    Acer Nitro 5 undervolting question

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 02:27 PM PST

Hi guys, I own an Acer Nitro 5, equiped with i5-9300h, gtx 1650 ,512gb ssd. Due to high temps (90°C) while playing, I was forced to undervolt the cpu up to -135mV, beside that I also made the turbo boost from 4.1ghz to 3.5. Now the max temp during gaming is 75°C and 56°C GPU. Are these temps normal for a game like CS GO in a laptop like this ? Also did I do anything bad with undervolting etc. ?

    Thank you in advance

Why is my laptop slow and laggy?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 02:11 PM PST

So I think my laptop has some decent specs. I have listed them below. I have also installed a fresh copy of windows 10. I don't do anything too intensive. Just using chrome, word, and watch Netflix, the laptop is extremely slow at times and I cant figure out why. can I please get some help? also, I understand the processor is old, but I shouldn't be this slow right? for example, it takes a good 10-20 seconds for chrome to open

    Specs:

    Laptop - hp elitebook 9470m

    Processor - i5-3427

    Ram - 16gb ddr3

    Storage - 500gb SSD

    Budget laptop recommendation for photoshop

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:51 PM PST

I really want/need a new laptop. I have a chromebook but I want a real computer, one that can run photoshop. I'm a high school student so I don't need it for a job or anything, I just want to hook up a drawing tablet to it and use photoshop. I was wondering if anyone could recommend one to me, preferably under $400? I'm totally fine with refurbished too. Or if someone can just tell me what requirements there are, like ram and and memory and stuff.

Highly portable, durable laptop with eGPU compatibility

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:24 PM PST

I am in the Army so I tend to get sent to locations which are dirty/dusty and not very kind to wimpy laptops. In normal day to day work, it would be great to have a laptop with solid battery life. I also like to game so I am looking for something I could connect an eGPU to for more docked desktop style use.

My current laptop is an MSI G63VR which is generally good in that it's thin & light enough and still can run any game I've thrown at it. I do wish it was a bit more robust - the screen is pretty flexible to where it's getting the ghost keyboard imprint on it from being carried around in a backpack a few times. Also, battery life is OK doing productivity (excel, web browsing, word, etc...) but isn't trustworthy enough for me to leave the charger at home.

My wife has a Surfacebook 2 which I really like except for the fact that it can't connect to an eGPU. It's light enough, feels solid, and has a good keyboard. Also the pen has come in handy once or twice when I felt like messing with illustrator.

All that being said, any recommendations? I've seen the lenovo yoga 730 but it looks like it's going to be replaced soon. Anything else to look at?

/r/LaptopDeals: A place to get laptop recommendations and the most recent laptop deals!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:01 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am a moderator over at /r/LaptopDeals. I noticed that posts on this subreddit about what laptop is a good fit for a someone or what good deals there are on laptops rarely get responses. As a person who has been actively helping the laptop community through /r/LaptopDeals over the past year, I would like to extend my help to users on this subreddit.

Our subreddit, /r/LaptopDeals, constantly has members of the laptop community posting deals. The best deals typically end up on the hot page of the subreddit, so that is a good place to watch if you want to see what deals are currently available. Additionally, there we have weekly request threads for anyone looking for a laptop. Simply fill out the form and a knowledgeable person on the subreddit will give a response! The most recent weekly request thread was recently updated for this week. You can visit the thread through this link.

Additionally, many users on the subreddit, including myself, compile lists so that users have an idea of what they can expect to get in a laptop depending on the use case and price range. My most recent edition of the Best General Use Laptops can be found here, while my most recent edition of the Best Gaming Laptops can be found here.

There are a few sister subreddits that are also maintained by the members of /r/LaptopsDeals.

If anyone has any questions about the subreddit /r/LaptopDeals or its sister subreddits, please let me know!

HP pavilion x360 15.6 worth upgrading hardware?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

I recently repaired this laptop (I found it in the trash in my workplace). So far threw $175 to repair it and I'm considering to throw another $133 in upgrading the ram to 16gb add in a nvme and ssd.

Current laptop specs are...i5 8250u, intel optane nvme, 1tb 5400rpm hdd, and 8gb ddr4 ram.

It's worth almost $600 new. I would spend about $320 in total after the repair and if I were to upgrade the hardware maybe even less if I were to use some ssds lying around.

My question is would it be worth upgrading? Or should I try to sell it and save the money to buy something better? I know the main complaint about this laptop is the build quality (it's pretty bad if you were to compare it to it's competitors and even other HP 2 in 1s especially at it's price range).

Can you game with the MX250 GPU?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:38 PM PST

The new laptop that I'm buying will be used for school work a majority of the time, however, I'd like to do some light gaming (CSGO, Diablo 3/4). Will the MX250 suffice?

HP Probook G6 - How on earth do you use the Ethernet Port?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:03 PM PST

Hey Everyone, I'm setting up a new laptop for my co-worker - an HP Probook 450 G6.

This is going to sound completely dumb, but I can't figure out how to use the Ethernet port on he the laptop

It looks like HP Changed from a standard port to a retractable latch to hold the cable in place.

The latch looks like it's held closed with a spring - if you open it with a finger, you can feel tension on the latch.

The problem is the latch doesn't want to open far enough to fully insert a cable. If I press a cable into the opening, the latch expands, however it doesn't open far enough for the cable to "lock" and reach the pins.

So am I missing something obvious with this? I feel like I've been fiddling with this enough that it could easily become broken (or marred up) once I hand the laptop over to another employee.

I checked the manual and all it says "Attach the Ethernet Cord".... which doesn't help with this situation.

    Thanks!

Need a laptop for university studies, can't decide between the two linked below.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:33 AM PST

I'm doing electrical engineering at uni in Australia and need a laptop for assignments and researching. I have a PC I built for when I need to use AutoCAD so I only need a basic laptop. I want this simple stuff to load when I open it, not 5 seconds later. I found two laptops I'm interested in, one being $400 and the other being $600, I just would like to know if it's worth getting the more expensive laptop and why, or if there are better options at my price range.

Lenovo IdeaPad $400 laptop link: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-s145-69-14-inch-laptop.html

Acer Swift 1 $600 laptop link:

NEED TO DECIDE TODAY BETWEEN THESE TWO

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 10:45 AM PST

I'm looking for a laptop for my university and personal stuff, mainly for coding but i'm planning on starting with Unity soon. I need to decide as soon as possible but still can't make a decision. The main concern is the compensation between graphics and processor, one having 8th gen processor(8250u) with MX130 and the other having 7th gen processor(7200u) with MX150. What should i choose?

    Acer aspire 5

    i5 7200u

    8gb ram

    Nvidia MX150

    Acer aspire 3

    i5 8250u

    8gb ram

    Nvidia MX130

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:59 AM PST

Does anyone know if anyone has attempted to upgrade the processor on the LG gram? I want to increase speeds on my gram, I am upgrading the storage and RAM but not the processor.

If anyone knows if there is a guide/tutorial on replacing the processor on the LG gram or similar laptops please let me know.
