    Mobile internet for laptop

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:23 AM PDT

I'm on the road a lot for work and would like to get internet access for my laptop. My phone is company issued and I don't want to use it as a hotspot, so I was wanting to know how I would get that set up or who offers to do that service.

    Lenovo G50-70 SSD/RAM upgrade

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:29 PM PDT

I just purchased a Lenovo G50-70 Intel i3 from eBay.

I want to upgrade the 500 gb hard drive to at least a 250 gb SSD.

I want to upgrade the ram from 6 gb to 16 gb.

This laptop will be used for running visual code studio, light photoshop & illustrator. (I have a desktop for gaming).

I want to do these upgrades within a reasonable budget... will a 250gb SSD be enough to run my OS/programs? I'm thinking about going to eBay for the RAM- anyone have past experience with purchasing parts like that on eBay?

    Thanks!

Display refresh rate changes when plugging/unplugging the charger. Any help appreciated!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I have a Lenovo thinkpad X250 and a thinkpad T440s, and they both change from 60Hz to 50Hz when I'm unplugging the charger and that wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that it makes the display flash off for a couple of seconds. The same thing happens when I plug in the charger, except the other way around. So it goes from 50Hz to 60Hz. I've tried setting the refresh rate to 60 while I'm on battery power and also as I'm plugged in with the hope that it will stay set at 60 for both charging and not charging, but it keeps changing every time I plug/unplug the charger. Also have tried changing it in the intel graphics command center to no avail. Any help appreciated!

    Laptops with good webcam privacy

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I was wondering if anyone knows any laptops that include a webcam cover or webcam kill switch. Or any other laptops like the HUAWEI MateBook which include a pop-up webcam.

I understand that I can have a webcam cover, I use one on my phone, but it often falls off or breaks after about a month of coming in and out of my pocket, so I would prefer a more flush solution for my laptop.

    Thanks a lot

    Ports on laptop getting looser

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:33 PM PDT

So I've had my laptop for over 2 years now and the ports like the audio input & output and the USBs are getting pretty loose, meaning that the cords pull out of the ports a lot easier. Is this a problem with the cords or the ports? How can I make the ports tighter? I can't afford to buy a new laptop and I want this one to last for a lot longer.

    Laptop can't find wifi networks

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:10 PM PDT

I own an Asus laptop. It can't find the wifi networks sometimes, but usually it fixes after I restart it. However that isn't working right now and it's been like this for 24 hours now. The troubleshooter says it's because I have to plug in an Ethernet cable but i don't own one. What can I do?

Looking for a laptop around £400-£500 for music production and general use.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Does anyone have any recommendations? Is £500 too little for a decent laptop? I was originally looking at an acer aspire ryzen 5 8gb 2tb but I have seen a couple of bad reviews. Also been looking at the matebook D 2020.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    -£500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    -preferably new-

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-all rounder maybe. Leaning towards 8gb ram etc.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    -not really

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -medium sized

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-music production and office programs. Maybe sims too

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    nothing major just sims etc.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    none

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking for a new laptop. Something I can work, AND play hefty games on.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:10 PM PDT

I have to stay under $1k. I need a known and trusted brand. Something I can use for years and still remain reliable. NO APPLE PRODUCTS. I'm not an "Apple hater", I just know it's not what I'm looking for. Please help and give any recommendations you have. I plan on playing games like Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:09 AM PDT

Hi I know this is a dumb question but I just want to know which one of these two is better? I am buying a laptop and it's my first one so I didn't have the chance to test first hand which of these is better. Thank you so much I hope you will answer me seriously

    How do I break a Raid 0?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:43 PM PDT

I have an Acer Swift 3, one 1TB HDD and one 128 GB SSD, I accidentally set up a raid 0 while playing around with iRST. I formatted my drives and uninstalled Windows to see if it would set back up again into single drives, but it didn't work, and after re installing Windows, the laptop is very much slower than before. I also scored very low on the benchmarks I did for the Raid set-up.

Is there any chance I can revert this back and get back single drives?

    BIOS pictures

Also, after reinstalling Windows, I cannot find iRST. How do I get it back?

Is 14 inch ideal size for a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:42 AM PDT

I am really interested in the just released Asus G14 but I am really confused. I think 14 inch may be too small for gaming. What you think guys, I should go for a 14 inch Asus G14 or 15 inch Asus G15 gaming laptop?

    Purchasing advice!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:19 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade to a new laptop and need some help finding what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to find something around $600-$800 that will be able to run The Sims 4 PLUS 4/5 expansion packs. The minimum requirements for the BASE game are: Dual-core processor with +2.3GHz 4GB RAM Intel HD 4000+ Which is easy to find.

But the recommended requirements to run ALL the expansion packs (8 total) are: Quad-core processor with +3GHz NVIDIA GTX 960M beyond + 8GHB RAM

Any helpful recommendations or advice would be awesome 🤘🏼

    Asus X540S patchy wi-fi

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:36 AM PDT

So for the longest time now I've been having problems with the Wi-Fi connection on my ASUS laptop. While I'm not super close to the router, there is a Nintendo switch, smart TV and iPhone that all have no problems getting 2/3 bars of signal and a a different laptop two rooms over that also has 0 problems connecting.

Regardless of the laptops position in this room, it can have 3 bars of connection, 2 bars or sometimes just one. And sometimes it will just say it's unable to connect despite the router being in range and listed as having 2 or sometimes even 3 bars.

Restarting the computer always temporarily fixes this but it will always eventually lose connection. Any ideas guys. I know drivers might be a place to start? But I'm not sure where is a safe place to download them...?
