Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:28 PM PDT Hi, just started to use linux a few days ago. It is now my only os because otherwise If I would have dual booted, I would've taken the easy way out and used windows a lot. And I really want to learn it. 1.In windows whenever I installed something I got to choose where it went. But in linux whenever I install something, lets say a package, where does it go? 2.Do I need to declutter my directories at some point? 3.As a beginner, should I start out with bash or zsh? How do they differ from each other? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Linux and Windows on the same SSD Posted: 31 Mar 2020 03:50 AM PDT Hello. I finally decided that I should switch to Linux as the main OS. But at the same time, there are things I just can't do without Windows. From Windows-only software to cross-platform software development. Considered using VM. But I'm not happy that there's a delay of about 100-200 ms. There is an option to use Windows as a second system. And here's the question: Would it hurt to use the two systems together if they were installed on the same SSD? My friend told me that there could be problems if there were sections of different file systems on one SSD. Is that true? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can't boot elementary OS from my ASUS TUF Gaming laptop Posted: 31 Mar 2020 04:28 AM PDT I installed elementary os but when I got to the actual distro itself and pressed enter to boot it the glowing logo only showed up and nothing changed. I then pressed esc after turning off the laptop and starting elementary again and the screen showed some grey text before getting stuck on this line of text: 'A start job is running for monitoring of LVM2 mirrors, snapshots etc. using dmeventd of progress pulling (32s / no limit)'. Can anyone help me with this? Any help would be appreciated. (P. S. I installed elementary on rufus and balenaetcher, but from both installers the problem is the same) [link] [comments] |
Advantage of Window Managers and can a beginner use it exclusively? Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:28 AM PDT I see a lot of rice on r/unixporn, and at least 75% of the "rices" involve people using WMs only. Which leads me to a few questions:

Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:51 PM PDT This week during quarentine I have been testing out different linux distros after watching one of Linus's old videos on gamig on linux. I followed this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CozK7sJ8UMs&t=994s to a tee. The only difference being that my boot partition was set to ext4 instead of FAT32. I tried re-installing it several times but it didnt work. I have a 120GB SSD that windows is installed on, and a 250GB HDD that I planned to install Pop OS on. I had to do a custom install because I use about 50GB of storage on my hard drive for games and such. Does anyone know how to help? [link] [comments] |
Why does some Distros not work with my computer’s wifi adapter? Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:42 AM PDT So I don't know about the model of my laptop (very helpful, I know). I use a HP gaming laptop from around 2016. I've noticed that some distros just don't have wifi, or something. I don't know how to describe it but basically when I browse through settings I can't even find an option to use wifi. I've noticed this with TAILS and Linux Mint. The only one that works with the wifi is Parrot OS. If you understand what is happening and why, please tell me. [link] [comments] |
VLC control bar doesn't go to the bottom of the screen in Kubuntu Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:32 PM PDT I am running dual monitors and with my main monitor the control bar does not go below the panel at the bottom but on my second monitor it does. I know it's the panel that's stopping it because if I change the height the location of the bar moves according to that height. I could just remove or move the panel but I like so I'm trying to keep it. https://i.imgur.com/dk1ZicZ.jpg [link] [comments] |

Distro performance for 3d modeling. Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:46 AM PDT I'm working as a 3d artist and recently I moved to Linux from Windows. Right now I use Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon and I wanted to do some testing between Linux and windows. So I've decided to do the testing with blender because it's working on both operating systems, so I've started the testing and for my surprise the windows 10 machine was faster although by a very minimal amount. I've done the testing on a dual boot and with the same hardware(CPU: Intel i7 7700k GPU: Nvidia gtx 1070 RAM: 16 GB). I rendered with the GPU. Now on another related subject: I need a distro with good stability, good performance and not a lot of ram usege to use for 3d modeling and rendering. And I wandered if a GUI lass distro will have better performance and if yes I also want a stable GUI lass distro for only the rendering. One last question: The distro affects the performance or just the desktop environment?. So for summary Or TLDR: What could cause the Linux machine to be slower than the windows machine? Distro affects performance or only the desktop environment affects the performance? Can a distro without a GUI can be faster than a one with GUI? There are differences between Linux Mint editions (Cinnamon, mate and xfce) beside the desktop environment? (Does the only difference is the desktop environment?) If I installed Linux Mint cinnamon there is a way to switch to other desktop environment E.g. mate or xfce without reinstalling Linux Mint and still getting the full performance boost from the lighter weight desktop environment? Can I have more than one desktop environment without losing performance? And a recommendation for a stable distro with good performance(that I would use for 3d modeling) + recommendation for a distro without GUI that is stable a have good performance(that I would use for rendering). Thank you very much for the help. :) [link] [comments] |
Backing up multiple directories from remote to local Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:51 AM PDT 3/4 directories I need to copy to a disk on my local machine are <500Mb but the other is 1.5TB. What's the sane way to approach this ? Scp seems like it will take forever. Is rsync the way to go? Moreover, should I tar them on the host before trying to transfer them to my local machine ? Probarbly not Gamehub. Installing DLC problem KC:D Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:14 PM PDT Hopefully this is the right place to ask. Installed the windows game "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" using gamehub and it runs fine, give or take. Then I decided to install the DLC and the GoG DLC installer fails to detect the base game. The installers are all the same version 1.9.5.404-503_(35438) downloaded from GoG today. The error is "! The base game was not detected. Please install the GoG version." Which it is. The main Installers are under games/gog/_collections/<game> The dlc Installers are under games/gog/_collections/<game>/dlc Main Game folder is games/gog/kingdom_come_deliverance The Main games executable (kingdomcome.exe) lives in games/gog/kingdom_come_deliverance/bin/win64 Used the Wine windows program loader to launch <dlc> from Dolphin and got the error. Moved the dlc installer to the game folder and the Win64 folder. What do I need to do to install the dlc? Is there a better way? Manjaro KDE. *Edit: Clarification. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:22 AM PDT Hello there, I want to use the window manager called tinywm for a specific purpose. Its simple all I want is when I execute a specific bash file when I was on tty, I want to start X then tinywm then firefox on it. There is almost no documentary on it, the only one there is from debian wiki which I written the bash file from. Which only starts a black screen, it has a pointer from the common desktop environment I have on the system and nothing else which probably means I did successfully opened X but not the tinywm. does the same too. There is also the part of how am i supposed to close it but that can wait for later. [link] [comments] |

Help with getting Borderlands 3 to launch Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:26 AM PDT Hey, I've been trying to get Borderlands 3 to work for a while now, I've gone through tutorials but still nothing. I'm such a noob when It comes to Linux that I just have no idea what to do. The tutorials I went though involved downloading two folders, running two commands, one in each folder, then moving a .dll file. I'm using Steam Proton, so I had to change the commands. After doing this, there is no change, I press play, it looks like it's going to launch, but then just resets to normal. I have no idea what to do, so any help would be great, thanks. Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:12 AM PDT Obligatory I use arch btw. For some God forsaken reason I cannot login on a new user account I made using ssh. This is me successfully logging into the account, by first using my main account to get on the server: This is me trying to log in directly: More verbose output: I've already restarted sshd via the systemctl command. Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 10:11 PM PDT Snap applications cannot connect online when connected to a VPN. I've tried Spotify, Bitwarden etc apps and they cannot login whenever I'm connected to a VPN. Disconnect from VPN and bam you can login now. Funny thing is if I use the appimage version of Bitwarden or the .deb version of Spotify, they all connect to internet when connected to a VPN. Tried this with other online snap apps. Same problem. How do I configure snap with VPN connection? TIA [link] [comments] |
