This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    I ordered a 1060 on eBay and received a 1080

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:23 AM PST

I informed the seller they sent me the wrong card, they told me it was their mistake and I could keep it. I got the drivers installed and checked GPU Z, so it's not a fake card.

I don't know where I got this good luck, but I'm hoping it sticks around.

What’s the difference between a $250 monitor and a $500 monitor if they have the same refresh rate and response time?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:20 PM PST

I've been considering getting a 240hz monitor and I'm seeing the pricing range anywhere from $250 to over $500. So what differences should I be looking for when considering the more expensive options if they all have 240hz and 1ms?

Is it okay to buy a used monitor? What things should I look out for when buying a used monitor?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:25 PM PST

I want to get a 144hz monitor but I don't have enough money to spend at the moment, should I just save up and get it brand new or go for used?

I riped my Amd rysen 2600 out of the socket

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:18 PM PST

I built my PC it turned on first try and everything was working perfect but, one week later it wasn't outputting video. I went through all the troubleshooting tips and nothing worked so i decided to just rebuilt it to hopefully fix what ever the issue was.

I took everything out of the case put the motherboard on the box I then unscrewed the CPU cooler screws and tried to pull the cooler off. I thought the thermal compound was just a bit solid so i pulled harder, the cooler came off.... with the CPU fused the the bottom and the retention leaver still down on the socket. i used a heat gun on the cooler to warm the thermal compound and twisted the CPU off there was 2 bent pins on the bottom so after seeing that and having a mild panic attack i slightly pushed them straight and went on with the build.

After putting everything back together and finishing the cable management up I closed the side panel and screwed the acrylic side panel back on and pressed the power button. IT WORKED IT FUCKING WORKED it booted up and has been working perfect for the last week, I was really nervous as this was my first build. I would also like to say thank you to all you guys for helping me put together the part list .

Don't let worrying about whether or not you got the best deal ruin your PC building experience.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:07 PM PST

Some may not worry about looking for sales and buy their parts immediately, but I think the majority of us spend weeks and even months waiting for the best possible deal on a component.

Don't get me wrong, deal hunting is a super fun part of PC building, but at some point (at least for me) it can almost be obsessive. After weeks of searching, I'll finally buy a part. Then I see it for $5-10 cheaper the following week, and I'll feel awful. I'll debate returning it for the next few days, and sometimes I do, and sometimes I just decide it's not worth the hassle, and I live with the buyers remorse.

I just need to understand that technology is always going to decrease in value. In the long run, (unless you are on a very strict budget) $10 saved on a few parts really won't make that much of a difference.

So enjoy researching components and looking for deals, but don't obsess over saving just a few dollars here and there.

M.2 ssd potential conflict with sata ports?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 03:57 PM PST

Hello all:) Wanting an ssd to install windows onto and a couple of games but when adding it to my build on pc part picker I get the note: "The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled." What exactly does this mean and is it an issue.

    Thank you!

Did I miss something? My PC seems to under-perform

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

First of all, here are my specs:

Processor: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Processor
Graphics: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 STRIX 8GB
Motherboard: Asus STRIX H270F GAMING ATX
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 16GB

My computer doesn't seem to be performing to expectations. I just updated the BIOS (it was way out of date), and all other drivers are up-to-date but it doesn't seem to help. I just ran a 3DMark benchmark for Time Spy and got a score of 5979. I compared it with similar systems (same CPU and GPU) and benchmarks run in the last year, and my score is just below average. (Here is a comparison of my system with the top benchmark) Clock speeds seem to either be similar or, in some cases, mine are higher. Is there something I missed when building the system? Something I didn't install or something I did improperly? I need some help troubleshooting why my system is barely average. Or am I just expecting too much? I mentioned clock speeds because I'm not sure if any of these systems are overclocked.

    Thank you for your help!

What RAM is best for me?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 03:20 PM PST

So I'm still on the fence on what ram to pair with my 3700X and 2070 Super. Currently i have the 3600mhz g skill trident z neo 16gb. I've been reading random forums saying 3200 is great just oc it. Then on the other hand I've read that "ryzen chips perform better with faster ram", does this mean the 3600mhz ram category or something else? Any help to better understand this situation is greatly appreciated. Also if you could break down your answers as I am still learning acronyms for all these components. CHEERS!

    Motherboard and new CPU

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 03:18 PM PST

    Hey Everyone!

I currently have the "ASUS TUF Z370-Plus Gaming" as my motherboard with a "i5-8400" as my CPU. But i were looking for a new CPU and found the i9-9900k which, i am very interresed in!

But i am worried that they might not be compatible.. I tried testing in System builder and it gave me this message

" Some Intel Z370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions. "

Do any of you know if they would work togehter? :)

Finally time to move on from my 4790k. How does this look?

My current 4790k is getting long in the tooth and I have some money burning a hole in my wallet. I will be bringing over a 5700XT, Samsung 970 Evo (which I might buy another and RAID 0 for funsies) and a Corsair RM750 2019 edition modular PSU. I play lots of stuff like PUBG, SC2, RDR2 and want to be able to play these games while also running some VMs in the background for some home lab stuff. I want a nice motherboard and don't mind spending for "top of the line". I also require Intel NIC on whatever board I buy.

My main questions center around, how good is the Thermaltake AIO I have there? I'm buying it to match the case. Otherwise I'd buy a corsair but they're all made by asetek anyways right? I don't give two shits about RGB as well and in fact will probably replace the RGB fans with Noctuas or Cougars with excellent bearings in some obnoxious brown/orange throw-up color. So what do you think?

I also have a 1440p 144hz IPS Freesync monitor. The 4790k is going to end up in a NAS doing torrenting and file storage. Probably downclock the hell out of it, install UNRAID and fill it full of SSDs and HDDs. Most of this stuff will be bought at Micro Center as well.

    Budget $450 Gaming PC

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:18 PM PST

Looking to get my hands on a Gaming PC with a Green Aesthetic case and overall look. I'm no expert at building PCs but willing to try and I'm learning as I go. Would be great to have something around the i7 or AMD ryzen 7 , but as long as it can run Games such as Warframe and Soul Worker. Would be great if I could get something that can be upgraded as I go once I have more funds. I would like for run these games not at minimum but recommend specs or better. Is it possible?

    GPU question for 1440p

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:14 PM PST

My buddy is finally going to start budgeting for a gaming pc this year, and I am trying help him spec out his components. His budget is $1000 USD without peripherals. He is looking for 1440p and a baseline of 60 fps (bonus if more). His games vary to all types, so he is realistic to the settings needed per title.

The first things we want to hammer out is the gpu and cpu. My initial thought was a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 5700 XT since that seems to be the best price to performance in that budget. My question is, is the 5700 XT needed though? Can he get the realistic performance he is looking for with a card in the next price tier down? Again, just looking for a solid baseline of 60 fps.

    1080p 144hz vs 1440p 60Hz for gaming/photo editing?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:08 AM PST

I know this question has been asked a lot before but the majority of time it's gaming only, whereas I have the Photoshop side of things to consider too.

I'm looking into upgrading my system and in a few months time my monitor.

    I'm currently using a 24inch 1080p 60Hz Dell u2412.

My system usage is 50/50 gaming and photo editing and I'm torn between going for a 24" 1080p 144hz (adaptive sync) or a 27"1440p 60Hz (no sync) A 1440p 144Hz is simply too expensive because I need an IPS panel ( can't edit on a TN).

I play a mixture of games both online FPS type and more story based Witcher 3 sorts and I know that both monitors would have their advantages.

Obviously the 144Hz would be great for 'fast' games, but does it make much of a difference to single player games? Or would the bigger screen real estate and detail be better for those games and Photoshop work?

I'm planning to be using an RTX 2060 Super as my GPU.

I'd really appreciated any input from anyone here.

My budget for the screen will be around £300 UK.
