USB C adapter bringing down network Posted: 06 May 2020 03:53 PM PDT I have some USB C UGREEN USB adapters like this one and they work great. However recently I have started to use the USB C power pass through to power my laptop (these hubs are also connected to a monitor keyboard, mouse and network). I noticed that when I did this, immediately after unplugging my laptop it would take down a part of the network, preventing traffic from getting through that switch, or even a few upstream of it. I am wondering if there is any way to fix this? Would upgrading to managed switches help solve this? I am currently just using a few basic un-managed switches and a USG gateway. Edit 1: I should clarify that this issue only happens when a USB C power adapter is connected to the adapter, and it is not connected to a laptop. Edit 2: I am reaching out to the manufacturer and will update once I hear back. [link] [comments] |
Set up another wifi network with an extra router? Posted: 06 May 2020 03:04 PM PDT Idk if this is the right place for this question, but here it goes. I am a student living with my parents and I play around a bit with servers and raspberry pi zero w and arduinos and stuff like that, so I would like an isolated LAN or just another wifi network where I can host web servers and other things like that without having to worry about my family figuring out the password and messing with my stuff. My parents have a bunch of routers lying around from over the years, and I've seen some stuff on the internet about creating another wifi network with extra routers. Is there a way to get another wifi network with those routers without having to pay the money for another one? (I just need it for my bedroom) [link] [comments] |
Pulling my hair out on trying to VLAN with EdgeRouterX and Unifi Equipment. Posted: 06 May 2020 05:39 AM PDT I have for quite a while (on and off) been trying to reconfigure my network so I can actually create VLANs for Trusted Devices/Lab Infra/IoT etc but have always hit roadblocks when trying to configure between the ERX and Unifi's different interfaces. So given this network configuration I am trying to implement. 192.168.X or 10.X either or.
so on and so forth if I need to make additional VLANs if necessary. Basically my issues are probably due to me trying to build the config from what I currently have. Everytime I have tried to test the implementation with just the WiFi I have the VLAN(switch0.x) on the ERX with DHCP scope configured and have the eth1 and eth2 set to allow that VLAN but they never get an address from DHCP. I have the dns forwarding/listen on configured for those interfaces when I try but no luck. On the EdgeRouter I have:
Unifi Switch
End Result (hopefully). At the very least 2 VLANs which both get DHCP/DNS and then I can replicate for each instance I need. They don't need to be isolated at the moment I can play with FW rules to get them closed off but I just can't manage to string together 2 VLANs without pulling my network down and pulling my hair out. Thanks in Advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2020 01:24 PM PDT Is my ISP lying to me Here go the situation There cable modems are old use docsis 2.0 real old shit so I bought a new modem to use and I wanted to activate it. The way to do it is call and give your mac address so I called up and tried to get it done. They tell me if I try to activate the new modem and it doesn't work, to activate the old one again it could mess up and they would need to send a technician which they don't have any available atm because my area is "Saturated" Are they just trying to scare me? I pay for 60mbps and get 2mbps maybe 3 on a good day. They're the only provider in the complex so i can't switch [link] [comments] |
Setting Up Wired Ethernet Home Networking Posted: 06 May 2020 06:11 PM PDT I was hoping to get some help/advice with regards to setting up a wired home network. I moved into a new house (new to me, built in 2006) about six months ago and have been using Wi-Fi, but when I moved in, I noticed that the house has Ethernet ports in all rooms. In one of the closets, there's a panel that's pictured here. It looks like for each room, there are groups of four wires. I can see two of these look like coaxial cable wires and two appear to be CAT 5E wires. As a note there's a security system hub that I'm not using just next to the panel. I've looked into that MDX-88300 that's in the panel and as far as I can tell, it's for home phone service (not planning on using it). I've never done any home networking myself, but I'm trying to understand what everything is and how I'd go about setting up my wired Ethernet connection. I understand the router and modem, but specifically I'm wondering if I'll need a switch as well as a patch panel. If so, I'd appreciate any recommendations on specific products and any useful guide related to these. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Network not working after switch upgrade Posted: 06 May 2020 06:06 PM PDT I have a small network set up in my house and everything was working normally until I tried to upgrade the 3 Cisco unmanaged 5-port switches I have. My main router is the latest FIOS G3100 model. That is connected via ethernet cable to a Cisco SD205 10/100 5-port unmanaged switch (Switch #1). I then have various appliances connected to this switch,TV, XBOX, Blu-Ray player, all of which are working fine. Also connected to this switch is an ethernet cable which brings the network to the second floor of my house and this runs to another Cisco SD205 switch (Switch #2). Switch #2 then has a desktop computer and network printer connected to it. Also connected to this switch is an ethernet cable which brings the network back down to the first floor again in another part of the house to an RJ45 wall port. I then run an ethernet cable from this wall port to a third Cisco SD205 switch (Switch #3) which I use to run 2 laptop computers. It's probably not the ideal setup but everything has worked perfectly now for a couple of years. I first replaced Switch #3 and confirmed that the 2 laptops were working correctly. Next I replaced Switch #1 and verified that it was also working correctly. My issue came up when I replaced Switch #2 on the second floor. The link light on Switch #1 for the port containing the cable going to Switch #2 just shows a steady Amber light and then obviously Switch #2 shows the same steady Amber light as well. I did test all 3 switches and confirmed that they are working and the ports are working OK. I also tested the cables connecting everything and they all work correctly separately. I suspect the issue I am having has something to do with the way I set up the network? What confuses me even more is that when I replace Switch #2 with the older SD205 10/100 switch, everything goes back to working normally again. Switches #1 and #3 are still the SG110D-05 Gigabit model. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2020 02:53 PM PDT This network I'm working with has the server as dhcp server, giving out ip leases I want to disable the dhcp at the server and switch it to the firewall giving out ip leases. This is the first time I'm taking down dhcp on a server and I'm wondering if anyone for sees any problem with this plan? [link] [comments] |
No IP visible on network device Posted: 06 May 2020 07:39 PM PDT |
Posted: 06 May 2020 06:29 PM PDT I'm looking to replace my wired router. This will go along with a Ubiquiti AP AC PRO and a Motorola MB8600 modem. I'm simply looking to minimize latency and congestion - I don't need any advanced features. Needs at least 3 gigabit LAN ports plus gigabit WAN. I've looked at the Ubiquiti ER-X Router and the TP-Link Safestream. Is one of these or the other the best bet, or something else? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Slow speeds, need router recommendation Posted: 06 May 2020 05:18 PM PDT Hello, I currently have Xfinity 300mb internet and an asus TM Ac1900 wireless router. I have 16 devices on the network including Nintendo switch, ps4, 3 smart TVs, 2 alexas, 3 cell phones, Phillips hue bridge, blink cameras, laptops and iPad. We recently moved into an 1800 square foot split level house. I have my modem and router located in our main living room. Last night I was mainly pulling down 3.5 mbps on WiFi and I called Xfinity to come take a look. We hooked up directly to modem with Ethernet and pulled down 200mbps. Switching over to WiFi I'm getting about 20. Modem is an arris surfboard sb141 docsis 3 I reached out to asus and found out the router model no longer has firmware updates. We changed some channel settings and beaming settings in the router configuration. I'm now getting around 60mbps. I'm looking for a new WiFi router that can handle at least 200mbps, with potentional to upgrade to gig speed. Im looking to spend under 200 if possible. Any recommendation? Thanks! Posted: 06 May 2020 03:04 PM PDT Hello, hope you have a good time understanding what I'm saying. So I got a new router today connected it to my 2 powerlines and they are working great with ethernet. The problem is that my smart tv has a very bad quality (netflix for example), the screen goes blurry and it takes a lot of time to load anything. What do you advise me doing? Is there a possible fix to that or should I buy a new thing like access points or how they call them. Would this make it any better? Thank you for spending your time to read my post. Ethernet/hard-wired and lagging constantly Posted: 06 May 2020 12:14 PM PDT So i have xfinity as my ISP - my current speed test results - I am hard wired connected to my 3rd party Netgear wifi cable modem router AC1750 plus my Netgear xr500 gaming nighthawk router to my PC - and I also use a CAT-7 ethernet cable which is fairly new so no chance it is a faulty cable - 360.0mbps download speed; 11.8mbps upload speed; 20ms latency; protocol IPv4; host - Secaucus, New Jersey. I live in Toms River, NJ. The speed test says my internet is "blazing fast", however, when I am competitively playing fortnite/call of duty like usual, I am constantly lagging, and I know it sounds crazy but when it is raining or snowing out is when it is the absolute worst.. I do not lag every single day. It seems as if I will go a couple of days and then I will lag all day again, then repeats the cycle over and over. I've tried resetting both my Netgear AC1750 cable modem router and my netgear nighthawk xr500 gaming router as well. I've tried resetting the gateway, which generally helps but only for a day or two, if at all. And I have tried even Wifi to see if it made any difference, but no it has not.. as expected.. I have call Xfinity to come out to my house previously and they mention that there was a problem with the telephone line outside of my house as they noticed it was sparking and that they don't have anything to do with that, but they think that is why I am lagging.. Any help here would be greatly appreciated! thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Wanting to open ports for gaming but concerned and need advice. Posted: 06 May 2020 08:55 PM PDT Hi everyone, So I want to open up some ports (do a bit of port forwarding) so that I can game in my spare time. My concern however, is that I am on a shared network with a bunch of others. If I go onto my laptop and port forward in my router settings - does this change everyone else's as well? If it so ... Is there a way around this? Currently the only ports that are open are 80 and 443. Everything else is closed. I want to be able to game without messing around with the main router that everyone else here relies on. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
One main router vs multiple AP controlled by switch. Posted: 06 May 2020 05:08 PM PDT So I've been dabbling in what I would like to do with my home network and I started wondering. Is it better to have one main router connected to your gateway or have a switch that controls many access points or can you even do that. If you have experience in multi AP do you like that setup vs a central router? I'm newer to the more advance networks meaning incorporating switches, firewalls, AP and other items more than just a router and single gateway. Any comments experiances or thoughts would be great. reolink and UniFi Switch PoE 16 (150W)? I'm thinking this would work well. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Help me figure out how to manage my home media. Posted: 06 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT I've been working on this for days but can't get my home network setup as I want to. What I have: Netgear R8000 router What I want: Central storage of my media, with playback to the TV/FireTV and access from my Laptop and Desktop. Nothing more than that is required. I previously had simply plugged the external drive into the router and it worked very easily with Netgear readyshare. Kodi worked on all devices and picked up the media from there. The problem I'm trying to solve is that it drops out all the time. I've tried googling to fix that but all answers point to 'Readyshare is not reliable' & 'Don't use your router to serve media' which seem to ring true, one of the Kodi installs has also stopped seeing it even when it's working but that could be unrelated. I have looked all over reddit and many other sites and most responses go to 'Buy an off the shelf NAS' or 'Build your own using Freenas or OpenMedia Vault' - however in every case the commenters justification is that these systems can do so much more - but I actually just dont want it to do more - I just want it to work like readyshare did, without dropping out so that I'm not spending all my time maintaining the system. I have tried to setup shared folders in windows from the PC but I can't get that to work either - most info I can find online about that is out of date due to recent changes in Win 10. I have also tried installing both OMV and freenas onto this HP but for whatever reason both installs failed - OMV also really wants me to have a second disc which is not an option on this hardware. So please help me work out what's the easy, reliable, cheap way to resolve this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT Thought about posting this in /r/networking but seemed too trivial and technically it is for a home network diagram. Anyways, is there a way to format text to the top of a text block? I see options for horizontal placement (left, right, center) but not vertical. These are the options for the text block I see. I found a doc published on their site from 2016 that seems to show this option, but that does not appear to be available now. [link] [comments] |
Spectrum Wave 2 Mesh WiFi router having issues with newer devices. Posted: 06 May 2020 08:11 PM PDT I recently installed a spectrum Wave 2 Mesh wifi router. Internet speed works great. And in my bedroom my ~7 year old smart TV and laptop have no connection issues. However my 1 year old smartphone and laptop cannot connect from my bedroom. They show a strong signal, but when I try to log in from my room I get "incorrect password" or "cannot connect to this network". When I step out my door 6 feet away it connects though. This is not an issue for the older devices. I think the problem is that with the mesh wifi the older devices are fine because they're configured for 2.4ghz. But the newer devices try to use 5ghz unsuccessfully. Has anyone had this issue? Its so strange to me that old devices would work fine but newer ones will not. I'll be doing my work in the kitchen until I can resolve this [link] [comments] |
[HELP] Installed new motherboard and CPU, now Ethernet won't work Posted: 06 May 2020 04:24 PM PDT It was working for a bit once I finished my build but it was turning off and on here and there. I tried installing my motherboard's ethernet driver off their website and ever since then my ethernet hasn't worked for my computer. I was spam clicking the setup exe in the ethernet adapter folder so maybe that corrupted them? Ethernet works for the other desktop in the house and the WiFi is working for all devices. Things I've tried: Hard & soft reset on router Different ports on router Installing/reinstalling network adapter in device manager Resetting PC Reseating ethernet in PC [link] [comments] |
New here, can someone explain all these posts? Posted: 06 May 2020 08:09 PM PDT Wanting to setup a home network so sorted by top, all-time. Kept seeing these very similar posts. Setting up my parent,s old summer house Posted: 06 May 2020 08:07 PM PDT So this is a big house, like around 20,000 square feet and four separate buildings. The local ISP finally has coverage in the area that makes it worth getting internet on the whole property and I'm trying to save them some money by installing it myself. However, this is a little bigger than anything I've dealt with before and I wanted someone to double check my plan. This is a basic diagram of what I'm trying to do. Basically I want it all set up in a way that all the devices connected either through Ethernet or Wi-Fi can see each other on the network. So say there is a Ethernet connected Google Home in Room 6 of Building 3 and I wanted to ask it to cast a security camera feed to a wireless Chromecast in Building 1. I believe that this would be possible with what I have in mind right now. For WAPs I was thinking these but I'm not against just using routers with DHCP turned off. As for things I'm not so sure about. There is a TV room in Building 3 which uses a Chromecast as its main device. If I wanted to set that Chromecast to use a VPN for Netflix should I set a Router with DD-WRT in between the main switch and the building? Should I set up another router in that room exclusively for it so that I can turn the VPN on and off without affecting the rest of the devices connected in that building? Or is it just too much of a hassle for it to be worth it? Basically this, this or this? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope all of this makes sense, is correct and that my diagrams were not too confusing. [link] [comments] |
Question about setting up home network Posted: 06 May 2020 07:40 PM PDT Hi guys, I have a quick question and I want to confirm if it's worth it or not. So, just to be quick avoid writing a long text. I have a internet service from an ISP, but the ISP does not allow me to manage the settings of my router. Basically only they can change the wireless SSID, password, enable x thing or disable and so on, which I'm totally against, but in the country and location I live they offer the best service compared to the big telecom companies. Having that said, do you guys think it will be a good idea to connect a another router in bridge, so I could manage the connection(download, upload, add restrictions) by my own and leave it the other router just to receive the connection, or it's a bad idea? Looking forward to any opinion about it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2020 07:39 PM PDT Is there any actions I can take to fight this instead of just a vpn? Even with the VPN my speed is 1/10 of whats advertised. I know they throttle because they're the only provider in my neighborhood and their equipment isn't enough to keep up with everybody. [link] [comments] |
