I feel like I spend the majority of my time trying to learn how to use Linux/Github than actually using it. Is that common?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:56 PM PST

I'm relatively new to Linux. I've had it for about 2 weeks now. Before switching, I began learning command line with Cygwin and Bash and have been enjoying that. In the beginning things were a mess since I didn't really understand the file structure on Linux or how to download packages (that's something I'm trying to learn) so I just downloaded things using commandline. Saw it show up in a folder and thought that was sufficient. I've tried transitioning CLI into linux. For the most part, things are fine. I installed Solus OS as my first Distro even though I realize it has limitations. For me, it really is the small things that give me trouble. I am learning that distros have package managers and getting used to those. However, when a package isn't available I'm left with Github, and I really don't understand how to install things using that. I know I can use wget, curl, etc. I know how to unpack tarball and unzip zip. I know now that it installs into whatever directory I'm in unless I specify. Outside of that, I'm lost due to the following:

    1. I go to the latest release of a github page and there are 4 files for example. Tarball, zip, master, source etc. I don't know which to get. Just one? All of them?
    2. I don't know where to install them in the file directory
    3. I don't know how to install them. When to use make install, often times it's not available
    4. I don't know which files I can delete and clean up afterwards
    5. I don't know when to use wget and when to use curl

Yesterday I tried following this to set up vim for Python IDE: https://realpython.com/vim-and-python-a-match-made-in-heaven/

Everything was fine except for the YouCompleteMe plugin. I couldn't figure out how to make it work because of the c compiler problem and then the Solus package manager kept telling me in the terminal that cmake3 wasn't available and neither was g++. I decided to leave it and figure it out later. This is what I mean, though. I have to stop and research what cmake and g++ is and that derails trying to get this one thing I need since those are dependencies. I know I'm impatient and want to jump in and have fun and that's my fault. It's just that it gets exhausting.

Things like /.bashrc /.profile /.vimrc are confusing but I'm getting more comfortable. I've tried adding certain themes only to have CLI tell me there are errors and they don't exist. Neomutt has been the worst with this.

Another even more simple thing. Yesterday I wanted to set up Plex and move some movies on my external hard drive to the server so my family can watch them across the country. Well, root owns almost all directories and files on the hard drive. So, I tried googling and typing stuff in but none of it worked. So I decided to come back to it. However, using google and typing things in with a vague understanding causes issues. Using cygwin on windows in the last two months I have already accidentally deleted all files matching a pattern by using a wildcard. This morning I accidentally set my C: drive permissions to octal code 130 (basically only NT-Admin/System can access it now. I can't even open or read it). So, I had to email IT about that to unlock it and am still waiting for a response. I've definitely been learning to be careful with CLI and have started adding certain safeguards like rm -i into config files. I imagine you mess up a lot to learn.

Am I doing something wrong or is this just the common learning curve? Where can I find information like this that guides you through things like drive permissions, installations, etc? Some things I come across on google are hard to follow as a beginner and some have lead to issues with command line as I've mentioned.

Why should should I use linux and how should I use it?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:04 AM PST

I've never used linux before. Now after seeing some videos on youtube now I feel intrigued. But only thing is I use my pc for playing games often. Other times I use it for study purposes. Nothing more. I heard gaming on linux is difficult. Say, i install it, how exactly it'd be better than windows? How would I get the most out of it? I am obviously a noob, so forgive me if I offend you.

Installed Manjaro KDE last night. Need help with some issues.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:15 AM PST

    Hey!

Just jumped into something other than Ubuntu after a long, long time. Planning to stay with Manjaro for a while. I was able to solve some issues but some just little hard to resolve. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Manjaro 19.0.1 comes with Python 3.8.1. I use VS code, Python and Tensorflow for my work. Unfortunately Tensorflow 2.0 doesn't support Python 3.8 but only 3.7. How do I go about downgrading the Python version? If I do virtualenv, how do I execute commands after? A sample code will be great.
    2. I have Nvidia gt-525m graphic card. How to install its drivers?
    3. Similarly Realtek audio. How to find the right driver? I have Dell XPS L502X. Came with Waves Maxxaudio.
    4. Often times, the system hangs for a minute. I could move my mouse, click into different applications but actions(say refreshing a webpage) only happens after system returns. Anyway to debug the issue?
    5. The boot takes longer than Windows 10 about 10 seconds or so. I use a SSD. Is there a way to speed up the boot?

    .x86_64

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:42 AM PST

Some programs (especially games) have a ".x86_64" at the end of the file name. Some time ago when I was trying out Godot as an Engine my projects were also compiled to a .x86_64 file. Usually everyone says, that there is no such thing as ".exe" in Linux and I know, that programs don't need any extension to be executable.
But what exactly is ".x86_64"? What does it do? What do you need it for? Why isn't it just "programName" instead of "programName.x86_64"
I couldn't even find and answer online.

Ubuntu unusable - description in the comments

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:38 AM PST

No EFI partition was found after removing windows and trying to install Kubuntu.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 08:20 AM PST

So I removed windows some time ago and had ubuntu for a while. After that I switched to manjaro kde but now I want to switch to Kubuntu because im more familiar with ubuntu distros. When installing Kubuntu I created the following partitions:

    swap ext4 at / ext4 at /home

but when i clicl Install now it give me this warning.

"No EFI System Partition was found. This system will likely not be able to boot successfully, and the installation process may fail. Please go back and add an EFI System Partition, or continue at your own risk"

Im not an expert but I think this has to do with the fact that I had windows installed. How can I fix this?

Note... I don't want to dual boot windows or ever using windows again. I want to clean install Kubuntu. How should I fix this issue?

Screen Tearing in youtube and a lot of games

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:07 PM PST

    Specs: ryzen 5 2600, 1070, POP!_OS

The screen tears when a video gets "intense", for example if the video changes a lot, it tears. Also in some games (like tf2) it tears like crazy. I am on 75hz if that helps.

How is linux cutdown to work for single application products?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:23 PM PST

I heard the other day that there are toasters that run linux. With more products becoming "smart" and connected to the web, they are using linux. But I'm not assuming it's a full OS like ubuntu. If so how does a company build a version of linux that only does one application? Are they starting with a full os and stripping away packages until it's small enough?

Fixing Windows 10 after failed dual boot

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:36 AM PST

So I wanted to dual boot Win10 and Pop!_OS but Pop didn't have a dualboot option. I tried to do it manually (mistake #1) and now Windows doesn't boot and I get a grub rescue menu. I used a guide in the Mangarno Linux subreddit for a very similar problem and it worked for a few days but now its stopped again and the fix no longer works. If anyone could help me solve this I would be incredibly greatful. I have an idea of doing a fresh install of Windows on a spare 60GB HDD and seeing if that would work (all I care about is accessing my Windows files, I don't care where Windows is installed.)

"Path does not exist" while trying to import media to Sonarr & Radarr (Docker container) Linux Mint

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:21 PM PST

While I'm trying to import my media from my internal HDD's I get the same "Path does not exist" message in both Sonarr and Radarr. I've installed both using this guide then simply typed in the IP adress to access the GUI, I have not changed any settings in docker or the containers. I've made sure I have full control over the entire "Media" folder and everything in it using the "chmod 777" command so it must be something with docker that is not configured right.

    Find out schema/table with Sqlmap

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:45 PM PST

I am trying to figuring out the schema/table of a particular website, but not sure if it is possible, think of the following scenario:

    https://preview.redd.it/io98fpl0nbk41.jpg?width=274&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3bef6ef9b179ae69e69664669456c7d0b1fa535

Let's say the log in page is in "example.com/login". The parameters are user and password. Supposedly there suppose to be a database.

How can I run an sqlmap on this url to know the schema/tables if there is no '.php' neither '?'. Every tutorial I checked had brought examples with '.php' urls, which in my case there isn't.

What else could be done? (In preference with sqlmap)

    Thanks in advance!

Ps. It is a specific website which I can legally do that.

Getting a new SSD for Linux today, question about the install

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:02 PM PST

So I just removed my Manjaro partition on my main SSD that I was dual-booting for a while now in order to put it on its own separate drive. I have an M.2 SSD that I was sharing Windows and Linux on and I wanted to know what the easiest way of re-installing Linux once I get my new drive in. I read some threads that say its safest to unplug the Windows SSD, plug in the new SSD, boot from Linux Live USB, install Linux onto new SSD, power-off and then re-plug the original SSD in order to guarantee that Linux doesn't install any bootloader stuff onto the main SSD. Since I'm using an M.2 would it be as simple as just unscrewing it, doing all the Linux installation and then just screwing it back in?

OR..should I not even bother with unhooking the Windows SSD and just install to the new SSD as I had done before when it was a partition? I've used Linux as a novice for years now but this will be the first time that I actually have it on its own drive.

Thanks for reading, any help appreciated.

Using NTFS partition along with Linux?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:51 PM PST

[Knew nothing about Linux until a couple of days ago]

What problems might I run into if use a NTFS partition in a Linux system? I recently revived my old Windows 7 PC by completely getting rid of Windows and installing LXLE Linux. I didn't want to lose my data so I manually partitioned it (spent a whole day learning about disk partitioning as i knew nothing about it).

Currently I have 4 partitions (MBR scheme)- root (primary, ext4), swap (logical), an NTFS (primary) that has all my data, and home (primary, ext4), in the same order.

When the computer booted, it showed my NTFS partition as a separate drive (external?) under the 'media' folder. I don't have any problem with it as long as my data stay safe and I can easily access it. My original plan was to install linux, move data from NTFS to /home, delete NTFS, extend /home.

So my question is, what's the problem with my current setup? Thanks.

Edit - corrected the order of partitions.

    Dumb question about HDD's

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:33 AM PST

So through the years i've acquired over a dozen 2tb, and 8tb WD purple label HDD's. at the same time my wife is a pretty avid photographer and literally has a few dozen TB's worth of photos and videos scattered over about 9 or 10 separate Blue label drives of less than 1tb memory.

Now, i know these drives are basically meant for Survellence and meant to write very fast but not "efficiently". Well, at least to my understanding.

My question to you guys is how wise would it be to use these as long term photo and video storage?

Can i just consolidate all these photon from these 10 Blue labels to one or two of these purple labels?

Can't get wine to install on Ubuntu 18.04

I'm new to linux and I want to use wine to run windows exe files/games on linux but whenever I try to install it I get dependency issues with the faudio install. I need wine installed to use Lutris. I followed this guide: https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=32192

I installed the amd_64 package but for the faudio i386 package won't install.

I've tried sudo apt --fix-broken install but the i386 package still won't install

    Am I missing something?

PCI passthrough into a Windows VM

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:50 AM PST

So I decided to try Linux for the first time today and I've been playing around trying to get a windows VM with PCI passthrough for GPU support working so as to be able to easily play Windows based games and use Windows based software while I slowly learn and grow accustom to Linux.

I found a guide on how to set up PCI passthrough and followed it with relative success up until the point where I have to create the VM at which point I'm greeted with the following

Unable to complete install: 'internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor' Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/asyncjob.py", line 89, in cb_wrapper callback(asyncjob, *args, **kwargs) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/create.py", line 2553, in _do_async_install guest.start_install(meter=meter) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtinst/guest.py", line 498, in start_install doboot, transient) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtinst/guest.py", line 434, in _create_guest domain = self.conn.createXML(install_xml or final_xml, 0) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 3603, in createXML if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virDomainCreateXML() failed', conn=self) libvirtError: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor

I've spent a couple of hours scouring for a solution and have come up empty, any help would be greatly appreciated

    Edit:

After playing around with my monitor settings (my monitor is considered powered off if not receiving an input, so I had to use picture in picture and use it as the primary display to alleviate this), the error being spat out has changed. The new error:

Unable to complete install: 'internal error: qemu unexpectedly closed the monitor' Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/asyncjob.py", line 89, in cb_wrapper callback(asyncjob, *args, **kwargs) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/create.py", line 2553, in _do_async_install guest.start_install(meter=meter) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtinst/guest.py", line 498, in start_install doboot, transient) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtinst/guest.py", line 434, in _create_guest domain = self.conn.createXML(install_xml or final_xml, 0) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 3603, in createXML if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virDomainCreateXML() failed', conn=self) libvirtError: internal error: qemu unexpectedly closed the monitor
