Posted: 01 May 2020 04:09 AM PDT Hello /r/android, We've been redesigning a bit the VLC/Android application for the next release. We've moved to bottom navigation for Android 9/10/11 compatibility, are getting closer to Material guidelines and added a lot more UI tricks and animations to feel more native. We'd love to hear feedback so that we can improve before the final 3.3.0. You can enroll to the beta here. You can find the source here. Note: VLC is fully open source, and uses no non-open-source components (including PlayServices) [link] [comments] | ||

Ultimate F-Droid and and anti big brother companies guide Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:34 PM PDT Hey guys, one or two weeks ago, I started an F Droid discussion, which apps are the best. The response was incredible! I discovered some new apps as well and want to give you now the very best of F Droid and an ultimate guide to get rid of Google and all the other big companies. It's basically a collection of my and all the apps mentioned in that other post. I marked all the apps I use with an "*". Please feel free to comment if I missed anything. I also want to explore all those apps. Please note: I don't get paid from anyone for this and I don't want to say that any apps not present on the list are bad or worse than those apps! I tried my very best to select my apps and those which where mentioned in the last posts. Please remember: Please keep in mind that all the apps available on F Droid are 100% free. Don't forget to donate to those you like! They count on you! --- System --- LineageOS (https://lineageos.org/) An alternative operating system which requires high skills to install, from what I heard. It's basically Android but usable without a Google account. Shelter* (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/net.typeblog.shelter/) Creates a second "work" account where you can isolate apps you don't want to use, which can't be uninstall though. --- App Stores --- F-Droid* (https://f-droid.org/) The app store which only has FOSS apps. Nice and easy overlay, auto updates for apps, screenshots. Aurora Droid (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/com.aurora.adroid/) Basically F Droid, just more beautiful. Aurora Store* (https://f-droid.org/app/com.aurora.store) A Google Play Store App, which let's you use the store without an account. Has an integrated tracking radar which shows the trackers within the apps. I have to use it sometimes to get e.g. banking apps I need. --- Keyboard --- AnySoftKeyBoard* (https://f-droid.org/app/com.menny.android.anysoftkeyboard) Open Source solution. Works well after setting everything up. --- Browser --- DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser* (https://f-droid.org/app/com.duckduckgo.mobile.android) A browser which automatically blocks third party cookies and trackers and also shows them to you. Let's you create shortcuts at the home screen. Can not recommend it enough. Tor Browser* (https://f-droid.org/app/org.torproject.torbrowser) The Tor browser for android. I think I don't need to explain this one. (You have to activate "The Guardian Project" in F Droid to see this app). Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/mobile/) Even though its not available on F Droid, the list would be incomplete without it. Bromite (https://www.bromite.org/) Not on F Droid but is recommended. --- Messenger --- Signal* (https://www.signal.org/de/download/) NOT available on F Droid. Nevertheless you can download it via apk, it self updates. Its FOSS, E2E, in my opinion the best right now. Telegram (https://f-droid.org/app/org.telegram.messenger) Well I guess, I don't have to explain this one. Jami (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/cx.ring/) Video conference calls. Jitsi (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.jitsi.meet/) Video conference calls. Briar (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.briarproject.briar.android/) Have never used it but recommended. --- Social Media --- NewPipe* (https://f-droid.org/app/org.schabi.newpipe) Basically YouTube, usable without an account and with an integrated download function. Best version I have seen yet. Its made by the gods just for us. Frost* (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/com.pitchedapps.frost/) Facebook App. Notifications available. Nice and easy. SlimSocial (https://f-droid.org/app/it.rignanese.leo.slimfacebook) App for Facebook but without all them trackers. No notifications thou. Slide* (https://f-droid.org/app/me.ccrama.redditslide) App for reddit but also without any trackers. RedReader (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.quantumbadger.redreader/) Also for reddit. Choose your favorite. Twire* (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.perflyst.twire/) Twitch. --- Maps --- OsmAnd+* (https://f-droid.org/app/net.osmand.plus) OpenStreetMaps navigation and offline files. Comparable to Maps.me but also no trackers (Maps.me has 18 trackers right now). A lot to set up first but it works well afterwards. StreetComplete (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/de.westnordost.streetcomplete/) Change informations in OoenStreetMaps --- Calendar --- Tutatota* (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/de.tutao.tutanota/) Full mail and calendar client and provider. Incredible high focus on privacy, look good, works good. Some features are still in development but free or very cheap in the premium version. OpenTasks (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/org.dmfs.tasks/) Simple tasks app. Etar (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/ws.xsoh.etar/) My second choice. Simple Calendar Pro (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.simplemobiletools.calendar.pro/) The calendar of the "simple" apps. --- Mail --- FairMail* (https://f-droid.org/app/eu.faircode.email) Mail client which let's you do, what ever you dream of. It won't win the beauty award but has everything you need. K-9 (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/com.fsck.k9/) Mail client. Haven't tried this one yet but its highly recommended. Tutatota* (https://f-droid.org/de/packages/de.tutao.tutanota/) Full mail and calendar client and provider. Incredible high focus on privacy, look good, works good. Some features are still in development but free or very cheap in the premium version. ProtonMail (https://protonmail.com/de/) Full mail client. Not on F Droid but mentioned often. --- Documents --- Pdf Viewer Plus* (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.gsnathan.pdfviewer/) PDF Viewer. PDF Converter (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/swati4star.createpdf/) I guess the name says it all. MuPDF mini (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.artifex.mupdf.mini.app/) Document viewer. MiXplorer (https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.mixplorer) Not F Droid, file foulder. Note Crypt Pro (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.notecryptpro/) Secured notes. --- Privacy Tools --- Blokada v4* (https://f-droid.org/app/org.blokada.alarm) Ad and track blocker. Has an DNS function and a paid tunnel version. Works well but often stops. OpenVPN for android (https://f-droid.org/app/de.blinkt.openvpn) VPN without root access.
