A place for beginners, users, and experts. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:38 PM PDT Hi everyone. a few days ago soneone posted about a discord Server for discussing linux topics. I was a bit 'grumpy' about that, because... discord... There is a huge list of why I don't like to use discord, starting with the excessive tracking of users and what they do to the point where I don't trust them with their encryption. I also said, discord seems to be a "lazy" solution since it's not possible to self-host it, which also means that its not in my hands what happens with the data. Over the last few days I thought about what I could do. So I sat down and created something which I think is a nice alternative to 'discord'. first I thought about mumble, but after nearly a day of googling and digging though a lots of projects, I gave up on this. Mumble itself is a very nice tool but if it comes to a useable webinterface, it's a pain. I couldn't find a still active project which is actively developed. The newest I could find was from 2015 I think. Mumble itself is still actively developed but I also wanted something which can be used with a webinterface, and not just a client which has to be installed. I had a look at matrix and riot. I got synapse up and running, but I couldn't get it to work to integrate an option to use an email or mobile number to the profile. Then I tried rocketchat. And it nearly had all I wanted.
So... Now I want to announce to you: https://talk.jhml.de - I invite all of you to discuss (not only) Linux topics there. I was also able to integrate a working voice/videochat feature, all run by open source Software. Just to mention it: There is also a tracker included. I installed matomo - also an open source alternative to googles webtracker. I also host that by myself and the data is anonymized. I just would like to collect some data about the useage. Matomo (former piwik) is configured to follow "DO NOT TRACK" in the browser settings. I hope it will be used :) - Have fun ##edit: Feel free to give me feedback on this. Bugs/errors and so on. I will try to improve it. [link] [comments] |
Can you recommend a hands-on LibreOffice class/guide? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:47 PM PDT Hi, I'm going to be constantly dealing with spreadsheets and databases with my new, remote customer service job. PulseAudio Settings Are Changing Themselves? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 10:51 AM PDT LXDE / Ubuntu 16.04 (yes, I need to upgrade) I just got a Logitech C270 webcam with an integrated mike. I was on a video call today, and people were complaining that they could barely hear me. I load the pulseaudio gui (aka Volume Control / pavucontrol) and go to the Input Devices tab. I find the webcam microphone settings, and I see that it's set at 25% (more or less). I bump it up to 90% and they can hear me fine. After a few minutes, they say that my audio is fading again. I pull up the gui, and it's under 50%. I reset it and leave the gui up while I'm on the call. Periodically, I can see it drop a little. Sometimes by 5%, sometimes by 10%. Sometimes it changes immediately after I reset it, sometimes it waits a while before it changes itself. There's no clear pattern to when it drops or by how much. Any idea what could be going on here? Flatpak Not Displaying Correct Cursor Theme Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the default cursor for Flatpaks on openSUSE KDE Plasma? Footage (uploaded by someone else, but same bug) I did find this terminal command online that worked perfectly for Discord as it seems to be implied for: However, I was wondering if there is a way to change maybe the theme that it defaults too so, I don't have to try and run a command like this for every Flatpak. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
PC not booting anymore into dualboot screen but straight into Windows Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:38 PM PDT I'm using Linux Mint 19.3 dualbooted with Windows 10, 2 weeks ago I've updated the kernel and ever since, my computer does not boots anymore into the dualboot screen where I can choose Linux or Windows but it goes straight into Windows. I can still boot to Linux normally by pressing F12 at the startup and manually booting into it (no files were lost btw) but yeah, What can I do to fix it? And should I do a backup before fixing it or not necessary? [link] [comments] |

First time Linux user with some issues [ubuntu server 18 - Intel NUC8I3] Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:44 PM PDT Hi /r/linux4noobs! I want to implement a home automation system in my house and for this I need an ubuntu 18.04 server running Home Assistant in a docker on an Intel NUC8I3. To be honest it's been quite a struggle, but I've managed to solve most of my problems (Thanks Google). I still have a couple of issues though..
It hasn't been the easiest project so far, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless! I hope you guys can point me in the right direction on solving those 2 issues. Thanks in advance! Thibault [link] [comments] |
Help with Open-iSCSI and OS Hang Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:18 PM PDT I'm trying to use open iSCSI (2.0.874) to mount a remote iscsi LUN hosted on some NAS devices. When I try to login to the target, the linux machine completely freezes up (indefinitely) and I have to forcefully reboot. I've tried with both GParted Live 1.1.0 and Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. These are running as VM's on ESXi 6.5, nothing special about the setup (using local storage, etc.). I've done this exact thing before (in the same ESXi environment) with no issues. Not sure what's wrong this time around. Steps: -Install/update to the latest version of open-iscsi -Set node.startup to automatic in /etc/iscsi/iscsi.conf -Ran iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p NASIP -Got a valid list of targets (looks good) -Ran iscsiadm -m node --login -VM Immediately freezes, won't accept input, ctrl+c, break and ctrl+alt+del don't work, vmware shows 0% CPU or disk activity I thought maybe one of these were bad targets, so I've also tried limiting connection to particular targets but same behavior. I've also tried with a completely different NAS (different vendor/OS) - same behavior. These targets don't use authentication. Again, I've connected to them with openiscsi in the past without issues. Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

optane drive(?) doesn't appear as a block device Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:59 PM PDT I'd like to use my optane drive as my root dir in a Linux install; however, I don't see my optane as a drive or block device choice during install. Any ideas or help on how to fix this? HP 17-by0008ca laptop. BIOS is Insyde F.53, tried it with SGX on/off, legacy support on/off, secure boot on/off, RAID on/off. optane is PCIe 1.0, intel MEMPEK1J016GAH (model), non-RAID, NVMe. HDD is 1 TB SATA. the drive config is under UEFI Device Config/Intel RST/Non-RAID Disks. RAID driver = Intel RST 17.2.5.4046 if that matters. i cant change any settings here. I'm not sure what else to try! stupid crap; I wish I just got normal SSD instead. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:07 AM PDT Hey All, Been trying for a day, combing through seemingly similar issues from 2015 and similar, haven't found anything for 2019 or later. Hoping my ignorance here can be lessened in learning how to resolve this. Simple as that - keep deleting files, they're gone from the trash, but they're still taking up disc space. How do we rectify this? /sudo apt autoremove Ran them all multiple times, and only Kb are removed...not the 30+ GB of unknown content. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Networking and testing with Linux. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:19 PM PDT Basically I have lubuntu, Should I at some point use a different distro if I want to get into pen testing? is kali really the way to go? Basically what is everything that I need to master? which programs? I know it's not all about using programs but is that a big part of it? Any big websites that have multiple tutorials on cyber security and pen testing? free of course I'm not really one to pay for courses. Thanks. I just feel like I'm slightly stuck it makes sense for people to not really know which specific direction to go in and what information to cover as apposed to wasting time not knowing what to advance with next. Lastly, is the command line used for hacking? I'm assuming so or maybe not as much as I think which is what I'm trying to figure out. [link] [comments] |

Debian - have a bunch of routes and tried to add them to a script Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:56 AM PDT Hello, I have several dozens of routes provided by my network admin I need to add to my debian 10.3 server. My first try was to add them to /etc/network/interfaces using "/ip/route add ...". This works when I only add one route. But I need to add all of them. So I moved the /ip/route commands to a file named "/usr/local/sbin/routes" and in the interfaces I added "up /usr/local/sbin/routes" to the network settings. I also made the file executable. When I restart the server it doesn't proceed the script. But when I su in the console and start the script by my own it works all fine. So I corius what I did wrong. Can you give me some advices how to get the routes in the system? Regards [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu doesn't display Japanese characters Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:02 AM PDT I tried installing fonts by following this guide but it doesn't work, any suggestion what should i install?: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 10:40 AM PDT I'm going to start learning to use Arch Linux. I already know most of the concepts that get from the live boot to an install so I should be good installing it. But after that I'm assuming I'll have to manually install the GUI and i3 which is my current window manager in Debian and Kali. After that I'd obviously have to install all my favorite programs so I'm betting it'd take around 2 hours to go from nothing to being fully up and running and at home for a first time install. My question is, once I've got everything in place is there a way that I can make a boot USB from my setup so I can just reinstall it in it's "ready to go" state? Sort of like Windows "roll back" thing that I never use. That way if I mess something up to where only a format will help I can just copy this OS over and not have to spend a few hours reinstalling everything. I'm thinking maybe some sort of disk imaging program? But I basically have zero experience with those and knowing Linux there's probably some way to just do this easily. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
