Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:19 AM PST For some time now I've been searching for a new laptop that is both small and light, perfectly suitable for a student. Finally, I believe that HP Envy 13 ( i7-8550U, MX150 2GB, 8 GB RAM) should do the trick. Nonetheless, I don't want to buy it and then decide that I have wasted money. Does anybody have it? Would you recommend it? And if no, do you have other suggestions (somewhere around the same price range) [link] [comments]

Whats the most affordable laptop with the least amount of bloatware? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:21 PM PST I'm trying to find the best one for when taxmas comes around. I'll be using it mostly for Netflix, web browsing, and selling items on my Etsy account. I've had trouble with my laptops getting ridiculously slow within a few months of buying them. The lightest gaming ultrabook: Review of MSI PS42 8RC (1050 Max-Q, 1.22kg, 2.69lb) Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:14 AM PST Tldr: The lightest laptop (by far) capable of playing the newest games in med to high details. About twice as fast in games than heavier NVidia MX150 laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth. Most lightweight ultrabooks either have only integrated graphics, or the low-end NVidia MX150 (eg Razer Blade Stealth), and are unable to play new games even at lowest settings. On the other hand, dedicated gaming laptops are often twice the weight, which is cumbersome when traveling. That puts the MSI PS42 8RC in a unique spot: It features a NVidia GTX 1050 Max-Q which is just fast enough for the newest games in med to high details, while still weighing in at just 1.22kg. This is LESS than the Razer Blade Stealth (1.31kg), which has a slower MX150. The next lightest option with 1050 Max-Q is the ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 UX480FD at 1.60kg. Notebookcheck already has a detailed review on the MX150 version of the MSI PS42, therefore I will only focus on gaming performance of the GTX 1050 Max-Q version. Benchmarks at out-of-the-box settings with newest NVidia driver 417.58:
Benchmarks tuned settings (110mv undervolt, CPU power limit +8W, GPU +100MHZ, VRAM +700MHz):
Comparisson to NVidia MX150 laptops of out-of-box (otb) and tuned performance: I could not find gaming results for the Razer Blade Stealth, therefore I took the fastest MX150 results for gaming tests on notebookcheck, which should be quite similar:
Drawbacks of MSI PS42: · Biggest drawback: no thunderbolt 3, therefore no egpu. · Chassis a bit creaky when pressed upon, although that's probably unavoidable at this weight. · Out of box performance in Cinebench is rather low, as the CPU TDP is limited to 18.9W short term and 15W long term. Using hidden bios settings I was able to increase the TDP, which gained about 17% in cinebench. Conclusion: MSI PS42 8RC is just fast enough for the newest games, while being lighter than many ultrabooks. It is twice as fast as MX150 laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth in games. Drawback is no thunderbolt 3. For me this is the perfect compromise. Edit: added "Shadows of the Tomb Raider" benchmarks [link] [comments]
Laptop HDMI output on 1440p locked to 30 Hz? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:05 PM PST Hey there, mates - just got a quick question for some wiser than me! I ran in to a problem, as I recommended a laptop Asus TUF FX705GE-EW149T (https://www.proshop.dk/2687457 and https://www.asus.com/dk/Laptops/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-FX705/specifications/) to a friend of a friend, with her own company - req were, it should be able to be transported alot, for different assignments, 17,3" screen, 1 TB extra hdd, and hooked up to existing monitors when at the inhouse workstation. Everything went smooth, right up untill we had to connect it to one of their existing monitors, an EV2736w (https://www.eizo.com/products/flexscan/ev2736w/), running 2560x1440p via a HDMI -> DVI cable. Though, my heart skipped a beat, when I couldn't set it to more than 30 hz, and trying a custom resolution did nothing - just black screen. I'm really hoping it's the monitor, somehow, as AFAIK, there's HDMI 2.0 on the laptop, so it should technically be able to do 2560x1440p@60 hz no sweat, right? My honor is at stake! ;) PS. They're gonna get another 1440p monitor for that workstation, so that's why I'm asking, hoping I might get lucky. ;) [link] [comments]
HP ENVY x360 vs HP Spectre x360 Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:52 AM PST Hy. I need to buy computer and i'm choosing between these 2: HP Envy x360 15" i7-8550U, 16GB RAM DDR4, 512 GB SSD, FHD IPS touch screen, Intel UHD 620. Price 1050 € HP Spectre x360 15" i7-8565U, 16GB RAM DDR4, 256 GB SSD, 4K IPS touch screen, GeForce MX150(2GB). Price 1450 € I will use the laptop primary for developing, meetings with clients and for university. So is it worth it to invest 400€ more to buy Spectre? ;) [link] [comments]
Need help buying a laptop for college Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:35 AM PST Hi I am not a very tech savvy person and need a laptop for college. I just need it for essays, notes and research as I have an old MacBook that I use for entertainment. The Mac is super old and slow and heavy and the battery is shot. It's not really a viable option to lug around for classes all the while crossing my fingers that it actually turns on. My budget is $300-$400. If you have any advice or a push in the right direction it will all be greatly appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments]
Laptop repeatedly disconnects from internet around every 10-30 minutes Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:58 AM PST ASUS laptop repeatedly disconnects from the internet and claims that internet is not available while it's working perfectly on other devices. Choosing a laptop with good colour display Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:47 AM PST Hey gang, I've recently begun the search for a new laptop. One thing I recently noticed is that my current machine's (now 5+ years old) display is not nearly as good as my relatively-new phone's display. This is the sort of thing I want to take into account in my decision-making (balanced with price, of course), but I don't know the language surrounding what makes a display "good" or "bad" in terms of how colours are depicted. What should I be looking for in the specs that will help me determine how vivid and true-to-life the laptop's colour representation will be? Thanks! [link] [comments]
ASUS VivoBook S41UN or Zenbook UX331UN? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:26 AM PST Trying to determine which one to purchase, I know that I'd like something portable for schoolwork but with enough power to do some light gaming (SMITE, CSGO, etc.). My only concern with the Zenbook is the $950 price tag, but I was wondering if the other option would be better with the slightly improved specs at the tradeoff of battery life, albeit at a much cheaper price. Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:23 AM PST Hello guys, i bought an Acer nitro 5 three weeks ago, and i have a problem, not about overheating tho. The problem is when i play games the battery discharges, and the orange light comes on, also when its plugged in, i can hear strange noises from HDD or from the usb port when im moving my mouse or typing, i dont know exactly where they come from, but when its on battery i cant hear them. Is it bad charger, or a faulty motherboard? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:28 AM PST "Form" at bottom. I start school this semester for programming and I need a decent laptop to get the job done, but I also want to use it for light gaming. I'm looking at these two laptops at the moment, but the HP is significantly cheaper even with a 1tb HDD + 256gb SSD. They have the same CPU + GPU. The only difference is the screen resolution, at least that I've noticed. Could you help me decide between these two or if you have a recommendation for something else please let me know. Thanks. --Well, it won't let me link the two laptops. They're just links to amazon. One is Lenovo 330 and the other is an HP. They both have Ryzen 5 cpu's and Radeon Vega 8 GPUs. They both have 8gb RAM. The lenovo 330 has a 256gb SSD for $590. The HP I can get a 1tb HDD + 256gb SSD for $550. If you want the links to both message me. -- * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $600 Max, but prefer $500 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'm middle of the road here, but I think I'd choose best specs for the money and deal with the battery issue down the road. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Don't care. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Decent enough to game on, 15? * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No real editing, but would prefer to have something that runs most games at least on low settings. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Vermintide 2, CSGO, Rocket League, Dark Souls 3, Witcher 3. FPS: at least 30. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'll be typing a lot, so decent keyboard. Don't care about touch screen. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:52 PM PST Hello to everyone in this forum. I got a bit of a problem. I bought a MSI laptop GP62MVR about a year ago and it worked perfectly, save for a little overheating, until a few days ago. I found that on a specific place around the keyboard, it began melting and smelling like charred plastic. I went to the recommended service by the manufacturer (since more than a year had passed and had no warranty) The thing is, it is turns on normally, just the right part of the keyboard doesn't respond and after they checked it, they told me they "found" that the motherboard had a shortcircuit (that or the attendant didn't know how to phrase it) Since it still turned on, could still it had a shortcircuit or are this guys just trying to cheat me out of my money? I'm having trouble choosing between two laptops !!! Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:53 AM PST I'm a college student and I was looking for some budget laptops. Things I do : programming, light gaming. Where I live I found two good laptops that fit in my budget. Their specs are, Laptop 1 : Lenovo i5 8250u, 8Gb ddr4 ram, 1TB HDD GPU - MX150 (2 GB gddr5 VRAM) Display - 1366 x 768 TN pannel Laptop 2 : Asus i5 8250u, 8Gb ddr4 ram, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD GPU - MX130 (2 GB gddr5 VRAM) Display - 1920 x 1080 ips pannel I did some research and found that MX130 is almost similar to last gen 940MX, and some small Youtubers also complained that it has over heating issues. Whereas MX150 has more than double the performance of 940MX while consuming same power. Which one would be the best option ?? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:29 AM PST Im getting this model for very cheap but i have heard that fx504 series has throttling issues due to lower tdp set by asus, but this i have heard this mostly for i7 model, is it true for i5 model too? Also does gpu(1060) works as it should or does asus has even set lower tdp for gpu too? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:01 AM PST I'm a senior in college whose Macbook just broke and am in need of another computer. At this point, I don't think I want to spend a ton of money on a new laptop just yet, as I'll probably wait to cash in for a better one later (maybe about a year, depending on how well my new one works). At the moment I'm in between these two: If I buy the Dell, I'd probably go open box. I don't love the price tag, but I know virtually nothing about computers and so I don't know if the extra cash will be worth it, especially if I'm not planning on going long term. I'll just need it for average college student use, although I am hoping to download final draft software (hence another reason why I need to save money, but also need the extra storage). Thanks for any input and advice! [link] [comments]

Help me found a laptop for Photo & Video editing on travel Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:27 AM PST Hello, I'm looking for a good laptop to run Capture One (Lightroom like), Adobe Premiere Pro and some blogging. The major concern is that I buy this new computer for travel purpose. I will go backpacking for 7 months and will take a lot of photo and video. I'd like to process them on the go. 1- Weight 2- Performance (min 8GB RAM and Core i5, better 16GB Core i7) 3- Durability Can you recommend any 13" laptop with these characteristics ? I heard about the Dell XPS 13, must be great but some people complaining about the heat and the fan ? [link] [comments]
