How old can I go with used MacBooks?

How old can I go with used MacBooks?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:07 PM PST

I am a graduate student who does media management, i.e. web design, adobe illustrator, photoshop, premiere, audition, and FL studios/Ableton both academically, personally, and professionally on a daily basis for hours on end. I am currently using an older Lenovo E31(80kx), Processor, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U, .20GHz, 2201 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s), 8gb Ram,1 (I think its a primarily Scandinavian model) that has handled it like a champ, but is having a hard time running multiple projects at the same time.

I am in school for media studies and entertainment and all of my peers have Macs and rave about them. I have always wanted one, but could never afford one, for $3k I should either be able to drive it or live in it...

I am familiar with refurbished MacBooks, however, I do not use Apple OS and am unfamiliar with the workflow, especially with modern laptops.

If I were to get a refurbished Macbook, how old of a model could I buy before I see diminishing returns in its ability to handle my work? I don't want to drop a grand on a 2015 MacBook pro only to have to replace it within a year or two when Apple decides to dropkick anything that isn't brand new in terms of updating OS

Also, if anyone has other suggestions for a laptop that isn't apple and works really well for graphic design, video editing, and music I am all ears. I am not a tech savant in the world of hardware and the only thing my friends tell me is that Apple is the only way when it comes to this kind of work.

    Thanks in advance

Need a laptop for software development, less than $3k AUD

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:39 AM PST

    Reqs

    • Must be able to run some flavour of Unix with minimal hassle. Probably Ubuntu or NixOS
    • 16GB RAM
    • i7 processor (or AMD equivalent)
    • 13-15in screen
    • Portable (this is likely going to go to-and-from the office every day)
    • I don't care much about the graphics (no games are going to be played on this), but it should ideally be able to handle 2 external screens, plus its own.

Everything else (touch / UHD screens, large storage space, etc) are nice to haves, but not particularly essential.

Normally I'd just get a MacBook Pro, but the models of those with 16GB RAM are horrifyingly expensive at the moment.

That form thing that I got messaged about:

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
    • $3k Australian

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Yes :P . 16GB RAM + an i7 or AMD equiv is must. This will be plugged in most of the time, so battery life isn't that important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite. I'm going to have to carry this around quite a bit.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux. I'll probably keep a Windows partition around if it comes with it, but Linux will be the main OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope. Pure software dev. IDEs and compilers chew RAM like it's going out of fashion, though.

Additionally, this thing needs enough graphics grunt to run 2 external screens, plus its own.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope.

New (late 2019 Hp spectre x360 13) vs (late 2019 Dell xps 13 2 in 1). Which is better?

    New late 2019 Hp spectre x360 13 vs late 2019 Dell xps 13 2 in 1.

    • which is the better buy?
    • which would you personally want as a gift?
    • lastly, if you feel there is a better option, please recommend it. But it needs to be a 2 in 1 (I need one for the touch screen to take notes)

Should I buy a laptop or should I wait?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:46 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I need a laptop for university and work, it's very important for me that it will have PD support, high-end processor, good graphics and high SSD and RAM capacity.

I've looked on the Athena project laptop but there aren't many of those.

I don't need the laptop until August 2020 at least, So do you think I should wait for new laptops to arrive or you think that until Aug 2020 there will not be any innovations on the market?

    TIA!

What Macbook Pro should I buy and is it worth it? (for music production)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:23 AM PST

    Hey!

I'm currently thinking about switching from PC to a Macbook Pro.

I don't really play games any more and I only make music in ableton at the moment.

I got about 1600$ and would like to buy a (used!) Macbook Pro (with touchbar).

The 16GB/i7 15 inch 2018 model looks interesteing. I saw it on Ebay for about $1700.

Currently I use a Macbook Pro 2017 13" 128GB for school but I'd prefer a bigger one when I will use it for music production.

    What model do you recommend?

Would there be any disadvantages if I'd completely replace my Windows desktop PC? (besides dongles)

    I appreciate every recommendation!

no i'm not looking for a windows 10 laptop, i'd love to start working in macos

Buying a Video editing Laptop, advice needed!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:31 AM PST

Hello everyone, new here! As the title says i need some help with deciding what laptop i should get for work. I do video editing and i usually render around 15-20 videos a day, all 1080p in Sony Vegas. (Might switch to premier later). Budget is about 1K euros. Country is N. Macedonia.

The two laptops I'm looking at right now are as follows:

    1. The budget laptop: ACER Nitro AN515
    • i5- 9300H
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4G
    • 8GB Ram DDR4
    • 512 GB SSD
    1. The expensive one: ASUS FX505 TUF Gaming
    • AMD Ryzen 7 3750H
    • Nvidia GeFroce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6
    • 8GB Ram DDR4
    • 512Gb SSD

The price difference between these two is 160 euros (around $200). What i am looking for is longevity and performance and heat management. Don't really care about other stuff. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Help a future mechanical engineering student choose a reliable laptop

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:06 AM PST

Total budget and country of the purchase: About $1500 can go a bit up if needed. Country-USA, one thing to note is that I am going to be an international student in the US, so I would buy once I come to the US or have my uncle order it as he lives there. I could also use Student discounts if any but I do not have much information about that.
Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Good battery and best specifications for the money
How important is weight and thinness to you?
    Prefer medium
Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
    Windows
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    Anything larger than 13 inches
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am going to be a mechanical engineering student so I would run programs like CAD, Solidworks, and MATLAB. I am not sure if this is feasible though.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I play Minecraft from time to time but nothing crazy just realms or vanilla survival.
Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    Good Keyboard, reliable build quality
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am looking for a laptop that will last me 4 years of undergrad. I will also be watching Netflix and youtube on it but I do not need a 4k screen. I do not need a gaming computer. I am not that into laptops so all the terms confuse me a little so I get confused when looking on Amazon, but I do know what a graphics card or a SSD is. I just need a reliable laptop which will run smoothly.
I have looked at the Dell XPS but all the models confuse me.
    Thanks

Looking for cheap, portable laptop/chromebook? Considering Jumper and Lenovo

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:01 AM PST

I'm hoping to buy a cheap, ultra-portable laptop/chromebook, but I'm getting a bit stumped over reviews and am looking if anyone has a recommendation. Here are the specs I'm looking for and the laptops I'm considering.

I won't be using this for any heavy-lifting; it's mainly for office work, media, web browsing, file viewing, and the such. I need something that won't break down or present a lot of issues within a year, so although Jumper seems to have some attractive options, I'm leaning towards the lenovo due to the reliability and reviews.

    - My budget is abpout $350.

    - Bare minimum 32GB SSD (for Chrome OS), Preferred 64GB, Bigger is better here

    - Chrome OS looks acceptable for my needs but Windows is my preference due to the options that come with it

    - 1920x1080 Display Preferred, slightly smaller is acceptable assuming the product is good

    - Matte Display for anti-glare is preferred but not absolutely necessary

    - A USB port, at least 2 if possible

    - Touchscreen and 2-in-1 tablet usage is highly preferred but again, if the product is good not absolutely necessary

    - Bluetooth and Wireless capabilities are necessary

    - Currently considering a 11.6 inch display, no bigger than 13

I'm caught between these three options at the moment, but can't seem to make a decision.

    - Jumper EZbook X3 Pro

    - Jumper EZpad 6 Pro

    - 2019 Lenovo HD IPS Touchscreen Chromebook

Any help woud be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Possibly a Surface Book 2 Alternative

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:03 PM PST

    Hello all,

I currently have a Surface Pro 4 and I really like the idea of it, it is just slowing down and losing alot of battery life. I am in college for graphic design so I can always use a little more power as well. I have been looking into the surface book 2 and really like the look of it, just not positive about the price on it.

Any alternatives or should I just go for a surface book 2?

Total budget and country of purchase: $1000~ USD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I honestly like all of these preferably.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter weight is better, don't want a gaming laptop.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" is best, will do slightly smaller or larger though.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional 3D editing for 3D printing, photo editing, and very light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends would be the only thing really. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely need a pen.

Which of these gaming laptops is the best one to buy in your opinion?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:20 PM PST

Before I begin: All of these laptops are on Amazon (US) and I'm checking the Amazon Prime prices.

    1. Omen by HP 2019. Price : $1799 This laptop has an rtx 2080 (not a max-q, the full laptop one). For this price this is incredible, but I'm a little hesitant because I'm wondering if its a "too good to be true" kinda deal. I don't know what corners they could be cutting to achieve such a low price compared to the competition. So any info would be nice.

    2. ROG Zephyrus M Price: $1748. This has an RTX 2070 max-q which is the lowest I want to go for a laptop GPU. Right off the bat its not as good of a performance to price ratio as the Omen, but if its of good build quality, I will consider it.

    3. CUK Asus ROG Strix III Price $1799 . This one seems like a pretty good deal. It features a Full laptop 2070 which is a nice step up from the Zephyrus but of course not as good as the Omen. It also features 32GB of ram where as the others only had 16GB ram. Unfortunately some of the reviews have me worried. Theres one mentioning hard drive failures and another mentioning a GPU failure.

    4. Sager NP8957 Price: $1699 This one is the cheapest of the bunch but it isn't too far behind in terms of performance. It features a max-q 2070 and 32gb of ram. In addition I've heard good things about Sager and clevo laptops (They are long lasting laptops) so the build quality should be good.

Which of these seems like the best deal ?

If you have any other suggestions I would only have two requirements: RTX 2070 minimum and $1899 maximum price.

Which of these two laptops is the best one to buy? Should I be looking elsewhere?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:57 PM PST

Let me start off by saying I'm new here, feel free to tell me I did something wrong if I missed something or I'm just being dumb.

I'm a computer science student who needs a laptop with ample screen real estate to reference sources for code or reference books while writing essays and other school work. I currently have a 13 inch Hp Envy with an 8th Gen i5, 8gb ram, 256gb of storage and non-dedicated gpu. As much as I like the look and feel of the laptop, having spent about 3/4 of a year with it it's way to small for the work I need to do at school and also struggles when compiling code even when on the best performance battery settings.

I'm at a cross roads between the Razer Blade 15 (2018) and a Surface Book 2 (13 or 15 inch variants). My main concerns are performance, battery life, aesthetics. I want a laptop that can handle very light gaming, Overwatch, Minecraft, and Dolphin Wii emulation. I'm not looking to run anything on amazing settings. I have a desktop where I play most of my games but it's not uncommon for me to go to a friends house and play a few rounds of OW, some MC on a server with them or even setup an impromptu Project M Dolphin setup at school with some friends. Besides light gaming, I also do a good amount of Photoshop work, as well as my coding work for classes and other homework. As for my budget I'm looking to spend about $1000-1600 usd. One last request is that I want whatever I get to be reliable. Preferably I would like this laptop to last me through the rest of collage (about 2 and a half years) plus about 2 or 3 more years. I bring this up because I've seen several posts about Razers failing and not being too reliable.

I was looking to buy the Razer Blade Refurbished from Razer's "Outlet" page where they have some pretty good deals for Razer Blades. The specs that I was looking at were a GTX 1060, i7-8750H, 15 inch screen 144hz (I dont really care about 60 vs 144 but it's nice to have) , and a 512gb ssd. This would come to US $1,549.99.

For the Surface Book 2 I was looking at either the 13 or 15 inch variants. I've seen both in person and the aspect ratio makes the 13 inch seems way bigger than my current 13 inch laptop so I figure it should work just fine for me. Anyways for the specific model I was looking to buy it's specs were GTX 1060, i7-8650U, 15 inch screen 6hz (I dont really care about 60 vs 144), and a 256gb ssd. This would come to US $1,564.99.

I'm open to more than just these two laptops but these are the two that I've kind of focused in on in the past little bit of my search for a new computer. My main draws to these laptops (besides what I mentioned in the beginning) are aesthetics and thinness/ weight. Whatever computer I get, I don't want a laptop that will stand out as a gaming laptop when I move onto more professional jobs. As for the weight/ how thin it is. I pretty much bring my laptop everywhere I go so I want something portable that I can throw in my backpack and not worry about having to cram things in because of how thick it is. If you have any suggestions between the two laptops I listed or even if you know of a different laptop that would be better for what I'm doing please send it my way

Finally, thank you for reading, helping me pick out a laptop, and putting up with my horrible typing. If you need me to elaborate on anything I said feel free to ask.

Should I wait for Asus Zephyrus G15 or buy MSI Prestige 15 at the moment

    • Total budget and country of purchase: From $1500 to $2000. Vietnam

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Both if possible but if I have to choose, I choose best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It's important, I have to bring it with me almost every day

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux, I know how to install dual boot in my old Dell laptop

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 is the one of choice

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Coding IDEs like Vscode, IntelliJ IDEA, multiple docker containers running at the same time, ...

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? My priority are Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Total War Three kingdoms, Call of Duty series, some RTS games...

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard, reliable build quality are my top requirements

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi all, right now I want to buy a new laptop which can be my companion in next few years. My main job is programming and I play games at free times. I intend to install dual boot linux and windows, I don't really need to play games at highest settings. The laptop's hardware can be upgraded, it should have a stylish look and not too heavy so I can bring it to anywhere I want. After considering many laptops, I decide 2 ones:

      1. MSI Prestige 15: This one is absolutely meets all my requirements. I really like it but ...
      2. ... Asus Zephyrus G15: At CES 2020, it showed up and I'm impress a lot. The main reason is I haven't use AMD CPU before so I want to try it out this time. But I wonder is it worth the wait?

Looking for a laptop for remote desktop use

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 09:28 PM PST

    Hi All,

I'm looking for a decent budget laptop to 90% use for TeamViewer access to my home PC to work on all my uni work which is mostly virtualisation and writing reports. I know I've seen posts like this before but I also want to be able to plug in and utilise my secondary 15" FHD screen ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC, so I can utilise my dual monitor setup at home, which may require slightly more graphics power.

Total budget and country of purchase:
    <=$750AUD (Australia) (~$500USD) I am flexible on price by about $100AUD ($65USD).

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
I'd prefer battery life over specs or a 2 in 1 but I am happy to be plugged in. I'm not sure how hungry TeamViewer and pushing a second screen would be though.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is probably the most important thing and I guess thinness would be inevitable. I'd prefer under 2kg (~4.4lbs) but I could deal with 2kg as my current ThinkPad is over 2.5kg and is quite thick..

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
N/A as it's only for TeamViewer.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6" to match my external display.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Other than TeamViewer I'd really only want it for light browsing and video streaming in my downtime.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't think I'd really be gaming on the laptop but if I did I'd be happy with low-end/retro games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like a good back-lit keyboard and a good touchpad, as I have been spoiled my my old ThinkPad, and it's only the weight making me look for a new one. I'd also like a IPS screen as my ZenScreen has quite a nice glass screen, which my ThinkPad's TN panel doesn't compare to.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd prefer a USB C port in order to plug in my screen but thankfully, as long as I have a USB 3.0 port on my laptop, my screen will work with USB A. I'd also like the ability to potentially replace parts in future in case they die or I pass it on to a family member but I know that would probably go against the thin and light ethos, so it's not vital.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Max $1500(USA). Lower is nice(the cheaper the better)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life(5+ hours at least)

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Pretty important. A few pounds is fine, but the lighter the better

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** No requirement, but have been considering Mac.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13 - 15in preferred

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Programming, data analytics, video editing, photo editing, and basic work use. These will be my main use.

    Thanks in advance!

LOWEST possible cost/budget laptop to use Autodesk Fusion 360 ?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:05 PM PST

    I found https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-nitro-5-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-256gb-solid-state-drive-black/6344383.p?skuId=6344383

and I am trying to tell someone I am helping that it may be difficult to find anything cheaper. Here I am asking. Help?

Some minimum according to the company:

64-bit processor (32-bit not supported), 4 cores, 1.7 GHz Intel Core i3, AMD Ryzen 3 or greater

Memory 4 GB of RAM (integrated graphics recommend 6 GB or more)

Disk Space 3 GB of storage

    Display Resolution 1366 x 768 (1920 x 1080 or greater at 100% scale strongly recommended)

    Graphics Card

Supported for DX 11 or greaterDedicated GPU with 1 GB or more of VRAMIntegrated graphics with 6 GB or more of RAM

I had a slightly pricier version, but they asked me to go cheaper. I'm not sure anything cheaper could support it at all. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Also saw this but it's more. Plus no SSD https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-17-3-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-16gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-vega-10-1tb-hdd-jet-black-mesh-knit-pattern-with-texture-finish/6393921.p?skuId=6393921&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=323&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAy9jyBRA6EiwAeclQhP7EQbyo-pHGmiGsNA_ugL86CYHpIEpW4-J2DqLXEiVum8KsUbqb3BoCJ2cQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
