I've made a list of the best PSU's available for under £100 Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:03 AM PDT See here This is not an exhaustive list, but I thought it might be useful for those especially UK based where most of the online guidance is geared towards North America where we don't have the same selection. Of course much of it is subjective and note that the 'Quality' column is out of 100 and is supposed to be a numerical value of Performance, Features and Build Quality as per johnnyguru. So even the "worst" one is still very good. The rest of the key is hopefully self explanatory! EDIT: Just adding a few more in [link] [comments]

LTT Forums Tier Lists: Getting the Most for Your Money Posted: 02 Apr 2020 11:20 AM PDT All too often I see confusion among builders about which power supply, motherboard, AIB video card, CPU cooler, SSD, etc to buy. What's the best? How can I get the best for my money? While the best way to figure these things out is to research yourself, there's a lot of people out there who have done that thinking and research for you. When building a PC or giving advice, I recommend consulting the Tier Lists found on the Linus Tech Tips forum. Graphics Card Cooling/VRM Tier List Motherboard VRM Tier List for AMD and for Intel These tier lists have a few things in common that make them useful for even the most novice builders:
Are these lists gospel? No. Are these lists the end-all-be-all ranking of PC components? No. Do they make it much, much easier to find the best parts for your money or find alternatives for parts that you didn't even know existed? 100%, YES. Next time someone tells you that you need an expensive EVGA or Corsair PSU for your new build, tell them that the Phanteks AMP is just as good for a better price! Next time someone tells you that you need a Corsair H110i to get good temps on your OC, tell them that the H100x can do the same for cheaper! Next time someone tells you EVGA or Sapphire or bust on your next video card, tell them that Zotac and XFX can get you there for cheaper! Next time someone tells you that you need to a $120 B450 Tomahawk Max for your $85 R5 1600 AF, tell them that you can get something just as solid for a much lower price! Next time someone tells you that you need to buy this or that brand for your SSD, remember that there's 10 solid competitors for it in the same tier! AND SAY IT KNOWING YOU HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON! Don't fall prey to peoples' brand loyalty when the only thing that matters is maximizing your enjoyment for your money. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:15 PM PDT Over the past six months, I've been collecting parts to build my first custom PC as often as I could afford them. As of yesterday, all the parts I needed had arrived, and mere hours ago I began the honestly daunting task. Thanks to the help of a couple of friends, the process went smoother than I could've ever imagined... and it posted right away! The only problem was that I didn't seat one of the ram sticks in fully but that was a super easy fix. Thanks to everyone and everywhere that helped me, especially all the people here in r/buildapc and over at r/buildapcsales! You guys are the bomb! Pics of the build and base bench. PCPartPicker list. I’ve ordered parts, but I’m nervous that I’ll mess up the actual building - tips? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:41 AM PDT I'm "helping" my dad build a PC for his job (aka he's buying the parts and I'm building it lol) and I'm decent with computers, definitely not a newbie to this world. But, this is the first from-parts build for me, and I'm a little nervous despite consuming LTT videos like jelly beans. If anyone has any tips to make a build successful and easy I would much appreciate it. Edit: PCPartPicker list added [link] [comments]
Covid-19 Affecting PC Part Prices? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:13 PM PDT It's been almost a month since that earlier post about Corona affecting PC prices. I did jump the gun and buy some parts for my first build. Not because of news outlets or youtube gurus telling me to, but since I was able to get a bunch of these parts for what I think were priced at a fairly good deal (also a lot of b-stock). I haven't been keeping a log of prices but has anyone seen a drastic/mild increase in prices for certain parts? I haven't bought everything I need yet and I don't really mind waiting or paying a tiny bit more. Quarantines been pretty much giving me a lot more free time so I figured I would just knock it out now. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Best CPU for Cities Skylines and other CPU-heavy games? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:05 PM PDT My i5-6500 is getting a little long in the tooth and I've been out of the PC building-game since 2015. What CPU would you recommend for someone playing CPU-heavy games like Cities Skylines if I had 200-ish bucks to spend (including a new mobo)? A big trend I've noticed now is how good AMDs have gotten, but I've read that they aren't well suited for Skylines. Keeping that in mind, am I better off sticking with an Intel setup? What 16gb 3600mhz ram should I get? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT Im upgrading ram from my last build and realized that 2400mhz is way to slow for my 3700x. What are some good timings that would be good for the cpu for mainly gaming? Thanks :) [link] [comments]
My components to my new build are starting to arrive!! Piker Build: Mistakes Made, Lessons Learned Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:57 PM PDT Greetings All, 11 years ago I build my first computer. But the old battle wagon (with a few upgrades along the way) just doesn't have the spunk to keep up with today's modern life. So it's off to the world of r/buildapc! The main purpose of this computer is to run cities sky.. er autocad/revit. I kept the basic premise driving the design behind my first build: heat kills. This extrapolates into a large case, large cpu cooler, many fans, and staying inside manufacturers specifications (meaning no overclocking for me, as this is way beyond my depth of field). Also don't by top-of-the line/first gen components as the cost to performance ratio, was for me, not worth it. So let's introduce the players: . | 2009 | 2020 :-- | :--: | :--: cpu | i7 920 | i7 9700k mobo | evga x53 sli classified | evga z390 ftw gpu | evga gtx 660 ti | evga rtx 2060 super ram | 12gb ddr3 | 32gb ddr4 drives | 6 hitachi deskstar hhd – raid 1 | 6 samsung evo ssd – raid 1 psu | evga supernova 1000w | evga supernova 1000w case | antec ? atx | phanteks enthoo primo atx benchmark | 1681 | 8593 fps | 10 | 56 stress temps | 88C | 62 C Why the 6 drives in Raid-1? To keep the read / write load on any one drive to a minimum and spread data out for safety. So C: drive gets the os and software, D: drive gets work related data files, E: drive gets games and personal data files. In hindsight, I'm not so sure this logic holds up. I think I could have just created virtual volumes on the primary array and saved myself the cost of 4 drives in each build. Afterall the Raid-1 provides the back-up security / reinstall time saving. Why the monstrous psus? To keep everybody cool, just like little Fonzies. No max loads means no sweat. Why the monstrous cases? To keep that air flow a flowin' Benchmark: The benchmark and fps scores are from 3D Mark Time Spy. I think these numbers are where they are supposed to be for these components. Stress temps: These are gpu temps after running Furmark for 3 minutes. The new rig idles at 32 C gpu temp and 27 to 23 C for the 3 temperatures listed in SpeedFan. The mobo code / temp led is 28 C. That Nocuta ND-15 is the shit. I also ran the Prime95 stress test. Blackscreen shutdown on the 2009 rig. Thought I'd bricked it, but she only lost one shoe. Gave it a couple hours to cool and she rebooted no prob. Sorry old girl, didn't know what I was doing. Lessons learned:
Note on the monitors: Left is a NEC MulitSycn P242w (24" 1920 x 1200) right Samsung CF391 (32" 1920x1080). I bought the Samsung on lark as it was 'inexpensive' at about $250 usd and finally get to upgrade to dual monitor. The NEC was the monitor form my old computer, albeit a recent purchase. These two monitors are very different in look and feel to say the least. The Samsung has taken a bit to get used to but I must say, for these aging eyes, having everything larger is very nice. The screen looks bright and crisp to me although the colors don't seem as deep / vibrant as on the NEC. (just realized I can't post a pic in the post title, so in your mind picture a desk with these monitors on it and the tower tucked under. Also put one or two cats in there fucking shit up) I did a bit of reading in this forum before my build and I want thank the community of r/buildapc very much. I utilized many resources referred by this sub: Logical Increments, PC part picker, Linus Tech, Paul's Hardware, and advice from numerous posts in the forum. As always, I got the worst advice from myself. Thank you all again and may your frame rates ascend to infinity and beyond! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:56 PM PDT I bought a used PC back in August of 2019 and want to upgrade it. I've made the easiest upgrade which was the ram and some peripherals. The main parts I have right now are:
Which would make the most sense to upgrade first the cpu or gpu? Also any recommendations on upgrades would be great as I am fairly new to all of this. [link] [comments]

I bought the GPU from a friend but in new condition. Everything works fine and it's so extremely silent! I love the case, it's sleek, it's functional. Cable management was a breeze. Next, I'm going to upgrade my monitor (27inch, 1080p, 60hz) to an XF270HUA (27 inch, 1440p, 144hz, G-sync-compatible) when it's on sale! [link] [comments]
Ryzen 3400G is criminally underrated. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:56 PM PDT The CPU is pretty good for gaming at 4 cores, and the IGPU is as good or better than a gt 1030. all of this and then add it has a 65W TDP. IDK i just think it's a fascinating piece of computer technology and really want to see a zen 3 edition with DDR5 RAM (the bottleneck for the IGPU is RAM speed) and an IGPU based on NAVI and even better single-thread performance. Just imagine Ryzen 1500X + GTX 1050(maybe even ti) performance in a cool and cheap CPU. i hope AMD delivers and keeps up with the performance upgrades each generation. (i kinda just wanted to ramble about that APU and AMD's APU's in general bc they are my little obsession) [link] [comments]
What happened to the interchanhble PC tower? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 11:34 AM PDT Years ago, I believe it was Nvidia. They announced a PC tower that was going to change PC building. Essentially the tower itself had a bunch of slot and each piece would essentially just plug into the tower. I havent heard or seen anything about this idea. I thought it was a cool idea. Anyone have any information on it? [link] [comments]
Can you buy replacement front panel "screws"? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:51 PM PDT I bought a used PC in a Deepcool Matrexx 55 case. I bought it online and something got damaged in shipping and the front panel won't secure on anymore. There were some broken pieces of plastic and it seems like the connectors holding the front panel on broke. They don't look like screws but just plastic tubes. Can you buy replacements for these? I tried looking online but couldn't find anything on what I was looking for. [link] [comments]
Moving just the windows from 2tb HDD to 500gb SSD Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:51 PM PDT As title says, I just got a 500gb SSD (Samsung 860 EVO) and I want to use this as the drive I boot Windows from + launch a few games from. I want to keep all my other files (documents, pictures, etc.) on the HDD. I've looked and tried many of the solutions including EaseUs and Samsung's own software but they don't let me just move the os. Is there any other tool/trick to do this? [link] [comments]
Please check my PC Part Picker list. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:51 PM PDT I am sorry for posting twice today (17 hours ago) but I posted on the wrong subreddit. I am new to the PC building market and am wondering if all my parts are compatible https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NXCt4n - NOTE I am not getting the 2080ti in that list (just used it as a price mark). I am getting the https://www.amazon.ca/RTX-2080-GeForce-352-Bit-Graphics/dp/B07GJ3ZD69 instead. I am going for a white/black theme. [link] [comments]
Wanting to upgrade after 3-4 years but I've no idea where to start! Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:50 PM PDT Hi! This has been my build for about 3-4 years now I've updated nothing at all in it, other than cramming a few more HDD's in their for Photography and GoPro footage I have in bulk. I've always primarily used my PC for gaming, however recently I've been exporting some projects in Blender and editing in Premier Pro. I've not followed any developments in the PC world really since! My system is starting to show its age now and I'm wanting to get some guidance on what I should update and improve in order to gain a higher FPS count in games such as CoDMW, CSGO (even that shows its age sometimes!) Hope you're all staying safe & cheers for any help! [link] [comments]
Need help with wrong size radiator Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:46 PM PDT I'm switching to a mini itx build, and got all my parts ready. I got a Corsair Hydro H90, on which the radiator and fan is 140mm. The problem is my case (Cooler Master Elite 130) only supports a 120mm fan and radiator in the front, which I forgot to doublecheck. Is it perfectly safe to just drill holes to fit the bigger size (No problem for me) or should I look for a compatible sized cooler? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT Thinking about building a pc. The last time I built one it was 5 years before 64 bit cpus were released. When gaming with your friends meant you had to in the same room. When 512mb hard drives were large. When 1 ghz processors were unaffordable. Man things have changed. I cant wait for my next build. Do I need to format brand new SSD before installing windows? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT So quick question, brain went dead and I forgot. Do I need to format my SSD (brand new in box) before installing windows 10? Or can I just pop the drive in, use my USB to install windows 10 and be good? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT I was just given a Dell Precision Tower 5810. It has 2 Nvidia K2200 GPUs installed in it and am wondering if these would be ok for 1080 gaming. I am thinking of using this as a gaming rig for my son as it was his birthday on march 25th and didnt get him anything special. I dont know much about these prebuilt PCs so any help would be appreciated. He will be playing games such as fortnite and maybe COD: MW. Should I replace these 2 cards with something like a RX 580? It has a 8 pin connector for a gpu so I should be good there. Thanks to any responses! [link] [comments]
Building a new pc, looking for a motherboard. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT Hey guys, first time here. Looking into building a new pc.
