Looking for a new laptop, need suggestions. Desired specs in body

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:30 AM PDT

Hey everyone. I'm currently shopping around for a new laptop since mine is dead. I'd use it mainly for work and light personal stuff (browsing the internet, videos etc.).

Some of the programs I use for work are a little RAM intensive so I'm looking for 16gb of RAM, and some good processing power so probably a 9th gen. Solid state is a must and 500 gb is perfect. I was currently looking into the Asus zen book or Dell XPS. Any recommendations? Thanks!

    Inflated battery

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:19 AM PDT

Im using a dell 7567 and my battery is inflated, should i just remove it and continue to use? I replaced my first battery (which is also inflated after 2 years of usage) with this one early 2019 and now it is inflated. Is there any risk that my laptop might fell or something?

    Dell XPS 13 Capabilities?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Hello all, I'm buying a laptop and have my sights set on the 2020 Dell XPS 13. Specs are at a minimum due to price:

    • 10th Gen i5-1035G1 CPU
    • Intel UHD graphics (integrated)
    • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
    • 8GB 3733MHz LPDDR4x RAM

I'm pretty much wondering whether this will be able to run light games like Terraria, Stardew Valley, and Starbound. Another thing I'm interested in is some game development, likely with GameMaker Studio 2 and Visual Studio Code. Are these reasonable expectations? I'd be happy to answer any more questions! Thank you!

Razer Blade 15 vs Lenovo 540/740 vs Zephyrus G14

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop I can take to school next year that has over 4 hours of battery life. Initially, I was quite interested in the Blade because it was a couple hundred more expensive with the same specs but has better build quality and thunderbolt 3 (I might get an eGPU in the future.) I then found out about Lenovo's student discounts and that they offered an RTX 2080 y540 for $1990 AUD (35% off). Now I'm unsure. I've also heard good things about the G14 but it hasn't released yet so I don't know what it costs. The Lenovo Y740 with same specs just seems more expensive for the same thing but tell me otherwise if it's better.

    RAM Upgrade Question

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I have an Acer Nitro 5 and I want to upgrade my RAM. Currently I have one 8GB stick of 2133 MHz and 1.2V of memory. I am considering buying another 8GB 2133 MHz 1.2V stick. They are different brands but I don't think that would be a problem. Does my second memory stick have to match in brand, speed, voltage, etc? For example, can I get a faster stick?

    RAM I currently have: A-DATA Technology AO1P21FC8T1-BSKS 8GB

    RAM I want to buy: A-Tech 8GB DDR4 2133 MHz

My HP laptop is terrible and it hasn’t even been a year since I’ve purchased it

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:19 PM PDT

I bought a HP Pavilion 15 and from the very start the battery life was terrible. It was around 4 hours on battery saver. Now it lasts 2-3 hours on battery saver. I've also noticed the laptop overheats a lot even when I'm just browsing the web. The fan is also loud.

The advertised battery life for the laptop was 12 hours.

I bought the laptop from Costco and it's been more than 90 days. I don't know what to do. The laptop cost over $1000 and I don't have the money to buy another laptop. So what should I do?

    Here are some details on what I'm looking for;

    • I really like the ones that folds over into a tablet
    • Battery life and good sound are important
    • Must be available in Canada
    • Budget up to ~$1500CAD
    • Trying to stay away from Mac (too $$&)

Laptop for <$950 in the US

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:13 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      950 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

1-Performance, #2-Build Quality; Form Factor and Battery life are non-factors.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not Important at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, but I would prefer a native resolution of 1080p

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming: DCS World, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, and X-Plane 11

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      1080p, Medium, 45 FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable Build Quality, Good Cooling system

    CPU: i5-7300HQ,-8300H, i7-7700HQ,-9750H or better(AMD equivalent)

RAM: 16 GB DDR4. If 8 GB, then it should be easily upgradable to 16.

Storage: At least a 256 GB SSD (no HDD)

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 series, 1070 series, 1660 series, RTX 2060 series (or AMD equivalent; not lower because performance, not higher because price)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Please refer to these min. and recommended spec charts: 1, 2. Disregard storage space requirements. Feel free to recommend a similar spec desktop, but lower the price threshold by a little bit to account for the increased power usage, keyboard, and monitor.

Lenovo Legion 5 - More evidence for the existence of the RTX 2060 model + Early Russian pricing

Lenovo Legion 5 - More evidence for the existence of the RTX 2060 model + Early Russian pricing

    So I've found this:

    Source: https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=240&t=6077935

It's in Chinese so if anyone can translate it to us that would be great. Still you can tell that the R7000 and R7000P models (AKA 15ARH05/H) do offer the RTX 2060 option.

It's important to note that some reviewers asked Lenovo about this and they said it doesn't apply to the USA. So you will have to wait longer to see if anything progresses.

    More clues:

Notebookcheck - Clues point to existence of a Lenovo Legion 5 with AMD Ryzen 4000-H and RTX 2060, but that may have been shelved

    Lenovo Legion 5-15ARH05 spec sheet

    Lenovo Singapore - Legion 5

    Lenovo's press release

Regarding pricing, I've found this: https://www.novo-market.ru/products/noutbuki-i-ultrabuki/notebook-legion/legion-5-series/

The least expensive Legion 5 model listed (Ryzen 5 4600H, 16GB, GTX 1650 Ti) is for 94580 rub. which is equivalent to $1,269.78, though keep in mind there are even lower tier GPU/RAM/storage options and this also might be expensive because of customs/import taxes in Russia (or just very early pricing), and Lenovo said in their press release that the starting price is $759.99 (that will probably be for the model with 4600H, 8GB, GTX 1650).

    So what do you think?
