How much should I pay my friend for building a pc?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 03:13 PM PDT

If this isn't allowed in this subreddit, I apologize and it can be removed.

My best friends brother has built his own desktop and is helping me build one for myself. It'll be based off my best friends, which cost between $600-$700.

She didn't pay because she's his sister, but him and I aren't super close so obviously I should. He hasn't mentioned it yet, but I want to make sure I have the money before we start so I'm saving up. If I ask him outright he'll say no but I know the family so I'll have ways to give it to him.

I know nothing about computers so he's offered to help me do everything, including finding the pieces that best suit my needs. Literally all I'm doing is picking what I need based off his research and paying, he's doing everything else. I'll be ordering the parts he tells me to and giving them to him. I don't know how many hours it'll take, I don't need it until September so I'm in no rush and he probably won't keep track of hours.

So my question is how much is a good price to pay him, based on him building the whole thing and doing all the research? Thanks!

Would this be good enough for 1440p 144hz gaming? ($1000 PC)

(Kind of) stolen from a Bitwit build video, was wondering if it would be good enough to video edit on and to play Minecraft on 1440p at 144hz, would I have to spend more on parts to achieve this?

    Thanks in advance.

Deciding to build or buy prebuilt PC

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:41 PM PDT

Hey Everyone, this is my first time on Reddit so hope this is a good spot to post. I have recently been wanting to switch to PC for gaming, and wanted to learn how to build my own Pc. I started looking and it seems as tho there are some good Prebuilt options for basically the same price as building, of course I could be wrong here. So the prebuilt I was looking at was NZXT starter and starter plus PC.

The main two things I would use it for is gaming, and editing, my wife is UX Designer and would use it some and I would use Adobe for video editing. Budget is around $500-$1000. Hoping I can get some advice, I think I would enjoy building, I have done a lot of research but just very limited knowledge on what parts are good for what price and usage.
    So to sum it up:
Primary usage would be gaming, with the ability to do some video editing. Nothing crazy as my budget is small but would love the ability to upgrade in the future.

    Any advice?

Budget 1080 144hz monitor or LG 27gl850 panel + a controller from AliExpress

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:43 AM PDT

Hi, I want some advice on choosing between Viotek GN24C and a DIY LG 27gl850. I already have a 27gl850 panel without LCD controller in hand. I found this controller board from Aliexpress. Its is 100% compatible but it is not cheap. I am comfortable doing this but, is it worth it to do so or the risk of getting slow response times or other problems is too high?
    Thanks in advance.

Help Needed! PC built here suddenly getting black screen of death

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:22 PM PDT

Hi everybody! I built my first PC here with the help of this community about seven years ago. It was a wonderful experience and I really appreciated all the help, and I unfortunately have to come back to ask for help again.

Here is the build you guys helped me come up with back in the day!

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Cygne/saved/#view=33f8TW

Unfortunately today I noticed some strange crashes and now my PC won't start.

Here's as much detail as I can give:

    Current Setup

Compared to the build linked above, I have a couple changes

    • I'm now running on Windows 10
    • I upgraded my boot drive to SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive. I also picked up an extra used HDD.
    • My CPU fan crapped out so I replaced it with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - CPU Cooler with 4 Direct Contact Heatpipes
    • In addition to the Samsung monitor in the build I am using a LD TV as a monitor (I moved and the only place I could fit the TV was on my desk :P) Since there is only one HDMI slot in this GPU, the TV is plugged into the motherboard + uses integrated graphics by default

    Recent Changes

    • I downloaded City Skylines because they were doing a free play weekend and it ran like crap, until I realized that since the TV was set as my main display, the game was running on integrated graphics. The games I usually play you can choose the display, so I never had this issue before. So I switched my main display to the Samsung monitor which is plugged into the GPU and it ran fine, and the computer also ran fine for several days.
    • I noticed, though, that the video quality when recording on OBS was significantly worse than usual, so I tested out dxtory which I had downloaded before to see how it ran, and its quality was fine. Puzzled, I switched back my default display to the TV and confirmed the OBS recorded as usual.
    • I tried rendering some of the test videos from dxtory with my video editing software Sony Movie Studio 15 Platinum, to see if it was still the case that videos shot in dxtory wouldn't render correctly. (This was the main reason I still used OBS after buying dxtory)
    • My issues started happening the next day.

    Crashes

    • Starting today my computer started crashing in a way I had never seen before.
    • The computer went into a total freeze on my TV screen and there was a strange pattern/color change on the Samsung monitor.
    • I figured with the visual distortion on the Samsung monitor there may be a GPU issue. I rebooted and it worked fine for a bit, and then happened again.
    • Same thing happened three more times, and then after that the computer wouldn't fully boot.
    • I get the usual windows loading screen, but then after it finishes loading, the screen goes black but the monitor is still on, the fans are still going, the computer is still on, but the lights on all my peripherals go out and I can't do anything.
    • After this, I restart and it goes into "Automatic Repair" mode.

    What I tried so far

    • Running the "repair" option from troubleshooting in automatic repair mode
    • System restore to one week ago.
    • Opening up the computer and seeing if anything is unplugged / wrong inside (the sound card USB connection had come loose, but that was all I could notice)
    • Unplug and plug back in the GPU
    • Unplug all drives except the boot drive
    • Plugging the monitor into the motherboard instead of the GPU (I can't even see the boot menu this way)

Anyway, I am totally stumped. I would love to get some advice on how to proceed from here to get my machine up and running again.

First Build just about ready, looking for tips and/or warnings

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:08 PM PDT

    Build Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Indeed I have.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Like most it will be for gaming(including competitive), maybe streaming(not a requirement) and also for basic video/audio editing if possible.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I would like high frame rate, i dont need 4k or anything just decently high settings for a game like Red Dead 2 on a good monitor. I do like competitive games so stability would be nice. Also I would like to do some emulation.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'm willing to go up to around 1300.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    U.S.A

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I am going to be staying in a house with extremely poor air conditioning so temperature control is more important than usual for me.

I've heard a good motherboard and PSU are important as a backbone and for being able to upgrade so I'm wondering if i should get a nicer motherboard. I'm still new to all this so sorry if I've forgotten something, any help would be appreciated. I'm extremely amped to get this built.

2000$ build, can this be min-maxed? + a few questions.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:06 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

    The build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vqpzWb

Long story short, I'm building a PC for my friend, and there are a few things I'm not sure about.
Main points to consider: His budget limit is 2000$ (+-100 is fine), he will use it both for gaming, and for work (programming, rendering, etc.), and he's insisting on either a 2080 super, or a 2080 ti. We want it to be as future proof as it can be (he's not into building, or upgrading systems, he usually buys a new one every 5 to 7 years, and sells the previous one.)

    1. We had a disagreement about the CPU. I think a Ryzen 3800X would serve him better, because it's better for work compared to the 9700KF, and it's a bit more budget friendly too, giving us some headroom for the other components. He's not too happy about it though, because he still believes the myth about amd not working together well with nvidia gpus, and he's afraid he'll lose too much fps in games.
    2. The monitor... He's in love with the VG259Q that's in the pcpartpicker link, and we argued a lot about it. I think a 1440p 144hz display would be a more appropriate choice, because the 2080S can handle it. He wants 1080p 144hz, his argument is that on AAA games even on 1080p the fps counter won't go higher than 160 average (he watched a few 2080S benchmarks running CoD Warzone). What are your thoughts on it? I suggested an LG 27gl850-b for him, but it's a bit more expensive than the VG259Q.
    3. The case. This will be my first mATX build, and I'm a bit worried about the airflow, and the temperature. Based on the descriptions, everything should fit, and I'm prepared to lose my sanity with cable management. Any experiences with the Fractal Design Focus G Mini, or with our secondary choice, the Kolink Sanctuary?

Is the build balanced enough? Does it need any changes? What are your opinions on it? I'm looking forward to every feedback, and part recommendation. Thank you very much!

PS. Sorry about any grammar mistakes, English is not my native language.

My computer keeps crashing when gaming...

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:01 PM PDT

So, I built my pc not long ago, it runs great except occasionally when I am gaming, my game and/or computer will randomly crash. this has been going for a while now, but recently it has become more frequent.

    Please help.

    Possibly useful information:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600

    CPU Cooler: Stock Ryzen cooler

Motherboard: ASRock b450 Steel Legend ATX

    Memory: Gigabyte Aorus 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3200MHz

    Storage: Crucial BX500 240GB SSD

    AND Seagate 500GB HDD

Video Card: Asus ROG Strix RX 570 OC

    Case: Thermaltake V200

PSU: Cooler Master MWE 550W Gold

    Other information:

I use an external sound card thing that I got for real cheap, that might have something to do about it LINK HERE: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/AUDORC0002/Orico-External-USB-Sound-Card-35mm-Mic-Speaker-Vol

The Thermaltake V200 does not have the best airflow, and the computer does get a bit heated, but don't think it gets hot enough to cause the crashing.

All parts are new and bought within a year.

I use a wireless internet adapter, idk this might have something to do with it crashing?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

    Case fans with metal blades?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:42 PM PDT

I'm watercooling my desktop and will need two 120mm fans for the radiator.

Do any case fans exist that are made of metal? The plan is use brass tubing and fittings for all the water cooling and I'm wanting matching fans if such a thing exists.

At best I've seen some titanium glossy fans, which I'd settle for and could maybe look into coating with brass once I figure out more about metal processing.

Is this a good build for some gaming and basic music production/recording?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:36 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BV6NWb

So I put together this relatively budget pc build so I can have something available for gaming and music production. Now I know its not the most powerful system ever, however I don't much money to work with. If the system specs are decent and can run some titles in HD at decent frames I'll be happy. Definitely not a graphics whore by any means. Additionally, if you really think I should get something else/upgrade please let me know. Ran everything through pcpartpicker so everything should be fine.

Some games I would like to play/enjoy: Call of Duty (mostly zombies), Witcher 3, upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, etc. So some first person shooters and open world story driven games.

    Thanks in advance :)

My doubt is: is my motherboard's sound card MSI B250M PRO-VD( https://it.msi.com/Motherboard/B250M-PRO-VD/Specification ) good enough? It seem to be ok for me. And another doubt, do i have to plug the headset cable directly on the motherboard because now i'm using case plug. It change?

Looking to upgrade mouse and keyboard

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:40 PM PDT

So as the title says I am hoping to get some advice on upgrading my mouse and keyboard. My current set-up is a Logitech G110 keyboard and Logitech G500 mouse.

For the keyboard I am pretty interested in moving towards a mechanical keyboard, though I haven't used one before. A couple of models that I've looked into are the Corsair K70/K95 or the Logitech G815. I like having the media controls but never really used the macro keys on my current keyboard.

As for the mouse I have looked into the Logitech G502 HERO, as it seems to be the newest version of my current mouse, and the Razer DeathAdder v2. My favorite feature about my mouse now is the ability to turn the free scroll on/off with a quick button press, which I know the Razer doesn't have.

Any tips or recommendations for models that I might not have considered would be much appreciated. I would also say that I would like to keep the keyboard cost ~$150 and the mouse between $60-80 at most. Thanks for your help!
