Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:28 PM PDT Original: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/frxn9x/help_my_wife_is_going_to_kill_me/ UPDATE: Hey all. I'm the guy who was trying to avoid getting killed by his wife since I'd refused to upgrade our shitty SBG6580 that I found at a Goodwill like 10 years ago. I guess I was living ignorantly all this time, because what I have now is WOW. Thank you all for your advice! I wasn't able to wait and order online, as wife had a knife to my throat. I did some shopping online to compare prices, and my local Office Depot carried everything I needed with the right price after using price matching.
So what do you do when you purchase a new shiny car? This morning I went into my Xfinity account and found an offer for 600D/15U for only $10 more. More WOW. I'm not losing a single bit of speed regardless of where I'm testing in my apartment. Awesome stuff. Thank you all again for the tips. We needed some positive in our house among all of the chaos in our worlds. Stay safe and thank you again. [link] [comments] |
Cell phone signal boosters. How many Mbps should it take up? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:42 AM PDT I have spectrum cable with the 400Mbps plan, yet every speed test I've done (at 4am) averaged about 180, and never went over 200. I have my own modem, an ARRIS Surfboard (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, a cell phone signal booster from T-mobile, and an older model Apple Time Capsule router. So before I call and complain, how many Mbps should the cell booster be taking up? Follow up question: now with WiFi calling built into my phone (iPhone X) do I even need a signal booster anymore? ASUS RT-AC86U vs NETGEAR X4S R7800 Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:34 PM PDT Hey everyone, Been doing a bit of research over the past two days for a new mid-range router, and I am torn between the AC86U and R7800. Based on the research I've done on Reddit and on SNBForums, both seem like solid routers, with the following differences:
I am not really one who would use VPN, which folks who have AC86U claim it works very well. I would love just a strong, solid router that I don't need to customize too much (besides either Merlin or Voxel custom firmware), and while it seems like the R7800 is the winner with that description, I am worried on the latest Voxel update that was released and if I am selling myself short with buying the X4S in 2020 (when I should be going probably with the newer model of router in the AC86U). Does anyone have other opinions or advice on if they have used both, or if I am missing something in my list that I should really be considering? I do live in a house (three stories, one basement) with the router living on the first story. My current router is ASUS N66U and it worked great (so I do like ASUS routers), but I know not every ASUS router is the same. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 03:14 PM PDT Hi, I have a Unifi question. I purchased a USG, CloudKey Gen2+, and a nanoHD AP. I plugged the Ethernet cable from my modem into the USG (WAN), then cabled from the LAN port on the USG to my switch, and from the switch into the CloudKey. The CloudKey never connected to the internet. I tried using the app, which found the controller, but it never got connected to the internet. That's issue number one. Issue number two: Now the LAN port on the USG appears to be dead. The switch also appears to be dead. Both devices power on, and the CONSOLE port on the USG appears to be working (at least it lights up), but the LAN port has no lights at all. The switch's POE works (powers the CloudKey), and the switch's 'power' light works, but no other lights work – no 'activity', no other green lights at all from the switch. I reverted back to my Google Nest Wifi configuration, which is back up and running. Did I somehow fry my USG and/or switch? Can I reset either one? Is there some obvious step I'm missing? Should I return the switch and get a Unifi switch? My current switch is a Cisco sg110-24 (16 port switch. After reading all of the rave reviews about Unifi gear I'm eager to try it out. Thanks for taking a look. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:21 PM PDT I'm getting ~700MB/s with my MB8600+RT2600ac thanks to the advice of this subreddit. Now that everything is work from home, my office connection sucks and I get <20MB/s (sometimes <10MB/s). What's the best way to solve this? Mesh network? What exactly does that mean? I was thinking of buying the MR2200 ac to help. I'm new to all this so any advice would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Subnet loses it's ip after awhile, what's the problem? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:19 PM PDT Okay, so this a pretty technical question. At least for me, my knowledge on networks is pretty limited. I will outline what is my main goal, what i have tried and what i believe to be the problem. Main goal: I work using a voice over ip application (nextiva) on my phone. The app currently doesn't work with my isp provided rourter/modem (Huawei HG8245H), i can't received nor make calls if i'm on my wifi. I believe this due to my ALG configuration, the app need this to be disabled. My main router has it enabled by default and it doesn't allow me to disable it (it's greyd out). So my main goal is to make the app on my phone work on my wifi, which i believe translate to me being able to disable the ALG option. What i have done: A coworker of mine suggested to buy a new router that allows me to disable the ALG option (it worked for him, so i must be doing something wrong somewhere). I brought a Netgear WNR3500L for this task. As i get the internet from a fiber optic connection which the second router doesn't support (the Netgear one) i must still use the main router as my modem (i must say my main router works as intended, all devices connect to it have internet). My research made me believe i need to create subnet from this second router (a "client bridge" according to this subreddit guide for beginners) in which i disabled the ALG option, so any device that is connected to the subnet coming from this second router will work with the Nextiva app because it has the ALG option disabled (spoiler: it does work). To do this, i configured my main router IP address as 10.0.1.1 (here is a picture). So DHCP is enable and the IP range goes from 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.24 . After this is done, i connect my PC to the second router (which isn't connected to anything else) with a Ethernet cable, here i configured the second router as following (picture): IP address: 10.0.2.1; IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (same as main router); DHCP IP range goes from 10.0.2.2 to 10.0.2.24 . After i apply this configuration, set up the wifi SSID and password (different than my main router wifi) and i disable the ALG option (save and apply). I connect the main router LAN port to the second router WAN port. My PC which is connected to the second router gets internet (ip config shows my second router default gateway 10.0.2.1) The wifi networks, i can connect with my cellphone and use the nextiva app as intended. The issue is this only last for about 10 minutes, after that the second router subnet dies and ip config (on my pc) shows default gateway as my mains router's (10.0.1.1). I really don't know what causes the subnet to die (maybe an IP conflict); i really don't know enough of this topic to figure out the issue. I tried to be as explicit as i can, if you guys have any more question I'd be happy to answer. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Replacing AirTies wifi mesh installed by ISP Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:39 PM PDT Hey all, my in-laws were having dead spots in their house so their service provider installed a mesh wifi system with Airties devices. They are being charged a per month PER DEVICE "rental fee", So I'm setting them up with their own system. I do light IT in my job but have never set up a mesh system, so wanted to check here before I mess anything up. Their ISP is United Communications. They set my in-laws up with 3 AirTies 4920 devices. Their router is a Zyxel that's wired through their house with Ethernet ports where the AirTies connect in. Is there anything special I need to know or can I just buy some TP-Link Deco devices and swap them out without much hassle? I'm still doing research but any advice would be helpful! Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:38 PM PDT I'm trying to port forward for Minecraft to play wif a couple of my friends. However, after I setup the ports and check whether it is open on websites such as portcheckers.com and nowyouseeme.org. It seems that I've failed and the reason stated on the website is connection refused. But there seems to be no trouble when I port forward for torrent. Does anyone have a clue what might happen? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:10 PM PDT i recently changed my plan to 200 mbps and im using a netgear cm700 modem and just purchased a netgear ac750 dual band wifi router. My modem is fine with the 200 down but from looking around it seems that my router is the issue. I only get about 80 down on the 5Ghz. Do you think TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 would suffice or any recommendations? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Is Linksys seamless Roaming a game changer with WiFi extenders? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:10 PM PDT I just upgraded to Linksys EA8500 Max-stream router, so far I love but I still have dead spots in my home. Wired connection is impossible unless I am willing to drill have the wall of my house. I read that Linksys has the RE7000 range extender that have seamless roaming with my max stream router. I have a good deal with the RE6300 extender which is less than half the price and I believe better than what I need. My questions is if I setup the Extender with the same SSID as my router, would the RE7000 make a huge difference in roaming compared to other extenders like the RE6300? [link] [comments] |
Accessing Local IP & Port When Connected via OpenVPN Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:06 PM PDT I have an Asus router with Merlin firmware running an OpenVPN server. It's set to a default subnet somewhere around 10.8.0.0. I'm running stock 192.168. Whenever I connect via vpn, all I'm really able to do is navigate to my routers admin page in a browser, or RDP/telnet/ssh directly into something. What I can't get to work is the web ui for transmission to load in a browser tab or app while connected via VPN. Can anyone explain to me why? It's just a port on an IP. I believe it is something to do with the opposing subnets and firewall rules maybe? Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I‘m looking for a new Wi-Fi Router Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:58 PM PDT Hey guys, i'm looking to upgrade my current Router to a new one and need some advice from you guys. Currently I am using a TP-Link WR940N as a Access Point in my Room. It used to work well, but since a couple of weeks im getting really slow Wi-Fi on my Macbook and iPhone. So I was thinking about upgrading my Router to one which supports 5Ghz Wi-Fi. Im living in a multi-level house and the Modem/Router is on the ground floor. In my room I have a ethernet cable which is connected to my current Wi-Fi Router and acts as a AP. I was looking on Amazon and found these three models: - ASUS RT-AC53 - Netgear R6120 - TP-Link Archer C6 Also while researching I read about the Tenda C10, can anyone recommed this one? Tbh I never heard about this brand and it's not really common here in Germany. I'm mostly using the Wi-Fi to stream movies, surf the internet and casual gaming on my PS4. Thanks in advance! Please help explain this to me because I’m not getting it. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:57 PM PDT The question is... Here is a configuration on a home network computing device: IP Address: 172.16.2.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0 Default Gateway: 172.16.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 Which of the following changes will allow the computing device to communicate properly? A. Change the default gateway to 172.16.3.1 B. Change the netmask 255.255.255.0 C. Change the WINS to 172.17.4.136 D. Change the DNS to 172.16.1.100 I answered D and got it wrong. I want to know what was right and how to get to that answer. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Any benefit to replacing the Xfinity Gateway if I don't have to pay for the rental fees? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT My HOA fees includes Xfinity and covers all charges, including the rental fee for the Xfinity Gateway. With that in mind, would there be any benefit to replace my gateway for something like the NETGEAR Nighthawk CM1100 and a new router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:52 PM PDT Ok, so I've researched reddit and the interwebs a lot in order to create a moca network in my home, but I'm having trouble getting it to work. Here's what I have and I would love any advice you all can offer. Sorry in advance for not including any pics. I'll try to explain the best I can. Coming in from outside the house, I have a POE filter attached to the input of a 4-way splitter, and then cable for four rooms of the house in the output spots. The splitter I'm using here is a Holland 4-way Moca splitter. Then, in my office I have the the cable from the wall split with a Legend 2-way moca splitter. Once split, I followed this guide to connect my GoCoax 2.5 Moca and my Arris modemtm1602 and Apple AirPort Extreme. https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-set-up-a-coax-MoCA-network/ The Arris router supposedly has a moca filter built in so I did not add an additional POE filter (maybe this is where I went wrong??). With those things connecting things were looking good so I proceeded. I put a second GoCoax moca up in the master bedroom and connected that to an older Apple Time Capsule that I had been using as a wifi bridge up till this point. Then, I connected my Apple TV to that Time Capsule over ethernet. After a bit of a wait, it worked great and my AppleTV said I was connected over ethernet and worked nice and zippy. I did an internet speed test in that room, but the wifi wasn't any stronger than it had been before when the Time Capsule had been used as a wifi bridge in a different room. (Is it the old time capsule that's a problem here?). However, ethernet was working and wifi was connected so I was like....cool, it's all working. Then, I connected another GoCoax out in my garage to the coax there. To that I connected an airport express, and it looked like it was all working fine and then everything kind of crapped out. But it was weird. The AppleTV connected by wifi in the basement slowed to a crawl al of the sudden, but wifi on the main floor was just fine. But my Airport Utility app said that both the Time Capsule in the bedroom and the Airport Express in the garage were flaking out big time. Any thoughts or ideas or questions to get me towards a fix for this? [link] [comments] |

Just discovered I had Ethernet wired in my home -- need help setting up Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:02 PM PDT Hey all, I am new here. Looking for some help in understanding how I connect my router in my study -> big network patch switch thing in my closet -> a bedroom upstairs. I have tried connecting my router to the ethernet port in the wall and having that wire connect to the IN jack in the panel, but I am not seeing anything light up on the router indicating it has any data flow. https://imgur.com/a/k56sz17 here are some images. Having issues with our home WiFi. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:55 PM PDT Our house is around 1500 SQ feet and is a two story house in a neighborhood. The neighborhood is pretty tightly packed(10 yards or so between houses). Currently we are running the default frontier router but we did have a ASUS RT-AC1750 router that we were using and even tried a Netgear nighthawk AC2300 router (given this was for a very short time). The router is currently upstairs above the garage (not ideal but that's where they put the connection cable in). The connection just seems super unstable. We have a 500 down and 500 up plan and that's what I get on my desktop wired directly from the router. Downstairs is where it suffers the most. Sometimes it's at 50 down which is totally fine but at other times it dips down to less than 1, at times it even cuts off completely. We have tried a range extender and it helps a little but not a ton. I don't like that it's on a separate wifi channel as it makes it a pain switching between the main one and the extension. As far as devices go we have 3 smart TV's, 3 smart phones, 2 laptops, 1 desktop (wired), 4 smart speakers (3 google 1 Amazon), and 8 smart bulbs that run on wifi. I'm thinking about getting either a wifi 6 router or a mesh system. Do you guys think either of these would help? Or do you have any other solutions? [link] [comments] |
TP-Link Mesh network recommendation Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:18 AM PDT Does anybody have a recommendation for a TP-Link Fiber Modem/Router that can integrate with their Mesh networking systems. I have multiple Deco E4's and it seems a waste to not have the modem integrate directly. Right now, my modem has one wireless network and the Deco E4's make up their own mesh network [link] [comments] |
Need help getting squid reverse proxy to let rocket chat app in to network Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:04 PM PDT I have a question posted on the netgate forum as well, and wanted to bring it over here for more exposure. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:42 PM PDT So my dad made an Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors and a Cat6 cable. My mom just bought a WiFi booster and it had an Ethernet port. Help! 5Ghz Band with High Packet Loss Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:13 PM PDT Looking for help to figure out why my 5 Ghz band has such high packet loss. I'm using https://packetlosstest.com/, and I average 90% packet loss with default settings and over a duration of 60 seconds. When I run https://www.speedtest.net/result/9222553071, I'm able to average download of 500 Mbps with 40 Mbps upload. For the 2.4 Ghz band, it is much more stable. I do not experience any packet loss. I've reset my equipment and still get the same result. I have a Netgear RAX 120, if that's any help. Across devices such as my iPad, iPhone, and PC, I get the same results. Any pointers for things for me to try? Thanks!!! [link] [comments] |
WiFi and Ethernet quality has degraded since adding access point Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:10 PM PDT Previous setup: Spectrum ISP Netgear CM700 modem Nighthawk R7500v2 router with DD-WRT custom firmware, hardwired to two D-Link switches, one being downstairs, allowing for pretty much everything in the house to be hardwired except for mobile devices and 2 fire sticks Quality: both wired and wireless quality were great. I was just seeing some random drops with WiFi but they were happening once or twice a week max. Every once in a while I would see buffering issues but everything has been increasing in frequency. Decided to upgrade as this router is now 3 years old and figured I could enhance my wifi by having the Nighthawk as the access point downstairs where the switch was and a new Asus AC2900/86u which was from what I read on multiple reviews and comparison sites, supposedly better than the Nighthawk and with Merlin firmware would be golden. So the setup is the same except the upstairs main router is the new Asus and the Nighthawk is downstairs as an access point. The performance since the change has been degrading each and every day. Slower and slower speeds on mobile devices until complete WiFi drops. Continuous drops on Ethernet to all wired devices. Tons of buffering. 240p automatic quality being chosen by Netflix and YouTube. It's just been miserable. Wanting to troubleshoot before I return to my previous setup, what could be the issue? Are there specific settings that need to be enabled for the access point that are causing problems? Should I switch which one is the access point? Is there another more ideal setup to have? It's crazy to me that performance could be so bad with two great routers versus just the one. I'm sure I screwed up somewhere as I've never tried to have an access point before. [link] [comments] |
