Are gaming laptops meant to be played while the power cord is plugged in?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:56 AM PST

I got a new gaming laptop for a while and I noticed that my games run so much smoother when the power cord is plugged in. That got me thinking that gaming laptops are meant to be used while the power is plugged. But will this harm the battery?

Perfect laptop for CS student to use for 5 years for under $700

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:49 AM PST

I'm going to do my Bachelors in CS in August. Any suggestion on what to laptop to buy for my budget?

    Specs that I want

    1. 1080p screen
    2. 8 GB RAM (16GB would be better but not mandatory)
    3. Thin and Premium looking
    4. i5 10th Gen
    5. Any one of the below storage option
      1. 512 GB SSD
      2. 256 GB SSD + 512 GB HDD
      3. 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD
    6. Doesn't have loud fan noises
    7. Min 5 hr battery

I searched a lot but only found one laptop for my budget and specs but according to the reviews it makes a lot of noise and the keyboard isn't the best build.

    Thanks a lot.

    Upgrading storage on a laptop

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:52 AM PST

My little cousin has this laptop, it runs fine, but the thing has 20 fucking gigabites of storage in it. He can play roblox and nothing else, as his system files take up like 15 of those gigabytes. We need to upgrade to like a 250 gb or 1tb thing. Is this possible, and what would you recommend if it is?

    Can't change laptop display brightness

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:07 AM PST

So my laptop display brightness randomly went down, (I was playing some games) at first I thought my charger pulled out or something like that but that wasn't the case.

When I try to change the brightness via the F10 and F11 the windows brightness changing popup comes up but nothing happens to the brightness of the display itself.

If I set the brightness down to 0 it seems it is brighter than when the brightness is > than 0.

Sometimes I manage to change the brightness for some seconds but shortly after it instantly jumps back to 0.

I googled this problem and tried different solutions but nothing works for me... Any idea why?

    Edit: Video

Interesting issue: LTE for my laptop?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:50 PM PST

I have an Acer aspire that I picked up rather cheap. I want to populate it with a Sim card of its own so that I can be readily on the internet without needing a WiFi network, hotspotting my phone etc. I already have a Sim card with unlimited Verizon internet (grandfathered from years ago) and have been checking into maybe a Sim card adapter of some sort? Does anyone have experience doing something similar and can point me the right way? I seen dell has a LTE card but it would be too large for the spot inside the Acer. There's a few small adapters online as well.

    Best laptop review website?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:12 AM PST

Decent scores from a low energy 8350U cpu :) Offset voltage core and cache -0.0811 using ThrottleStop. I was also able to increase the turbo boost long power limit to 26W and the short turbo boost (44W) time limit to 40 seconds.

    Old laptop thoughts and questions

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:36 AM PST

So I have a gaming laptop that is basically unusable for portability. (Y740 to be exact) and i'm looking for laptops just intended for web browsing, video editing, and school use. (With maybe a light bit of gaming, say like browser games or old games)

One laptop I found that meets alot of my requirements is the Thinkpad T470. It isn't $600+ like a lot of laptops are and it has Thunderbolt 3 if needed. And it still has the replaceable battery.

I'm also struggling to find laptops that aren't super old but still carry a lot of power. The T470 for example was released in 2017 and you can usually find them (with a 1080p screen) for around 300-400 and a lot of them have 6-7th gen i5/i7's.

My question is, should I just go with the T470 since it meets most of my requirements, and have the thinkpad build quality? Or should I go with another brand or just buy a new laptop?

Yes or No Legion y540 for 1200

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:27 AM PST

    Quick question!

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:22 AM PST

I currently have a Acer Aspire E 15 and these are my specs.

Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3ghz with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz Intel HD graphics 520 up to 4157 MB Dynamic Video Memory 8 GB DDR3 L Memory + 1000 GB HDD

Now what I'm wondering is if the build I'm thinking of buying is better than this and if so by how much in terms of gaming?

The build i'm thinking of buying is as follows

    Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop - AN515-54-58YY Intel core i5-9300H processor Quad-core 2.40GHz NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 with 3GB dedicated memory 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM 1 TB HDD

Any info will be helpful, thanks.

Which of these two laptops should I buy?

Which of these two laptops should I buy?

Which of these two laptops should I buy?

I hope this is the correct subreddit for such a question.

I have found two ASUS S14 Vivobooks i am interested in. The first one I have found is on sale for 4.999 DKR (734 USD). It originally costs 6.511 DKR (956 USD).

The second one costs 5299 DKR ( 778 USD). However, to my peasant eye, it seems to me that both PC's have the same specifications. Therefore, i am asking why the price difference between these two is so wide.

I hope you can help :)

    thankyou beforehand
