Transfer current OS between laptops Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST I put Linux Mint on an old, bad laptop. I would like to transfer it to my better laptop. Is it possible to install Mint on that one too and then use a snapshot, or is a snapshot tied to a hardware configuration? I'd like to transfer the OS instead of dtarting from scratch because I spent a while figuring out media libraries and stuff and it would suck having to do that again. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:08 AM PST Hello comrades, I am getting started in linux programming and I have 2 problems to solve, of which I do not know the resolution. If anyone could help me I would be forever grateful. Thanks! 1 - Identify directories whose size is greater than a given size, specified by the user as a script argument, and compress them. 2 - Enter the server and create a file in your area by making last -f /var/log/wtmp > teste.wtmp. That file contains the history of system logins and logouts. The goal is to know, for each user, how many times has she/he entered the system and the total usage time. If the user has not logged out, count the time until the present moment. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Feb 2020 11:52 AM PST Hey! I'm new to linux, although this seems to be a UEFI problem... After creating a new partition on windows, Mint seems to install fine, and runs perfect on live mode from a USB. However, when trying to reboot the laptop after the installation, I see the Toshiba logo... and a really quick message saying: "System BootOrder not found. Initializing defaults. Reset System" ...and again the toshiba logo in an endless loop. I did the first option when installing it, the one that says "install linux alongside windows", I haven't tried the "something else" option. Would that make any difference? Now, secure boot is disabled and FastBoot doesn't exist as an option in my uefi configuration page. Don't really know what else I can try here. After hours of interneting I've found a couple of threads where people did THIS, however I don't really know what's going on there, so I'm scared of doing something wrong, also don't even know if that would fix my problem. Another thread said THIS was probably enough, but again, not idea what I'm doing... THIS GUY seems to have exactly the same problem as me, but he also seems much more knowledgeable than I am with computers, so even though it seems he fixed his problem, I don't know how he did it, because there isn't a step by step solution on this specific thread. So, I guess my question is, how do I do what the guy did in the last link? or, would any of the other 2 links do the trick? I'm fairly new messing with bootloaders, uefi and stuff... Thanks! Posted: 16 Feb 2020 10:59 AM PST Hello to everyone! I've a very stupid question but I cannot find any definitive answer online. I'm switching to linux (ubuntu 18.4) and I've realized a lot of benefit compared to windows. However, I'm not able to find a solution to have the same experience of my touchpad (HP spectre x360). I mean simply scroll and pinch-to-zoom. The scrolling it's ok but a little bit buggy. Not so smooth as windows. But i haven't found any solution for the zoom. I think that is a very important part of a laptop daily use but apparently is not so important for the average user! Does someone know any solution? [link] [comments] |
Manjaro won't detect external monitor Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:13 PM PST Just installed Manjaro XFCE on my laptop. Everything is going pretty well except for that fact that it doesn't detect my external monitor. The monitor is HDMI and I'm running on the video hybrid Intel Nvidia 440xx prime drivers. I also tried the 435 prime and the 430 bumblebee drivers, none of them work. To clarify, when I open up "Display" only the laptop monitor shows up. I have "configure new displays when connected" enabled. I have tried restarting and reconnecting the HDMI cable multiple times, I'm not sure what to do. I'm still kinda new to all of this so sorry if this wasn't enough information. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I cannot adjust screen red on Whonix in VirutalBox Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:20 PM PST I tried for hours I dunno what I'm doing wrong. I tried VirtualBox guest additions, but the download failed. So I tried the this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVb5yWKdgvg but still didn't work. I'm about to give up on Whonix. How do I make screen higher res? [link] [comments] |
How To Install A Fsync Enabled Kernel Tutorial Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:04 PM PST Hi everyone, so I've heard that using a Fsync enabled kernel can help with performance when gaming on Linux, but after looking online, information on how to actually install one appeared to be rather sparse. So to make it easier for anyone that wanted to try it out for themselves, I have created a tutorial on exactly that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuUjzZy0obY&feature=youtu.be This video covers what steps are required in order to download a pre-compiled Fsync enabled kernel, plus additional modules that will need to be installed if you have a nVidia GPU. I am using Manjaro for this video, but I understand that Ubuntu based distributions can use a PPA. So the question is, does it make a difference in comparison to Esync, and in my experience? The answer is yes and no. I did notice with games such as Kingdom Come Deliverance and The Outer Worlds that stuttering was reduced, especially when entering new areas or compiling shader cache. But in other games it appeared to make no or little difference. For reference, my hardware is as follows: nVidia GXT 1080 AMD Ryzen 5 1500X 16GB DDR4 RAM 1TB Kingston SSD Hopefully this video will be helpful, and if you want to support the content on my YouTube channel, I would appreciate a subscription or constructive feedback. Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST Hi everyone, big noob here. I wanted to resurrect an old win7 asus laptop (i3, 500gb hdd, 4gb ram, mo dedicated video). I started downloading manjaro, I installed manjaro, but I have a lot of problems. There's basically NOTHING working (the wireless card works because i see the wifi's, but i can't connect, web browsers don't work) so I decided to pick another os (pop and then fedora) and try them out to see if I could have them running properly. Problem is, when i try to boot from USB, I don't get to the installation process. Everything works fine, there are a lot of words flashing down, everything is green, and then it all goes dark. The ISO is the right one, no nvidia only intel installations, I usually use etcher to flash the drive, and I tried to use both usb 2 and 3 ports on my laptop, neither work (even if they actually give different results). The bios doesn't seem to have many settings (only the boot options and a uefi option that is disabled). What can I do? Where do I start? [link] [comments] |
Needs some help with partitioning Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST Hi!I am very new to Linux, I am looking for buying laptop and installing Manjaro on it, but until then I am testing stuff on Virtual machine. So, I am installing Manjaro KDE 18.1.5 and I want to do partitions manually instead of automatic. I am setting system partition and swap partition, everything is fine for now but, when I am setting up second drive and then try to do something on it(like making folder), it says I don't have permission. Also I don't know if this should be that way or not but when I go into that second drive it is in /run/media/*user*/*Some ID* directory (At least I think it is ID, for me it is f86eabd5-7a6d-4a33-aocd-9c04cef458d4), I can change permission of it with chmod but I don't know if I should... Did I do it properly and it should be that way or I did something wrong? Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu clock freezes while watching movies. Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:16 PM PST I am a total newbie and I have a problem with my system clock on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. When I am watching movies, the clock freezes. It starts working again only if I get back to the desktop. It's quite annoying, so I would be very grateful if anyone had an idea how to solve it. Help! Trying to boot Sparky Linux on a fresh external SSD. Posted: 16 Feb 2020 11:18 AM PST Hey /r/linux4noobs ! I have a gaming pc I built around 2013 with a windows 7 virus I got from downloading ps3 isos online, ive been wanting to switch to linux for years so this is it. I formatted the hard drive, put sparky linux on there, used rufus to make the hard drive bootable and when I launch my boot menu on my pc with the hard drive hooked up it will NOT launch Sparky, it just goes to my busted up windows hard drive no matter what I do. I've tried everything I can think of and did a lot of googling around and this is my last resort. Thanks reddit! [link] [comments] |
Command line command won't "complete"? Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:38 AM PST Apologies for the bad wording of my question, I'm not sure quite how to phrase the question (this probably explains why my googling hasn't returned any useful results either). I have run a command at the command and while the text within the command says it is complete, I'm not getting a "return" where I can then enter my next command. My cursor appears but I cann't excute and commands with what I type. In the screenshot below you can see that the command I ran (python Tautulli.py) says that it has completed, but my cursor is sat at the bottom not allowing me to enter anything else. I can type text but it is not executing them as commands. Should this be telling me that the command is still being executed, and that I need to wait? I left it for an hour but nothing else happened, so I am unsure how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:07 AM PST People on r/unixporn often post rices/setups with i3 or bsp. From what I've heard, they are based entirely on the terminal. And... that's about all i know. I'm asking if it is worth switching to one of them as a semi-newbie. I am using Manjaro and i think it offers an i3 version. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Feb 2020 08:33 AM PST I just slotted in a 10TB disk today to serve as backup for the existing 10TB disk I have in my home server (running Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS). After performing an rsync the two drives report the same "used" space using df -H, but different "available" space: The disks report the same total size to fdisk -l inspection (https://pastebin.com/KmsWehaE). What's going on here? [link] [comments] |
kubuntu, mint and vlc and some other trouble Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:27 AM PST hi all let me explain the problem as best as i can.. i use kubuntu and mint, kinda going back and forth because of different problems so i will try to compare i access network videos via thunar or dolphin by making an executable icon/command smb:// by doing this mint mounts this location when i click an icon but kubuntu seems that it does not problem i have with vlc in kubuntu is it doesnt want to open remote video file on windows share and it allways starts copying it first wich is not what i want(initialy it did play them but stopped). Would it not copy if it was mounted? how do i do that? mint problem is that sometimes video jerks and stutters and sometimes freezes( wifi power management is off, vlc stream cache changed to way more then default) i like kubuntu look and feel a bit more then mint, also it runs cooler for some reason, less fan spin on my laptop but i would like to fix the vlc mint problem also if possible laptop is x250, with access to 5ghz and 2.4ghz wifi, both have same problems so its not a connection, both mint and kubuntu updated to last versions i am a noob, so sorry for lack of any additional info i should have given [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Feb 2020 08:11 AM PST Anybody out there using Expandrive? I'm doing a test run with it. I've been moving folders into it (one at a time) and the upload process is slowing my computer down to a halt. I previously tried Insync and pCloud...on those, the upload speed was about what I would expect from my Internet connection, but the program didn't slow my whole machine down. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or is this a known side effect of Expandrive? [link] [comments] |
Bad Calibri font rendering. Any fix? Posted: 16 Feb 2020 07:29 AM PST I've recently installed Vista fonts on my HP notebook with Kubuntu on it through wget -qO- http://plasmasturm.org/dl/vistafonts-... | bash and it is unreadable. Can I fix that somehow or is there any way to install this font through Wine somehow? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 18.4 sandbox and antivirus to prevent infection Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:56 AM PST Hello, I am affraid about viruses downloaded from internet or email attachments. I try to solve this by download file to something like linux's sandbox, then scan it. Can you evaluate my idea and tell me about some good sandbox-similar and antivirus programs? Is ClamTk good option? [link] [comments] |
What "powerful" actually means? Posted: 16 Feb 2020 03:02 AM PST A lot of time, more in *nix spaces than in others, people say about a command/feature/entire application that it's "powerful". But what it's actually mean? Just that the user can do a lot of different stuff with it? [link] [comments] |
