Need a laptop for my 6 year-old - NOT sexy, NOT fun to use, YES durable and affordable.

I'm not thrilled about needing to get my kiddo a computer at such a wee age, but with all his school work and socializing moving online, he (unfortunately) needs something of his own.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$250 max max max (preferably under $200)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes refurbished, would rather not get used.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Don't care
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The fatter the better -- NOTHING THIN or TOUCHSCREEN
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Hell no
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Built in web cam
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
NOT interested in a Chromebook, and would prefer to install Linux
My son needs it for zoom meetings and a little bit of internet. I don't want to get him another screen he'll fall in love with (we have enough of those) ... just a clunky ugly laptop that he can work on.

    Thank you!

Cheapest Possible laptop that can run WoW Shadowlands

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 01:41 AM PDT

I have been using a Dell Inspiron N5030 Laptop for more than a decade but now WoW stopped supporting 32 systems and even though i have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 i can't even open WoW anymore so maybe i have to get a new laptop and i am looking for a cheap one, that can also run some general Steam stuff like Warriors Orochi 4.

    https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/256565 https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/warriors-orochi-4/18223

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • Maybe up to 600 Euro the most but would rather less, as cheap as possible

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Better to be unused

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I always have it wired anyway, would prefer the Keyboard to be silent just like Dell Inspiron N5030 and the battery to work similar to Dell batteries

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • I need it to be similar to Dell Inspiron N5030, if its slightly lighter then its fine but not too much lighter

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • The screen size should be very similar to Dell Inspiron N5030

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Movavi video editor, World of Warcraft Shadowlands, some general Steam stuff like Dynasty Warriors 8 (not the very high requirements)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • World of Warcraft Shadowlands, some general Steam stuff like Dynasty Warriors/Warriors Orochi (not the very high requirements ones), i prefer the FPS to be around 30-60, mostly 30 which is the standard, don't really care for higher than that.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • My most important requirement is for the keyboard to be silent (i will disable the touchpad), like Dell Inspiron 5030, the other overall physical requirements should be similar to Dell Inspiron 5030

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Basically i need a laptop that is as similar to Dell Inspiron N5030 as possible in physical appearance and keyboard silence but to also be able to run WoW Shadowlands and some general Steam stuff.

MSI P65 Creator (2019) seems too cheap for its specs. Am I missing something?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:29 AM PDT

I'm looking for an all-around laptop that's powerful, reliable, and has a great screen. I'm down to MSI P65 Creator and ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7.

Where I am (Belarus), P65 is around $2K and X1 is around $2.5K.

At the same time, with the specs I'm looking at, P65 has twice the RAM, a bigger screen, and a dedicated graphics card. Also, 2019 model comes with an upgraded cooling system. P65 is twice as heavy as X1, and has half the battery life, but those are not concerns for me.

So, am I missing something? Why is P65 so much better equipped and quite a bit cheaper? Is it build quality? Is it going to die on me in two years? Is MSI making Creator series artificially cheap to enter a new niche? Is X1 expensive on the brand alone?

I mean, I know that X1 is hailed a perfect laptop, super reliable, has been on the market for 8 years, updated annually, business darling, and is supposed to last two lifetimes. But the spec is just too modest.

800 or less, homeschooling mom, small business owner & current CS major. Please advise :)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:14 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $800 or less

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

       No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance & battery life would be key. I prefer traditional style laptops over 2 in 1s, chromebooks, etc.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? My current HP laptop is 4.72lbs so I'm not
      very picky in this area.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15in+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, but I am currently going to school for my bachelors of CS, so something that will provide adequate power & durability over the next 3yrs & any programs I may need to utilize during my classes/entry level jobs would be great. We also run a small business & I homeschool our children so something that can handle pretty heavy daily usage.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?NA

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A backlit keyboard & something with better visual performance than my current laptop (see below) would be essential for me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a HP 15 BA079DX with AMD A10-9600P Radeon R5, 6GB DDR4 SD, 1366x768 HD resolution that I bought a few years back. I am not impressed, it was an impulse buy prior to doing any research so I want to make a more informed choice this time, but do feel overwhelmed at all the specs & information out there.

I've seen several people mention the Acer Aspire 5, Swift 3, HP Probook & a professional level Dell? Would any of those stand out above the rest or do I need to switch gears & look elsewhere?

    Thank you so much!

General use non gaming 15'' laptop

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:54 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:
    JPY 100k-150k (USD 1k-1.5k), Japan

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality > performance > battery life > appearance
    Not an ultrabook, not 2-in-1

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Preferably less than 2kg and thinner than 2cm

Do you have a preferred screen size?
    15''

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?
No gaming, no video editing. Only General use & programming (Android studio is the heaviest app I use)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    None.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    SSD 512GB + HDD 1TB, 8GB RAM upgradable to 32GB
Mostly used with external display and keyboard.
    I'm currently choosing between Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (7590) , Lenovo ThinkPad E15, T590, E595, but I'm open to suggestions.
Inspiron is the most expensive one, and it has graphics card I don't need. But I have good experience with Inspiron laptops and like them. Thinkpad E15 seems to be the best match for my needs, but reviews are not great.

iPad 10.2 inch for college note-taking and using windows 10 off a remote machine?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:36 AM PDT

I am entering college next year as a computer engineering major, and I need a note-taking device for classes. I already have a Dell XPS 9570 (FHD model but otherwise top-specced) so I already have a workhorse, now I just something with a touch screen and pen support that provides a very nice note-taking experience and good battery life. I was looking into the surface pro 6, but I don't know if I can bring my self to spend $1000+ on it for what I need. I start looking at iPads and I found a 10.2 inch version for a mere $330 (+100 for apple pencil and +$20 for case) so probably around $450 on amazon that is a real contender). My biggest concerns for any device I get are battery life, reliability and a good note-taking experience, which I know the iPad offers. My high school gives us school issued 9.7 inch 2018 iPads and they are great but the screens a little small, hopefully 10.2 inch will be enough. I would however like to have access to windows 10 as I'll be doing a lot of programming and some CAD, while away from the XPS so I figured I could use Windows remote desktop for when I'm out and about with a keyboard if I need to access files on my XPS or do a bit of coding unexpectedly or if I didn't feel like bringing my XPS. Has anyone used the iPad like this? Would you recommend it/whats been your experience?

    A very long awaited upgrade

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:22 AM PDT

The laptop I've been using for school/work has finally died, at the same time the desktop I use for gaming is less and less able to run the things I want it to, so two birds one stone, I'm looking for a Laptop that can also handle my steam library.

For obvious reasons I'd like to spend as little as possible, but the main thing is having a device that can perform and will last me a while.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1800 Canadian

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Longevity is key

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance , build quality - battery life, form factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Unimportant

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Heavy gaming, light photo/video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly real time/grand strategy games (Total war, Stellaris, CK, HOI4, etc), and RPG's (Witcher3, Divinity2), with a bit of everything else mixed in.

I realize max settings at 60fps is probably dreaming, but that is the dream.

Need a suggestion for a laptop on good price/quality for a sound producer.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:07 AM PDT

Hello, my old PC recently stopped working and after a lot of years, its a hard departure but its time to buy a new one. I always had great trust in ASUS, this last PC was the n56vj model and it held up for maybe 10+ years with constant gaming. Now i mostly work on sound editing and video editing software. Based on this trust i always tend to look for ASUS computers more than others, although im really not sure if the others might be better. Now, i was hoping someone could advice me on what brand i should look for and what models are there that are worth between 700€ - 1000€, or less if there is any, that could be perfect for what i need them to do. Can anyone help?

    A gift for my wife.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:35 AM PDT

budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Virtually no budget, but let's say less than $2,000 USD. I can't imagine what I'm looking for costing more than that.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'd prefer not, but if there's a -must- have out there that is no longer available new, then I'll consider it.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Preferably a 2-In-1, but absolutely open to others. Battery life is very important, as well as performance. Battery life and longevity is the most important, then performance, followed by the actual type of laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's for my wife, so weight is important. She will mostly be using it at home but will likely be taking it to work with her. Preferably less than 5lbs, but absolutely willing to compromise a bit of weight for better performance. Size probably plays into the weight, but size is not particularly a determining factor, as long as it will fit into a back pack, or easily be carried.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No real editing or gaming will occur, but my wife has upwards of 15-20 tabs open on multiple web browsers; as well as several Microsoft office programs running, due to the nature of her work.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Security is very important. She types a lot, so a functional keyboard that will last is important. Absolutely needs at least one USB port, due to needing a card reader.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Nothing pertinent to add.

Laptop for a Designer / Moderate Gamer

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 01:54 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1500€, with possibilities to go higher | France

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A decent battery would be nice, but I will always prefer specs over battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I can handle heavy laptops, my current one is 3 kilos more or less, so this is to not a primordial requirement

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Either 15' or 17', would privilege 15' if it means better specs

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, 3D Modeling (Rhino, SolidWorks) and Rendering (KeyShot), along with light/moderate gaming (that is less important that the forementionned softwares).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As specified before, I'm not running very heavy games. Consider League of Legends, Final Fantasy XV, Metal Gear Solid V... High/Ultra at 60FPS minimum

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? This is the important part for me. I've been using Gaming Laptops for years now (MSI, Asus Rog, and MSI again) and every time I had problems with them because the quality seems sub-par (hinges shouting through the encasing, cracking, etc). So if the computer could be built in a proper, solid way, it would be best, because I'll be carrying it around pretty often. A metal case would, of course, be the best.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I heard good think about HP Spectres and they seem built out of metal but I don't really know about them, if you have some opinion in addition to your suggestions, it would be great. I also know about Lenovo but the prices are usually much cheaper in the UK than in France. Last, I've seen some MSI for "Creators" in metal, but I don't know if I'm ready for them again. Only if they're worth it.

Good Laptop For video editing, graphic design, and streaming(w/ elgato, obs)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:25 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$600-$950(USD) prefer to stay under $1000 if possible

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good performance/speeds, solid battery life. No preference regarding form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not really at all; it doesn't need to look flashy or stylish.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, main purpose/focus will be using programs for video editing and graphic design and streaming with an elgato. Mainly Sony Vegas, adobe illustrator, photoshop, and eventually after effects, etc. Don't need to run the strongest games. That is a plus but not a priority.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No preference. Games like apex/valor any at medium settings would be fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch Screen could be helpful but absolutely not necessary. SSD is preferred. HDMI is preferred as well as an as card slot but that is not necessary as long as it has a solid amount of usb 3 ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Not biased to or excluding any brands just want the best laptop and deal in my budget to get my projects done and/or up and running. If that means waiting a few weeks or a month then that is also fine.

Looking for a ~US$1200 Laptop for linux general use and some gaming

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:01 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Ideally, around ~$1,200 USD, in U.S., but am somewhat flexible on this. Are you open to refurbs/used? Only if it's a ridiculously good deal that I can afford to replace almost immediately How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Not terribly concerned, but I do use my computer in a couple different locations, and want the option to take it on trips, etc. How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care. I'm not going to be carrying it everyday/allday, and the times I do decide to carry it, I'm not going to care about weight/bulk Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15"? larger might be nicer, but I don't think I want to go much smaller Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. some gaming, mostly turn-based RPGs and similar If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not terribly concerned with this, I just don't want to run into an appealing game and have to wait until my next computer upgrade to play it. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I really want at least a ~500GB SSD drive, if it doesn't have one, installing one will be the first thing I do (and part of the reason I'm uncertain on my budget, most I've seen seem to have a 256, which isn't big enough for my purposes, and is just as bad as 128 or nothing from my perspective) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm going to be installing Linux, so I don't really care about what version of Windows comes with it. If it's not terribly inconvenient, I may keep it installed as a dual-boot option, but I'm likely going to end up reformatting the drive at some point. I also tend to like using a silicone keyboard cover, but understand that can cause heat issues with some computers...

Currently using a Dell Inspiron 17, got it back in 2016 or so, and it was pretty good until the GPU went last year, and I've been running it off of the integrated GPU, and it's okay, but it overheats if I open more than a couple Firefox tabs to youtube, so I'm really limited in what I can currently do with it... I've been thinking about trying to repaste the GPU, but don't want to try that until I have a replacement computer ready...

    Thanks for reading

    Drawing laptop + light gaming

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:51 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop for about $650 that I can use as both a drawing laptop with a pen and can also use for light gaming (older games and emulators.) the price of the pen doesn't need to be included. I was looking at a Lenovo yoga book but I'm worried the keyboard would suck for any kind of gaming. I'm not to keen on surface go laptops either as I don't see how you could use it on your lap. Any recommendations? Thanks so much

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Ideally $1,500 or less. Could spend a little more. Are you open to refurbs/used? Want to buy new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance (want to play games on settings other than the lowest for once, build quality, batterylife/form factor (ties for lowest.) Will be using it almost always plugged in. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. Using it pretty much only at home or on occasional trips. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Medium? Sorry lol Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just gaming, mostly single-player stuff no bigger than Skyrim level. But want to play on high settings. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Don't need something getting 60+ on multiplayer but want to have at least some quality. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Just a couple usb slots and I'm good. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Was looking into the new Zephyrus G14 a lot but I want something that won't blast the fans constantly as my current laptop really doesn't do that. Don't care if it's not the latest 2020 model or whatever, just want something decently good. Thanks!

Laptop for better gaming experience - max. approx. AUD$2k (Australia)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:50 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    around $1,500 to $2,000AUD, Australia

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    Ideally it would be new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Understandably all of these things are important except the need as an ultrabook/ 2-in-1 or touch screen type.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness - not so much, but would like it to be on the lighter side.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    approx. 15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I would do some photo editing and gaming, but mostly just browsing the internet.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
These are on my current Steam wishlist as my computer does not perform well enough to run well: The Long Dark, Firewatch, Two Point Hospital. I rarely play AAA games on PC.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    Multi zoned RGB keyboard preferred.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am opened to custom laptops such as Aftershock or Metabox. Not a big fan of Razer.

Thank you very much - really appreciate it if you can help.
