Internet works very slow in Linux Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:08 AM PST Hi to all! I have a dual-boot system: Windows at SSD and Linux at HDD. When I work with Windows, my Internet speed (ethernet) is fast: 600 MBit/sec. But when I work with Linux, my Internet is veeery slow: about 12-14 MBit/sec (checked with speedtest and Steam download speed). My Linux system is: Kubuntu 19.10. My motherboard is: MSI A320M-BAZOOKA. I use my motherboard ethernet adapter. Some notes:

Why does Linux access NTFS folders faster than Windows? Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:19 PM PST Hi everyone, i always wondered why is Linux faster accesing NTFS drives/folders compared to Windows? I have a 1TB HDD with 223 GB remaining formatted in NTFS from my Windows days, which is filled with movies. Accesing the drive in Windows is sluggish as hell, and Windows often crashes on said Drive. Whereas on the same machine, every Linux distro i tried never had a performance hitch accesing that drive. Why is that? [link] [comments] |

I'd like to merge them into a single 500GB SSD drive, and make both systems bootable through either windows' or linux's bootloader. [link] [comments] |
Monitoring CPU on Linux Mint for overclocking/downcore Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:03 PM PST Is there any utilities that exist to monitor the temperature of each core, watts on each core, etc.? The system monitor gives too little information to be useful to me for overclocking/downcore and I don't want to guess as to if my CPU is functioning okay. [link] [comments] |
Help disabling touch pad across systems Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:54 AM PST Hey! I want to disable the touch pad, and I want to use a script to this automatically. I know that I can disable the touch pad by typing then finding the id But I want this to work across systems, and the ID won't be the same on all systems. For now I've added What's the "right way" of doing this? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |

Pacman not doing anything [Manjaro on Pinebook Pro] Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:09 AM PST Hi, i have this machine for a month now and it worked all flawlessly. But two days ago, I went to upgrade with "sudo pacman -Syu" and nothing happened. It asked me the password but instantly after went back to the promp, not echoeing anything. I tried install or searching for software and the same results. If i do the command without the sudo, it not ask for permissions, it simply shows the prompt next line. Someone have help? Thank you! Does Linux work on chromebooks natively? Also, which distro? Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:34 AM PST Hi, I need a portable machine I'd like to use primarily for studying, and I come from a Windows-only background, so I'd like to learn Linux as well. Specifically, I've always been a GUI person - I consider myself fairly quick at generally navigating GUIs with a mouse and keyboard, so I'd like to switch it up and try a keyboard-only approach, and hopefully learn some CLI tools and commands along the way. Here's the software I would need:
My questions are:
Since my use cases are quite lightweight I'm looking for a super cheap laptop with decent battery life - hence the question about chromebooks. I know Chrome OS has a feature called Crostini or Linux (Beta) which is essentially a VM for running Linux, but I have no interest in Chrome OS so I would need to install Linux natively. If that is even possible, which distribution would be best for it (and the uses highlighted above) and how would I go about installing it? P.S. Funnily enough, even though I've never used Linux my username does come from Debian. [link] [comments] |
USB Recovery System for backing up and restoring current OS Posted: 04 Feb 2020 04:18 AM PST I would like to Backup my current SSD (Windows 10) before i wipe the SDD and install Linux. For this i would like to use a bootable USB Stick with Backup & Recovery Software and Backup the whole SSD to a USB HDD. So that i can in case of trouble restore the SSD to it's current state. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |

14TB HDD - Does it work out of the box under MX Linux? Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:55 PM PST Dear all, just a quick check if I can simply drop a 14TB HDD in my PC (last year Ryzen 5 2600 system with a B350 board), format as EXT4 an go along? Or do I i.e. need to partition it before? I'm running MX-Linux 18.3 with a 5.1 kernel. [link] [comments] |
How to bootload openSUSE from another distribution's GRUB? Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:44 PM PST I tried to be smart and set up a triple boot system (using EFI) with Fedora (mbr/primary guid), Windows 10 and openSUSE, using only Fedora's GRUB. So when installing openSUSE I didn't specify any ESP i.e. /boot/efi and only created a partition for root. My question is: How should I go about creating the right initframs & GRUB entry to be able to boot on openSUSE from Fedora's GRUB? I'd like to avoid reinstalling any OS if possible... Thanks in advance for you kind help! [link] [comments] |
Is it harmful to have one thread pinned at 100% on my CPU? Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:30 PM PST I run Linux Mint 19.3 and am using a Ryzen 5 2600x. I play Dwarf Fortress frequently which is only optimized for a single core at a time with no option for multi-core. Is there an increased risk with running a single thread at 100% usage for hours at a time? [link] [comments] |

Getting icons of open applications to appear on taskbar Posted: 04 Feb 2020 11:02 AM PST When I was customizing my desktop on KDE Plasma, I got rid of all my pins since I set up application dashboard with favorites. But now icons for open programs don't have appear on the task bar. I have active window widget set up and it kind of works for switching between open applications, but I would prefer to just see whats open on my taskbar so I can just click on that. Especially since (before they stopped showing) the task bar would only show the applications relevant to that virtual desktop, where as with active window when I move my mouse to the corner of the screen to switch apps it shows me all apps opened across all desktops. How can I make it so that open applications appear in the task bar of their specific virtual desktop? [link] [comments] |
no space on hdd with 46GB free Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:07 AM PST So I filled up my Storage drive. Or so I got a notice that I did. At the time, I didn't really check. Just sighed and deleted a few gigs of stuff. Also emptied trash. Now I have space but I don't have space. I booted from USB and did fsck -l /dev/sdb4 and got a superblock error. I googled what to do and while I can't remember or cite exactly what I did (USB boot), it was some command to find backup superblocks and then something like I got errors about things needed to be narrower. Yes to a few and eventually hit 'a' . It fixed a bunch of narrower errors, a few other things, crazy random characters filled the screen, and it was done. I ran again and it instantly replied with (as it does now) However, the drive is still 'full' Help? Also, I can still access the drive and read it. I don't think it's a good idea to try to write to it right now. [link] [comments] |
How do I change desktop environment from cinnamon to i3? Posted: 04 Feb 2020 10:20 AM PST I am currently using Arch with Cinnamon desktop environment but want to swap over to i3, I researched a few tutorials on my specific situation and couldn't find any, I then researched just swapping environment and still couldn't find any. I believe this to be because I am so new to Arch and linux as a whole that I don't know what exactly to search to find my specific need. I attempted to do an install on a VM but it completely broke my user account and made the root account almost unusable. I got an error "exit 127" or something on i3 on the root account and cinnamon didn't even work anymore. This has scared me because I already have reinstalled Arch a few times and don't want to reinstall everything again, I just want to change my desktop environment. [link] [comments] |

Need method confirmation for dual booting Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:34 AM PST Hi, I'm wanting to do a dual boot between Win10 and Manjaro. I take this occasion to have a complete and clean reinstall of my OS. I plan to delete all data and partition my disks with a Gparted live USB. The partition will be 550Go for Windows ( split in two 150Go for the system 400Go for personal data). Maybe this is useless and just need to wait for the Win10 installer to divide the 500Go as it wants ? Then a 100 Go (NTFS) to exchange files between Win10 and Manjaro. For the "linuxian" 550 Go, I will make a swap of 16 Go, a root of 50 Go and the rest for /home. So as the partition is made, I will reinstall Win10 thanks to a USB and choose the two partitions I organized. Maybe I only need to select the partition I chose to stock the system and it will automatically detect that there are other partitions in NTFS ? After the installation is complete. I will boot Manjaro on a other Live USB. And the adventure begins ... I also saw that there is a need of EFI boot partition (~200 Mo), but that it is common to all OS. So will Windows create this file and Manjaro detect it automatically ? Thanks in advance for the answers, if you managed to perceived what I wanted to say ;) Edit : oh I forgot to say I have two disks and I want Win10 installed on one and Manjaro on the other :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:57 AM PST The package system is broken Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems. libegl-mesa0: Depends: libgbm1 (= 20.0~git2001291930.db19e9~oibaf~b) but 20.1~git2002040730.df6a2a~oibaf~b is installed I am a new user to Linux, so I have no idea how to fix this. Everything seems to be working fine regardless and I have tried the best rated answer from https://askubuntu.com/questions/118749/package-system-is-broken-how-to-fix-it. I'm unable to find my package manager as mentioned in the 2nd highest rated answer. I'm on Zorin OS 15. Appreciate any help. [link] [comments] |
