    Simple Questions - February 14, 2020

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

[OPINION] We should start recommending more high-fidelity audio products to people that have healthy budgets.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:09 AM PST

I just upgraded from a typical USB "high-end gaming headset" (Logitech G935) to a DAC/Amp and a nice pair of headphones with a desktop mic, and all I can say is that the difference in quality is overwhelming and quite honestly breathtaking. For example, I used to think the directional audio in Hell Let Loose was garbage, but I now realize that I was hardware limited by my headset's poor imaging and sound-stage. Also, I've found myself re-listening to my entire music library because... just wow.

I'd consider my audio upgrade to have a MUCH greater impact to my overall QoL than increased frames per second and I now classify its importance to be equivalent to having a high quality monitor. I can confidently say that my audio setup is my most satisfying addition to my rig since getting my ultrawide monitor.

The folks over at r/HeadphoneAdvice are very helpful and they have a solid community guide that can point you in the right direction. Z Reviews on YT is also an amazing resource, the guy is a true audiophile and knows his stuff. Here is a link to his guide for gaming audio gear.

At the very least, r/HeadphoneAdvice should be added to this sub's list of related Reddits.

So, my PC just caught on fire...

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 06:32 PM PST

I sat down at my computer to write an essay. I try to turn it on, it won't boot. So I turn the psu off and on and the blue light turns on indicating it's booting when I notice through the mesh at the top that something is shorted out and sparking and may be on fire. So I immediately unplug it and begin venting the room out from all the smoke. It looked like it was coming from behind the CPU cooler on the motherboard.

I have a 2600k, rx 580, 32 gb ddr3, a 650 watt corsair psu, micro atx LGA 1155 motherboard (I cant recall the brand or anything right now).

So really what I want to know is how to approach this, and whether or not it is safe to start pulling components out. For now, I'm staying on the toilet seat until I get the guts to go back.

    Edit: reposting with picture

Second edit: realized you can't post pictures so I'm gonna link it instead

So my graphics card just set on fire...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:48 AM PST

I have a HIS HD 7950 iceQ that just set on fire. This card has been used on a semi regular basis for years. I've been away for about 4 months, so its sat idle for a while. Played some games last night for several hours with no issues what so ever.. Today I turned my PC on and it was boot looping. Thought I could smell a tiny bit of burning, so I unplugged it, opened it up and gave it another go.

    This is the result: https://youtu.be/ToXuJhc0_Ag

Absolutely terrifying! So glad I caught it before leaving the room. Could have burnt my flat down! It was just continuously boot looping and setting on fire!

*Edit: Two in one day! Didn't even notice someone had already posted about their PC setting on fire today!

Repasted GPU and CPU with Kryonaut 20c difference on GPU and 10c difference on CPU

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:05 PM PST

So did I just do an absolute shit job of pasting the first time I did it 2 years ago?

My CPU was running high 70s low 80s while benching and my GPU was in 70s gaming and hitting up into the 80s during benching. I originally pasted with some cooler master paste and the GPU was the stock gigabyte paste. I thought the temps were normal because I have decent overclocks on both (8700k @ 5ghz 1.35v and 2080 @ 2025 and +1000 mem).

Just ran aida stress for 30 minutes and averaged 71 on CPU. I ran 3dmark stress test and CPU maxed out about 52 and GPU @ 55. The CPU temp is much better but the GPU is soooo much better. I had no idea that the stock gigabyte paste would be such shit. It was completely cured when I removed it, but the GPU isn't even 2 years old yet.

So I guess just a heads up if you have a gigabyte card, it might be worth repasting.

Air cooler with decent ram clearance

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:50 PM PST

Looking to replace my cpu cooler - an OG corsair h100 I've had now since 2011. it's performs fairly well considering its age but, its time for me to retire the old gal.

Was looking at the noctua d15 or dark pro 4 but it seems neither of these have the ram clearance I need for my ram (team group dark pros - 45mm Height)

Any recommendations on coolers that match those two in sound/performance but have the clearance as well?

I'm not opposed to another aio either as long as the noise level is less! (In comparison anywau)

    Thanks in advance!

I know how to bios update, but not sure of the procedure, should i insert the new bios in a flash from another pc, and insert it in my new pc with the chip inside the motherboard then bios update? Or should i just use my new pc and insert the chip inside then bios update from there?

    UEFI won't boot

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:36 PM PST

So here we are.I builded my second pc the last week and then taking it now but few things happened :

    - With a Windows 10 version I was totally unable to select the key before, it restarted from BIOS as always. (So now I'm taking windows 8.1 on this, windows 7 already on the other one)- I'm forced to use a UEFI to boot from now on, before I was able to select my old usb key to start the boot.

SO I won't say that much, I tried to record in 4k the problem I have with my old phone (so you'll get thats a bad joke)

    Here you go :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNBX-XUJUrM

    #baguetteforever

NB : I'm sorry if theres already a topic on that, just joined now. Anyway I don't need to talk about the setup it's only on the BIOS, except it's a Gigabyte BIOS, the advanced one can't reach the basic cause my mouse won't work too (but all usb ports are okay)

Should I wait for the RTX 3080 or get a 2080?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:50 PM PST

Title basically sums it up. Looking for a better gpu from a 1080Ti, and I'm hearing news that the 3080 series will be released in a couple months. Is this true, and if so, is it worth waiting? Will it be very superior over the 2080?

Help me finish this higher end PC build? 3900X + 2080 Super [$2000-2500]

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:47 PM PST

I want to build a pretty beefy PC for 1440p/144hz gaming, with the potential to play VR games sometime later this year when I can get a VR headset. I have some specific parts that I need in this build because Amazon has payment plans on certain items so I won't have to have ALL the money up front. I am unsure of compatibility issues so any information would be greatly appreciated.

I need to use this processor:

    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

And I need to use this graphics card:

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Super

Motherboard? Was looking to spend around 300 dollars for something nicer than the most basic. Also need at least 1 PCi express slot, and room for 32GB RAM.

RAM? I want 16GB of the best RAM I can buy within reason, and the ability to add another set of 16 GB in the near future. Want to be able to overclock my RAM as well.

SSD? Samsung 970 EVO SSD 1TB

Bought this recently for my current PC, was hoping to just swap it to the new build if it is possible?

Power supply? Thermaltake Grand 750W 80+ Gold Smart Zero

Bought this recently to replace my old one but never swapped them out. If possible I would like to just use this power supply?

Sound? I am curious about getting something a bit nicer for audio. If anyone can recommend some hardware to decently improve my sound quality with both my mic and my headphones, please share. My knowledge is lacking here, not going to lie. Willing to spend 200 but would prefer it stay lower than that.

Case? Again something nicer than the most basic. Would like something full size, hopefully $100 to $200 max.

Cooler? I need an aftermarket cooler for my processor so I can overclock it. Preferably without water cooling it. Unless water cooling is truly ideal for this processor when overclocked?

Would also be willing to spend about 50 bucks on RGB nonsense to make it especially "leet" if you have any suggestions ;)

I posted this on /r/buildmeapc but did not get any suggestions, I hope this is okay to post here.

    Budget build for Brothers GF

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:36 PM PST

This Build will mainly be used for light gaming (AION, CSGO, Rocket League) and also for Internet browsing, Youtube, etc.

This is my first take at a budget build, since i only ever build mid to high tier PC's

I allready have a old Case of mine that I will use, but i want to change the Fans of the Case (i know they are 3 Pin and not PWM but the case has a Fan controller)

I would be happy with any feedback that you can give me

    Best 27” 1440 144hz IPS

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:19 PM PST

Hey all! Title pretty much says it. I'm looking for any recommendations on the best 27" 1440 144hz IPS 1ms monitor out there. I have a budget of around $500 but I'm willing to increase a bit if it's a stellar monitor. This will be my 2nd monitor (or rather 3rd if you count by 1080 tv I'm using right now) and I'd like to use it for gaming as well as coding. I currently have a 27" dell TN panel and although I love it, I hear the ips have richer fuller colors and my eyes seem to get tired quickly after lots of screen time on the TN. I've seen a bunch of options on amazon from $300-450 and I will continue to dig through reviews on there - just thought I'd ask you awesome people here.

    Thanks all!

First computer build. Looking for some thoughts before buying.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:25 AM PST

Current pc has an gtx 760. I think its time for an upgrade.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VrFQcq

Didnt go for gen4 m.2 but went with the x570 motherboard because of compatibility and future proofing just incase.

Only things im not sure about is cooling and case. How hyped is the wraith prism cooler? Is it a mistake trying to save a couple of dollars on the stock cooler or is it really that good?

Dont know much about cases but didnt want to buy an expensive one if cheaper ones do just fine. Not worried about sound proofing and i like hardened glass.

    RAM problems

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:49 PM PST

So I recently got some new RAM, I put all four sticks of the new stuff in, and only three of the sticks of RAM lot up. The of wouldnt boot, and I got an error code that meant no RAM detected. I took out the sticks that wasn't lighting up, and the same thing happened. After that I took another stick out, so that the RAM could run in Dual channel, and it booted. What should I do? I have my old RAM that is the same speed and timings as the new RAM, but from a different company, can I use that to test if it's a defective RAM stick?

I just pulled my Pc apart and need some help

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:48 PM PST

First of all, I hope this is the right subreddit for this question and used the right tag, please correct me if not. Also english is not my first language, so please correct me on that too.

So I recently upgraded my graphics card from a gtx 950 to an radeon rx vega 56. After that I had problems with recurring power surges. I figured out it was a problem with my psu (a lc-power lc500h-12 v2.2) because I somehow got the wattage numbers wrong. So I ordered a corsair tx750m as an upgrade. Fast forward to now, I pulled pretty much every cable out of my pc to pull out my old psu. Now, I have a replacement cable for every old cable but one. It is a 4-pin cable that went into my asus h110m-a motherboard. Above the connection there was the label "atx 12v" printed on the motherboard, as in the picture above. My question is: Do I need that plug to be filled?

    Thanks in advance!

Is integrated graphics a good idea?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:57 PM PST

I was thinking of putting an amd 3400g in my next build, and then saving up for a 1660s. Is this a good idea, or should I get a dedicated gpu now (I wont be able to afford a 1660s, so maybe a 1050)?

Which midi or full tower provides best cooling?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:26 PM PST

    Good evening!

I have started my journey towards building my first PC. So starting from the bottom, I already know which CPU and motherboard I want, but I am having a serious hard time deciding which case to pick! Everybody talks about which chip set and size - and I know, that I will be heading for a X570 and ATX, but - as a lot of reviewers outline... - cooling is key! I have just not managed to figure out how to spot if a case has good cooling or not, and I neither know to head for a midi- or full tower. Anyone who can help me out?

    I have already looked into:

    1. Thermaltake Level 20 GT ARGB
    2. Fractal Design Meshify S2 White TG

Any advice will be much appreciated!

    Cheers!

I do not live near a micro center

I do not want to go higher then $420

    Here is my current build
