Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:50 AM PDT At this point, no fancy hardware feature, no Android system update, no stock-like ROM or anything you can imagine will ever bring your experience on Android to the next level. We've nearly reached the limit and everyone knows it. Improvements are extremely incremental and largely don't change how you interact with your device on a day-to-day basis. Your time on the lock screen, the home screen, looking at the notification shade, tweaking a few niche settings to your likings; those are small moments in time. What you look at and use large and by far are the apps themselves. With all that in mind, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that mainstream tech reviewers continue to harp on the same strings:
All this while arguably the most important piece of the puzzle is ignored. When mainstream reviewers are doing (for example) their showdown comparisons of the latest iPhone vs the Samsung, iPhone vs the Pixel, etc, they should be mentioning that a good portion of the Android apps are absolute dogshit. Call them out specifically such as Snapchat, Instagram & Facebook. They should of course acknowledge that it's not the phone manufacturers fault, but really start giving the heat to these huge mega corporations for their continually awful treatment of Android users. I pay the same monthly bill as an iOS user on Spotify for half the experience. On top of inserting it into occasional reviews, (which is fair as they should be reviewing the overall experience, not just listing specs and first impressions) they should also be writing articles about it. Make some noise about it. I'm aware that a few have been written in the past, but they've all gotten very quiet about it in the past years and it's helping nobody. If mainstream reviewers continue to shout "If only my phone had 2 more GB of RAM! If only my screen was 0.2" larger!" then that's all we're going to get. Ever. On the other hand, if the awful app experience starts to generate bad press to everyone involved, who knows, companies like Google & Samsung might even take initiative to cooperate with app developers to create a better experience. Snapchat might eventually snap & officially support select flagships for stock-app-like camera quality. Same with Instagram & Facebook. Beyond camera quality, Samsung & Google might start giving out some ... ahem "incentives" for major app devs to clean up their act. Windows Phones were absolutely crucified for their app support. I don't know why Android seems to be getting a free pass. I'm a huge Android fanboy, and I think the only way things are going to improve is if the people with a real voice in the tech community start putting it through the ringer. Burn it and let it be reborn, like the great Phoenix. Amen. Peace to the world, save the turtles, goodbye [link] [comments]

How the Apple/Google coronavirus contact tracing system works - ELI5 version Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:44 PM PDT I have read the specifications for this system and below is my simplified explanation of how it works. See my previous comment for a more technical explanation.
There are several features that make it hard to use this system for anything other than contact tracing:
I hope this will reduce the number of silly "LOL DAE 1984???" and "BATMAN PHONE SPYING" comments that I've seen a lot here lately. I don't see any obvious way for this system to be used for nefarious purposes or exploited by hackers, short of discovering massive weaknesses in the standard cryptographic hash functions it relies on to implement the "Library of Babel" - and that's extremely unlikely. Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:38 PM PDT https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/04/22/red-magic-5g-review-all-the-specs-but-none-of-the-magic/ I get that they need money, but how can they swallow their pride like this? This is the first Android Police article I read, and I'm so surprised that they "changed their mind" so quickly on this one. [link] [comments]
OnePlus 8 Pro Display Green Tint Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:39 AM PDT The display is awesome. However, I had seen reports of a green tint on the display when in low light conditions and the screen at low brightness. I heard that the Galaxy S20 Ultra also had this issue and Samsung came out saying they recognised the problem and were bringing a software update out to solve the issue. Oneplus, only yesterday I believe, also came out and recognised there was an issue and said the next software update will fix it (which is what I assume was a silent fix on this update as it wasn't in the patch notes, neither was it on the S20 Ultra update. Anyway, I managed to take a picture of the green tint issue before and after the most recent 10.5.5 update which I got last night. I have attached it over on twitter as I can only seem to attach links here, not an image. Got the glacial green one with an ultramarine blue coming on Wednesday. If you want to know anything else, let me know! [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:23 PM PDT Why does every (usually mid-range) phone need an inscreen fingerprint sensor, teardrop notch, 3+ camera setup, no headphone jack and more then 90hz display if a) they cost more b) they do less and c) they make the phone harder to use? I mean there is no reason to put the fingerprint sensor on the front other then to be like every other phone, along with the teardrop notch. Some phones are either looking ugly or generic, and cutting costs where it internally matters just to have the 4 camera setup? There are so many cool things from 2016 that phones recently have ditched simply for the sake of "innovation", which is bs because by doing this, we're limiting our phones. I (personally) love a back fingerprint sensor, headphone jack and a small or popup camera and I'm sure a lot of other people do. I'm sure the cameras are better and the display is better but if it's affecting usability, price and quality, I say just ditch it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:59 AM PDT So I was browsing Snapchat like usual and after I sent a snap to a few people, BAM, I'm instantly in a much cleaner 5 tab bottom bar UI. The five tabs were Maps, Chat, Camera, Stories and Explore. All icons. And I thought this will be stick and won't go away. So I closed the app to do some research on the new UI and I found that it was under testing. And I go back to experience more of the new UI and it disappeared like nothing happened. 😐 I really liked the new UI. Many might not. But I really liked the new change after a good while. If anyone has any way to get it back or has anything to say about it, I'd be glad to know. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:58 AM PDT I would have to say that Apple's removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 series, while unpopular, did lead to an improvement in Bluetooth quality (if I'm not mistaken I heard this in an MKBHD video). [link] [comments]
Why Are Global Versions Of Chinese Phones Almost Always Delayed? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 10:33 AM PDT Recently I've started looking for a replacement for my S8+, and while I'm in no rush, eventually I will have to pick a new device. First, I've noticed that not only the usual bunch (Apple, Samsung, Huawei), but the bargain brands as well (Xiaomi, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo etc.) have blown the flagship prices absolutely sky high. While flagships have never been budget-friendly, this year they are making gaming PCs look affordable. With that in mind, I've turned to newer brands, such as Realme, as well as more affordable Xiaomi phone lines. The problem is, I'm not seeing a Global/European option for a lot of those phones, despite them having been released for some time. They are either China and India exclusive, or if a global edition does exist, it can only be ordered from a Chinese warehouse. While I'm aware about the pandemic causing chaos in mobile (and every other) industry, this trend hasn't exactly started out in this year. For some time the Chinese brands focus solely on their own, plus the Indian market, and then maybe, after at least several months, they make their phones easily affordable directly from European stores. What exactly is stopping them from selling both versions at once? They also suddenly increase the price by at least a third once the device does come to Europe, with some recent examples being so extreme that they completely threw off my plans and intentions about buying certain devices. This year Samsung specs without a Samsung price don't seem to be an option. But that's another story. [link] [comments]
Latest Chrome Dev removes Duet flags Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:36 PM PDT I guess the Duet experience is over, as the flags are gone in version 84.0.4120.6 The flag to add a checkbox in Settings > Themes to force dark rendering is gone too [link] [comments] |
