I'm planning on switching to Linux Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:28 AM PDT As Windows finally starts to get on my nerves, I'm thinking more and more often about switching to Linux, but I need some advice here. I decided I'm going to go with either Arch Linux or Ubuntu, but I'm having a bit of a tough time choosing between the two. Could someone please tell me how they compare and which one might be better for me? I plan on mostly learning programming (c++, maybe others, if that matters), making documents, maybe playing some games. This would be my first ever time installing and using Linux so I'm looking for beginner advice, whatever that might be. [link] [comments] |

How To Update The Linux Kernel In Ubuntu Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:05 AM PDT Hi everyone. So by default you cannot usually update the Linux kernel in Ubuntu, which creates a problem if you are using newer hardware that is not supported by older kernels. So after a suggestion from a comment on one of my YouTube videos, I thought it might be useful to produce a quick video on that subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdPpo3AtwY8&feature=youtu.be I will using the Ubuntu Mainline Kernel Installer for this purpose which can be installed using the Terminal by typing the following: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa sudo apt update sudo apt install mainline Once installed, simply launch the application, select the Linux kernel that you wish to install, and reboot. Ubuntu will automatically boot into the most recent Linux kernel but if you want an option to choose a kernel, I recommend installing GRUB Customizer through the terminal. sudo apt install grub-customizer Once installed launch, and navigate to General Settings, Change Boot default entry after to a value higher than 0 seconds, and under advanced settings, change GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE value to 0. Once done, save the configuration. As always if you found this helpful, please consider liking the video and subscribing to my channel for more content like this. Thanks Ryan [link] [comments] |

How would I go about this specific installation setup? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:57 PM PDT Currently on Windows 8.1 installed on a SSD, I also have 3 Hard disks and another SSD. Is there a way I can dual boot and install Manjaro Linux on the second SSD, also having both Windows and Linux use the space of the hard drives? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT Hey all, I'm having issues installing Linux and other distros. My latest issue was installing Mint. After install and reboot, I was stuck in the grub command line. All commands I found on the web didn't work. I've since removed Mint. The biggest issue and frustration Is the distro I tried did not support my wireless card AX200. What would you suggest I do at this point? Should I try another distro? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
[Fedora] Just installed sxhkd and bspwm, having trouble locking my screen Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:23 PM PDT I am trying to figure out how I can lock my screen akin to how in gnome you can do it with 'Super + L'. I can't seem to find any CLI command to lock the screen this way, once I find a command I can just put it in my sxhkdrc. Does anyone now the CLI command for this? [link] [comments] |
Mx Linux fresh install games run poorly Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:58 PM PDT Just installed mx on my brand-new desktop. AMD CPU and and gpu. Csgo hardly runs at all. Like 1 fps. Obviously something isn't right. I thought amd made things so much easier in Linux. It seems like the game isn't using the gpu. Any suggestions? TIA Edit installed the AHS version Cpu is ryzen 7 3700x GPU is Radeon RX 5700xt [link] [comments] |

Looking for a better Task manager in linux. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:25 PM PDT The Task manager in Manjaro XFCE is ok but it is missing some major points. That being the harddrive monitor. It doesn't list any harddrive monitor. I know it seems weird to want it. But, I have caught a couple pieces of malware with it. By sitting idle and noticing that the drives that shouldn't be active are active and I know you are not supposed to worry as much about viruses on linux. But, I assume there will come a time. Having problems with VLC in Manjaro xfce Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:14 PM PDT I have been playing around with Manjaro and when I watch a movie with VLC and then close the movie. VLC will stay open and will not close. It stays open in the system tray area of the XFCE gui. When I right click and tell it to quit it does not respond and it will not open a new MOVIE and it will not continue playing the old movie and even opening VLC and going to open file does not work. I have to restart system. I do not know if this is a manjaro bug or if there is a way to fix it. I do not know the "kill" command for linux. I do not know anything Linux TBH. [link] [comments] |
Migrating totally from Windows (deleting dual boot), need some tips Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:19 AM PDT As I said in the title I'm going to remove Windows on the dual boot because I'm really done with it and his stupid behavior. But I'm really missing some things on Arch that I liked to have on Windows. I know, there are a lot of questions, sorry, but even if you can help me solve one it'd nice <3
And then, some questions just for information, do guys recommend to stick to default Kernel or use some fork for gaming or, in general, what is your tips and experience about that? Is ext4 still 'the go to' or we got something better now? (Using an m.2 NVME and Sata HDD) [link] [comments] |
I installed a gtk theme on xfce and the system tray icons won't display. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:50 PM PDT I installed this icon theme https://www.xfce-look.org/p/1352717/ The icons work elsewhere, but the bluetooth, wifi indicator won't work. How can I fix this so they are recognized? I've tried different folders, even tried dragging in icons from other icon packs that do work, but not really getting anywhere. I like this icon pack, but just need this last bit to work. [link] [comments] |
Bashing my head around to make an FTP work like a normal FTP Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:46 PM PDT Hi, Let me settle the level of pissed off I am by saying I'm ready to take a bullet from this bs. Now, to the real deal. I'm trying to setup an FTP on a Ubuntu 18.04 LTS machine for two directories present in www (apache that is). Permissions work like a charm. I and one friend are going to use it, so two accounts. What does not work like a charm is the unholy motherfucking FTP. I'm using VSFTPD. Installation itself was easy. Everything went fine. Then, I created the two accounts said earlier, added them to the group to have permissions of writing in the directory. So far, going pretty ok. Then, I've enabled the "chroot_local_user=YES" option. I've managed to change "home" directories for the two created account into the www/ folder. I don't care if this is not recommended or anything, I just wanted to keep things straight and simples. Those account will be used only to use the two directory, nothing else. I manage to connect using Filezilla on a Windows 10 machine. I use both local IP and internet IP. Both works. Now, my friends tries to connect, and can't do shit. I've verified with him, nothing stands out. He just can't do anything : everytime he tries to navigate or upload a file, the client disconnect itself (Disconnect because inactivity) we tried to put "0" for the timeout settings in filezilla but instead it does nothing, he can't even connect now. So, I had enough. First I tried to make a passive FTP. Does not work. All ports are open on my internet box. Does not work. Still the same issue. So, I try to put FTPS. Generated Cert and key. Put the right config. Does not work. Now I can't connect to my own FTP, even with the local IP. Worse, everyone is like "use the 22 port" but I can't do that, my internet box only have from 32768 to 42000. No 20. No 21. No 20. Nothing else besides those. And I've been searching, nothing to change the port for SSL. So I'm fucked. I tried to play around options, nothing works. It's been more 6 hours of constant fight now. This is my config : https://pastebin.com/2FMYDm9D What I need to do. I beg you. Really, I can't take it anymore. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW THIS SHIT WORKS. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:44 AM PDT I am doing my Linux+ on linuxacademy.com and am learning about dracut. I just have a quick question. I know some systems have a special script written by the devs for configuring initramfs, how often is dracut usable? Like does every system offer it? Or are there some systems that dracut won't work on? Sorry if this is a bad question... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:41 AM PDT Any help in resolving this issue is very appreciated. Everything was working fine and I could easily switch my mouse between my Windows and Ubuntu computer. However, one night I left my computer running over night, and in the morning the mouse had stopped working. This also happens when I leave the computer idle for long time. When I come back, the mouse will not work even if it the bluetooth menu shows it as paired. I'm hoping this is not an issue with the mouse. [link] [comments] |

How to not run anaconda3 python? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:55 AM PDT I want to be able to run python3 without anaconda but still be able to start jupyter-notebook without typing the whole anaconda path. I have this in my .bashrc file:
When I run python3 in the terminal it starts anaconda's python, but here I have my path to python3 set first. I had it in the same line after the python path too, but that did not work either. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Opening google search results in chrome from terminal Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:44 AM PDT I really like googler, but what I can't seem to figure out is how to run a search in google that opens a window with the results displayed? I'm pretty new to scripting but I'm also about to get my degree in CS so I'm OK with more complex explanations or suggestions. [link] [comments] |
