Can I run manjaro minimal on Pop OS? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:46 AM PST I'm going to be running Pop!_Os on my laptop, because I like the Debian package manager instead of Arch, if I run the manjaro minimal (the environment without a package manager) will it keep the debian package manager? I’m trying to install lubuntu on an external hard drive. Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:44 AM PST As the title states, I've been trying to install lubuntu on an external hard drive. But as soon as I boot into it, I get a screen which says "minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, tab lists possible command completions. Anywhere else tab lists possible device or file completions." I tried the "boot-repair" using the live usb, which it doesn't work. I'm on a surface pro 4, if it matters. Please help. I feel like I'm doing something fundamentally wrong Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:18 PM PST I've had a screen flickering issue on Linux ever since I switched monitors. I've tried using Arch, Ubuntu, PopOS, and openSUSE with different DEs. My known good install from before the switch, several fresh installs, and live sessions all flicker the same way. It doesn't matter whether I use LTS or rolling. Installing different display drivers does neither improve nor worsen the situation. The issue intensifies whenever more is going on in a small space (using etcher made it spasm out even more than playing the video). It doesn't happen at all in TTYs, but as soon as a DE is running in one of em, whether on Wayland or X, all TTYs start flickering the same way. My setup: 5:4 @ 75 Hz monitor => DVI-D => HDMI => HDMI switch => HDMI => AMD Radeon R7 260X/360 (ASUS) Removing the HDMI switch does not resolve the issue. When I use VGA this issue doesn't happen. However, instead I get horizontal screen tearing right down the middle whenever the spat out frame rate by the graphics card gets too high. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:28 AM PST So I'm keeping my windows install (on a different hard drive) for things like gamepass or programs that may not work on Linux. My plan was to install pop os onto a different hard drives partition. I don't plan on dual booting in the sense of booting into a boot loader to choose between windows and Linux. I planned on simply changing the boot order to Linux and if I needed windows to manually chose windows when booting the pc. The idea was to avoid any possibility of dual boot issues, is there a particular way to install pop os onto a partition that I'm messing up? I tried to format the partition for root but it doesn't go beyond that. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |

How to execute a .bin file on a mounted archive? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:01 AM PST So basically I have this archive .tar.gz. I need it to be mounted while I'm executing a file from it. For some reason my system by default opens bin files with an archiver, so I usually execute them from terminal via ./ command. But I don't know how to access the mounted archive in terminal. Please help. [link] [comments] |

Networking question with dual nics Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:53 PM PST Hey all I am setting up a home security system and i am using zoneminder on Ubuntu. Currently I got everything up and ready with my IP cameras, but I do not want them to be a security risk. I was hoping to add another nic to my server so one is for regular network traffic and the other is for just the cameras. I do not want the cameras to be able to talk to anything other than this sever. Currently I have everything connected to my router though a switch. Any help would be great. [link] [comments] |

So repositories are distro and version specific? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:09 PM PST Total noob here, just jumped through the rabbit hole. Just to confirm the title question: so basically if I am on Ubuntu 16.04 and do sudo apt install kodi (for example) I will get a different (obv older) version than the same command on Ubuntu 20.04 for example? This is just to build my understanding on the concepts, nothing specific to solve. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Is this how I got hacked last month? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:13 AM PST Linux noob here. I had a file named testfile321.php in /public_html/testfolder321/ on my server last month... it was a test file I forgot to delete. The file testfile321.php had 0755 permissions, allowing anyone to execute. Here was the code in that file:
That's all there was to it. There was only one other person who knew about the existence of testfile321.php in my public web directory, a coder I was hiring. My server suddenly got infected by phishing malware and started sending out thousands of phishing emails, and people were replying to my server's email address saying I was sending them phishing emails. I've since restored my server to a clean image before that file ever existed, and changed all the passwords to everything, including the root password. Now my question is this: was it possible for him to execute commands and gain remote access through testfile321.php, seeing as how it had 0755 permissions? Did the existence of that file allow him to inject his own commands and gain root access? Can someone ELI5 what commands someone would've injected through that file to gain root access and/or install malware? Also checked the logs. Logs only went back the past few days, malware was installed probably a few months ago (after I fired him) and set to time-bomb-activate after last month. Guy also probably erased whatever history of him installing the malware. From now on I'm only giving my coders root on a cloned server with different passwords for everything, not the live server. I also ran "composer install" with root privileges (which the Laravel guide explicitly warns against), without the options --no-plugins --no-scripts; this time, after restoring the clean image, I ran that command without root and with the options --no-plugins --no-scripts. Anyway, is it possible that he could've regained root access using that 0755 testfile321.php? Running maldetect on my server showed testfile321.php was a malicious file, even if it was created by me. It was probably detected as malicious because of the elevated 0755 permissions. I don't know how someone could gain root with that file though, need a Linux expert to chime in here. Ubuntu 18.04.4 purple screen after login Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:46 AM PST Hi, I've just finished an Ubuntu 18.04.4 clean install on a ssd since my last hdd crushed. Everything ok, restart once, twice, and then I installed fcitx fit Chinese, uninstall ibus, reboot and purple screen. I can go up to the login screen no pb (too fast to catch the option of recovery mode), enter login and password ok, it opens and leaves me a cursor on a blank purple screen. I can move the cursor, but there is nothing. Ctrl+Alt+t doesn't seem to work. My laptop is a Dell latitude E4310. From Ctrl+Alt+F6 I tried every single possibility offered online, from grub editing, nomodeset, lightdm, xorgxrdp, edit the etc/xrdp/startwm.sh, reinstall ubuntu-desktop, nothing works. I have an Intel graphic card, but can't have more precision. I'm writing from my phone, and I'm in China, so vpn to come here. Please help me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:44 AM PST I've.. Been all over the place and I just.. irritated at this bullshit. my kernel is up to date. Linux 5.3.0-40-generic Tried to restart nm-applet with some stuff I found on Stack overflow that didn't work. nm-applet --disable nm-applet --enable but I get an error "Can't set a parent on a widget which has a parent. I don't even know where to begin troubleshooting. that little triangle-like thing that fills up as the network connection gets better is nowhere to be found. I can't install "network manager" from the software center.. Edit: I don't believe I uninstalled or messed with the default network program that manages Wi-Fi but from what I can understand doing research it looks like the programming network manager is what does it so that's why I was troubleshooting for that [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:43 AM PST So I'm looking for books to read until the new editions of The Linux Bible and How Linux Works come out, and I found an old recommendation of Running Linux by Matt Welsh and Matthias Kalle Dalheimer. However, it's from 2006, so I was wondering if people still think there's good information in it, or is it outdated by now? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:03 AM PST I understand the idea and I've looked at few examples online as well, but I'm curious: can you share cases illustrating why/when we have to pay close attention which of the two we use? [link] [comments] |
