Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:51 AM PST There are many silly names and conventions in CS, but nothing grinds my gears like the stupid fucking RAID naming scheme. First of all, the names are utterly undescriptive. Like, what exactly is RAID 4 for example? Well the only piece of information you can pull out of that name is that it you're working with 2+ disks because, you know, RAID. That's it. Beyond that, you can't even begin to guess what it might be unless you already have an idea. It's just a stupid number that tells you nothing useful whatsoever. It doesn't even imply anything. Second, who the hell thought using the word "level" to refer to different RAID configs was a good idea? That word followed by numbers comes with the inevitable implication that the RAIDs follow a natural progression of sorts, which is absolutely not true at all. Is RAID 1 a logical step up from RAID 0? No it's not. They're completely different stuff with completely different performance goals. There is no reasonable line of progression where you go "one level above" RAID 0 and land at RAID 1. The relation does kinda exist for certain levels, like 4 and 5 for example, I'll give it that. And then there's the RAID xy configurations that not only require you to have prior knowledge as to what RAID x and RAID y are, but also they don't give much useful information about how it really works. Take RAID 10 and RAID 01. Which one is mirrored then striped, and which one is striped then mirrored? I know the answer. Though not because the name tells it to me, but because I had to look it up many times in the past and now I have it memorized. If you want to make your names look kewl and 1337, just call it RAID-S for "striped" instead of RAID 0 for example. RAID-DP for "distributed parity" instead of the shitty RAID 5 that means fuck all. Not perfect of course, but at least then the name actually has some descriptive power. WHY NUMBERS, MAN? TL;DR: Using an ascending numerical order to name shit when there's no natural logical order was a stupid fucking idea and whoever came up with it should be very ashamed of themselves. Can't come up with decent names so uses shitty numbers instead smh. I'm angry. edit: for more anger check out how ibanez name their guitars. After 11 years of owning my Ibanez I still have to take a moment to remember how it's called. Shit can get wild. [link] [comments]
Do I need to do anything when upgrading my CPU? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:31 AM PST I am changing my Ryzen 5 2600 for a 3600, is it as simple as removing it and putting in the 3600? Do I need to do anything specific, other than remove and replace? I have a current overclock on the 2600, do I need to remove that or reset settings? Same mobo, CPU is the only thing being changed. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:18 AM PST because of everything that is happening and the release of new hardware should I wait to build my first pc? [link] [comments]
I finally got my motherboard to post! Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:22 PM PST It took me 3 hours to find the problem: a bad RAM stick. It's my first time building a PC myself, so I'm proud of myself! I tried taking the motherboard back out of the case, I tried running it with only 1 RAM stick, and then I swapped the RAM stick, and it worked. Then, I tried running in dual-channel mode, and it didn't work, so I'm assuming that one RAM stick is bad. On the down side: I only have 4GB of RAM to work with now. Motherboard for an Ryzen 5 3600x...any suggestions Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:23 PM PST I'm looking for a good motherboard for a Ryzen5 3600x that I would like to overclock to around 4Ghz on all cores. I was thinking about the Gigabyte x570 Gaming X. Thanks for any suggestions and tipps in andvanced. [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:13 PM PST Hey, I just have a question. I have an xFx Rx 580 8gb and on User Benchmark it claims its performing in the 10th percentile? Cpu is also in the 6th. Anything I'm doing wrong? [link] [comments]
What NON-COMPONENT parts should I buy to build a PC (such as tools, anti-static mat, etc)? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:07 PM PST Title. I'm a first-time builder. I've got all my parts ordered and on the way. I've got a couple of screwdriver kits and an anti-static wristband already. Anything else I should order before I build 2 AMD PCs to make my assembly process easier? Anything you guys consider a "must-have" for building? EDIT: Should probably mention that one of the PCs is being built entirely from new parts, and the other is being built mostly using parts a friend very generously gave me (those parts were all used together in a previous system; all I need to provide is the case, PSU, and storage). In other words, one of the systems is all-new parts, the other is mostly used parts. [link] [comments]
Help buying the right amount of RAM Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:37 PM PST Firstly, my issue. I'm struggling to run multiple software at the same time, Discord/Rainbow six siege/Twitch/Streaming. I've asked around and believe this is down to having 8GB of RAM. I have decided to invest in some more RAM to boost my PC performance and hopefully find a remedy to my issues. Specs: Motherboard: MS-7A66 RAM - DDR4 - 2400(1200MHz) Kingston Graphics Card - GTX 1060 GB CPU - i5 7400 I've run CPU - Z and seen I have 4 available slots on my motherboard. I've researched online and found people having issues with their CPU cooler restricting their space. I haven't opened my PC before hand and it was a pre built PC. My questionsWill I have enough clearance to install 2 8GB sticks of RAM in addition to my first stick? Will RAM solve the issue? Am I just going about this all the wrong way? Edit: Thank all of you for your help, you really are great! Have a good week! [link] [comments]
Please help me improve my build. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:40 PM PST Hello, I'm trying to figure out what components I'm going to buy in 3 months, I'm the type of planning ahead guy. Could you please let me know if there is anything I can improve in my build? https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/TZNWmg [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:49 PM PST I'm saying "VR Ready" meaning it can play most VR games using the Oculus Rift S with as few drops below 90Hz as possible. I've essentially narrowed it down to the 1660 Super, the 1070, or the RX 580. All three seem compelling in their own ways, but I'm not sure which is best for the price. It is also worth noting that I have a Corsair CX450M. [link] [comments]
Trying to upgrade a computer for parent's use Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:37 PM PST I recently acquired a free PC from an office that was going out of business (you know, because I like experimenting with computer stuff ;) ) and when I received it, I realized it may be a good replacement for my mother's current desktop, which is still running 32 bit Windows Vista. It is an eMachines EL1352 running Windows 10 Home 64-bit with a single core AMD Sempron 150 running at 2.90 GHz and 2 GB DDR3 RAM (2 sticks of 1 GB each) with a frequency of 535.7 MHz. As of right now, I can get it to work okay, but it's quite SLOW. All she'll likely do is check email, use Word, shop online, and watch videos, but it's pretty slow at that. Is there anything I could do to make it at least fast enough to not make her lose her patience. I was thinking about maybe getting one or two 2 GB sticks since 2 GB is pretty much the absolute minimum Windows 10 64 bit will run on. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:56 PM PST Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? Yes. Intended use for this build Gaming, exclusively. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? 1440p, 144hz at high(est) settings for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Budget? ~2000 USD In what country are you purchasing your parts? Denmark Parts:
This is my first build and I've done a lot of research for the past months trying to figure out which parts to pick in order to get the most bang for the buck while getting good quality parts and a silent system. I expect to use this system exclusively for gaming. I'm currently playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on a PS4 Pro but it is so loud and I'm not utilizing my 144hz 1440p monitor (a Dell S2719DGF). I am aware that my monitor supports FreeSync and not G-Sync but at the time of purchase I thought I was gonna go with a Radeon 5700 XT instead of a 2070 Super. However, I do want to stream some gameplay to Twitch and that made me pick an Nvidia card because of their NVENC feature. I would like to be able to utilize this build for VR as well for games like DCS World and Euro Truck Simulator. I've already ordered the NCASE M1 and currently waiting for it to ship.
Thank you for taking the time to help me build an awesome SFF gaming PC :-) [link] [comments]
Just picked up this build, anything you’d change before I put it together? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:07 PM PST Picked it up at Microcenter with the help of a staff member. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:48 AM PST I'm wanting to potentially upgrade my monitors. I've had dell u2414h dual monitors for the last 5-6 years, and I just upgraded my build and would like to try to go to a larger screen and have a single monitor. Is there a good way to do this without breaking the bank? 4K isn't a necessary feature, but I'd like 1440 maybe? I doubt my gpu could run games at 4K with any significant settings honestly. Build is a r5 2600x with an rx580 sapphire nitro + 8gb. [link] [comments]
Anyone ever bought from duy electronics? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:42 PM PST Bought a graphics card about 5 days ago and havent gotten even a tracking number from them [link] [comments]
Second build, hopefully ready to buy Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:41 PM PST Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yup. What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Future-proof gaming PC on a reasonable budget. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) 1440p, 60hz monitor. Games should look "nice" for as many years as possible. Would've liked to try out ray tracing, but it doesn't look like I can get that and good performance within the budget. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Within striking distance of $1000 USD. In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA. Purchasing from Brazil is also an option, but not planned. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).
Provide any additional details you wish below. Currently very indecisive on the GPU, so I would be curious to hear recommendations for or against anything around this price point or below. I also hear a lot of mixed opinions about the MSI Evoke specifically--is it really that loud? Does anyone have a recording of what it sounds like? And this would be my first time with an AMD GPU, so would love to know about any pitfalls with drivers or compatibility. Lastly, as I understand it, the Tomahawk MAX is pre-updated for compatibility with AMD 3000-series processors. Is that right? Thanks in advance, everyone! You guys were very helpful in my first build and it's still serving me quite well. :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:03 AM PST Hey guys, My computer is starting to have some thermal issues so I have decided the clean out the fan and heatsink alongside replacing the thermal paste. My only problem is that I don't have any isopropyl alcohol to remove the old, presumably dry thermal paste with. Is there anything else I can use to remove this? Thanks! My computer keeps freezing randomly! Help! Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:24 PM PST Since I built my computer last August, every once in a while, my computer just freezes. When it does that, I either have to manually restart my computer from my case or it'll let me move my mouse a little bit but will be so stuttery I still have to restart. Could this be my ram or motherboard? Could it be my BIOS, because I'm still running I think launch day BIOS from AMD for X570. (Running a R5 3600 with a X570 Steel Legend AX btw) Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments]
Will Ryzen 5 2600 bottleneck an RTX 2070 Super? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:18 PM PST Hello all: Question regarding the ability to upgrade my GPU while respecting my loveable little CPU's limitations. I'd like to get something on the higher end to get the best performance and value-retention, but would also like to avoid buying a card that I can't fully enjoy. To wit, will my 2600 be able to keep up with a 2070 Super? And if not, what is the highest level GPU I should be looking at? Many thanks for your time! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:17 PM PST Here in Canada the 3600 is $236, and the 2700X is only $214. Which is better value for gaming? I will be using a B450 Pro4 motherboard with 3000 speed RAM. I will also be keeping the stock cooler. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments]
Is more/less of the same RAM on a QVL okay to work? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:12 PM PST I'm looking at the memory QVL for this motherboard and it has the Corsair dominator ram that I am looking for on the list but in a 2x8 configuration. The same RAM (timings, speed) is also sold in 4x8 configurations. Would it also work? [link] [comments] |
