Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:01 PM PDT Hello, I recently acquired a thinkpad x220 tablet which has a fan error and after I (hopefully) repaired it, the computer won't turn on. I've dried a discharge, using different batteries, using different chargers, using another keyboard I have, and disconnecting the CMOS battery. Any help big or small would be much appreciated. Just wondering if replacing my CPU will fix this or is it something else? CPU- I7 8700k, the thermal paste was just reapplied, the CPU is about year-old now., [link] [comments]

Laptop died after usb scanner connection Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:01 AM PDT Acer R5 571tg. Laptop was on when I plugged my old scanner USB cord. Since the scanner doesn't have on/off switch, I plugged the power cord (standard DC jack sorta like on every other router or smth) after the USB. The moment I did that, both built-in screen and HDMI monitor went off, fans stopped, but the "power on" led was still glowing. I disconnected all the peripherals and power supply, turned it off by pressing reset button and tried to turn it on again. Just like a minute before, the power led turned on but everything else was dead. I sniffed the USB port and it smelled like something burned. I took the laptop apart and there's a small brown spot on the edge of the crystal, the one right next to cpu crystal. Also, there are several spots on the motherboard which look like drops of molten metal with tiny cracks around them. From what I understand, the south bridge is busted, but I'm more of a software guy and I don't have a multimeter to test power lines. Is it completely busted? Also, any thoughts on why did that happen? Scanner still works (I didn't connect it to another computer though) and USB cord was good since I took it from my printer. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:58 PM PDT This has happened multiple times and I can not figure out why this is happening. I have a ryzen 7 s700x with 16 GB ram running windows 10. Normally I have windows edge chromium open with 10 pinned tabs and 4 or 5 open tabs. Discord running in the background and sometimes playing a video game. I am able to do all of this without any problems except when I stop playing a game and go back to my normal screen. When I go back to my normal 2 screen setup I am able to interact with any open window but I am not able to close them to get back to the desktop. If I hit the windows key it does not work. I am able to do anything with the open windows except collapse them. I am able to hit ctrl alt delete and close windows. I just can't figure out what is happening or how to fix it. Real world case benchmark? Where to find Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:32 PM PDT Hi there I am wanting to learn more about benchmarking my pc so that I can try applying some overclocks and see the effects of temperature, different drivers and settings on it. I would like to see what the difference makes to my performance when I apply XMP to ram or increase core clock on GPU or so on so forth. However i am aware that there are alot of what people call synthetics or benchmark tests. Usually people like gamersnexus say something like "this is not indicative of real world cases" or something. So a CPU might get very good on something like passmark but then run slower in games or video editing or something. And maybe same with GPU. So what i am wondering is should i avoid things that are synthetic like say geekbench? Or is there benchmarks that have real world use cases built in so that i can get an idea of different performance in different use cases? It would be nice to test say, if i am doing 3d rendering to go and do some 3d rendering but at this stage i am not sure what i would like to do in the future or what my use cases may be. I would just like to see what doing certain tweaks improves without downloading every program. I also notice if i go looking for benchmark programs some of them are very old and people dont use anymore. Like userbenchmark or prime95 or furmark. Often people say use newer tests. But the tests seem to change alot for say hardware reviewers. How can I stay up to date with the current and best benchmark tests? Thank you [link] [comments] |
