week, while I was gaming on my PC, I absent-mindedly picked the phone up to check my messages - it slipped out of my hands (one edge of the case is split, so if you grab the phone a specific way, the split edge bends and the phone drops), bounced off the desk and hit the floor at an angle. Now the bottom 1 cm of the touchscreen has no touch response (display still works). Nothing a forced auto-rotate app and a bunch of using the phone upside down can't fix. Worst case, I can always connect my BT mouse.

But let's be real here. This magical $350 bacon has served me extremely well. Other than having sub-optimal battery life (has absolutely nothing to do with the 4 years of near constant Ingress and then a year of Asphalt 8, I swear!) and no official software support (Lineage OS FTW, btw), the phone is STILL usable, 6 years later (assuming you have the patience). After much contemplation, about 6 months of convincing from the SO & a €200 cash gift for my birthday, I figured it's time finally buy a new phone.

I started researching phones a few weeks ago and was quite disappointed to see the direction in which the OnePlus I loved so much is heading. I was looking forward to getting another flagship-killer, but found only flagships. "You either die a -hero..." and all that I guess...

I don't think I'll be buying a brand-new OnePlus phone. On the one hand, directly supporting this nonsensical trend in the industry doesn't feel right and on the other, I can see why this trend exists. It's honestly hard to convince myself to shell out €900 for a "flagship" phone when coming from a device that has not only served me exceptionally well, but had an amazing moral philosophy. Back in the day, the OPO was well over 35% cheaper than devices it was competing with - that's what made me choose this phone.

But that doesn't mean I'm not buying a OnePlus. They're still really good devices, albeit with, IMO, a worse pricing (and moral) strategy. I found a few-week-old "used" OnePlus 7T Pro for €620 (incl. shipping) on our local second hand website. Putting the cash I received to good use, the 7T Pro costs me €420 - squarely in line with what I'd be completely willing to pay for a "flagship-killer" device with a similar price-feature ratio as the original OPO and with a similar level of undercutting.

I should have my new phone on Monday. I wonder whether the 7T Pro will last as long. I hope it lasts longer! Perhaps I'll post here again in several years raving about how well the 7T Pro has lasted and how everyone was over-thinking the popup camera. Hopefully the 7T Pro will have the same kind of ridiculously amazing ROM support from the community. The bacon has set the bar real high for me haha!

If you made it up to here, thanks for reading I guess ^^

I've already ordered a Rhinoshield for the front and a dbrand Tear-down skin for the back. I'm not sure what case I should get. The Rhinoshield bumper and Spigen Hybrid seem tempting (both allow me to showcase the tear-down skin). The dbrand Grip isn't available for the OP7TP and I'm not sure if the skin can go OVER the Rhinoshield Solid Suit. Any opinions?

I'll go look up how to root the phone till I have some replies here ;)

If you haven't looked into customizing your 7P, please do so

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I've had the 7Pro for about 8months now and immediately I loved the freedom of the OS from what I was used to with iOS.

Then I flashed the international rom and enabled developer options and enjoyed my phone much more with things like .5x animation speed, etc..

But then today I disabled the status bar and forced 90hz system-wide via adp, and set the smallest width to 450dp in Dev settings and it almost feels like I have a whole new phone. It truly feels like I'm taking advantage of both the full screen and the ram of the phone.

I was set on keeping this phone for at least 2 years, but this might make it 3-4.

I implore everyone even somewhat tech savvy to look into making your OnePlus phone truly your own.

We need more options for Horizon Light

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:51 PM PDT

Recently I upgraded from an OP3 to an 8 and it is a big upgrade in every way except the lack of a notification LED. I thought Horizon Light was the LED replacement but it only pulses once. There should be more options like repeat interval and brightness. I've seen some apps but they light up the sides and the notifications/fingerprint spot. It would be nice to have the light only with a dim pulse.

    OnePlus 7Pro performance issues

    Posted: 02 May 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have a OnePlus 7 Pro (256/8) and have been enjoying it for about a year now. I play a fair amount of games and have noticed the past few months that the phone is actually struggling in the performance department quite a lot.

Although it runs the games fine and they are playable, the drop in frames (feels like 24-30fps) is significant. I've tried messing with the default settings for display resolution and refresh rate, clearing space off my storage (using just 76gb now, 180gb free), clearing apps list and whatnot. My dev options says ram usage average is 61%.

I dusted off my older OnePlus 5 and downloaded two games for testing, "Maplestory M" and "Call of Duty Mobile". It was immediately apparent that the OP5 was actually running both these games significantly smoother... Note that the OP5 isn't factory reset, it's just as used and full of apps from my last time with it.

I went as far as factory resetting my OP7 Pro but to no avail, the same performance loss persists. Gaming/fnatic mode make zero difference.

    Disinfecting new phone?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:46 PM PDT

This is going to sound real silly.....but I just ordered an OP 7T from the website. I've been waiting for it to come in stock and had to act quickly........I'm going to assume they're sending small shipments from Hong Kong to the US still and that that's why they keep randomly appearing in small quantities here and there and then selling out again........what in the world should I do when my package arrives? I don't want to go spraying a brand new phone with Lysol

    Charging cables..fast charging

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:08 PM PDT

Can someone explain the difference and what i need? I have several of the fast charging blocks for my OP 6Ts. The cables are pretty short, i have a couple aftermarket 6 foot USB C cables that will plug into the block, they USED to "charge rapidly" but dont anymore.

Would like to find a couple 6 footers that will be compatible with the fast charge OP charging block.

How to Prevent OP from Killing Apps in Background

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:27 PM PDT

Hello Friends. I drive for Uber and Lyft. My International OnePlus 7 Pro keeps killing my Uber and Lyft Driver apps. Especially, when they are running in the background.

I've tried the following to no avail (1) In battery "Don't Optimize" and (2) I "Lock" the apps in recent app screen.

Any other suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Can I please get older/newer wallpaper on my 7 pro?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 10:24 AM PDT

I LOVE all OnePlus wallpaper, just sad that I don't have access to all of them. Yes, I can get them from Google but then they aren't live.

Can you please give us OnePlus Wallpaper from all the newer & older generations on our devices? That would be so awesome. I am so used to Apple keep updating me with their latest wallpapers, regardless of the generation of my device, and I would love if OnePlus did the same.

Cannot sign into OnePlus account on 8 Pro

    Posted: 02 May 2020 03:51 PM PDT

I was looking through the settings on my phone, and I encountered a bit of an issue. In the settings, under the accounts menu, there is a OnePlus Account listed. I tap on it, and the next screen has a sign in page. You can either enter your phone number/email and password, or on the bottom of the screen, there are 2 icons to sign in with 3rd party accounts (Google or Facebook). since i created my Oneplus account on the website using the "sign in with google" option, I tried tapping the Google "G" icon on the bottom of the screen. nothing happened, except the page blinked slightly, like it was trying to open something, but couldnt. I tried tapping on the Facebook logo, just to see what would happen, and a new page came up asking me to sign in with my FB info. So it seems that the Google sign in is broken, at least on my phone. I called Oneplus support, and they were unable to help me fix it, and escalated to their tier 2. who knows how long that will take, so I thought i'd come here for help. Below is a link to a screen recording

The way Oneplus handle the screen issue's now will decide they're fate in the "flagship" space, (imo)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:57 PM PDT

I just wanna preface this post with the fact that I currently own a standard 8 with an almost perfect screen. I have a slight green tint (at a certain low brightness) with no uniformity issues. I've also owned the oneplus one & oneplus 3 since the beginning.

I really wanted a pro model but opted for the 8 due to the fact that I think all the issues are due to oneplus over clocking sub par Samsung oled displays.

Whilst I'm personally happy with my 8, I genuinely feel the upset and anger from people who received a faulty unit. I could live with a slight tint after paying £600 but could not if I paid £8-900.

Whilst Samsung they're selves and other manufacturers have reported the same green tint issues as oneplus, the majority will still buy they're phones due to popularity where as oneplus relies soley on they're medium fan base which after this latest launch has likely dwindled by a fare amount and rightly so.

My point is if oneplus want to stay in the flagship space then the oneplus 9 must be flawless in terms of the display, no second grade displays and shit QA but the best of the best. If they can't provide this then they should go back to the cheap prices and label of the original flagship killer instead over charging and under delivering.

I would happily upgrade to a 9 if they over commit and prove them selves to be worthy of a flagship title but as it stands rn they are at the bottom of the pile despite the specs of the 8 series.

If I didn't need to immediately upgrade from my G6 I wouldnt have given my money to oneplus with all the uncertainty going on but this could very well be my last oneplus phone. I was eyeing up the S20+ but decided to give Samsung the🖕due to EU getting the exynos version.

The flagship space in the EU is very dry rn and oneplus really missed a big opportunity to take it over with the failed launch of the 8 series.

New Phone Suggestions?? Apple or Android??

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:51 PM PDT

Hi y'all so I have not upgraded my phone from like last 5 years so I am ready to make a huge upgrade again with all future proof specs to last another 3-5 years easily.

So I was not an iPhone guy my first phone was HTC and then Sony Xperia (which I had 5 yrs ago) so the sony also broke down like an year or 2 ago.

And then I got a chance to use an old iPhone 6 plus which my brother gave me, tbh straight off I was missing the extra features that I had on andorid but I adapted to the iOS , also have an iPad at home.

So right now the situation is even the iPhone 6 plus has died and I have literally no phone using an old ass phone to run calls and whatsapp only and I wanna upgrade ASAP.

I am ready to spend 800-900US Dollars ( Around 60000 - 75,000k INR ) maybe a 1K$ aswell if it's really worth it on the phone . What I am looking in a phone is Decent screen size with good quality screen, long term reliability without issues , great ass camera ( really tempted to get iphone jus for camera cause they are the best) performance and resale value.

SO Currently I am really inclined towards buying an one plus 8 pro but due to lockdown in India and screen issues on it , it's prolly gonna be another month before I can grab it .

And I just heard news about the iPhone 12 leaks the phone looks a little better than iphone 11 finally ( I hated the big notch on 11 pro) and also the price seems lower than before I am interested in the iPhone 12 plus or iphone 12 pro max version (because of the large display) But I am really unsure if Apples gonna keep the same price as of US in India for their phones or increase it by 20-30% in Indian market.

If the prices are same as US I can barely afford to buy the 12 max version but if prices are increased to above 80k INR then it will be out of my budget by alot .

I am Inclined towards the iPhone 12 because of their brand Value and quality in India but if I wait and turns out prices are hiked in India again my wait will be worthless.

So I need your help and opinions because there's still 3-4 months left for launch of iphone 12 and I don't wanna wait that. Long if the prices are just too high can I couldn't buy it and I need a phone ASAP aswell but my main concern is if rather wait for the best phone quality wise and camera wise which i can use for 3-5 years.

    Any Suggestions???

    Transparent menu bar in background

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:17 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Having recently bought a OnePlus 6, I've noticed a transparent menu bar in the background that I can't seem to use or get rid of.

I've attempted to take a screenshot of it, but it doesn't appear, so have taken a picture of the phone and highlighted the area.

I have done a complete Android factory reset and I can still see the menu bar, even on the initial set up screen.

Admittedly the icons are hard to see in the picture, but I hope you will still be able to see what I mean!

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Extremely important information for OnePlus 8 Pro owners with tint issues : MUST READ

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:21 AM PDT

I've has a discussion with the OnePlus support and the person told me something that I feel we didn't truely understand here, me first.

I told him I have the basic screen issues we see everywhere, he then asked me if I updated to 10.5.5, which I did, and still have the issues. He then told me to get a replacement, because 10.5.5 WAS THE FIX. If your phone is still flawed after updating to 10.5.5 YOU MUST ASK FOR A REPLACEMENT. That's what he told me.

So please, if you're on 10.5.5 and you're having even small green/red tint issues, DC dimming on or off, get a replacement fast, your screen is flawed. This is not a software issue anymore, 10.5.5 WAS the fix they promised, it's not coming on a later update, this was the update. The screen is flawed means even if right now you only have small issues, it could very well turn into massive issues in a few weeks/months when you're out of replacement zone and maybe when you'll be out of warranty in 1+ year. 10.5.5 apparently fixed the issues for many people, as he told me.

I thought it was very important to say that because I still see many people thinking that fixes are on the way, it was really unclear. Fixes are already done.

    4K 60fps framerate differs slightly

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:51 PM PDT

So I shot some video with my OnePlus 7 Pro, at 4K 60fps, but when I bring them into Premiere Pro, the framerate slightly differs depending on the clip. From 59.41fps to 60.03fps. Any reason this happens?

Advice on purchasing a OnePlus 8

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:06 PM PDT

I want to upgrade from my iPhone X to the OnePlus 8 but I have few worries before I do it. Some people mentioned to me that the normal OnePlus 8 doesn't have the display issues that the pro does, do the screens get burn in though? I use my phone a lot, like 7-8 hours screen on time a day. And will there be a price cut any time soon? Like next 2 months or so? Last question would be how the affirm works for it, does it bring down your credit score if all payments are made on time? Thanks in advance!

So frustrated at these display issues....

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:01 AM PDT

And I don't even own the phone! I want to buy it but I'm just holding out

I don't understand how OP can make this big song and dance about having the best phone screen, with super accurate colours, and then release the phone and have completely incorrect colours! They must have had these displays tested - maybe they tested the panels outside of the phone?

I reckon they've got a bad batch of displays. I'm wondering if people can post their build dates below, and whether or not they have issues - with a picture if possible.

Now, I don't know how big a "batch" is, but if the panels are bad, then OP should be saying to Samsung, "this isn't good enough". Let's be honest, this doesn't reflect very well on Samsung either

If it's NOT the panels, and it's SW, get it fixed. If its not the SW, then OP must be breaking them as their installing them in the phones?! That won't be resolved in a hurry

Switched to the 7T from my OG Pixel. Love the phone but there's one thing bothering me.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:47 PM PDT

The adaptive brightness on this phone is infuriating compared to the Pixel.

    • The brightness takes forever to readapt. I always find it faster to pull down the quick settings and adjust it manually.

    • it does not apply on the lockscreen a lot of the time. I have to unlock the phone and I keep blinding myself at night and in the mornings when I'm checking my notifications.

    • The brightness sometimes falls to 25% for no reason and just sticks there and I have to manually readjust it.

This is the only gripe I have with this phone. I just wish it works the same as the Pixel.
