    How to maintain Linux install

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:02 PM PDT

Hi all, fairly new Linux user here..
last week i bought a refurbished dell laptop, and decided to go the Linux route.
Installed Pop OS, got it configured the way I like, with my home folder on a separeate partition, and immediately made an image with CloneZilla.
I don't know if Linux has the same problem like Windows, that it slows down over time..
I have my backup image i can restore in a few moments when it does become slow, but I want to avoid that.

    Now my main question:
what are some basic pointers to keep everything running smoothly?
I'm already comfortable with running the apt update/upgrade/autoremove commands, but I guess there are other things to look out for?

    Thanks in advance

What cloudstorrage works best on linux?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:59 AM PDT

I run ubuntu and elemental and loving it, but i could use a cloud storage solution that works well on linux and phones. Any suggestions? I didn't feel like dropbox, google drive, or one drive really worked that seamlessly on linux as they do on windows.

I'd love a folder that autosyncs with the cloud storrage

Fresh install boots to BusyBox. UUID does not exist.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:24 PM PDT

I've been trying to install Linux Mint 19.2 onto an M.2 SSD.

I'm booting into BusyBox. exit gives the following output https://imgur.com/zPAM44l

I've tried Legacy + UEFI and UEFI mode. I set AHCI in the BIOS settings. Disabled fast boot.

I've booted a live CD and ran blkid. The UUID in the BusyBox output is the UUID of the live USB, which is /dev/sdb1. I disco the USB after installation, so I'm not sure why it's trying to boot to that.

I saw a guide that said to mount the root partition in the live cd and edit fstab to reflect the proper UUID. But the UUIDs in /dev/sda2/etc/fstab are correct and don't contain the UUID of the live USB.

I've done 5 or so reinstalls, trying to format the drive first, or making various BIOS setting changes above. Always get the same result.

I'm not sure what to do from here.

Edit** It's working now. I created a new Live CD, reset my BIOS settings to default (I tried that once before), installed, and booted correctly. My live CD before was a multiboot USB with a bunch of distros and Windows on it. I guess something was wrong with my installer? Anyway it's working now.

Is it a good idea to install rolling release distros on older hardware?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:40 AM PDT

I have an Intel G2030 w/ GT710. And I was wondering should I go with rolling release (openSuse) or a point release (Debian) with this hardware from 2013. As I have heard that newer h/w needs rolling release distros for compatibility. Will I have problem using rolling release on this h/w?

    MTR not working......

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Hey guys, I use MTR a lot, but ever since ubuntu 18, MTR no longer shows me a real time output. I have to wait for it to report back. For example see the results in the image. It sends 10 and then spits out a report.

Where the old one used to just show each result in real time.

I tried to roll back to another version but it dosnt work. Any suggestions?

Where to learn all the inner workings of Linux systems?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:07 AM PDT

    Hello all,

Where can I learn about all of the things inside Linux systems? Like what each folder under-the-hood is for (for example, /bin/bash/ or /dev/null/, which are currently the only two I really understand), what each daemon does, what to call on if I want to make programs to do stuff, etc.

I'm trying to go from "simple, Ubuntu-based, basic-bash user" to "I put together all of this on my own, and I know how to fix it, barebones-distro user". Just need someone to point me in the right direction to getting there.

Linux Mint boot problem - psmouse serio1: Failed to disable mouse on isa0060/serio1

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:15 PM PDT

I installed Linux Mint on my laptop successfully. Then I click "Restart Now". After that this black screen appeared.

    https://i.imgur.com/p4osvML.jpg

I have no mouse attached to my laptop. My touchpad stopped working. I pressed F12 expecting boot menu, it didn't work. Neither did F11 or 'Esc'. I tried to kill boot using Alt+SysRq+K, but none of these are working. Nothing is happening on screen. Whenever I pressed F11 or F12 the following is coming onto the screen and nothing else is happening. This is my screen right now.

I don't know what else to do. I'm afraid of what would happen if I turn off the power.

    PLEASE HELP! Thank you.

Recently switched from Windows and I am having problems with the transferred files

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:27 AM PDT

Yesterday I switched to Ubuntu Linux and saved my Local Disk E. Now I can view it but can't make any changes to it, if I edit a text file after closing the folder and opening it again it's back to how it used to be and if I try to create a folder it says:

"Error while creating directory *folder name*"

    "

There was an error creating the directory in /media/*username*/Per.

Error creating directory /media/*username*/Per/*folder name*: No such file or directory

    "

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I deleted the Windows system files, only saved the E drive

    Choosing distro with KDE

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:02 AM PDT

    Hi.

I'm waiting for my 500gb SSD to arrive so I can replace my old Optane 16gb where I currently installed eOS (my first linux) and was hoping to try something new and I really love how KDE plasma allows you to customize a lot and I would love to try it but I can't seem to understand which distro would be best for me.

I have an Nvidia 1050 in my laptop and I read that pop OS is best for Nvidia graphics card systems, with it that you can install KDE plasma but is it a good idea and will it work like any other or should I use kubuntu which uses latest version of Ubuntu (so does pop_os)? I've read around that kubuntu seems to be unstable so here's my dilemma on this one.

PopOS and does it work well with KDE plasma or kubuntu?

Yes I've researched quiet few like KDE neon, but I'm sort of looking for distro with latest Ubuntu release.

    Thanks!
