    Simple Questions - May 06, 2020

    Posted: 06 May 2020 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

In case you want to feel good about yourself today

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:18 AM PDT

I built my first AMD build with the 3900x back in October. I was happy, it ran well, only issue was it ran a little hot (idle usually around 50, got up to over 100 somehow at its hottest without throttling). Whatever, I thought, I'm just using the stock cooler until I get my real cooler.

Well, today, I go to install my real cooler. I've heard AMD can be difficult to remove the heat sinks, so I ran a prime95 to get the thermal paste nice and loose. I go to remove the cooler, and it feels loose so I'm happy. Then I'm trying to figure out how to take it off. The little lever is moving around, but it doesn't seem to be releasing the retention arms. Finally, I encounter AMDs website where it said to unlock the lever. I can't figure how I'm supposed to do that, but they included a diagram. The way I was pushing the lever to try to move the arms was to the locked position. When I did that, it sealed and wasn't loose anymore. My heart sank.

For 6 months, I've been using this computer with the cooler just loosely contacting the processor. That's probably why my temps were so high. At least it somehow never throttled itself.

After years of console gaming and using cheap laptops build my first pc with ur guy’s help and lots of youtube

    Posted: 05 May 2020 11:08 PM PDT

Just wanna thank you guys for helping my dumbass get this done, I've wanted this for many years but my family is very poor and I help them with finances, plus australia has ridonculous prices. I spent overall around AUD1700 for something where I'll only have to upgrade a few parts way into the future and hopefully it will treat me well

Specs Ryzen 5 3600x Steel legend b450mATX 16gb 3200 ram Sapphire Pulse RX5600XT with new bios (basically 5700 but $100 less) WD Black NVMe m.2 500g (Already had 4TB external HDD) Cooler Master 80plus gold 650 watt ps (non modular ;-; I shoulda spent the extra $20 tbh) Cooler master 120 3 in 1 fans (cable reach is crap) And the NR600 case

    I Never Realized

    Posted: 06 May 2020 12:32 PM PDT

In 2018, from about May through August, I was on here getting advice on how to build my first PC. The amount of information you guys had and the help I received was awesome. In September I decided to go and build it. It wasn't too crazy.

    Ryzen 2400G 16GB Ram 1TB HDD Built in a Rosewill FBM-X1 case

Nothing special but it worked for what I wanted (some video editing, and recording Xbox gameplay with OBS)

Fast forward to today and I've made these changes:

    2400G to a 1600AF Integrated graphics to a RX570 to a RX580 to a GTX 1070 Added an SSD Changed case to a Cougar MX330-G

Basically.. I haven't played on my Xbox since. The experience is so much more smooth in every game and I thank all of you for the help! Was just thinking about this earlier and I'm super happy I went through with it.

    Be careful of Riot anticheat!

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:43 AM PDT

The game Valorant is becoming very popular, and it has an anticheat called Riot Vanguard.

A downside is that this program will block other apps on your PC without asking. For me, it didnt allow me to look at my temperatures.

For others the harm is more severe. Another user on r/VALORANT said that the anticheat disabled his GPU cooling software entirely, and overheated past 90 Celsius to the point where he smelled melting plastic.

Please be careful of this anticheat! Make sure your essential software on your PC is not being disabled due to this.

New Intel build complete! Reminded me how much I love building PCs.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 08:11 AM PDT

Hey everyone! This is my first post here... I just wanted to share some photos and details of my recently completed build. This build is a bit different than a lot of builds here, mainly because gaming is not really a high priority for me (although I do play from time to time), hence the relatively older GPU and the huge amount of storage. The main components I was replacing were my previous CPU/motherboard/RAM, which was a 2014-era Core i5-4670. That was a great machine, lasted me a long time, but it feels great to be able to really build again. (Although I did migrate everything into a new, more modern Fractal Design Meshify C case last year to 'downsize' a bit, due to no longer needing all the drive bays of a full-tower ATX case)

I'm a professional software developer and so I do a lot of non-gaming tasks. Also, for my home Plex server, I do a lot of video encoding and moving around large video files, so I wanted a lot of very fast local storage to work with (my bulk storage is a 20TB NAS), as well as hardware H265 encode/decode. I chose the Intel i9-9900K partly for the hardware HEVC support, as well as the slightly better single-threaded performance, which matters for some of my workloads. I'm sure a Ryzen build would have saved me some money, but I'm sure this machine will last me quite a long time in any case.

    Build photos here: https://imgur.com/a/8tPgUBD

tl;dr - Skip to end for specs.

Also, just wanted to add that I have really missed building a new PC. I've been lurking on this subreddit for quite a while, however my experience with building PCs goes back a long way. I am so impressed at how many options are available now for customizing everything.

In fact, like many of you I suspect, my build is an evolution and continuation of all my previous builds, since I never replace everything all at once. So as I was going through this, I was reminiscing on all the previous systems I've worked with and how PC building has changed over the years... here are most of the iterations of my "main" PC I can remember... all of these carried over somewhat to the subsequent builds:

    • Pentium 133MHz / S3 ViRGE - My first ever build. Early 1997. I was 14 at the time, and I saved up money by pressure washing driveways in my neighborhood. I got a copy of Computer Shopper and marked all the pages for the parts I wanted, with the best prices. I sat with my mom as she called on the phone and mail ordered all the parts. I even got a massive 2GB hard drive from CompUSA, my most expensive component! I think I had 32MB of RAM. I played Quake on this one.
    • Celeron 266 (Covington) (OC@400MHz) / nVidia Riva TNT / 3Dfx VooDoo 2 - My first overclock. Mid 1998. I couldn't afford a Pentium II, so I did what everyone else was doing: I taped over the pin to run the Celeron (a cache-less Pentium II) at 400MHz. I had pre-ordered a Matrox video card for this build, but I canceled it as soon as the TNT card was first announced. Running Quake 2 with a GL driver was insane.
    • Pentium III 550MHz (Katmai) / nVidia Riva TNT2 - Mid 1999. I was so happy to upgrade to a mainline (non-Celeron) processor, however this build was short-lived.
    • Pentium III 700MHz (Coppermine) / nVidia GeForce 256 - Early 2000. Coppermine CPU was using a "Slotcket" 370 adapter card in my old motherboard. Was excited to get the GeForce, which was a huge upgrade. (The first true GPU, I think?) At the time I was playing a lot of Half-Life and CounterStrike (which was still in Beta, I recall)
    • Pentium 4 3.06GHz (Northwood) / nVidia GeForce FX5900 - Early 2003. I was busy as a college student, and didn't have a lot of time to upgrade until then. I was excited to get into a Pentium 4, but I wanted to wait until they abandoned RAMBUS. This was the first maintream Intel CPU that supported HyperThreading, and I was all over it. I can't remember what games I was big into then. I remember playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein at least.
    • 2x AMD Opteron 246 2GHz (Sledgehammer) / GeForce 7xxx (can't remember) - Mid 2004. I loved this machine. Having two actual socketed CPUs absolutely killed HyperThreading, and this was well before dual-core processors. I loved the 64-bit support and I ran Windows XP x64 on it. It was a great machine, back when Intel was still languishing in NetBurst. At some point I remember even putting a 74GB (I think?) WD Velociraptor (super fast spinning HDD) in here. It was noisy as hell! Finally mostly SATA and less old IDE drives. I remember having a bunch of 'decorative sleeved' IDE cables. Still looked awful.
    • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (Kentsfield) / GeForce 9600GT - Early 2007/GPU upgraded early 2008. At this point I wasn't really doing much gaming anymore, but this was a good system. It was driving my main machine until 2014. Later upgraded to a GeForce 560 Ti to give it more life. I was super excited to have a quad-core machine. Looking back, this is when PC hardware started to look 'cool'. My RAM had decorative heatsinks. Less ketchup-and-mustard cables. SSDs were finally a big thing.
    • Intel Core i5-4670 (Haswell) / GeForce 560Ti - Early 2014. I upgraded because the old Core 2 Quad was really not cutting it anymore, and I was playing a lot of flight simulator games. This machine lasted a very long time. I later upgraded it to a GeForce GTX 1070, and last year moved it from a giant ATX Full Tower case into the Fractal Design Meshify C.
    • Intel Core i9-9900K (Coffee Lake-R) / GeForce GTX 1070 - All the way to the present day.

    Specs:

    • Intel Core i9-9900K
    • Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black Cooler
    • ASUS ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming
    • 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB (3200)
    • Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 Mini 8GB (reused)
    • 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe SSD
    • 2TB Sabrent Rocket Q NVMe SSD
    • 2TB Samsung 860 QVO SATA SSD (reused)
    • Fractal Design Meshify C Case (reused)
    • EVGA 650 B3 Power Supply (reused)
    • Black Cablemod Cables (reused)

    Making the switch... Build recommendations?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 05:17 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!
I've been using Macs for the last decade. I'm a graphic designer (which means I use Adobe Suite all day/every day), and while Apple has worked for me up until now, I think it's time to go back to Windows environments due to Apple's increased focus on planned obsolescence and their shadier repair schemes. It'll also be nice to have a modular system again.

Here's what I came up with. I'm a little lost because it's been a while since I built my own machine, so I'd like your opinion on this system if you don't mind giving it. If you know of any places I can cut costs without sacrificing too much performance, it'd be appreciated!

Some notes: I run a Hue/Razer environment in my office currently, so I need my RGBs to play nice with that system. Another goal is to future-proof in terms of expansion potential as much as possible. I also want to play Cyberpunk 2077 on as high settings as is reasonable at under $4000.

    Thank you!

How do I convince my parents to build a gaming pc?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:08 PM PDT

Hi, 17F and new to this sub. I've been working hard for the past year to save up to build my own pc. I'm currently running on a potato, it's a Dell All in One w/ no tower. The processor is a Intel Core i3-6100U, a ram of 6GB, and an Intel 520 graphics card (integrated). The only games I can play are like League of Legends or low graphic games, it won't even run games that can run on mostly anything. My parents don't think I can actually build a pc and would rather I buy a prebuilt than wasting my money. They want me to buy a Alienware Aurora R8 Gaming PC or something similar but it doesn't really have the right specs that I'm looking for. For months, I've be learning how to build a PC by watching YouTube videos to even practicing building PCs with my friends who are pretty dedicated gamers.

How do I clean thermal paste?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:45 PM PDT

I have all my components except my AIO and I would like to use the Computer ASAP. The AIO comes next week. If I used the stock cooler until next week how would removing the thermal paste for the AIO work? Or, is it best to just wait til next week (preferably not).

Is this a bad time to build a pc?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:40 PM PDT

I have heard mixed answers from different people on this, but I will ask you guys so I can understand. Is it a bad time to build a pc right now? I want to build my first pc and know the parts I want, but all of the research I have been doing is off of the current prices, so I do not really know what the prices were like a few months ago before Corona. So what I am trying to ask is how much really have the prices gone up, will the go back down, and when will the go back down.

Thanks for any answers you can give.

Is 16 gb of ram or should i go with 32?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:36 PM PDT

I'm planning on gaming as well as using my computer as a workstation. I'm in school as a mechanical engineer so I also have to run matlab as well as cad(creo, autocad, etc.). If it helps to know the build Im working on:

    ryzen 5 3600

    3600 mhz ram speed

eventually rtx 2060 but that will be later, when I first build it I plan to just bring my gtx 980 over since it still runs great, never O.C.

All this will go on an MSI B450 tomahawk

    Evaluating CPU/GPU combo

    Posted: 06 May 2020 06:36 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm at the step of finding a CPU and GPU pair, and I could use your help.

Right now, my thought is to use a Ryzen 9 3900x with a 2080 Super. The build is for 3D animation, some deep learning, and will be my gaming rig.

If this combo is a red flag, I'd be curious to hear what you'd recommend instead! Bottleneck calculations say a beefier GPU, but I know those calcs aren't always 100%. Thanks in advance!

I just finished building my PC and it booted fine until I tried to enable XMP and reboot but as soon as I clicked it, nothing turned off but the monitor, mouse, and keyboard all turned off. I waited half an hour before a force shutdown, still didn't work. I also grabbed my old SSD and connected it without wiping it or anything. If anyone has answers, I will be grateful!

Advice on new a Budget Rig

    Posted: 06 May 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Ive built 2 previous PC's so I know a bit about what im doing (mostly from YouTube), but defiantly not an expert. Im trying to build a budget computer with the parts I currently have.

    I currently own:

    • Sapphire 8gb Radeon 580 GPU
    • 750w EVGA Bronze power supply
    • A full sized case (with intake, and 3 front fans)

My biggest concern is picking out an appropriate mother board and CPU that will be good enough so I can potentially upgrade my GPU in the future and still preform well. Originally I wanted to get a Radeon 3600 cpu with any 450 type mobo. However, ive read that a lot of 450 type boards say they are compatible with the 3rd gen Radeon cpu's but there not updated out of the box and would need a 1st/2nd gen CPU in order to get into Bios. Ive considered just getting a Radeon 2700 CPU just so I dont have to deal with this issue but, it works out to me spending more money on a lesser preforming CPU. Im also considering just buying a more expensive mobo that can support Radeon gen 3 out of the box, but im not 100% on which ones have 3rd gen support and I would like to spend less if I can.

Any advice on what I should do would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    stay safe,

Best no frills Z490 Motherboard for using a i9-10900KF and 2070 Super?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 06:07 PM PDT

By no frills means I'm not going for an aesthetic/RGB build. Don't have a preference on whether it has WiFi, here are the ones I looked it Incase someone more knowledgeable on motherboards can recognize the best bang for your buck:

    Asus TUF Gaming Z490-Plus - $199.99

    Asus Prime Z490-P - $159.99

MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WiFi - $199.99

    MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk Gaming - $189.99

    GIGABYTE Z490 Gaming X - 179.99

    GIGABYTE Z490 Vision G - $199.99

The ASRock Phantom Gaming 4, Steel Legend, and Extreme4 are all sub $200 ATX boards as well but aren't on amazon yet.

Main use will be 240hz gaming.

My friend is not very familiar with what to buy for his first PC build, so I put this together. He said he wants to be able to play Doom: Eternal and Devil May Cry 5. I believe this build will meet his needs. Is there anything I should change for this build?

    is 3200mhz ram compatible with a Ryzen 5 1600?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:44 PM PDT

I've been reading about this and there are many people saying it's not compatible.
i'm about to buy the cpu and i want to be 100% sure that i will get the maximum performance out of this pc. is the ryzen 5 1600 compatible with a 3200mhz ram kit? or will it use a lower frequency?
    thank you in advance!
pc part list *the ram says 3000mhz but it's actually the 3200mhz version which isn't on the list*

Need Advice on PC Build! Budget is $750

    Posted: 06 May 2020 09:44 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I am looking to build my first pc, but I have absolutely zero knowledge about PC's so any help would be appreciated. I have been looking on pcpartpicker but I am not sure if any of those builds are good. I have a budget of $750 maximum (cheaper the better) and I also already have a monitor and mouse / keyboard. Thank you so much!
