Is there any easy to use, free, ONIE compatible distro for whitebox switches? Posted: 01 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT I've been looking into getting a whitebox switch, mostly because I can get 10gbe switches for cheap if they're whitebox ones. But before I go ahead, is there a relatively easy to use, free, ONIE compatible distro that can be used by invididuals? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2020 07:08 PM PDT Let's say I have 10MB/s router. I want to have the minumum of 5mb/s to my PC/myself and the others can share the other 5mb/s and can't interrupt me in anyway. [link] [comments] |
Deciding between TP-Link AC1750 (A7) $65 and TP-Link AC1900 (A9) $80 Posted: 01 May 2020 11:08 AM PDT As the title suggests I'm looking at a budget router that will be carrying speeds of around 200mbps on ethernet to an apartment of about 1000sqft. Basic out of the box setup. Thank you for your input. [link] [comments] |
For similar price, is TP-Link's Deco x20 or M9 a better choice? Posted: 01 May 2020 08:49 AM PDT Both of these models can be found on Amazon in a 3-pack, $269 for x20 and $259 for M9. From what I can tell, the biggest decider is that M9 has triband with a dedicated backhaul, while x20 is wifi-6 but only dual band. For my context, I'm looking to improve the coverage at my parents cabin. Their ISP is satellite and I think only 25mbs, so in my situation I'm not really sure how much of a difference either would make. However, its an old building with 2 stories and the current router is horrible, so I'd like to at least get those 25mbs more than one room. [link] [comments] |
In-wall ethernet only showing 100Mb instead of 1Gb Posted: 01 May 2020 06:32 PM PDT I did a massive home renovation in 2012. All the walls were open so I ran Cat 6 (*) from every room in the house to a central place in the basement. Only 8 short years later I decided to finally wire up a port on the 3rd floor to extend my Wifi. My switch (NETGEAR 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch GS324) is showing 100Mb on that port. I took my router (ap-ac-lr) to the basement to hook it up with a shorter wire and it shows 1Gb so I figure it's got to be the wire in the wall. I didn't measure the length of the wire but I'd say it's 110 +/- 20 ft. I terminated both ends of the wire myself. Could I have screwed that up in a way that causing the issue? Or am I screwed and limited to 100? Any other diagnostics I could do? Thanks! (*) I bought it from monoprice. The PID is gone, but the description from the receipt is "Cat 6 Bulk Bare Copper Ethernet Network Cable STP, Solid, In-Wall Rated (CMG), 550MHz, 24AWG - Blue" [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2020 10:59 AM PDT Hello. So currently I'm using this: https://eu.dlink.com/uk/en/products/dir-842-wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-router The 5 ghz connection is utter useless, has poor connection everywhere but near the router so I'm mostly on 2.4 ghz, as such I'm looking for a change. I saw that everyone on old posts are mentioning edgerouter x and with an access point. Is it still worth it today? My price range is 140$~ . Thanks! [link] [comments] |
DSL Reports Speed Test no longer free Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:40 PM PDT http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest I had some "history" on the site. Minimal, but didn't seem to get access to the speedtest. Shame, it was one of the best for bufferbloat. I guess it's time to run my own Flent/netperf server. :/ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT So 2 days ago all of a sudden I get extreme latency on any game I play. But it's isolated, my internet speeds are good, one game I might have good latency the next I will shoot upwards by about 200-300% it is inconsistent and unplayable. I have tried so many possible solutions I cannot for the life of me figure it out. This is a major issue for me and will appreciate any support. [link] [comments] |
Why is there an Ethernet port on my treadmill? Posted: 01 May 2020 08:34 PM PDT Hello, I noticed that there was this strange RJ45 port on my treadmill. I tried plugging it in to my laptop, but nothing showed up on Wireshark (even if I bridged it to my home WiFi network). Does anyone know what this port is for (This is a Landice treadmill without any bells/whistles. No need for network data, just shows basic stuff like speed, distance travelled, heart rate, etc. It's not one of those fancy treadmills with a TV on it or whatever). Slow Wifi, fast ethernet with new cable service Posted: 01 May 2020 08:19 PM PDT Hello, Looked through this sub, but didn't find a situation that was quite the same even though the resulting problem was the same. Recently switched from ATT fiber (300 Mbps) to Spectrum cable (400 Mbps). With ATT I used their router/modem, I was getting speeds as advertised on wifi. When moving to Spectrum (using their modem and my router - ASUS RT-N56U), I get 400Mbps on ethernet but 70-80 Mbps on wifi. I've tried the following: 1. updating firmware on my router 2. resetting router 3. Selecting a specific channel for the 5Ghz network (149) 4. Removed obstacles between router and desktop (wifi speeds are same sitting right next to router) 5. Removed all other devices from network Network adapter is: Netgear WNDA3100v2 N600 Wireless USB adapter. It's old, but is capable of getting up to 300Mbps. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Netgear Nighthawk AX4300 RAX45 Router Performance Issue Posted: 01 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT I am trying to replace a Technicolor CGM4140COM modem/router Comcast rental with Netgrear modem and router. I plan on doing this with a Netgear CM4100 modem that hasn't arrived yet and my new Nighthawk AX4300 RAX 45 router. For the time I have my RAX 45 plugged into the CGM4140 with a cat 8 cable. Using this set up and doing some practical testing while streaming two 4K videos on two different TV's and and two 2K videos on two laptops I noticed one of the TV's was having to buffer the video due to a lack of sufficient bandwidth. I then did some speed tests with my wi-fi 6 802.11ax phone and found I was able to get about 180 Mps to the phone with everything else still streaming video. I did the same exact test using modem+router on the CGM4140. Absolutely no buffing occurred streaming the videos. When I did some speed test with my phone they were consistently 600 Mps and over 3X faster the using the new RAX 45 router. My plan is 600 MPS not a 1 gig plan but never have trouble getting 600 on the phone with wi-fi 6. Unless someone can help explain what going on here I will have to return my Netgear equipment and just rent the CGM 4140 from Comcast. I wasn't expecting a drop in performance. The specs on the Netgear RAX45 indicate it should easily outperform the Technicolor CGM4140. [link] [comments] |
Not achieving Gigabit speeds after network switch Posted: 01 May 2020 11:00 AM PDT Here is my setup Nighthawk RAX120 -> Netgear GS105 -> Surface Pro 3. The GS105 is connected to the RAX120 with an Insignia Cat6 cable (50') then the Surface Pro is connected to the GS105 with a Cat5e (6'). In the Nighthawk app when I run a speed test I'm seeing roughly 950mbps up and down at the router. When I run a speed test at the Surface Pro I am getting about 650Mbps down and 375Mbps up. When I run a speed test from my apple TV using the Ookla app I am getting the same 950Mbps as I do from the router. The Apple TV is connected via a cat5e cable (6') directly to the router. Any Idea what the issue is? EDIT: I'm using the Microsoft Surface dock model 1661 to make the ethernet connection to the surface pro. The specs say it's a gigabit port. [link] [comments] |
Search for an inexpensive dual-band router capable of providing Wi-Fi to a medium-sized flat Posted: 01 May 2020 03:34 PM PDT We have 300/300Mbit internet connection. Our current router is not even able to properly serve us (it has 10Mbit WAN port). We have <10 devices connected to the internet and we aim to only use Wi-Fi for connecting them. I have found couple of routers that fit our needs: Asus RT-AC59U, RT-AC1750U, RT-AC65P (RT-AC1750), Tp-Link Archer A9 and Archer C80. Which one do you recommend? What are other options worth considering? Thanks a lot for any help! [link] [comments] |
Local name resolution for multi-segment home network Posted: 01 May 2020 07:07 PM PDT I have a network set up like this: All addresses are static except for the DHCP clients. I hope it's not too weird a network setup. Name resolution works on the 10.0.0.X network using Avahi/Zeroconf/Bonjour (avahi resolves for Linux and Bonjour for Windows). It works well, allowing me to do "ping HalsPc" and have the name resolve properly from other clients without editing any host files. How do I enable local name resolution for the devices on the other segments, though? I'd like to be able to "ping HalsFirewall" and "ping HalsGateway" from the DHCP clients, but since they are on different networks, I don't think Avahi/Zeroconf/Bonjour will work. It would be good to have something easy to set up and manage, without having to keep all the clients hosts files up-to-date. I think I need a DNS server, such as perhaps dnsmasq, but I'm not sure how to set it up exactly. Would I need to have a DHCP server for each segment instead of static addresses? I would like to keep things simple. Right now my router is an Asus RT-AC3200 running stock firmware, but I could install Tomato or something if necessary or if it would help things. Should I use subnets instead of different networks? In short, I want to be able to give HalsFirewall that hostname (HalsFirewall) or HalsFirewall.local or HalsFirewall.HalsNetwork or something like that and be able to resolve that name from HalsPc (on 10.0.0.X) without having to change much around. Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance! [link] [comments] |
Laundry chute as mini network closet? Posted: 01 May 2020 11:34 AM PDT Just moved into a new house...well, new to us but actually very old. It's hard to get through the walls and flooring, but the cable PoP is in the basement. There is a disused laundry chute which connects the basement to a small utility closet snack dab in the middle of the main floor. My idea would be to use the existing chute to run some cable and then just hang my router inside the little laundry chute door. Would this interfere with WiFi signal strength to a meaningful degree? The chute is made of a thin metal duct, which I suspect is galvanized steel (think it's too old to be aluminium). Any thoughts welcome! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2020 07:03 PM PDT Hi, I currently have Spectrum internet at 400/20 speeds. My setup is as follows: ARRIS TM502G/TW-4 --> SB6183 --> ASUS RT-N66R The devices that I'm having issues with are wired + wireless. Devices are desktops + laptops running Windows 10. This seemed to just have happened recently as I haven't had issues prior. No firmware updates have been run. I've started to experience issues with specific web pages not loading ("this site can't be reached"). Other web pages seem to load fine. It lists the options of checking the firewall and running the network trouble shooting tool. Doing that, it tells me that "Windows could not automatically detect the network's proxy settings." All my settings are set to automatically detect and I'm not using a proxy server (I have not changed any of those settings at all before or after). I'm currently running Malware Bytes + ESET antivirus. I'd be willing to provide any other information that I may be lacking. Thank you for your help. EDIT: Adding that utilizing a VPN seems to solve the problem. I have no idea how to fix this. [link] [comments] |
Question: Inconsistent Speeds. Please Help!! Posted: 01 May 2020 02:57 PM PDT I stream video games online. I stream on my XBOX1X and handle all the streaming stuff on my 2019 Macbook Pro. Both the XBOX1X and Macbook Pro are hardwired. My download speed is 300 mbps and upload is 30 mbps. Bit rate is set to 5.5 or 6 mbps and I stream at 720 60fps. Can someone tell me when I do a speed test, sometimes it will show my upload speed has 3 (yes 3.0) and other times around 28-30 which what it is supposed to be. I have the same server selected and not doing anything online at the moment of doing the speed test. Thank you [link] [comments] |
NAT Issue with Switch Lite and SonicWall NSA 220. Posted: 01 May 2020 06:41 PM PDT So I have an issue that I am hoping can be solved here dealing with the NAT type of my wife's Switch Lite. I've done all that I can think of and I am coming up with nothing. I am using the SonicWall NSA 220. Originally, I had only my Switch under any NAT policies cause I was the only one doing any online play. I had created a Service Object called All Switch Services with TCP ports 6667, 12400, 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, and all UDP ports. Then using the wizard to create a public server, I generated the 3 required policies with only my Switch's IP and moved them to a higher priority than the catch-all policy. This took my NAT type from D to A and fixed any connectivity issues that I had. Then, Animal Crossing New Horizons came out, and the wife now does substantially more online play than I do. So, I did the only thing I thought would be needed to change her NAT type to A. I created an Address Object that includes both of our Switches and swapped that object for the one the wizard created. While this did some good, it only put her NAT type to B and she is still having trouble connecting to some islands. For one specific example: One of her friends has a NAT type of A and she can visit their island, but they are not able to come to her's. So, what else can I do that would solve this issue? I'd like to think that there is a solution other than creating a DMZ policy and putting her Switch in it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Why would TP-Link use WPA in their Auto mode? Posted: 01 May 2020 08:53 AM PDT So I was using inSSIDer to examine some wifi stuff and it complained saying that "It looks like WPA security is enabled on your network...[and it shouldn't be]." So I look in my Wifi Settings and see that the version is set to "Auto" instead of WPA-2. I can easily change this, but two questions:
