What do you call this box in my closet?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:16 PM PDT

This was installed about 15 years ago in my house when it was built. We're trying to figure out how to get the Ethernet ports in my house working. What would you call this box? A network panel?

There's a cable line inside the box which acts as our service line.

My internet has been spotty the last two days and I don't know how to fix it... I've contacted ATT and they say everything is fine but I get constant buffering on videos and 600 ping in video games.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:40 PM PDT

. There are 5 people living at my house and I seem to be the only one having a problem. We have 1GB internet and whenever I stream twitch I cannot stop buffering. I am connected via ethernet and have tried switching to another cord, but that didn't work. My other family members stream Hulu or Netflix but don't have a problem. Also when I'm gaming, i get 600 ping. I have restarted the router and still not working. Lastly, I have ran a test on PingPlotter and the results are that I have multiple packet loss on data (86% at its worst) and some latency issues as well. I've contacted ATT and they said all tests are great (they don't see anything wrong). I do not know what else to do... also if someone can interpret PingPlotter that would good too.

Advice on getting passed fire breaks in my wall

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:06 PM PDT

The wife won't let me cut holes in our walls unless it's the outlet. Problem is the builder of our house went crazy with the fire breaks. And I'm don't want to have RJ-45 outlets mid wall. So I'm dead in the water.

Any suggestions of how to overcome this obstacle? I'm not a carpentry kinda dude and thought maybe someone out there knows a better implementation than me.

    TP-Link brand?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:12 PM PDT

Hi, I have been an ASUS router user for years. Whenever I do a search for best brands TP-LINK comes out on top. My current ASUS router is doing this thing where randomly it will crash on WIFI and wired and I have to pull the plug on it. I am thinking about buying the AX90 from TP-LINK but I have never really heard of them.

    What are your thoughts?

What Mesh Router to Buy? Nest, Eero, ?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:40 PM PDT

It seems I have it down to Nest and Eero as mesh routers to improve my home's wifi since the modem is stuck in the basement, and I live in a large home. I really have complaints on one room in particular that gets ~1/4th the speed that neighboring rooms on the same floor get, and that's the room with my PS4, PC, etc.

Nest seems to overall perform better, but since I'm focusing on improving one room really, I don't have quite as much of a need for the better range that Nest provides, do I? The reason why I'm considering the Eero isn't the price, but that it's APs seem to have an ethernet port which the Nest doesn't have.

Since I could plug in the AP to my PS4 or PC, will that result in an overall better performance than a Google Nest that is right next to the PS4, but not plugged into it?

    Price is not a concern

About to get fibre. How to make the most of the faster connection?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:58 PM PDT

I have a few questions regarding connection speeds especially now that I'm about to get fibre. A bit of background, I'm currently using an ASUS RT-AC66U which calls itself a "Dual Band 3x3 802.11AC Gigibit Router". I suspect the Gigabit part is due to the speeds which are 450 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz channel and 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz channel. This router does not contain a modem so a separate one is used (not sure of the details, but it's nothing fancy).

At my house, at any given time there will be around 10 devices connected to the network, some of which could be downloading/streaming which slows down the rest of the network dramatically. I'm not 100% sure of my connection speed, but I ran two speed tests (one on 2.4 and another on 5 GHz) and got 5.16 Mbps down for both, 0.74 Mbps up for 2.4 and 0.38 Mbps up for 5 (no that's not a typo, 5 GHz upload was slower than 2.4 GHz, although I admit the test wasn't very controlled). In short, my connection is very slow.

Let me know if you need more background, otherwise here are my questions (even if you can just answer one of them, that'd be great!):

    1. (This isn't related to speed.) At the moment, the connection to the internet drops relatively frequently (we probably have an average downtime of 0.5% when we are using WiFi, so it may be more when it's not in use). This isn't an issue with the WiFi connection dropping, it is the connection to the internet as I can still connect to the router wirelessly when this happens. What could be causing this, and how can it be fixed?

    2. My router has a firmware update available. Are these easy to do? Will the connection go down while this happens? As a home user, is there any real reason to update the firmware (speed, security)?

    3. The internet connection from the ISP is going to be 100 Mbps, so I am aware that we will be bottlenecked by that, but I was thinking if there was a way to further improve the speed (without buying a new router), it might be better to move to the 1000 Mbps connection. However, the router's homepage shows this. This makes me think that the connection is limited to 100 Mbps, but I'm not sure why it would be. What needs to change to bring this up to 1000 Mbps?

    4. We have many people using the 2.4 GHz channel as most of our devices only support that frequency. This means that even with fibre, we all need to share the maximum of 450 Mbps between all of the devices (so 45 Mbps each if we're lucky) and we aren't utilising the much of the 5 GHz network (except on the few devices that do support it). Is there any way to increase the bandwidth available on the 2.4 GHz channel? We have a second router which we could connect with a wired connection, but I suspect it would cause interference due to the two routers on the same frequency. I understand there are other ways to extend the range of a network, so could any of these increase the bandwidth too?

Hopefully my questions aren't too stupid! My knowledge of networking extends as far as plugging cables into a router.

How to create access point or cascade a router

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:31 PM PDT

Hi I'm a total newbie at this and I can't seem to get it to work.I recently got AT&T fiber, but the modem/router combo (arris bgw210-700) range sucks. I have a netgear nighthawk ac1900 that I'd like to use as either an access point or as a cascaded router.(I don't know which one I should do). I followed the IP passthrough guide from AT&T and just set up the router's wifi for now. My desktop is connected via ethernet. Also, I can't seem to access routerlogin.net to configure my router. It says "You may not be connected to your Router's WiFi network." I can connect to the wifi on my desktop, but it seems that it doesnt on my phone.
Edit: I can connect to routerlogin.net on my PHONE(wifi not fully working) but not my desktop(wifi fully working). what?

I'd really appreciate a step-by-step guide/instruction on how to do this.

    Thanks.

Considering using MoCA for home WiFi

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Hi guys. I posted here recently asking for suggestions for mesh network for a large home (see here) and the support was amazing so thanks!

However, since then I have been learning more about MoCA and was wondering whether this would actually be a better solution for my situation.

Background: 4500 sq ft single story home that is "L-shaped". I am with Spectrum and they have provided me an Arris DG1670A gateway (modem+router combo). This is in one corner of the house (Family Room) and the WiFi signal does not reach the other side of the house. Certainly, something like Eero mesh wifi can be a solution for this. But I remembered that I have a coax output coming in a room near the edge of my house (let's call it Edge Room). We used to set up a TV here (service also through Spectrum) but don't really watch anything there anymore so we cancelled the extra fee they were charging us for a second set top box there. Regardless, that coax port is available now.

I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff, so please correct me if I'm wrong. But is my understanding correct that I can set up a MoCA Network Adaptor (something like this) between my wall coax port and where my gateway currently is in the Family Room? Then, use another MoCA Network Adaptor that attaches to Edge Room coax port and connects to another router, and that it would share the same SSID and password? Along the same lines, what is the use case for this product? Can I use this in Edge Room and receive a connection through the coax port there?

Really appreciate how helpful this sub has been. Thanks for your support!

Cat5e Ports Not Getting Internet Access

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:47 PM PDT

So I've been looking to hook up my house with wired internet for a while now since I have spotty wifi in my home office, and finally got around to it. I noticed that the Cat5e cable ran to the utility closet on the first floor of my house to a punch down panel.

    Panel

I read up on using a patch panel and crimping off the ends of the cables and decided to throw on some RJ45 ends instead.

    Cable Ends

I plugged all of these cables into a switch in the utility closet, and went to plug from my router in my living room to the Ethernet port closest to it. I hooked up my computer to the switch in the utility closet to at least confirm I was getting internet, but there was no internet.

I removed the jack my router was plugged into and discovered it was only wired in with 2 wires. From my reading I think this denotes it was used for telephone.

I bought a new keystone jack, and ended up wiring all 8 wires in following the 568B standard. (I had originally tried punching down with a watch repair tool I had and though I might have screwed up the jack.)

Retested in the utility closet and still no internet.

I thought the issue might've been from that port to the utility closet, so I used a extra long cable to reach the switch from the router right in the utility closet. Hooked up my computer to the switch, and as expected had internet. I then walked my computer from port to port around my house, and every single one had no internet access. I removed every jack to check, and they are all wired for Ethernet.

    Keystone Jacks

I'm kind of at a loss for what to check next. What do you guys recommend?

MoCA adapter, will my setup support it?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:24 PM PDT

So we just upgraded our Xfinity plan and I was getting nowhere near the speeds advertised on my WiFi adapter, so I hardwired it directly to the router upstairs and it works perfect; however, this is not a long term solution as the router is upstairs, my PC is downstairs, and no one would be too pleased with a 150 ft. ethernet cord dangling throughout the house.

Our cable line is upstairs, the coax cable plugging into the modem and I have another coax in my room, from when we previously had cable, many years ago. We do not have cable TV anymore, just internet, and we stream YouTube TV. I've looked into power-line adapters, and brought a repeater at one point, which works for what it does, but it cuts the signal way to much and kind of defeats the purpose.

So my question is, will MoCA work in my situation, plugging one upstairs into my router, and the second adapter in my room to the existing coax port, even if we don't have a line running into my room downstairs, and no cable TV? From my understanding, it will work; however, I just wanted to check in and make sure before I buy something and then have to waste time returning it.

Thanks to anyone that can offer any guidance on this.

This is the adapter I plan on buying:

Would this work: MoCA Wired internet access away from xFi Gateway

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Hey guys, hoping someone more knowledgeable than I can come through with an assist:

Ive got an xFi gateway (fed by coax) set up in the living room providing solid WiFi signal across the house, along with two Ethernet connections feeding an Apple TV and an Xbox. I now need to run a direct/wired internet connection to a PC workstation located across the house in another room. In this room there is another coax cable available to tap into.

My question is, would I be able to install a MoCA adapter using this room's coax cable and then run an ethernet cable from the adapter into the workstation PC to get direct highspeed internet? The online sources Ive read say the xFi gateway is MoCA 2.0, but Im unsure if one adapter alone, nor this connection path, would suffice.

What are some good routers to look into? I've currently got a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900, and it's a POS.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:19 PM PDT

The router I currently have is very awful, it constantly drops connection upon many other (minor) things. What are some specs, brands, and features should one consider when looking for routers? Once my connection returns, I'm going on a research spree.

Switch running off secondary wifi point instead of main wifi point help

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:16 PM PDT

So I currently have this setup. Modem > Main Google Wifi Point > Switch > Hardwired Wifi Points/other various computers. I noticed that the light from main wifi point -> switch only the FDX/COL was blinking whereas the other lights or ports on the switch where the google wifi points where all 3 lights are blinking. It seems like my switch is running off the secondary wifi points instead of the main wifi point. How do I change this?

Can I get ISP router to connect with pihole on second router?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:09 PM PDT

My pihole is on 10.0.0.124. The ISP router is on 192.168.254.254/24. Devices on 10.0.0.1/24 can connect to pihole but not devices connected to isp router. Second router can ping devices on ISP router but not the other way around. I have it set up this way because I have several chromecast, and the kids are always messing with each other. Is there anything I can do that will let the isp router connect to 10.0.0.124 as DNS server?

Spotty Signal in pool house, Roku or Wifi strength issue?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:49 PM PDT

Hi, Ive recently gotten a new router and and am using a Linksys AC750 extender.

We are using an older roku (3900x model) and I have tried fiddling around with the extender putting it in various spots to where the best speed/signal I get is around 2 bars and 10ish mbps down off a speed test(Not the best obviously). The roku only picks up 2.4ghz signal and will connect and stream but drop the signal after a bit. Was wondering if it is worth buying a new roku (assuming the signal is weaker due to an older chipset and lack of 5g) and or buying a better wifi extender.

    Products being used:

    Roku 3900x model

    Linksys 1750ac Dual band

    Linksys AC750 Extender.

    Any help is much appreciated!!

Slow speeds when wifi enabled on router

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:02 PM PDT

So I have this situation that I can't find anything similar to online.

Setup: I have a main modem/router which is connected to DSL and has wifi SSID Main. Only my phone connects to this wifi. To this router i have connected through ethernet another router, configured with DHCP off and connected to LAN port not WAN, about 10 meters away. This second router also uses wifi and it's SSID is Secondary. The reason i connected the second router is to use it a switch to connect my ps4 and pc through ethernet to the far modem. Now we also have a repeater, which connects to Secondary wifi, and repeats it with the same SSID, to reach the other end of the house. Most devices use the Secondary wifi for connections.

This setup has been the same for over 2 years, working fine.

Issue: Lately, all of a sudden, and especially between 2am and 6am, the internet becomes very slow and unusable, 500kbps and 1.4s ping (yes seconds not ms), be it through ethernet or wifi on both Main and Secondary. But, whenever I turn off the wifi on the secondary router (through the wifi button on the front of it), internet speed jumps back to normal, 15Mbps and 30ms ping, on both Main wifi and ethernet devices connected through secondary router. If i turn it back on the same thing keeps happening, and the weird thing is this doesn't happen through the day only at these times.

Idk if i should just change the whole setup.

Does anyone have an insight on what could be happening?

    Cat5e and Coax Wall Plate

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT

Hopefully I am in the right spot after scouring the internet for some materials.

I recently finished the wiring my builder started and never finished in my home. I have Cat5e and Coax in all the bedrooms, bonus room and living room. The builder put RJ11 and Coax plates in and I'm moving to RJ45 and Coax.

I'm fine with wiring up RJ45, I prefer the plates that I need a punch for (which I have) because the builder didn't leave much meat on the ethernet to put a connector on and use a coupler style plate.

My problem is that I can't seem to find plates that match up to the existing holes. The box in the wall and the previous plates holes are what looks like 3.25" apart and newer plates seem to be 3.75". I've looked on Amazon and monoprice and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I bought my new and now returned items from Lowes.

Thoughts or ideas? Also if there is a better place I should be asking or a resource you could point me to, I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks!
