Home Networking Do Switches Reduce Performance?

Home Networking Do Switches Reduce Performance?

    Do Switches Reduce Performance?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:06 AM PDT

At home, we have an Apple Airport router and a Netgear GS605 switch. I have two Windows laptops set to share drives over the network. I plugged both laptops into the switch using ethernet cables and transferred a 10GB file between the two. I was getting 11MBps (megabytes per second). When I plugged both directly into the Airport router instead (using the same ethernet cables for each laptop), the same file transferred ten times faster (111 MBps). I do not understand this speed difference at all. I expected the performance to be the same. What could cause this disparity? Is it:

    • The switch is bad?
    • The ethernet cable connecting the switch to the router is bad (I don't even know if this is relevant)?
    • This is normal and all switches reduce performance like this?

I know very little about computer networking, so I have no idea why the performance was so bad. Any ideas?

Will buying a good router improve my wifi connection over my current modem?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 05:23 AM PDT

Yesterday I discovered that my modem has 5ghz internet (yes I feel very stupid for not knowing about this). I was blown away with the improved wifi performance. My apartment has quite thick walls and I thought that 5ghz would be a problem but turns out it isn't.

Wireless internet has always been shit in my apartment (2 floors @ 95m2). So a few years ago I bought a Asus RT-N12+ (2.4ghz) router thinking it would make the WIFI connection better. It did in some rooms but to be honest it still isn't great. Actually the modem out performs the router at 2.4ghz in my recent testing, which is weird seeing as my router is placed in what seems to be a better position than the modem.

Since setting up the 5ghz on my modem my WIFI has been great. In the upstairs rooms I get from 50-120 download over wifi verses 240 mbps wired.

Will buying a router at a price point of around 50-60 euros make my connection even better? Or should I just stick with the modem which was provided by my ISP. I don't know which exact model I have but it is branded Ubee.

    Thanks for any help

HELP, TP-Link T1600G-28TS smart switch unable to establish a connection to the internet.

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:14 PM PDT

As the title says I'm unable to establish a connection to the internet with my TP-Link switch. I've configured the DHCP pool settings and that works great but I have yet to find what comes next. My network config (Linksys CM3024 modem > switch > PC) all help is appreciated and I can provide more info if needed.

Can I run a switch straight from the modem and into my WiFi router?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 08:43 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am new to networking and would like to have my modem in my basement but my WiFi router centered in my house.

I would like to run a switch between my modem and my WiFi so I can use existing cat 5 through the house to end in terminals stationed upstairs. While still having my router centered in my living room.

    Modem —> Switch (w/ 3 cat5 leading upstairs) —> Router.

Is this doable and are there considerations I should be making?

    Thank you!!

    Router choice question

    Posted: 31 May 2020 08:22 PM PDT

Hi all, please save me from this madness!

I bought the TP-Link Archer A20 (which is a great AC4000 Wifi 5 router, recommended by Wirecutter).

But just noticed that Costco offers NETGEAR Nighthawk AX6 (model RAX45, AX4300) for the same price ($200). This one is Wifi 6.

I don't care much about Wifi 6 because 6E is coming and most of my devices don't support it. But I guess it doesn't hurt to have either.

So which one of these is a better router? Should I return the TP-Link for the NETGREAR one?

    Thanks so very much.

Question about modem router to buy

    Posted: 31 May 2020 08:15 PM PDT

I am not an expert on this so i thought you guys would be able to help. My plan for xfinity is 600 Mbps for the internet and I was looking to upgrade my modem (it is a modem/router combo). I saw that to buy two separate ones are a better option. Which Docsis 3.1 modem and router can I purchase? There will be a lot of devices connected to it.

Looking for a pvc ceiling flange with outside threads to run 10-12 cat6 wires cleanly through ceiling (from attic).

    Posted: 31 May 2020 10:15 AM PDT

I was going to drill a hole in the top frame board inside the wall, but decided I'd rather not weaken the integrity of the structure frame (I know it's minimal risk but still...). Instead I wanted to drill a hole in the ceiling (size depending on the pvc pipe) and put a flanged pvc pipe. Put my ethernet cables in there and seal with expanding spray foam. I'm looking for one that has threads on the outside so I can I can screw a plastic 'bolt' for lack of a better term on the pvc to secure it. I think I just don't know what they are called because I can't find anything resembling this. Here's a professionally drawn diagram of what I'm looking for

    Sharing devices between two routers?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I have purchased a Linksys Velop mesh network/extender since I had poor reception in my office. I was previously using the extender that came with my router, but I was getting slow speeds so I decided to get a mesh network.

Problem is that I cannot figure out how to share the devices connected to the mesh network to appear while I'm connected to main router.

I have a modem+router combo plugged in directly into the cable feed, then the Velop router connected via ethernet on the back of the first router. How could I get the devices in the two networks to talk to each other?

Possible to block/prevent alternate DNS being used while connected to internet (router)?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 03:38 PM PDT

My home internet is set up to block adult websites/porn from children in daycare. I use CleanBrowsing which had me set up a manual DNS on my router. I believe some have become tech savvy & figured out how to use an alternative DNS through iphone wifi settings(seems to be google DNS 8.8.8.8). Using this in the iphones wifi settings is completely overriding the settings in the router for CleanBrowsing DNS (making possible to access inappropriate sites). I am trying to figure out how to prevent 8.8.8.8 or any other DNS from being effective while on wifi (router) that is set up specifically with a CleanBrowsing DNS. I have heard about setting up port 53 to be used ..... however I am not very tech savvy myself so i am unaware how to do specific steps. Thank you so much!!!!!

Mesh or Extender - Need to stable & fast LAN in corner of concrete-wall apartment

    Posted: 31 May 2020 03:18 PM PDT

So I've always either lived in studio apartments where a decent router covered everything without issue, or in houses wired for ethernet - so I haven't had to dive into the world of wifi repeaters or mesh networks yet.

But I find myself in a bit of a tricky situation now that I could use some help thinking through.

My new apartment has very thick and solid concrete walls and is laid out in such a way that it's not possible to run cable where I'd need to to solve this problem easily. I've put together a rough sketch which you can see here

I'm not 100% sure that the problems are entirely due to weak wifi, there are a lot of moving parts and I'm sure there are more than a few underlying causes here, but I'm curious about my options could be to at least put myself in the best possible position (within the can't-run-cables restriction) on this axis of the problem.

The goal - achieve stable and fast LAN speeds for the server and desktop in the corner office

    - note: I specifically mention LAN speeds b/c device-to-device speed on the LAN is important here (media streaming from local server to local playback devices, local server for shared storage, etc), I'm not just concerned with satisfying internet download speeds

    Where I'm at right now:

Wireless router: TP-Link AC2800, located at the spot marked 'router' in the pic linked above

Desktop PC: windows gaming pc, connecting via onboard wifi (Intel® Wireless-AC 9560, asus maximus xi hero, comes with external antenna, have tried antenna extender cables with limited improvement) - currently get linkspeed floating between 300-700mbps

Server: 2014 razer blade laptop, running ubuntu 18.04, using a usb wifi (NETGEAR A7000) - this reports a linkspeed of 1300mbps

    Assumptions:

    - I can't run any more cable than I already have to get the router closer to the office

    - I can't relocate the desktop computer

    - Could possibly relocate the server, but it'd be less than ideal to do so

    Symptoms I'm seeing:

    On the desktop:

    - latency spikes in online games (mmo's)

    - slow transfer speeds to server storage

    - slow media streaming speeds from the server or other connected devices (e.g. xbox), <20mbps even when linkspeed is reporting at 700+

    On the server:

    - slow media streaming

    Between desktop and server:

    - iperf3 from server to desktop reports ~100mbps

    - iperf3 from desktop to server reports ~20-25mbps

    - iperf3 from server/desktop to a mobile device in the same room: ~130-150mbps

Between two laptops sitting right next to the router:

    - iperf3 between devices: 250-270mbps

    Things I'm considering:

The following is just a set of ideas I've come up with based on my research over the past week, would be great to hear people's thoughts on which of these is approaching the problem the right way, or which might be missing the point / not effective - absolutely open to other ideas I haven't thought of as well.

    1) Extender in office + ethernet to extender

Put a wifi extender just inside the door of the office (there's a filing cabinet it could sit on where it would have a pretty straightline (~10m) shot to the router, only having to go through a wooden door if the door is closed), and then run ethernet cable from the desktop and the server to this extender

    - the thinking here is that a dedicated extender would make a stronger client-side connection to the router, and I would remove 2 broadcasting devices from the 'weak area'

    - not sure in this approach what kind of extender I'd be looking to buy, as I wouldn't actually need one to 'rebroadcast' in any capacity, I actually just need a strong wifi-receiver with a network switch attached - is that a thing?

    2) Upgrade wifi router to something stronger

    3) Upgrade to a mesh system

    - both of the above seem like just throwing money at the problem, but this might be a scenario where that works - how much has router strength and throughput improved in the last 3-4 years?

    4) Upgrade client-side wifi devices (pci-cards and/or usb)

    - this follows the hypothesis that the router itself is doing a decent job of broadcasting into that space, but the devices are just struggling to maintain that link on their own end - but I may not be grokking that relationship properly

What are ya'lls thoughts? Any recommendations? Happy to provide additional context wherever necessary

    MoCA help needed

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:55 PM PDT

I'm new to trying to set up networks and stuff, so I could use a bit of advice. I'm trying to set up a smart TV, a PS4, and an Xbox one up in my spare room, but that's several rooms and walls away from my modem and router, and the wifi is very weak over there. Running cat5 cables would be impractical as well.

As a compromise, a bought the Actiontec MoCA adapters seen here:

Adapter set/ Adapter set with demo

The diagrams on how to use them are clear enough as far as what cables go where, but does it matter if I plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port or WAN port of the router? Or does the first adapter need to be plugged into the modem itself? Where do I put the PoE filter? Is it even necessary if I live in a house rather than an apartment building?

Switching to Fios from Spectrum, use my own router? Optional services?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:51 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm planning to go back to Fios (just internet, no TV/voice) due to their lower ping to Asia CSGO servers (I play with friends overseas). 200Mbps speed only, as there are only 3 users in the household. Trying to make it as close to Spectrum's monthly as possible. Won't cut Spectrum until Verizon is installed.

    My questions are:

Can I just plug and play my own router? I have a Linksys EA7300.

Do I need anything else, like "Inside Wire Maintenance" ($15/mth) or Verizon Protect Home ($25/mth)?

    Thanks in advance!:)

Router and Access Point recommendations, 3400 Sq ft

    Posted: 31 May 2020 12:38 PM PDT

Just got into my new home build and found that my Orbi router is DOA. Old house had 3 floors and zero ethernet. New home I do have network drops in some main rooms and thought to do a network upgrade. Reading a bit here, seems the router and separate WiFi AP's are the thing to do instead of all in ones. Here is what I am working with -

    • 3400 Sq Ft (2 floors)
    • 500/500 FIOS
    • Around 6 network drops around the house
    • Streaming, gaming, Netflix, whole house streams all media content
    • In the future, plan on doing a NVR/Blue Iris security setup, so POE might be worthwhile down the road
    • Intending to smart home everything

Looking for router and access point recommendations. Initially thinking router plus 2-3 access points to cover everything.

How to get two TP Link EAPs to work at once?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:47 PM PDT

I have two of these TP link EAP 225s (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0781YXFBT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), that I would like to connect to my internet to increase coverage in my basement and a distant area of the house from the router. Previously, I ran a CAT-6 cable to the distant area and hardwired it into my FIOS modem, and the wifi in that room is great. When I bought the 2nd one, I figured I could do the same, but then realized my FIOS modem/router) only has one slot for a connection. I bought this router (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1L5HX1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), but when I plug both EAPs into the router, only one carries a connection and the other does not.

What do I need to buy or do in order to get both EAPs to work? I don't even mind if it means having 2 or 3 wireless networks in my house, I just want to be able to have fast internet in these areas because one if my work from home area, and the other is where the kids stream their shows/movies.

EDIT - Problem solved. Appreciate the help!

there is a 1-gigabit connection between where the server would be and the computer.

This is going to sound weird

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:20 AM PDT

So a couple weeks ago I posted about how shitty my landlords WiFi connection was. I was getting something like .5mbs down. But yesterday, the breaker my room blew and all of a sudden I was getting 20mbs down. Then when the breaker was fixed I was getting .5mbs down again. Since the room where the router is located is directly beneath my room I'm curious if there is some kind of electrical interference from the way the room is wired. The home was built in 2011 so the electrical interference doesn't really make sense. But I'm curious as to what was going on. I'm moving out in a couple of days so I won't really be able to find out what happens but I have never seen this for as long as I've been a tech and I'm curious as to what you all have to say.

Need advice on a switch that is able to limit bandwidth per port

    Posted: 31 May 2020 05:13 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I had previously purchased a Zyxel switch (GS1200-8) because I was under the impression that would do the trick. Unfortunately, there were only 10M,100M,1000M options per port, and I couldn't finely adjust the exact bandwidth out per port: also, using 10M would result in about 100 kbps and 100M would be about 256kbps.

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a device that can do specific bandwidth (say 15mbps) on one port. I had heard that the GS305E might work, but I want to avoid ending up in the same scenario as before where I am only able to limit the protocols to 10M 100M or 1000M.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Any guide to getting optimal Speeds with aT&T Fiber?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:06 PM PDT

I searched a bit, but didn't find anything conclusive. I have had AT&T Gigabit for around 3 years now but am not happy with the network performance I am getting. On a wired connection I am getting around 90 down and 100 up and on wifi (2.4) I get around 10-30 up/down. My gateway is supposedly operating at expected speeds and I know that I am sharing the connection with neighbors, but I still expect to get better speeds than I am getting. I will admit I have a lot of devices on my network, but most are not concurrent.

Also recently, my devices have been having trouble connecting to my wifi, and I don't use the 5ghz band because it is spotty and interferes with one of my Google Home connections.

My Modem is the Pace 5268AC and I am willing to invest in a better modem/router if I know it will significantly improve the problem.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Upgrading my modem and router

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:04 PM PDT

I recently upgraded my internet. I use WOW! as my internet provider

My previous plan was: 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload

My new plan is: 200Mbps download and 10Mbps upload

I currently have a TP-Link TL-WR740N as my internet router. It's a cheap crappy router (by the way I live in a small apartment) it's a 150 Mbps router

I have a NetGear CMD31T Cable Modem. It also supports up to 150 Mbps

I tried plugging my computer directly into the cable modem using an Ethernet cable and I checked the internet speed. It was around 140 Mbps which makes sense cause my modem only supports up to 150 Mbps

I plugged my computer into my router and I was getting 100Mbps. Idk why.

So my modem and my router are both bottlenecking my internet speed. But my router is def bottlenecking it more.

I should be getting closer to 200 Mbps

Should I upgrade both my router and my modem? And what should I upgrade to?

I was considering an ARRIS SB6183

    My Plan

    Posted: 31 May 2020 03:54 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I would like to check if my plan for my small home network setup is possible, I am a complete beginner to networking so I thought I should outline my plan to people with good knowledge of the field.

Currently I have only ever used the modem-router provided by the ISP, plugged it in and it all fine. But I want to upgrade, to connect devices by ethernet that is downstairs away from my router.

I am currently with Sky (UK Provider) and I have their broadband and tv. From what I understand their TV boxes actually act as wifi boosters, like a mesh network system. I have the Sky Q router, Sky Q box and a Sky Q Mini box (which has a ethernet port).

I keep the Sky Q box downstairs in the living room which also has many devices, the router in the study room upstairs and the Sky Q Mini in the upstairs lounge which has a ethernet out port which is hooked to my Xbox.

I wish to have ethernet downstairs in the living room and upstairs in the study room however I do not want to have wires coming from upstairs and drilling walls. So here is my plan.

Connect a powerline adapter upstairs to the router, and the other downstairs.

Use that ethernet port downstairs and connect it to a ethernet switch.

Use that ethernet switch to connect things I have in my Entertainment Area such as Sky Q Box and Yamaha AV Reciever.

I don't mind changing the routers location to the Entertainment Area, I only keep it upstairs becuase I thought with all the other devices there it could interfere with the signals. But my master socket is downstairs so keeping the modem-router in a socket that isn't the master socket will not give the fastest speed. Which puts me in a situation.

Also if I am getting 55mbps out of my promised 64mbps would getting a new modem-router be worth it?

I hope this all makes sense, this is actually the first time im using reddit that not to do with memes.

Obtain full DL bandwith with switch connected to ISP Modem

    Posted: 31 May 2020 03:04 PM PDT

My current ISP contract provides me with up to 200 Mbps, however the modem/ONT they gave me is only able to provide 100Mbps per ethernet port (don't even know about Wifi). Given that I ran out of ethernet ports I'm thinking about getting a switch. As far as I understand it would be enough to connect one of the ethernet ports on the router to one of the ports on the switch, but that would limit the global download bandwith to 100mbps for those devices connected to the switch. Would I have to connect 2 or more ports from the modem to the switch to get full download bandwith on everything I connect to the switch? According to the ISP's forums I've got a limited selection of ONT models they accept, and since it also provides me with a telephone line I can't change it.

An ip from my local network is portscanning me.

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:05 AM PDT

My av ( Kaspersky Security Cloud, the free kaspersky av ) has been picking up an ip portscanning me, but it seems to be from my own network ( the ip of the scanner begins with 10.0.0.) There is also a random phone connected to my pc, i dont know if it has been connected from when the scanning starts or maybe the phone will go away ( i use windows 10, when i got to my pc and then to network, it shows the phone. In the properties of the phone there is no ip, nothing but the phone manufacturer, i dont know if this is related). What can i do to maybe stop the portscanning, or block the ip or whatever. Any advise is welcome.

My Internet works, but it's weird..

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:43 PM PDT

    Hello,

My internet's been acting weird since yesterday. The internet itself is working. I'm still able to connect to the websites, watch Youtube etc.

    The Problem:

    1. Some websites (ex. Google News) get an error saying "... DNS address could not be found". and when I refresh it 2-3 times, it loads after.
    2. In video games, ex. CS:GO. Steam player's icon won't load. or in another game, a boss mob is invisible to me.

    What I tried:

    - I googled the error and people suggested Flushing the DNS. So I did that on my PC, but that didn't fix the problem.

    What I did yesterday:

    - Nothing was unordinary, I played some games. I livestreamed a game for an hour. Watched some livestreams (SpaceX and Protests). I think livestreaming might have caused it, but I'm not too sure.

    My ISP:

    - Optimum, 400mbps service

    - Me and my family, 4 people uses it on daily basis

Anybody have a clue? Let me know and thank you in advance.
